I'm Canadian and I've actually played pickle ball. We did a unit in high school. It's awful, mostly because the rackets are bulky, heavy, and uncomfortable to hold. Worst unit ever. Ofc Donald would make a movie about it.
The thing is, the "find people who are skilled athletes, and train them how to act, rather than trying to teach actors to be good at sports" can actually work. "Miracle", a movie about the 1980 US men's hockey team, used a similar strategy for actors, and received generally positive reviews (81% on Rotten Tomatoes). In theory, this can be a good way to handle sports in films. And unlike some areas, where low budgets can explain it, you don't need a big budget to go "don't sound like a robot". It can work. He just... doesn't know how to teach acting
