    Dear Mike,
I've praised your teaching before but I would just like to re-iterate how exceptional you are and say that this video is a classic of the Mike Barnes genre. You're an invigorating mix of musician, teacher and street-philosopher and, apart from using your walk-throughs of the Trinity pieces to guide my own practice and learning, whenever my confidence drops, I tune into one of your chats, like this one, and return to my practice room inspired. I'm 68, (badly) self-taught back in the late 60's/early 70 and now a couple of years into working my way through all the stuff I wish I'd learnt as a kid. I am also a teacher with over four decades of experience of teaching every age group, from nursery to post-grad. So not only do I know a good drummer when I see one but also a good teacher. And, to use your favourite word, Man: you are both.

Picked up a cheapish electronic drum kit a little over a month ago and heard myself telling someone yesterday that ‘I’m not progressing as fast as I’d like’. Interesting to stumble upon this video today and put me in my place. I’ve come to this later in life than most (almost 42) and am notoriously bad at sticking things out when I don’t see progress. I will now reassess my expectations and go easier on myself. Maybe by the time I hit 50, I’ll be able to keep a beat 🤣 Thanks Mike.

I feel like this describes me! I tend to give up if I don't see progress and I'm around the same age. I generally expect to go into grading after 2-3 months. this is interesting to watch and see that others have the same expectations as me!

You kept mentioning 'grades' in other videos of yours I saw when it came to Drums.. I have been playing on and off , casually for 20 years. and never had heard of the 'drum grades' .. . now I'm on a mission to find out where I stand.. it's appearing around grade 6 or 7 in a solid manner.. but we'll see.. Thanks Mike. From Canada.

Love the Mike Tyson quote about getting punched in the face. Great point you make about learning the rudiments and really nailing technique rather than just trying to learn the songs and get through the grades. My son's drum teacher always spends lots of time on exercises and drills to learn the rudiments and technique which ultimately helps with the grades!

Feeling guilty as I planned on doing a grade roughly every couple of months until grade 6! (Don't wanna be '60' before I get to Grade 8!!) I have been choosing my 3 favourite pieces from each grade to perfect and sight-read the rest but will now go over all other pieces more thoroughly having watched your video Mike! :)

I would encourage a drummer at any stage to join mikes members page. There is so much “advice” on other drummers’ pages about drumming hacks and not bothering with rudiments, what’s the rush? Why deny yourself the experience of learning 👍

Thanks for this. I'm almost 40 and mostly self taught, been playing for about 20 years.
I decided recently to see a teacher again and try go through the grades so I can qualify as a teacher. The man I saw has 35 years experience teaching, and after 1 lesson said at my level I could go straight for grade 8. (I learnt schism over 10 years ago and Rosanna about 5 years ago)
I said I'd rather work through the grades, honstly want it to take much less than 6 years though, seeing as I'm going into this with a solid foundation, I feel that with dedicated practice I can get through it fairly quickly.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums

Hi Mike... thankyou for that information... unbelievable care and help you give everyone.
I wouldn't have done what I've done without your tremendous help.
I have been very fortunate to know you and have you behind me... supporting me through drumming lessons .. with HEAD .. HANDS.. HEART....all of those are equally important.
Also it's funny that I didn't start my learning with you until very late in life, in my seventies, but it's shown me that age is just a number providing you have the concentration skills and abilities through health to play.
So I just want to say Thankyou Mike...you are a fantastic young man, looking forward to coming to see you on 21st November for a lesson, and 5th December too.
    Best wishes
    Colin

I’ve just done my grade 6 drums rockschool and logged the hours I done … from starting it till the day of the exam I logged 96 hours …. all self taught and for the exam I got a distinction ….. it’s not an easy thing to do it’s frustrating at times and by the time the exam comes round you are absolutely sick of the tunes your learning ….. but I’m now learning grade 7 …. I’ve logged 30 hours so far and learnt the songs really quick so it must be paying off the sight reading is getting a little bit easier …. Booked my exam for next feb I’ll be ready in plenty of time ….. I thoroughly recommend any drummer to have a go at grades as it’s an achievement and also gives you another way of playing using sight reading …. Good luck all🥁🥁

I’ve learnt family affair grade 7 from your video also cry me a river that six stroke roll at the end of the intro had me thinking until I watched your video so thanks …. It’s great to watch someone else play it and play it perfect … I learn from visual audio and reading it as well ….. I know over 100 cover songs for my band all learnt by ear but learning to sight read and play is a great skill to have I enjoy doing it and it has helped my drumming move forward …. Drums are a subject that is never ending which is great ….. thank you for putting so much great content on your channel it is brilliant and it’s what every drummer is looking for a bit of everything …. So thank you

The tough part, too, is whether or not your practice time is being well spent. It's very easy to use practice time inefficiently. Progress requires a good program, and usually a good teacher. It's very easy to get stuck at certain spots in the grades. Improving means you're spending a lot of time uncomfortable, concentrating hard, and struggling.
