Mold was a myth created by the pump sack lobby
🤣🤣
😂
Careful, you do Not want to run afoul of Big Sac..
I have some in my Big Agnes Rapide SL mat. In less then one year. But I don't care to be honest. 🤔
@@maKSimdoingstuff…when you let air out, don’t breathe the air just in case, the type of mold common from mouth filling the air mattress is quite toxic, linked to cancer some of them, not something you want to breath in. What you can do is once home, take average white vinegar and put 1/4 cup in and blow up, swish it all around, than hang while still blown up, let fluid out, use your sac to semi fill it and let it dry out. I do this every few hikes, keeps it clean and makes an acidic environment inside that mold doesn’t like. Good luck!
THE CAT!! That was incredible!! 😂😂😂
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
I was a brass instrument plater all through school and the instruments accumulate all sorts of gross black gunk that has to be cleaned out regularly. NPR reported in 2010 that mold and bacteria in brass instruments caused serious illnesses among some musicians who were particularly sensitive to them. So, I don’t doubt the honesty of videos from people who cut open their sleeping bags, and find nothing amiss, but there’s no upside to all the stuff that you blow into a closed space, and a small pump is an inexpensive and reasonably lightweight alternative.
Originally got the Tiny (Average) Pump for my sleeping pad for camping, but you know what I’ve done way more frequently than camping? Day trips to the beach or a local swimming hole, and because of the Tiny Pump I’ve been able to start bringing pool floaties and inflating them on site, which my friends LOVE.
I’ve absolutely felt the struggle of holding it to the nozzle and the embarrassing piercing noise it makes, so I might grab the new version. Also having the option to deflate will help a lot with packing the items down as small and tight as you can
I use an exped schnozzle pump bag, works on my exped and my thermarest. It’s lighter than the thermarest pump and it doubles as a clothes bag. Plus, you can use it in pump mode with the clothes still in it. Works like a charm!
Love my schnozzle too! You can use as a shower and do laundry in it as well.
Well Bryce, I have to say, of all the UA-camrs I watch, you are the funniest. You always leave me laughing. From one buckeye to another …thanks and happy new year.
The pump sack for my pad can double as a waterproof bag. On those days when I'm on trail during downpours, I'll put my sleep system and clothes in it as added security.
and with a bit of tubing... can blow to start a fire too... lol
I don't think the pump sack is waterproof because when I use it, the air escapes through the material. I think this is a safety feature that you can not over inflate the mattress past a certain pressure.
man i’m pumped to receive this product
I feel enriched by this information and verbally accosted at the same time lmao
I’m sold…just on the idea of having it to suck the air out! Attach as I get ready, and then my pad can be folded up neat and trim, no air pockets or messing around to get the last air out..time saved! Morning headache of a pad eliminated!
The main reason I ordered mine is that I have a bad back, bending over holding that tiny pump with nozzle’s don’t fit to the pad kills me. Is this one stays hooked to the pad reliably, it’ll be worth it. Ordered mine a few months ago, should be here this week finally!
I camp from my motorcycle (motocamping) and use a pump that doubles as a pump for my tires. But what I like about this pump is the vacuum feature. Sometimes I'm at a campsite for only 8 hours and setting up and breaking down is a whip. Part of the tediousness is deflating the air mattress. Trying to get as much air out as possible so it will pack down smaller. With the vacuum feature this could save some time and make the mattress pack smaller. And it would be nice if it somehow can be modified to use as a vacuum in the tent. No matter how hard I try there will always be a little dirt or dust or dead bugs in the tent and to use this to get it up before folding up the tent would be nice. Now I use a paint brush as a broom.
I use the pumpsack my Xtherm came with to also hold my sleep stuff - pillow, down hat, and booties. 7 sacks to fill my pad. I recently started using a Rex-Creations “PadPal” ultralight pump… 9 grams. 🤓
I need to seamseal my sack, loosing half the air through the seams
I mean... The pump pulls air from your surroundings area... If you are in a high humidity zone, you'll have humidity in your sleeping pad. You could argue that is is less than breath in most scenarios, but still it's also almost never completely dry unless you camp in a desert I suppose...
Man you could even keep it right in the pocket of your ultralight blow up doll super super great 😂
Some (most?) pump sacks do pretty well as a waterproof (resistant?) backpack liner
So now I’m getting stares for busting out laughing while watching this while on the treadmill. Thanks for the info and the laughs Bryce.
Good for starting fires too
I've been using one of earlier Flextail pumps for a couple of years now, and it's an absolute game-changer. Especially after hiking like 20 miles and knowing that a soft, warm sleeping pad is like 30 seconds away. Absolutely worth the weight penalty.
I just purchased one for bikepacking and the occasional foot powered camp out in the woods.
I use my pump sack as my backpack liner. Keeps all my stuff dry.
I hike and camp for periods of 1 to 4 weeks at a time. These pumps are useless to me without carrying spare batteries or charger and power banks etc. Now i know the weight is not much but what do i gain? Maybe 1 minute of time compared to inflating by mouth.
I'm 66 and have been smoking about 20 cigarettes a day for 50 years and i still have no trouble inflating a sleep mat. I don't use a pump sack either, that takes longer than using my lungs.
Manufacturers love gadget freaks because they will spend money on unnecessary items just to say they've got one.
If they ain't got the lungs to blow maybe they shouldn't be out hiking at all.
As for moisture from breath, in over 30 years of blowing into pads I've never seen 1 drop of water come out of them when deflating, even after a month of nightly use.
Good video 👍👍
So. Much. Trolling. Haha, this video was great fun and almost has me convinced to give this pump a try. I just hate adding that whine in the wilderness, but maybe it's not any worse than my wheezing after a long hike before I blow up my sleeping pad and pass out from exhaustion.
I'm an Amazon Vine reviewer and I got both my Tiny Pump 2 and the clamshell case from the Vine program. So I am absolutely dying for the Zero Pump to pop up on there so I can hopefully grab it up. When and if it does go on Vine I expect it will only last for a minute or two before they are all gone!
Hands down the best review of a product I have ever seen. Big props to you Bryce very creative. Now the one Con I have is I paid for one 2 months ago and they still haven't fulfilled my order.
Same.. should be shipping out in about a month hopefully! 🙏
I finally received mine!
@@ISuckatHikingmine should be here in a few days! 👏
Same here. What they told me is that they bulk shipped the orders from Asia to distribution centers in the US (probably by "slow boat") back on December 22. So they won't technically "ship" (via USPS) until they get to the center and scanned in. They said that should be around tomorrow (January 8). Crossing my fingers!
You know what would be even more perfecter?
I tell you because you're such a big influencer on tiny pumps:
What we really need is a pump that fills both sleeping pads and bike tubes. Carry two pumps when bikepacking, ridiculous.
That's a great idea! I think just having a variety of nozzles would work.
like my Sea to Sea pump sack B/C it is used as a stub sack for my clothes as well as a pump.
The Jokes in this one were top notch
It's possible mold cannot grow inside your sleeping pad because you are constantly inflating and deflating it. It can only grow in an anaerobic sphere. Try leaving a sleeping mattress for a year or so without changing the air inside.
Interesting!
I use a foam sleeping pad & it's my chair :)
Just ordered the zero pump. Had the Therm a rest before and was annoyed that she only fills the sleeping matt to 80%. For more the power of the pump is missing. Hope that this little beauty will work better.
That first video clip of cutting up a sleeping pad was Devin from Backcountry Exposure. I ended up buying a Nemo pad because of his recommendation... another great channel.
ok...that was a really good video. Great content and even greater delivery. I'm sold!
Finally got a shipping notice on mine
Love the shirt love the video too. Have an awesome 2024 hiking year!
😂😂😂👏👏👏 Pure wow, I’m excited about coming this channel. Like stand-up but with a purpose. Thorough test too. Thanks, man 💪😎
Great piece of writing, loved all the subtle elements that you built into the video.
My sleeping pad is full of mold. Still works great, tho
I wonder if the deflate option could be used for vacuum sacks....?
I have the Tiny pump and Flextail *claim* that it can be used for that. But I've never tried it; I have a dedicated pump for that in my kitchen. But the Tiny Pump does deflate a sleeping pad well, thats my main use for it.
I feel the same about just using my breath. Never worried about mold as my pads usually wear out first after patching a few times. That little gadget could change my mind. First time watching you channel, and I had to subscribe with your honest review and how much I laughed through it. Keep it up.
I like my tiny pump x more just bc of the light feature and it’s barely heavier
I’ve dropped mine several times while on the JMT and it’s still good to go.
Thanks for the code and great video, as always love the humor….😂 purchased ✅ what have I done, I have a chair and pump now 😱 bro do you even hike? Hahaha yes section hike and through hike bro…
They should make it with a USB rechargeable battery.
It basically is. It's a usb-c chargeable battery
Bryce, thank you for the discount code. I'm looking forward to giving this a try.
This channel gets better, second by second I watch, don't know how but love it hahahaha
Good video entertaining as usual. Good little pump I’m considering getting one , a light would be nice though. Good idea with the battery 😊
You are so entertaining, funny and clever! I always look forward to your videos, I only wish you posted more often!
Thank you! I really wish i could get more videos out but I actually spend weeks on these. I'm trying to figure out a faster system. 👍
I had the gen 1 version of the Thermarest NeoAir and it was very see-through. I inflated it with lung air and I never had mold issues, but what I could see happening over time (I used it for about three years) was the Mylar insulation sheet was wearing out around the inflation valve area. I’m not sure if the reflective sheeting has improved since then, but for a 50ish gram weight penalty it’s probably worth taking the inflation bag or electric air pump.
I try to limit relying on batteries especially when it is real cold. multi uses for this item only means the battery is dead when you need it. so does using the lite.
but you can use your lungs if the batteries fail. and it’s small enough to carry in a coat pocket to keep warm
I enjoyed the video - informative and humorous. I use a pump sack for my Nemo Tensor and it only takes four sacks to fill the mattress. I'm intrigued by this pump but not sure if I really need one.
One if the biggest differences/benefits is the fact that the zero pump has a axial flow design where as the tiny pump is a centrifugal flow design. Axial flow is more efficient and wieghts less.
Which battery charger do you use? If taking the pump on a long-distance hike, such as the Appalachian Trail, which charger would you advise to take?
I use a ravpower 10000 mah. It's sufficient for multi days a long as your not on your phone all day. Everyone is different though.
@@BryceNewbold Sorry it would be to recharge the battery for the the airbed pump. As it is there is no usb socket to recharge the detachable internal battery
How much do they cost and do they fit exped.
I used to be a pump sack die hard. Then maybe the third one failed. So I started blowing. Now I don’t know why I ever bothered with the pump sack. There’s just nothing to it, even after a long hard day in the rain. These things are just one more thing to buy, one more thing to worry about, one more thing to fail and create frustration where none is needed.
Buy one if you like, and allow that to be your only justification. It’s the only one anyone needs and it doesn’t sound boorish.
As a Pennsylvanian I've said AppaLAchian my whole life. That's correct for a Yankee.
Great video once again. I may have missed something here, but what is the longevity of the battery, specifically how many inflate/deflate episodes can this do before it is nonfunctional? This is something I find very important in defining whether I use a battery powered utility when backpacking, as there are no electrical outlets where I camp and hike. However, if you can recommend a solar charger that will work well on cloudy ambient light days as we have most often in the Pacific NW, I'd love to have a referral for one...
I don't remember. I think it's somewhere around 20 inflations
@@BryceNewbold Very good then. I can extrapolate that it would be half that at ten inflate/deflate cycles. Many thanks for your reply here...
I do like the convenience of my "tiny" pump, and will not go back to inflation sacks or lung power. It's fast, powerful enough that i usually don't even need to top off the mattress (25-in wide, 3-in thick.) Battery lasts through many inflations: max i've tracked is 7, plus using the light for a couple nights for maybe 10-15 mn, and blowing the campfire a couple times, and it looked like i still had plenty juice left. I do have the light on mine -- i like items that do double function: it's a decent lantern, saves some life for my headlamp. 3 downsides: a) it's noisy -- but since most all my regular camping buddies now come to borrow it, they don't seem to mind... b) there's no lock for the power button, and you can't take out the battery, so I did end up at least once with it mysteriously depleted when i wanted to use it. And indeed, c) once the battery is dead, the whole thing will end up in the landfill: mine has been going for a couple years of year-round regular camping, I trust it will last a while longer, but still...
No lock on this one either, but you can take out the battery. Plus, the battery is fairly standard, easy to source (at least in "civilisation"), i can bring spares for loooooong trips, or recharge it with a battery bank/solar panels/etc. I'll probably give it a try, thanks for the review.
Funny and great review.
Also majority of people dont use a pump sac correctly and got no real grasp of the bernoullis principle the pump sack is designed to take advantage of .
Pump sacks can make a great pillow... Just stuff it with your clothes and/or jacket
great tip!
Bryce,
I always enjoy your humorous presentations.
I got the same Tiny Pump that you have. I haven't used it a ton and the battery is already dying about 4 years in.
For myself, I'm quite happy with a pump sack. I don't have to charge up a pump sack. I don't have to replace the dead batteries on a pump sack. And the pump sack is faster, too. At least mine is. Without a doubt, not all pump sacks are equal.
Bryce, there's a good video for which no one has done justice - a comprehensive pump sack comparison extravaganza. Don't forget to use the word "extravaganza" in the thumbnail. That's an important. All caps in a phosphorescent color with high contrast would give you the maximum impact to draw in the big ad money, like Exxon-Mobil advertising money, Chevrolet advertising money, Cracker Barrel advertising money. Folger's Coffee advertising money. And the honey of all honey in advertising accounts, the Medicare Part B advertising cash cow.
Think of thar advertiser interest. Think of the cheering crowds. And as always, think of the children.
thank you!
First of your videos I’ve seen. You got me as a subscriber as soon as I was able to tell that you don’t take the extreme snowflake view of so many people when it comes to getting out into (apparently their) wild surroundings. A little humor and sarcasm goes a long way with me. 👍
Welcome aboard!
Been blowing into my roll
Matt for about 8 years . No mould
Great video! Very funny!!
Love your vids! You have such a great humorous personality on screen. I did Kickstarter for this pump. My channel doesn't get enough views to get free stuff. So agree about the Tiny Pump noise. Tom Loves DIY.
Trying to decide if you spent more time trying to write the jokes or edit this video 😂. And did I see a new apt background in there? Out of the basement?
How much they pay you?
Never been an air bag pump person either. I think they are ridiculous BUT I do know of people that use them as a dry bag for gear and pump for mattress at camp. Which does give them multi purpose. But naaa. I have same battery pump you got (no light) and use it all the time as a bellows and mattress pump but have heard good things about this new one.
Nice tshirt! Lol.... I use the tiny pump all the time... however, I thought I lost one of my rubbers (adaprters) in the Enchantments. They are a bit of a pain... this new version looks fun. Might have to upgrade. However, I do like the light... great vid Bryce!
A very entertaining review!
Yet another great video!! Thanks for sharing Bryce! -dave
Just found your content- enjoyed that. Great job
Welcome!
Never laughed so hard during a gear review! 10/10 review sir! Hopefully mine will get here soon
I just got mine this evening.
Huuuuh… which “tip” do I use for BA?
Glad you got one. I bought into the hype back in September and still waiting for my order. Hopefully I will get it before February 24' AT thru hike. Maybe a sign I don't need it anyway.
I just came across your video (and subscribed) and think it was a riot to watch! Why you ask? Because I just bought one for Christmas at the 15% off that Flex Pump was offering, what a coincidence! I think it is a great little pump and when I charge the battery, I will be careful my cat does not loose any of the parts.... good tip, thank you! By the way, when I use the little pump, my cat runs like hell because she thinks I am getting the vacuum cleaner out and going to get her tail...again. Great video, really liked watching it and glad I found your channel. You are a younger version of me...same sense of humor! Keep up the great job!
If you have mold spores in your breath, you probably have bigger problems than your sleeping pad.
Mine just arrived yesterday. All you said, Bryce, is true, except the suck part and figuring out which nozzle to use. The print in the included manual was super tiny (needed phone camera to read). The cryptic initials on the nozzles are a step up from previous version but still a bit of a puzzle. Also, not sure how to get it to deflate the Nemo Tensor. Did you have any luck?
I don’t find that song the pumpsack to be enjoyable so I see the value of these pumps. That said $50 for a pump is a lot. Having a light increases that value.
Amazing video Bryce 😂 Just crushing it!
Thank you!
No wonder Bryce labeled this video "A Backpacking Gadget TOO GOOD To Be True!".
The Flextail Zero pump sounds too good to be true because it is not true. It can't inflate any of my sleeping pads adequately so you can sleep on it. Flextail technical support even acknowledged that, yet Flextail does not want to take their inadequate product back.
Be very, very careful before buying this gadget.
So funny as usual! 😂
Thanks for this moment of laugh, even if I don't care about electric pump.
I ordered zero pump ages ago as a supporter
Bryce woke up and chose violence when he called me out for stealing (I prefer "borrowing" people's chairs the first moment I get a chance).... I didn't need that kind of self reflection today.
Loving this heavily biased review Bryce! Keep it up!
Hilarious review. You covered every pro & con about bringing an electric pump backpacking. I like bringing the pump despite the "dirty looks" from some of my purest backpacking friends, but also some peak their interest. These pumps are like getting a bag of dicks, its not for everybody lol. You convinced me to upgrade to the Zero. Thanks for acquiring a discount code. Happy holidays amigo!
😆😆 . Thanks Jeff!
Personally find pumps are useful for high elevation trips. Otherwise I get super light headed even blowing into pump sacks.
Game changer if you hike/backpack with heart failure
After this video, may have to upgrade, and sipping bourbon not bottle water
Like you, I am going to just use my lungs. BUT I did order this about a month ago for a supported trek next spring…no shipping yet though. Air sacks: the one that came with my exped (car camping) is waterproof, so it could be dual purpose. Valve doesn’t match thermarest😭. Love your channel!
Great video buddy
Well done 😂😂
I’m hoping mine arrives in the mail in the next month. Should’ve been here last month…
Love your style! Made me laugh multiple times. Thumbs up 👍
There is a headlamp on the market which uses the same battery, so you can get dual use out of the battery as well.
Downside is that headlamp is heavier, but that headlamp plus this pump is *significantly* lighter than my current pump and current 46g headlamp with TWO batteries.
With one battery, you then save additional weight.
Thanks Bryce, just used your code and ordered the pump, Happy New Year.
Awesome thanks! Happy holidays!
Your mom weighs next to nothing...yeah, I went there. Happy holidays 🎉
Yes! Thank you!
4:14 - my reaction when I see your face
I think this was a great video - I thought I knew you. I credit you in an earlier video where you said something to the effect of "when dealing with extra or more expensive gear, take into account exactly how many minutes or seconds of agony.....out of your whole day - maybe two minutes. I just climbed over a cpl 11 or 12 thousand foot mountains and somehow I don't have the lung power to breath for two minutes. And for all of you that feel like your going to pass out when blowing it up, I got news for you. Its a GREAT breathing exercise....breathe through that lightheadedness and further. You'll feel awesome and full of oxygen.
My lungs need no batteries, will work every time, and my big ass needs no help pushing that air out in the morning.
Less is always better even when the gear is pretty cool.
The pump bags should be criminalized for bulk, their intended use, and the ungodly lie that it can be used a a dry sack. ....a dry sack with no taped seams. blow it up, plug it up and pump the air out of the seams in just a minute - thats the water soaking in on your gear. its two minutes....it should be the easiest part of the day.
chears all
The only thing stopping me from buying this gadget is the inflation power. Flextail's website claims it inflates to 2.5kPa of pressure, or 0.36 PSI. However the ASTM standard for R value requires inflating the pad to 0.5 PSI. I've heard reports from several reviews that you need to "finish off" the pad with your lungs if using this pump because it can't get it fully inflated. What a shame, it otherwise looks like a really cool widget.
Flextail...😜😊
Uhm, the "link below" is dead link, i guess it's the "missing link".
