It seems appropriate somehow for your videos as they always focus, no pun intended, on the simplicity and pleasure of nature! Loved both the fungi and heather. • @robert_skonblad
      @robert_skonblad 4 роки тому

      @@SimonBoothPhotography Thanks for asking Simon! I didn't find any -- I looked it up, and learned that there really isn't that much heather in my parts of Sweden.
      There are some heathlands down in the southwest, but even there it's rare, since most of it was replaced with planted forest in the early parts of the 20th century.
      Around where I live in Stockholm there's more in the archipelago, but that requires going by boat, which complicates things. Even there it's just random shrubs.
      You did inspire me to look closer on the ground though! Found some mosses with water drops, and some of it worked as an image.

    Love the image of the heather Simon. I have used a portable light source in a similar way when lighting fungi...it works well but your diffuser approach looks great. Searching patiently, and lying on the ground all day, smelling and feeling the forest, is a great pleasure. And you don't need a big macro lens, I use old olympus om lenses, although a 60mm Nikon is justly famous. In Spain there are geniuses of fungy, I advise you to take a look at the work and publications of Alex Alonso.You can be accompanied by a camera with a 50 mm macro and a small gorillapod or carry as some do several flashes, color filters for flashes or even painted backgrounds, all the desire you have to carry weight or if you have Sherpas, hi, hi, hi

    Hi Simon, lovely vlog again... I do have a question though... Why is there not enough depth of field at f11 at short focal lengths? (so that you need to focus stack) I thought f11 and smaller apertures gave front to back sharpness... Please enlighten me... Thanks

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve
      I shoot medium format so f11 for me is like f8 on a full frame camera. I was at 1:1 on this image, so very close in, and depth of field decreases as magnification increases. I could have stopped the lens down to f22 or f32 like I used to in the days of transparency film, but defraction always meant loss of quality. Now that we can focus stack at the lenses optimum aperture, it makes complete sense to do it.

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  3 роки тому

      I think your camera is absolutely suitable John as long as you have a good range of lenses. I generally have the full frame equivalent of 21mm through to 150mm at present. When I used to shoot Canon I had all the way up to 500mm but the kind of subjects I shoot these days doesn't require such focal lengths. I do miss my 100-400mm though. One lens I wouldn't be without though is my macro. Not because everything is shot at 1:1 but other things in that range also require a macro lens.

      @@davetucker2000 Please bear with me at the moment then. I have a backlog and can't find the time to edit them. There should be plenty in the back catalogue to keep you busy for now 👍

    the fungus was great, the heather could have done with subject flower being in focus front to back and maybe less of the out of focus ones in the foreground/to the front left right, they seem to stifle the subject, making it look like they suffocating the image, the out of focus ones in the background work well.

    The heather spike image was very nice. Did you have to add any blur in Photoshop or was all the bokeh achievable with the F4 aperture and close focus?

      Philip Culbertson Hi Philip, it was all in camera. The 120mm Pentax macro is well known for its good bokeh.

    You are one of a group of British photographers I have been following for some time now, but this is the first time I have heard any of you mention snakes of any kind. Living the Southeastern United States, I'm always cognizant as I enter snake habitat with multiple species of pit vipers one can encounter. I'm going to have to look up your adder, I wasn't aware there was anything poisonous in your region.

      They’re not known specifically as something people regularly die from, but it is possible! It depends on your vulnerability! Anti venom is available should you get bitten.
