This week I will show you the restoration of this vintage coffee grinder. It has some rust and it's definitely well used so it's was a great project for restoring. I only saw a picture from the from when buying and surprise surprise, it was broken from the back. I'm really just trusting that these items are broken so they make more interesting restoration projects.
I started the restoration by disassembling the coffee grinder. I had no real trouble with it. The only issue was the handle that was stuck. But I got it off with a bit of oil and force. The bottom of the coffee grinder was broken so I wanted to replace it. I also don't think the bottom of the box was had the edge of the plywood showing so I changed it a bit.
For the steel parts I used a sand blaster to get rid of all the rust. Then I sanded all the parts that will be visible. No need to sand the hidden parts as that would only be removing material for no real reason. I sanded the parts up to 2000 grits. and then I polished them with buffing wheel. I used my nickel plating set up to plate all of the steel parts to prevent them from rusting again.
To restore the brass part I used ketchup to remove the oxidation. Ketchup contains vinegar that is the key ingredient. However ketchup is much less smelly and is easy to apply on the surface of the parts. Also the vinegar is diluted so I don't have to worry so much about the damage it could cause because it is an acid after all. Once again I used buffing wheel to polish the parts.
I removed most of the old wax from the wood with steel wool and turpentine. Then I gave the parts quick sanding. I made a new bottom as close to the original one as I could. I didn't have suitable wood completely dry so I microwaved it . When doing this you need to be careful not to go too fast but giving it smaller bursts. Then the parts were give new coat of wax and and I assembled the grinder.
Thanks for watching my restoration! If you like my videos, subscribe, like and share the video. It helps me a lot.

What a weird backhanded complaint/complement. If you usually hate wood and metal work why are you here? And yeah, obviously if anything you listen to through headphones is too loud you can turn it down, that's the entire point of adjustable volume. That's like saying "the sun is so bright and inconvenient, but I guess I can just put on sunglasses." No shit sherlock.

From someone that loves vintage and antique items, I have to say that this was very satisfying to watch. I own 2 coffee grinders. One has a porcelain bowl and the other is cast iron with some intricate designs on the grinder housing. It was very rusty when I purchased it and just like yours, the bottom wood was cracked in the back. All I did to it was put olive oil on the metal to try and preserve it. If only I had your talent! I wonder what it would look like restored.

This video is great! I watched this and started tinkering with mine for HOURS! (I'm not mechanically inclined) My burrs are rather dull but after watching this and some patience I got it working nicely. Just kept having to adjust the height of the burr until I could get a grind that wasn't too coarse and yet not too fine. Fine grind on dull burrs does not work well.....you'll be grinding for an hour. So I ended up setting mine up to a medium-coarse grind perfect for what I'll be using it for.

Ketchup can work on brass, but Flitz and a buffer is much more effective and produces a brilliant shine. Not only that, but Flitz is 100% food safe and approved by the USDA. Leaves no odor or taste. Simply shine and wash with soapy water. I've used it on aluminum cookware also, and the stuff is fantastic!

I have a suggestion to offer. Rather than sand the old finish or use a chemical stripper, which you seem reluctant to do and I don't blame you, I suggest you get a cabinet scraper. You can remove the finish from flat surfaces rapidly and with no more loss of wood than with sand paper, it's cheaper in the long run because a scraper and burnisher will last a long time so you don't spend so much on sand paper, and it produces a beautiful surface that takes a finish better because you don't clog the pores of the wood like when you abrade the surface.

Hey, I'm looking to try restoring stuff at home, will you ever make a video for absolute basics of restoring, like what tools a begginer have, some simple items that can be easily restored and stuff like that? Cool grinder too!

And u spoke for the first time 😲
      It was an ad... ok...
But u NEVER speak! And that's what I like most on this channel.
      Work without unnecessary blabla!

"I will do the ketchup trick"
    Ok explain the ketchup trick?

Ketchup is slightly acidic which is good for cleaning certain types of metals such as brass and copper. Alot of old antique items use a liberal amount of brass which is why ketchup is a popular 'trick' for restoration.

Ketchup instead of vinegar, smells better and already in paste form

Cheryl Hartwig You have to avoid cheaper ketchups which can contain red dyes, not the best choice for restoration. (Cheap ketchup is made from lower grade tomatoes, which are still wholesome but often partly underripe. If they don't dye it red it looks muddy grey in the bottle. The things you learn working in a tomato processing plant.)
