Stephen Taylor Dude, I gravitate towards your teaching/insight style. My whole life, I've had these sounds in my head, always tapping on the desk at school, getting detention etc lol. The disconnect has always been...my limbs can't produce the sounds.
I took lessons at 8 yrs old for about 3 months, nothing since...fell off, for years. I retrieved my white 1992 Tama Rockstar DX, 25 yr old set from my parents house when the house was sold...I dusted it off.
I need to face the 'sound in my head'...I'm at it again finally! Any words would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance sir!

Thank you. Some days i feel i can play anything while other days i can barely stay on time with a 4-4 beat. I started drumming only a couple months ago so i know i have an extremely long way to go. But vids like this make the jorney that much easier.

Stephen Taylor I just love you man. Thanks a lot for your videos. I started learning drums at the age of 32. Now it's been 4 years almost. I am not even close to where I was imagining about my playing and everytime I say oh no I can't make it you are coming with another motivational video. I appreciate it. Much love and peace from Turkey :)

For me, a really competitive person (I am working on changing this about myself), it's always been the "Oh there's an 8 year old kid playing way better than what I might ever be able to, why should I even bother?" Seeing all these kis reaching places at an age way younger can be a little desmotivating, specially for highly competitive people like me, but I am working on it, and of course I am working on becoming a better drummer every single day. Thanks a lot for the words Stephen, I appreciate them and they exactly what I needed to hear. Cheers.

Even if your not gigging realize how great drumming is for your brain and emotions. I look at it like a meditation.
Many of my friends have quit and I just keep doing it day after day. People ask me "how did you get that good"?
My answer, "I just never quit". I just want to be really good at drumming, even if I am never known. Just for the pure love
of it. I have also found rhythm to be very healing as well as grounding.
When I was younger it was for groupies, attention ,ego and a party lifestyle .Now it is for the pure of love of drumming.
Compliments are nice but when I leave the stage I don't need to be told how great or wonderful I am.
All the teachers , videos, sheet music or help we need is all around us to use. Much of it is free.
I still have to be willing to spend countless hours learning a complex rhythm until I own it.
The benefit to all this hard work is, you are developing soul in your musical expression. Your character is developing and
that comes through you as you because you paid the price of not giving up.
When I see or hear an amazing musician I am impressed that they had the true grit to continue to pay the price.
What you put into drumming comes back. Ask yourself ,"why am I doing this?
As we have breakthroughs in drumming our character is molded, which is a blessing in so many ways that might not seem
    connected to music.
Nothing will stop me. If I cannot drum because it might be a disturbance to others I will play a pad.If a pad is to loud then I will
air drum. If that is not possible then I will practice in my mind (silently) Clapping, stepping working with rhythm even if I have no drums. The Universe gets the message that "I will do my personal best"
No one ever said it would be easy but I am playing things I could never conceive of playing even a year ago.
Baby steps. I love the beginner mindset. The greats all seem to have it.
So much to say and yet my drums are calling me.

Yes! I'm 74 years old and I've been playing since 1965. I started in rock, moved over to jazz and my motive for drumming has evolved many times over the years. Even though I don't play outside the house nearly enough anymore, I still play in my Man Cave because this is my therapy. My best playing comes sometimes when I sit behind the kit, exhale and just relax without thinking. I hear stuff come from my drums and cymbals that I didn't even know were in there. It's like someone else took over. I'm not talking about any specific thing like a solo or pattern; it's more like a rhythm that my soul is riding.
Don't overthink it. Just enjoy it. If it ain't fun, then you're doing it wrong.
I still try to learn something new every single day. I wish I'd had UA-cam back in the day. So much to learn, so little time.

Thank you. I’m a beginner 59 yr old woman finally have the opportunity to get lessons and bought a drum kit. Was loving it until this week on 32nd notes. I think I get it, then, no. Was thinking what I was always told “ not smart enough to read music”. Your words really encouraged me on a rough day of practicing.

I stopped playing when I was 8 years old. I gave up after my first lesson. Now I'm 19 and have been playing for four years. I wish I didn't stop playing. I always wonder how better I would have been if I kept playing from 8 years old to present. That doesn't stop me from wanting to keep improving and playing though :D

I'm almost 66 years old. No I never hit the big time, only small successes. Knew I could play when I was 12, no family support. I'm retired living in a foreign country, I practice 3 to 6 hours a day on a pad and the floor( no room in the house to set up)play once a week at an ex pat jam session, I get food for pay. You know what? So what! I love playing, always did, nothing can stop that!

I actually came back to this video for the emotional support. Last year, I switched to open handed playing to accommodate for arthritis in both shoulders, and, playing jazz, my left hand struggles to even get near the spang-a-lang my my right used to deliver in 280+ bpms. Once again: thank you Stephen!
It's criminal that this video doesn't have more likes.

The "dislikers" of this video must have not taken your advice and realized they DID waste their time by quitting. Thanks for the words, brother. As a 40 yr old (married 15 yrs and dad of two), I am on a practice pad in the basement after I got the kids to bed. I may never "make it" and be able to quit my day job, but having confidence on a gig makes all the difference in the world, and certainly makes it all worthwhile. Very much appreciate your vids!

I had just started thinking, maybe this just isn't what I'm supposed to be doing with my life. Afterwards I happened to log onto youtube and this was literally the first video that popped on my screen. And I just want to express my gratitude. Thank you. Definitely what I needed in this very moment. Peace and Blessings.

I started playing when I was 11, played solid until I was 30, did recordings, did shows, then a new career stopped me. I am 51 and just started playing again with my first kit in over 15 years, I still played from year to year but not that much. Besides some stale chops and muscle memory a little sore, it feels fantastic to play again...NEVER QUIT!!

We all need this message from time to time. My drum teacher was a spiritual teacher more than anything. He always said the biggest obstacle to progress is not acknowledging the small signs of improvement. If you can play a paradiddle five BPM quicker than last week that is success! He also talked about Bill Bruford’s snare sound and how legendary that is. And that Bruford even said it came from what he thought was bad technique. Our weaknesses are just as important as our strengths.

Thanks for this video. I've started playing drums relatively late, around the age of 25, before that I was lacking the money (I was a university student) and didn't have any practice space. Now I play in two tribute bands, taking weekly lessions, trying to practice every day. Sometimes it's really hard to improve and it's time and energy consuming to play 3-4 hours on a rehearsal for both bands, but I'm trying to stay motivated. Your video helped me a lot when I was trying to quit, thanks for that.

But no matter how hard I try, it seems impossible. I just love drums so much. I Wana be able to play the way I hear it in my head. Idk what to do...but this speech was definitely encouraging.

I go through this a lot! It's so hard to progress sometimes. When I get into one of those phases I usually take a break for a week or so and usually when I come back, It's so much more fun. ALSO, what I do to help is write a list of things I can improve on and want to learn and chip away at it.... Bruce Lee said "If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." I never used to know what he meant until I became a musician

I agree 150% and your encouragement is really appreciated. Simple, forthright and easy to understand. Don't stop, don't give up.
I'd like to add another thing: just have fun when you're playing. Enjoy each and every moment you sit on your drums. No matter if you're a pro or an amateur*, no matter if you're a begginer or one of those awesome drummers we all know, no matter if you're amazing skilled or if you suck.... just enjoy and have fun when you're playing. And I say this for several reasons.
1st even the greatest stars have sucked at one point (and they probably still sometimes). And remember that we don't usually see them while they're practising and working on something new. They're human and so, they can also feel frustrated sometimes... but they don't give up !
2nd having fun doesn't mean you don't have to work hard, but if you enjoy it, it isn't so hard after all...
3rd we all know good, bad and average professionals in any job, but who are usually the best of them? those who really love and enjoy their job. When you're giggin', what's the best way to make your audience enjoy (that's your job in a gig, isn't it?)... exact, the best way is to enjoy yourself and transmit it to the audience.
4th as the popular saying goes here in Spain - where I am - "nobody is born knowing anything" (free translation).
5th take a look to all the skills you can have in any aspect of your life... what are you better skilled for, for those things that you love and enjoy doing, or those that you hate? Having fun with drums is the best way to learn and develop your drumming skills.
    * And finally, remember that a good pro should also be an amateur. In fact, the French word "amateur" just means "lover".
    So, don't stop, don't stop, don't stop, don't stop.... having fun !!!

I sincerely wish you the best in the pursuit of your dream. Keep on' plugging away, my friend.
Also, in Neil Peart's book, 'Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road', Neil talks about protecting & tending to that small, flickering flame that was left after the death of his daughter & wife within 10 mths. It's worth reading if you can get a copy of it.

Thank you so much for this video Stephen! Around last year, I had to go on a hiatus for about a month or so when it came to playing drums. I am someone who has dealt with depression and horrible Anxiety. When I am playing drums (or just doing anything in general), I always get thoughts going through my head such as "you will never be good enough" or to just "give up because it is not worth your time". Videos like this mean the world to me and I am really thankful that I now have something to go back and listen to when I get back into that state of depression. You're an amazing drummer and a great teacher that has taught me so much throughout the years. Thank you for everything :).

Great video Stephen. I hadn’t been able to practice my drumming regularly for a few months up until last week because of school. Going back to it is admittedly frustrating when I’m not as good as I was of I can’t play something I learned a while ago as well as I once could but you’re right. It’s not worth quitting. If anything it makes it more rewarding. Nice message and I hope people listen. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for that, Stephen! I've been studying for three years, and through this time I've thought of quiting several times. It's really hard to see I'm not getting better, or realize the time spent seems not to worth... but after seeing this video I know I can't quit. You just gave us a very important message. Thanks a lot!

You can truly never have enough positive reinforcement. Sometimes even with good individuals around us the journey of personal improvement can still feel like a lonely one. Videos like this remind us all that we are truly equal and more so that we are all in this together. The drive to get up every single day and go at this MUST come from within and this definitely needs practice just like our drumming. I've personal slowly learned to enjoy this process by firstly working my ass off but more importantly learning never to expect too much from others. Through teaching I've come to realise that people but way too much unnecessary pressure on themselves. We all started playing because it was FUN and it's easy to forget that sometimes. Learning how to love the struggle of practice along with finding your place in the industry in definitely a challenge but I think the first thing to understand is that the HARD WORK never ends. When I excepted that I started seeing real progress. What a wonderful message Stephen my man 👊
    The journey never ends 😀

Excellent advice, after playing blindly (got that phrase from an old drummer about 10 years ago) for almost 13 years, started to practice from start (i never got proper lessons on drumming), getting better with every time i play with my friends. Keep it up folks.

    hey Stephen, guys and Gals
I stumbled across this vid while looking for something to reignite my passion for playing as i was seriously thinking of giving up, i'm a 46yo drummer from the UK and have been playing on and off since i was 23 but had been passionate about drums since i was 13 and i'm only truly happy when playing, so many thanks Stephen for this vid as its prevented me from quitting and more than likley it being the biggest regret i would have. Life is really tough at the mo and practice is only once a week and with my current band, and it takes me an hour to drive to practice, so not much alone time to work on getting myself back up to what i was 10 years ago, But by God i'll find a way dammit. Anyway many thanks again and with repect to "We need your voice" i'm gonna take a chance and let you all hear my drumming voice from about 10yrs ago, which is the level i wan't to get back to (first goal :) ) have a listen it's basic stuff but its all original tunes, you may or may not like it but hey even with the mistakes i was quite proud of what i'd acomplished.

any comments, advice will always be welcome and will help me set new goals and improve which is what we all want right :)

One thing I’ve found myself doing over the years is that when I feel like I’ve hit a wall or my drumming has plateaued for a while, I’ll shift my focus to something different and I love it.
    -
Drumming for me comes in short “renaissance” periods where I’ll just get way better at something and improve a shit ton over a while and then hit that wall. After my drumming did that then I started focusing on rhythmic theory like polyrhythmic and metric mods and what not.
    -
I’ll quit when I’m dead though! Love your videos as always dude!

This is exactly what I needed... man, you're a great inspiration for me. I've recently been experiencing a glommy phase in my life, so chaotic and overwhelmingly depressing that I even thought of quitting drumms, but, you've just cheered me up to keep on going, and I'am eternally grateful for that. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND NEVER CEASE TO BE THE AMAZING HUMAN BEING YOU'RE!

Your comment about reflection and perspective is key. You may know where you're going, but you don't truly know a place until you are there. And even then things may change. I've been hung up on this or that groove and I just can't get all the components to cooperate. I'll practice it for hours/days/weeks - Nothing - It just won't click. Then, out of the blue, I'll be at a restaurant, a movie, on the bus/train, and bam! It pops, I get it! It's all of a sudden common place. Like I've been able to play it all the time. You are a wise man, Stephen. I appreciate your positive encouragement and insight. Thank you.

Thanks so much for this video it was just what I needed to hear. After not playing for 7 years after the breakup of my last band, I picked up sticks again and for the first time since I started playing at 13 really started studying and trying to develop as a Drummer with a capital d rather than just trying to be part of a collective. Just been offered my first bit of recording work since going it alone and deciding to try and become a rounded, freelance played, and although excited I am filled with doubts about not being ready or good enough. This message really got through. Thank you.

I needed to hear this. I've been teaching myself through your videos and other great teachers. Where I live every tutor I've come across teaches kids which I totally get but no one has time for a 54 year old. I've made progress by myself but would do better with tutor in person. Quitting has crossed my mind several times but hey what's the point of turning back now.

This is a inspirational grand slam brother Stephen. With all the chops fests and amazing display of drumming (and bass ) technique, it's easy to feel that you will never be good enough to hang. I've found that with patience, interaction with good teachers and musicians and playing whenever you can will help you get past the roadblocks that we encounter. Drummers of all skill levels are always in demand .

I recently left a band of 5 years for reasons I'm not willing to talk about on the internet, and was up until recently feeling like I should take a step away from drumming/writing/producing, just music in general. But I've been fortunate enough to have friends that kept pushing me when I didn't want to anymore, I joined a new band with all the knowledge I've compiled up until now and even took another step and started a solo project in a completely new genre of music as another release for myself. And I just have to say that I agree with you, it was the best decision I've made in a very long time and it was the simplest... I've seen a very drastic improvement in my attitude and my Outlook on what it is that I really want to do with my art form. And it all stemmed from three words.
    Don't give up.
