Yes, Porcupine Tree is total garantee of musical quality. But man, the groove of "The Sound Of Muzak" is something special. And "Prodigal" is so good too, i always get crazy when it ends 'cause the drum fill that ends the song is awesome. I love Gavin's work.

“Arriving Somewhere” sums up just about everything in the band, from etherial to metal and partway back. I think if you like that you’ll like most of the rest of their work.

This track "Trains" makes me cry because it is a love story set during war beginning with a nuclear bomb strike.....60 ton angel falls to the earth, a pile of old metal radian blur, scars in the country, summer and her.....Such a sad song.

Next stop: In my view Arriving Somewhere but Not Here from the sublime Deadwing album is perfection. It showcases perfectly all that is so great about Porcupine Tree - gentle emotion, vivid imagery, multi-layered harmonies, building up tension from accoustic to heavy, awesome musicianship, faultless production.... it's the one track of all my favourite bands that I would take to my desert island. You guys finally have got on the Porcupine Tree Train. Strap up its gonna be a long and amazing ride. Great choice!! Next has to be 'Arriving somewhere but not here' . Easily one of the most mysteriously beautiful songs written in modern prog.
Blackest Eyes, the first song on this album, is amazing too. The chord progression in the chorus is so lush and hypnotic. Whenever you get to Steely Dan again in the future I'd highly recommend you check out Boston Rag or Green Earrings. Both are very great songs by Steely Dan that are often overshadowed by their more popular work, but I think both songs are just as amazing as any of their more mainstream music. I know you'll love both of them.

PT had Richard Barbieri on keys. Barbieri was part of the Glam/New Romantic band Japan. Japan's primary composer and singer was David Sylvian. Sylvian has worked with many musicians, including Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Holgar Czukay, Jon Hassell and Bill Nelson, to name a few. His album Gone to Earth is a very special album and you might want to dig into that, or his collaboration with Robert Fripp on The First Day. Barbieri also partnered with Steve Jansen and with from Japan (and Sylvian's brother) for several albums. All are worth a deep dive.
There's a lot of great stuff from Porcupine tree. Check out The Sound of Muzak from this same album and Arriving Somewhere but not Here from the Dead wing album.

The Tree always delivers. If you can find it give a listen to Drown with Me. A b-side from In Absentia that is an overlooked gem. The harmonies alone put its over the top.
Well, I have seen suggestion for "Arriving somewhere but not here" and i personally recommended "Anesthetize", but a great song you will enjoy for sure a 100% is " The sound of muzak"

Love all your content! This band exemplifies musical excellence. Such great musicianship and being a drummer, I just have to give it up for Gavin Harrison; one of my favorite players. This was his first album with the band. He gets to stretch out at the end there! He’s a chop monster, but he plays so tastefully and musically here. I saw him do a drum solo on David Letterman back in the day when Dave had drum soloist week. Neil was there of course, but I thought Harrison was the best among all the heavyweights. Just a phenomenal, obviously jazz and fusion influenced player.

Listen to Blackest Eyes. Total mind of a serial killer vibe. Good P.T. songs to be found on Stupid Dream, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun albums, too.
Steven Wilson is I guess the modern day poster boy for prog and all its facets. Haken are a British prog band that seem to have wrestled the crown from Dream Theater and really well worth investigating. Try Cockroach King by Haken and see if it whets your appetite - what style of music do they play? All of them :)
I absolutely love Porcupine Tree, if you want to hear something similar to this style I would recommend "Time Flies" or "Piano Lessons". They have a ton of more proggy songs that everyone will recommend but the two I suggested are more straight forward and have the same nostalgic/contemplative mood.
I like the variety of music you react to. Keep it going. There's so much good stuff out there. You need to react to Rush 2112... The song (and album) that began their rise to Rock Legends.

Great song! Blackest Eyes from the same album Trains is on is such a great track that you have to react to. So many great Porcupine Tree songs... I can’t say I have a favorite album but In Absentia is definitely near the top along with Stupid Dream and The Incident, glad to hear you mention that one. Songs to React to are Even Less and Tinto Brass from Stupid Dream and Time Flies, Flicker, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover from The Incident.
If you want to melt down I recommend STEVEN WILSON "LUMINOL LIVE IN MEXICO CITY." About In Absentia: it's the first album with Gavin Harrison as a drummer, it was recorded in Manhattan, and Steven Wilson employed thick multi layered riffs of 15 electric guitars to produce "Blackest Eyes." It was also the first collaboration with Florida Man John Wesley and I would bet he is the one playing the acoustic solo. Wesley is not a studio musician like Guthrie Govan (who is like the Jeff Porcaro of electric guitar), but John Wesley plays so jazzily tender. He has a beautiful solo in the Chicago Live version of "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here."
Oh and while we’re on the subject of Steve Wilson and Porcupine Tree... a side rabbit hole to explore is the Opeth connection. Don’t know if you guys are familiar with Opeth but try something from the Damnation album, especially In My Time of Need. If you’re feeling adventurous try Master’s Apprentices from Deliverance. The Steve Wilson treatment is all over both those albums but those two songs are worth checking out.
If you loved this I think you both would love the Porcupine Tree albums Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. The album Trains comes from is when they started to mix metal elements into their sound but Trains would fit nicely on either of their previous two albums which have a bit more pop sensibility. You really can't go wrong with anything from Porcupine Tree but those are the albums that made me fall in love with the band.
Cool bit of music nerd knowledge, Chad Wakerman played a few shows with Steven Wilson which I had the privilege of seeing in person. Chad as you probably know was Allan Holdsworth’s drummer for many years. Steven has a gift of constructing these potent bursts of harmonically rich songs that are quite memorable. There was always a “poppier” edge to his approach that didn’t lump him in with the typical progressive rock band. This song is particularly great example of how he puts all the right elements in to make concise amazingly intelligent and beautiful songs. The whole album of In Absentia has great songs from top to bottom. You really can’t go wrong with Steven Wilson...

If you want to hear PT presence Pink Floyd in a big but original way, I highly recommend Dark Matter, Don't Hate Me, Fadeaway (Remastered), Gravity Eyelids or Glass Arm Shattering. The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 1 is also pretty awesome.
Hi again, 👋🏻 An album you have to listen to if you do not already know it, is El Cielo with Dredg. Kind of a modern The Wall. You hear clear influences from Pink Floyd but also from bands like Radiohead (Ok Computer) and The Cure (Disintegration). But they still have their own sound. El Cielo is a concept album about sleep paralysis. All songs sit together to create a whole, therefore the album should be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end to get the right mood and to understand the album. But to start things of you can go for the song Triangle! Or do the hole album 😅 Just found your channel, and I’m lovin it! Love from Sweden 😀
Nice reaction! If I may here's a suggestion from left field but I have a feeling you'll like it a lot. It's a song from the group The Sugarcubes. The song is "Cold Sweat". Bjork is the singer before she was a solo artist. It's a rocker, for sure.
The Steven Wilson/Opeth rabbit hole is definitely worth falling into. Please review Baying of the Hounds. Has some harsh vocals as well as clean, but is part of Opeth's catalogue that will blow your minds.
In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet are a must. The Incident is good but it was the last Porcupine Tree record. Those three albums that went before are even better. All those bands you mentioned are inspirations for Steven especially Pink Floyd and Radiohead.

I think you guys would really enjoy Jeff Buckley if you're not already familiar with his work. His music is hauntingly beautiful and his tragic story just adds to it. Grace, Last Goodbye, or Lover You Should Have Come Over would all be a good place to dive in.
Completely agree. All great choices. Jeff Buckley “Grace” is the best album of the 90s...period. A perfect album. Spiritual, beautiful, life affirming, despite his tragic end. Put your headphones on and dive in.
Probably my fave song, and off this album, which was the "1st" time ever hearing them. "Sound of Muzak" is my other fave, much like the topic of Rush's "Spirit of Radio". You have a large catalogue to dive into. But when you get around to LIVE footage, find this same track live . . . It's "Hilarious". I LOVE the studio track, but the live version is another animal altogether. "Deadwing" is probably my fave album, you'll get LOTS of requests from it. And the track you thought sounded like "Animals" Floyd is "Time Flies", I think that opinion is unanimous ;). You also mentioned these guys with "Radiohead" . . . A band with Mike Portnoy (with Dream Theater at the time), the original keyboardist of DT Kevin Moore (on your reaction for "Erotomania"), and Jim Matheos, the co-founder of Fates Warning on guitar, called; "OSI" that Portnoy said in an interview; "Its Dream Theater meets Radiohead". 4 albums to get into :).

That part is in 3/4 time, and I think the 4/4 swung feel is more the train on the rails (it is where that jazz swing came from)

To be completely honest with you guys, I highly recommend you listen to each of these albums from beginning to end because they are all truly wonderful experiences. 'Deadwing' , FoABP and The Incident are concept albums so all the more reason to get the full experience of each.

PT had Richard Barbieri on keys. Barbieri was part of the Glam/New Romantic band Japan. Japan's primary composer and singer was David Sylvian. Sylvian has worked with many musicians, including Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Holgar Czukay, Jon Hassell and Bill Nelson, to name a few. His album Gone to Earth is a very special album and you might want to dig into that, or his collaboration with Robert Fripp on The First Day. Barbieri also partnered with Steve Jansen and with from Japan (and Sylvian's brother) for several albums. All are worth a deep dive.
There's a lot of great stuff from Porcupine tree. Check out The Sound of Muzak from this same album and Arriving Somewhere but not Here from the Dead wing album.
Never noticed how the acoustic strumming for the main riff is mirrored by the clapping.

The whole album is great
Instant click! (I just did my own first PT reaction, literally minutes ago!) This is prolly a good starting point for PT... It gets darker, deeper and way more astonishing. "Arriving somewhere but not here" is possibly one of the best songs ever made and if "Lazarus" does not move you, check your pulse. "60 tonne angel, falls to the earth..."
Just finished listening to Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize. Most watch the live version but I prefer closing my eyes and just listening. And then to discover Alex Lifeson's input. That solo!!!!

I suspect this is the most-played song on spotify because it's the closest that Porcupine Tree came to a "audience participation" song. At PTree concerts this always got the audience joining in, if just to clap along with it.

The Tree always delivers. If you can find it give a listen to Drown with Me. A b-side from In Absentia that is an overlooked gem. The harmonies alone put its over the top.

I just have to give it up for Gavin Harrison; one of my favorite players. This was his first album with the band. He gets to stretch out at the end there! He’s a chop monster, but he plays so tastefully and musically here. I saw him do a drum solo on David Letterman back in the day when Dave had drum soloist week. Neil was there of course, but I thought Harrison was the best among all the heavyweights. Just a phenomenal, obviously jazz and fusion influenced player.

Thank you for reacting to this tasty song. In Absentia was my introduction to Porcupine Tree in 2016. My first thought was Pink Floyd and 90's Seattle (Grunge) had a baby. This whole album is cool. Listen to Blackest Eyes. Total mind of a serial killer vibe. Good P.T. songs to be found on Stupid Dream, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun albums, too.
Steven Wilson is I guess the modern day poster boy for prog and all its facets. Haken are a British prog band that seem to have wrestled the crown from Dream Theater and really well worth investigating. Try Cockroach King by Haken and see if it whets your appetite - what style of music do they play? All of them :)
I absolutely love Porcupine Tree, if you want to hear something similar to this style I would recommend "Time Flies" or "Piano Lessons". They have a ton of more proggy songs that everyone will recommend but the two I suggested are more straight forward and have the same nostalgic/contemplative mood.

Great song! Blackest Eyes from the same album Trains is on is such a great track that you have to react to. So many great Porcupine Tree songs... I can’t say I have a favorite album but In Absentia is definitely near the top along with Stupid Dream and The Incident, glad to hear you mention that one. Songs to React to are Even Less and Tinto Brass from Stupid Dream and Time Flies, Flicker, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover from The Incident.
If you want to melt down I recommend STEVEN WILSON "LUMINOL LIVE IN MEXICO CITY." About In Absentia: it's the first album with Gavin Harrison as a drummer, it was recorded in Manhattan, and Steven Wilson employed thick multi layered riffs of 15 electric guitars to produce "Blackest Eyes." It was also the first collaboration with Florida Man John Wesley and I would bet he is the one playing the acoustic solo. Wesley is not a studio musician like Guthrie Govan (who is like the Jeff Porcaro of electric guitar), but John Wesley plays so jazzily tender. He has a beautiful solo in the Chicago Live version of "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here."
Oh and while we’re on the subject of Steve Wilson and Porcupine Tree... a side rabbit hole to explore is the Opeth connection. Don’t know if you guys are familiar with Opeth but try something from the Damnation album, especially In My Time of Need. If you’re feeling adventurous try Master’s Apprentices from Deliverance. The Steve Wilson treatment is all over both those albums but those two songs are worth checking out.
If you loved this I think you both would love the Porcupine Tree albums Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. The album Trains comes from is when they started to mix metal elements into their sound but Trains would fit nicely on either of their previous two albums which have a bit more pop sensibility. You really can't go wrong with anything from Porcupine Tree but those are the albums that made me fall in love with the band.
If you like Floyd, try out Airbag from Norway.
Cool bit of music nerd knowledge, Chad Wakerman played a few shows with Steven Wilson which I had the privilege of seeing in person. Chad as you probably know was Allan Holdsworth’s drummer for many years. Steven has a gift of constructing these potent bursts of harmonically rich songs that are quite memorable. There was always a “poppier” edge to his approach that didn’t lump him in with the typical progressive rock band. This song is particularly great example of how he puts all the right elements in to make concise amazingly intelligent and beautiful songs. The whole album of In Absentia has great songs from top to bottom. You really can’t go wrong with Steven Wilson...

An album you have to listen to if you do not already know it, is El Cielo with Dredg. Kind of a modern The Wall. You hear clear influences from Pink Floyd but also from bands like Radiohead (Ok Computer) and The Cure (Disintegration). But they still have their own sound. El Cielo is a concept album about sleep paralysis. All songs sit together to create a whole, therefore the album should be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end to get the right mood and to understand the album.
But to start things of you can go for the song Triangle! Or do the hole album 😅

Nice reaction! If I may here's a suggestion from left field but I have a feeling you'll like it a lot. It's a song from the group The Sugarcubes. The song is "Cold Sweat". Bjork is the singer before she was a solo artist. It's a rocker, for sure.

The Steven Wilson/Opeth rabbit hole is definitely worth falling into. Please review Baying of the Hounds. Has some harsh vocals as well as clean, but is part of Opeth's catalogue that will blow your minds.

In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet are a must. The Incident is good but it was the last Porcupine Tree record. Those three albums that went before are even better. All those bands you mentioned are inspirations for Steven especially Pink Floyd and Radiohead.
Always look for the live version of the song. Porcupine Tree sounds better in live versions than studio versions.

I think you guys would really enjoy Jeff Buckley if you're not already familiar with his work. His music is hauntingly beautiful and his tragic story just adds to it. Grace, Last Goodbye, or Lover You Should Have Come Over would all be a good place to dive in.
Completely agree. All great choices. Jeff Buckley “Grace” is the best album of the 90s...period. A perfect album. Spiritual, beautiful, life affirming, despite his tragic end. Put your headphones on and dive in.

I would posit their 3 best songs are on this album- Blackest Eyes, Trains, & Sound of Muzak.
Besides a lot of Tool or Riverside songs, i think that the prog song that puts me the most easily in a meditative state is Gazpacho's Dream of stone.

Probably my fave song, and off this album, which was the "1st" time ever hearing them. "Sound of Muzak" is my other fave, much like the topic of Rush's "Spirit of Radio". You have a large catalogue to dive into.
But when you get around to LIVE footage, find this same track live . . . It's "Hilarious". I LOVE the studio track, but the live version is another animal altogether.
"Deadwing" is probably my fave album, you'll get LOTS of requests from it. And the track you thought sounded like "Animals" Floyd is "Time Flies", I think that opinion is unanimous ;).
You also mentioned these guys with "Radiohead" . . . A band with Mike Portnoy (with Dream Theater at the time), the original keyboardist of DT Kevin Moore (on your reaction for "Erotomania"), and Jim Matheos, the co-founder of Fates Warning on guitar, called; "OSI" that Portnoy said in an interview; "Its Dream Theater meets Radiohead". 4 albums to get into :).
