But having a child actor would open it up for a message about family, and maybe it ends with him being adopted by the family. There is still a lot of work that would need to be done to rewrite it to make it even remotely presentable.
This is such a weird and kinda dark take on this IP as well?? Like so we’re saying that Harold was actually a boy who was just trapped in an imaginary world where he would eventually grow old and die? Why not just let it be that it was in his imagination and now he’s facing adult challenges?
Or it could even be a story about Harold growing up and starting a family of his own. Maybe his own children are going through some kind of hardship and he reconnects with the magic of imagination to help bring more joy to their lives? That would have been the perfect concept for a heartwarming family movie.
It would have been so nice to make it more meta, like the boy that the story was based on is a different kid, he grows up, grows old and dies only to pass on the "purple crayon power" to his descendants, so a lot of them grow up to be excellent artists. One of the perfect examples of companies non-originality is the entire issue of the killing off of cartoons. Which means you will need to purchase each episode of the show or illegally obtain the episodes.
IMO, when the companies stop caring about an IP, when they literally can’t be bothered to keep them available to the public, piracy is completely fine and morally just. Thank you! That's all I could think this whole video. When are ppl going to learn that Botox doesn't make you look younger? It makes you look like you were born in the Uncanny Valley, and it's just disturbing.
Maybe it's because this movie and IF really piss me off but I just realized how crazy similar Snap from Chalkzone and Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends are.
... I have never heard of this movie or story before and even then just the crayon part at the start I was genieunly lovely. I, a full adult, thought that was cute and spledndid. I would have honestly watch a cute little kids movie following that little kid, his crayon and his imagination. So how..... How do u crush such a good premise like that so completely..... Also independently the power of "creation" is just a super fun concept and if they wanted to make a cooler, more adult film, could have just leaned into creating an original character with creation powers. Even if they wanted to be lazy, knowing the depths of the comic book/super hero universe I'm positive a creations powers character already exists that they could have made a fun movie about. Wouldn't even have to be like a "superhero" movie if they didn't want. Just someone with powers trying to live normally would be cool
The original book was one of my favorites, its simple but really great imo. Excellent little story to read to the little ones. Whatever THIS is made me upset lol. The animated section was really nice tho
If I remember correctly, there WERE animated Harold and the Purple Crayon shorts! I vaguely remember having a DVD collection of them I’d watch as a kid; they were silly and charming, and the original character and concept have so much potential that a fully animated film could have worked… but no, it has to be yet another live-action movie about an obnoxious manchild who never grew up. Something about these “adaptations” feels so goddamn cynical to me, it just completely removes the innocent charm the originals had.
So they just remade enchanted but with an actual kids book? 4:14 this is literally the plot of enchanted; ‘cartoon opening scene, magical portal teleportation into the real world, real world shenanigans etc.’ is literally the exact same plot scene for scene….
They should have gone more Where the Wild Things Are and had an adventure that was completlely child led. That or gone rated R for adults lol, that could have sucked me in

i haven’t even heard of the book until my mom randomly bought tickets for me and my brother to watch it with her. as soon as the live action bit started, i knew i would hate it. it was like watching the Percy Jackson movies all over again.
Adult animated Harold has a kind of Man in the Yellow hat Chic going for him and it kind of reminds me of that Green eggs and ham cartoon. I wish they’d kept it animated.
Genuine question, but did kids even like this movie? If they took like a Night in the Museum approach, in that the whole film had some mystical imagination elements to it, it might've been fun, but the casting alone is questionable at best. This should've either been animated or they should've just cast actual kids for this. Honestly.
@parker_plumtree seems like he was the highlight of the movie though, and hey, get the bag then go fund your passion projects that might not make money ykno?
15:08 might genuinely one of the worst scenes i’ve seen in a big budget movie recently. the green screening looks awful, and zooey is just mumbling through her lines and they kept it. it’s absolutely outrageous how bad this movie is
So few people watched this movie I haven't even seen other UA-camrs reviewing it lol. But seriously I LOVED this book as a child. It's arguably one of the best children's books of all time and was actually already adapted into a short and an animation decades ago. The book itself is so complete as a story I don't know who could read it and think "yeah I want more of this with Zachary Levi"
i hate the current media obsession with turning everything into live action. give me some stylized animated kids movies dude, as a kid i HATED live action stuff, always thought it was so boring. why are we making kids watch boring adults play annoying characters- there's so many movies that already do that.
if I remember correctly this was originally supposed to be a fully animated movie, very similar to the intro, just him making stuff. But it went into development hel creating this.

2:06 bro just ruined the face of my favourite show back in primary school in less than 10 seconds 😅 this why I don't follow or care about actors, they're all terrible people
If we're being real tho its not really that people "want" these movies. Its more that making more creative stuff would mean that people would spend their money in a way that is more diversified, which studio can't have because they all want to make the MOST money ALL the time. So instead they overflow the market with nostalgia bait and give the ultimatum to the average joe between familiarity (sequels, prequels, cinematic universe, ect) and something more risky in which they might end up regretting putting their money into.
Not gonna lie, the effects in this movie are CRAZY good. Props to the artists, I hope they got paid well, because this movie doesn't deserve their amazing work, but they deserve their money.
Also... Why would someone who lived their whole life in a 2D world know the concept of the third dimension to the point he can conceptually understand the concept of the z axis before being transported there? We can't even fathom the concept of a fourth dimension, why is this dude suddenly different?
12:48 not sure if anyone else noticed this, but I’m pretty sure the ice cream is CGI? I noticed it when I first watched the movie (ik 💀) and it just. Doesn’t look like the actors are actually holding it? Like at all. Very weird production choice…
I only noticed when you pointed it out but uh yeah that looks weird as heck?? I feel like I know what they were going for but it doesn't work. It just looks wrong. Wrong enough that I'm pretty sure even kids would notice and not get it. I know fake ice cream can be kind of pricey but like ...they could have used whipped cream dyed purple at this point and it would have looked better. Like if they wanted it to have that "animated" feeling they shouldn't have gone for a realistic style. It would have been way more appealing to make it a cartoonist style to include the original art style in the movie outside of the intro. What was the point of the nod and wink at the beginning if they refuse to carry it over into the rest of the movie. His drawing ability could still get better but leaving the cute lineart style that absolutely no one says anything about would have been much cooler.
thank you so much for pointing out that the writers are not at fault for unoriginality in film/tv. they WANT to write new, original works that make people think and feel in ways they hadn't before. a major part of the WGA and TAG unions' efforts have been trying to steer away from this rampant homogeny - especially as studios and the AMPTP push towards smaller writers tables, fewer original pitches, more canceled projects (look into david zazlav/WBD for more on that), and worst of all - AI for every single possible task. it's almost never the fault of the writers.
My own mother used to read me the his book before bed as a child...watching this movie was like the nightmares i'd get when she didn't read me to sleep.

I’d rather people pirate than something becoming lost media because a multi BILLION dollar industry thinks they can decide what’s worthy of their streaming bandwidth.
Ohh Zooey, baby girl nooo 🫣 Jesus, what did they do to her??
bad shit. i didn't recognize her at first!
@@goldensloth7 I had to google the cast to make sure it was her.😂😅 I think she got work done because she looks beyond different?
Thank you! That's all I could think this whole video. When are ppl going to learn that Botox doesn't make you look younger? It makes you look like you were born in the Uncanny Valley, and it's just disturbing.
anyone remember that show Chalkzone? I feel like the “drawing things to life” genre was such a big part of my childhood that I forgot until now 😅
Maybe it's because this movie and IF really piss me off but I just realized how crazy similar Snap from Chalkzone and Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends are.
Lol I was going to comment "I didn't know they did a chalkzone 2."
RuDy'S GoT the ChAlK !
Chalkzone is forever the best version of this
@@Collato AH I forgot about Foster’s, how could I forget?!?
Now I’m even more pissed off at this movie and If, you’re right
This is that unfortunate genre of “kids” movie where the main plot revolves around stuff adults care about, and the kids stuff is just set-dressing
YES. THANK YOU. The first half with Harold growing with the crayon was perfect and I woulda watched it.
HBO has a cartoon for Harold and The Purple Crayon. I remember it being really cute and charming.
Something about these “adaptations” feels so goddamn cynical to me, it just completely removes the innocent charm the originals had.
lost media?
@@sadclovvn not lost! the harold cartoons from 2002 are avail on prime and apple tv and the shorts from the 50s are on youtube :P

She was actually adorable ngl. I hate that such cute character design was wasted on this movie
It’s cringe
It was today that I suddenly realized how Chalk Zone was and remains to be the most natural progression of a sequel to Harold & the Purple Crayon
So they just remade enchanted but with an actual kids book? 4:14 this is literally the plot of enchanted; ‘cartoon opening scene, magical portal teleportation into the real world, real world shenanigans etc.’ is literally the exact same plot scene for scene….
bro this is some top tier (negative) hollywood slop right here! everyone come get your hollywood slop from the trough!
They should have gone more Where the Wild Things Are and had an adventure that was completlely child led. That or gone rated R for adults lol, that could have sucked me in
This!!!
I legit thought Zachary Levi was Jimmy Fallon until like 2 days ago ( I also thought Ben Stiller was Nicolas Cage so I think I might just be really bad with remembering faces idk)
This video just made me realise i have been confusing Zachary levi and Zachary quinto for my whole life
I fr thought spock was the voice of flynn in tangled
ME TOO
Harold and the Purple Crayon was so magic to me as a kid, I loved the metanarrative of the kid drawing everything in the book, and it really inspired me and tickled my imagination. So, I'm excited to surely see that represented in the film. Aaand begin video.
This week on: "Not everything needs to be live-action"

If you're having dreams about holding your breath and feeling like you're suffocating, both me and my friend had sleep apnea, and it DOES THIS TO US BOTH and I am very thin so it can happen to anyone! (I say this because people think only bigger individuals get sleep apnea at least from my experience, everyone I know had said this to me when I told them I have it.) I would get it confirmed or denied.
Yes! Commenting to boost this up
Definitely a joke
Boosting this too! My dad has it and has his whole life despite not being overweight for the first chunk of his life. Just has a thick neck.
Overweight/obese people are more likely to have it, I don't know anyone saying that "only" obese people can have it
Can it be dreams of just suffocating which in turn make it so you can’t breathe or do you need to dream it? It’s probably a stupid question, I’m sorry
I got Zachary Levi confused with Jon Hamm. That casting would've been so funny I think it would've saved it.
if this was completely animated and didn't involve zachary levi it might've been a great film for kids about imagination and creation
I agree, and now want more 2D animated films.
I hope we get more, their amazing.
i haven’t even heard of the book until my mom randomly bought tickets for me and my brother to watch it with her. as soon as the live action bit started, i knew i would hate it. it was like watching the Percy Jackson movies all over again.
Hate the implication at the end that the reason the narrator went silent was because he straight up died in the real world 💀
Andy reminds me of those like "Connecting The Rock to a cockroach in England" Videos where they relate the most random thigs together and makes sense
a 40 year old alleged anti vax man was a strange choice to play a child to say the least
Honestly.
Lancelot Vs. The Triceratops skeleton still goes hard to this day.
13:25 what about us Flight of the Conchords fans? If you're not familiar, you should watch that show. It's some good times.
Eagle v Shark
I'm disappointed a kiwi was involved in this 😂
@parker_plumtree seems like he was the highlight of the movie though, and hey, get the bag then go fund your passion projects that might not make money ykno?
15:08 might genuinely one of the worst scenes i’ve seen in a big budget movie recently. the green screening looks awful, and zooey is just mumbling through her lines and they kept it. it’s absolutely outrageous how bad this movie is
Why does this remind me of the live action Cifford the Big Red Dog movie from 2021
I completely forgot about that
how did i not hear about that😭
So few people watched this movie I haven't even seen other UA-camrs reviewing it lol. But seriously I LOVED this book as a child. It's arguably one of the best children's books of all time and was actually already adapted into a short and an animation decades ago. The book itself is so complete as a story I don't know who could read it and think "yeah I want more of this with Zachary Levi"
Here everyone was calling this film the bad version of Barbie when it was really just Elf without Christmas or joy.

i hate the current media obsession with turning everything into live action. give me some stylized animated kids movies dude, as a kid i HATED live action stuff, always thought it was so boring. why are we making kids watch boring adults play annoying characters- there's so many movies that already do that.
When I was little I called everything that wasn’t Star Trek or a cartoon “commercials” 😂
From voicing Tangled, playing the titular role of Shazam to this is such a whiplash of a career.
the X-Rays and Krushing Blows from Mortal Kombat used for gags? I love it
So does this mean he was cast against type in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel when he got to play an adult?
being a Jemaine Clement filmography completionist is a hard job

if I remember correctly this was originally supposed to be a fully animated movie, very similar to the intro, just him making stuff. But it went into development hel creating this.
"Made him is own world to put him out of his misery" LMFAO LOL EVEN

“Captain Marvel endorses Luthor for President”
If you know, you know.
15:14 Omg, this movie even has Santa Claus in it. This movie is definitely Elf!
Why didn’t they just make an animated movie instead??? The line work is simple and the background can be whatever they want smh
8:51 unfortunately dad didn’t take into account, secret serial killers, burglars, terrorists idk
Elf + Enchanted + studio greed = whatever tf this is
I loved Zachary Levi in Chuck.
Same! Chuck is one of my favorite shows, what the actors do today could never change my opinion on the show.
The end is basically the big battle at the end of Sharkboy and Lavagirl
I love Chuck but Zachary Levi has not been it 😢
I think the angle they're going for is "it's ok to still be a kid even if you're grown up!" But it comes off as really weird and creepy.
Also... Why would someone who lived their whole life in a 2D world know the concept of the third dimension to the point he can conceptually understand the concept of the z axis before being transported there? We can't even fathom the concept of a fourth dimension, why is this dude suddenly different?
@@kitsunemusicisfirethat’s nitpicking af ngl, you really expect a kids movie to explained that?

12:48 not sure if anyone else noticed this, but I’m pretty sure the ice cream is CGI? I noticed it when I first watched the movie (ik 💀) and it just. Doesn’t look like the actors are actually holding it? Like at all. Very weird production choice…
I’m assuming it’s something drawn with the purple crayon, so they wanted to make it the same CGI as the crayon effects
@@EngineMashupsthey…..they couldn’t have just found some purple ice cream? I..it can’t be too hard to do, right?
The timing of this video is insane
Harold should have drawn a better movie.

"More creatures! And goblins. Goblins would've been cool."
That could go so many ways, and half of them are aggressively horny.
17:15 is that the theme song from "the smoking room"? That weird obscure British comedy show set entirely in a smoking room at an office?
My own mother used to read me the his book before bed as a child...watching this movie was like the nightmares i'd get when she didn't read me to sleep.
Now that I'm thinking about it, the storyline is also similar to the Barbie movie
