      @Robert Hall The longest lasting of the airline, from the late 60's (68 I believe) right up till the merger in 2015. Silver Eagle was a shining star of good design.

    • @Dana_Danarosana
      @Dana_Danarosana 5 років тому +3

      @Robert Hall AA started painting aircraft in 2013 with their 787 order as they wanted the fleet to match... and the 787's composite makeup meant the "bare metal look" was impossible. They left the MD-80 series in the bare metal livery in anticipation of upcoming retirement... just made sense financially. However, they've been painting the tails for years to keep livery uniformity with the A-300s as those have composite tails.

    These, the 707, & MD80 series of jets were the TRUE ROCKETS of commercial aviation. They sure didn't sound like the jets of today with "hush kits" and other modern technology. You seriously thought a NASA rocket was taking off folks. And i loved every bit of it.

    I had my favorites such as the L1011 and 757, but nothing fascinated me more than a 727. Such a sleek design. Growing up near JFK, those birds were loud but awesome looking. I flew on several Pan Ams, TWA, and Eastern in my young days. Even got to fly on a Piedmont 727. But probably one of my favorites was on Iberia when on several occasions while I visited my family in Spain, the rear stairway was used to board or disembark since many airports lacked air bridges in the 1970s and 80s.

      ...yeah plane spotting back in the 60s and 70s was far more enjoyable. Caravelles, 707s, 720s, 727s, DC-8s (standard and stretch) Convair 880s/990s and the somewhat rare but beautiful BOAC VC-10 as well as the widebodies.
      Where I live (PDX) it's now pretty much just 737s, Airbus 320s, and RJs. About the only big ones we get anymore are DC-10Fs, MD-11Fs, and 767Fs for DHL, FedEx, and UPS and until February 2022, an occasional AN-124 for Volga-Dnepr.

    If boeing put leap engines on the 727,

    • @bcshelby4926

      ...they would have needed to redesign the entire tail area to accommodate the larger diameter engines. Even if they could have upgraded it with CFM 56s, what contributed to its demise was the old analogue flight deck and 3 person crew requirement By the time the 737NG entered into service, the 727 had depreciated in value to the point that such a refit (including a full glass flight deck) would have cost more than what the aeroplane was worth and by then twin jets were taking over its market.
