Thanks for the videos. Great old bird. I flew the Mad Dog at AA for some 20 years as copilot when they first arrived, and Captain until I retired, and loved every minute of it. AA did a great job of maintaining and supporting the fleet. The engines were great - I only lost one... climbing to 370 at 4AM between Phoenix and Chicago. Diverted into Kansas City, and it turned out to be the fuel temp sensor was all.
Thank you for posting this it brings back memories to me I worked at McDonnell Douglas as a flight ramp mechanic and of all the aircraft the MD 80s were by far my favorite they were just so reliable no computers to run anything the empty 90s that was a different story and I also worked on the 717KC 10s MD-11 finish my career on the C-17
I'm a retired American airline employee I had the privilege to work on them and fly these planes. They are truly great planes. And truly a work horse THANK you md80 .
I’m sad to see the Maddogs go. I think that how long these aircraft stayed in service for really speaks volumes about how reliable and useful these aircrafts are. Many of these Maddogs have outlived numerous 737s and A320s.
Kent I guess this was MD best aircraft they ever made ever this thing is bulletproof and reliable speaks a lot of bout boeing Nd MD espeicially after they merge
My all-time favorite aircraft. The aesthetics, the power, and the quirkiness of the design will never be seen again. Proud to have flown on them for well over 2 decades and will sorely miss their silver gleam over DFW.
Always looked like there was not enough wing for it, but had good thrust to weight and was quiet compared to 727, 737-100, 200, DC-9's, skin flute engines.
Probably the last jet that a pilot actually had some control over instead of the plane flying itself. I'll miss them. I still miss the 727 and its overly loud engines!
We will never see the beloved silver livery again. The MD-80s were the last to use the silver livery and it just looked so beautiful. So sad to see an amazing aircraft like this go. You will be miss. ✈Farewell MadDog MD-80 ✈ - 1983 to 2019 -
Can confirm, I still recall a family trip where my dad was the pilot and he added a bit to the end of the preflight announcement for my younger brother and I to be good for our mom!
I'm going to missed McDonnell Douglas MD-80s. These wonderful airplanes shouldn't retired and I'm glad to fly one of these airplanes because it's something that I will keep my memories as a childhood now as an adult grown up I will never forget those airplanes. Gone but not forgotten. RIP MD-80's from 1983-2019.
I hope they display on a museum of American Super80/MD-80. I can't believed they retired wonderful airplane. I wish i could a fly for last time before they retired. Farewell MD-80.
A true pilot’s and avgeek’s airplane. I used to hate flying on these but as I fell more in love with aviation I saw their true beauty. RIP silver bullet!
THE B747 IS OFTEN CALLED "THE QUEEN OF THE SKY"...BUT FOR SOME OF US THE MD SUPER 80 (IN THE AA LIVERY) SURELY EARENED THE TITLE "PRINCESS OF THE SKY"! WHAT A GREAT TRIBUTE! THANKS.
I used to flew with American MD-80 several times. I was flown from EWR to DFW back to EWR several times. It kinda of small airplanes. It was 2 seats on left side and 3 seats on right side of cabins. Cool flights.....
Nice to see San Diego to open the video. There was a time when AA had the STL, ORD and DFW routes from SAN exclusively on MD80's, so we got a ton of them. That was right after the TWA buyout.
Robert MacArthur Delta’s MD-88s and MD-90s are unfortunately already gone. They were retired on June 2 in Blytheville, Arkansas. Delta announced that they were going to cut at least half of the 717 fleet, but luckily not all will be retired.
beautiful plane and powerful engines make this one attractive workhorse. of its time. will miss seeing these beauties for sure, thanks for many years of safe and reliable service!
You’ll find that on nearly all aircraft with the engines at the back. Having the wings further forward would upset the center of gravity and cause excessive pitch up.
The most beautiful planes are the ones with the engines in the tail IMHO, now almost all new airliners are the same thing, 2 boring high bypass turbofans under the wings, gonna miss those noisy JT8D!
Question.....for you Just Planes ? If the 737Max is still grounded , would American Airlines not need the MD-80 to fill needed capacity, until the 737 Max issues are resolved? That would be my thinking of the situation.
Fred Kuglin they have close to 1000 planes lol wouldn’t hurt them tht much for small carriers yea they would have to waited out American Airlines is the biggest airline in turns of fleet Nd other categories that I’m not sure about
I remember when these MD-80s would fly at 10,000 feet in Glendale Arizona. Like the 2000s and early 2010s. They sounded really loud even at a high altitude. Not as loud as a fighter plane but for a commercial plane.
This was always the loudest plane taking off from San Diego while I was at MCRD during boot camp in 1996 and again while there for recruiter school in 2005. You could always tell when one took off.
Without the md80s American airlines won't be what it is today atlaest there not all retired Delta and other carriers operate them ........ these are amazing planes

The last MD 80s built were delivered to TWA which end up merging with American so American got the very last MD 80 ever built

MD planes are simply raw power with elegant looks
Not when it’s on the ground and in pieces.
@@springbok4015 Don’t be a fool, these aircraft were built exceptionally well. Hence why they still fly today, decades after their introduction.
@@aviationlba747 Yep, that wasn't my greatest comment. My apologies.
I enjoyed it they will be missed. They were one of the best airplanes out there.
Nothing beats sitting under the departure path and listening to those babies purr.
Sad to know I missed the golden age of more diversity in the skies. Beautiful aircraft.

737 architecture including the Max is still about the same age as these, DC-9s, etc...
Scott Goodwin 747s, 757s, 767s and even the 737NG are still planes that require a real pilot

R.I.P American Airlines MD-80 and Silver Metallic livery 1983-2019 "You'll be remembered in our hearts forever."
When I was a child I saw MD 80 on SKBQ and wondered how much metal shining was spent on those planes 🤭
All McDonnell Douglas commercial jet planes were beauties.
0:10 Awesome! You can actually see the wake turbulence/vortices!
American Airlines MD-80 was a symbol of America.
I've actually been on a couple of the Douglas variants that used reverse thrust to do their own push back..
the last remnants of the old empire have been swept away... thx boeing

My favorite seat it's in the back with the Lav, the Galley and the 2 engines around. Love it! Very confortable
Great job JustPlanes! At least Delta still operates the MD-88, the MD-90, and the Boeing 717, which started off as the MD-95.
When do you think Delta will retire their McDonnells?
@@mrbyzantine0528 Good question; I have no idea. I'm sure they'll retire the MD-88s first, since those are the oldest ones.
