English do have the best archers, but one can argue that the French have the better archers. They basically have Yeoman longbowmen with better armor minus the deploy stakes
Which of course ignores the availability of these units. The English can easily build an army around Longbowmen and likely deploy their more elite Longbowmen in more critical positions to win the battle.
The French are better off building an army around their cavalry.

I hate when u give them attack orders and they fail to drop pikes, and get routed in 45 secs
You should always use Pikemen in defending situation, having them standing stationary to receive enemy charge
Hit the backspace button when the enemy makes contact with you pikes then order them to attack. Otherwise stack 2 pikemen together like you see here or with a unit of swordsmen
Defensive stance and just have them not move
maybe 7 seconds sometimes XD

I remember fighting a stack of crossbow militia and knights with two pike units and a Spearman in that circular formation in a siege. I legit had to be overwhelmed and even then the attacker lost half of their army, lol.
Yeah 👍. Putting your Pikemen in this formation at the gate is the most effective way to defend.

It's very historical. Scotland were famed for their use of the pike during the late medieval period.

Best way to use pikes in M2 is not to use them.
You can use them at choke points as gates, corners...They perform very well in phalanx.

Started my total war binge two months ago. Already gotten 400~ hrs cumulatively between a couple games. Medieval being the first, WH2 being second, and Rome Classic being third

just delete their secondary weapon in the game files and lower their attack to 3, 5 or 6 (early, mid, late units) to balance them (my preference, i tested them quite much)
Can do the same for halberds too, but give them higher attack, since their range is shorter (5, 8 and 10)
i also decreased their rate of attack from the value of 25 to 100

M2TW pikeman we’re supposed to work like RTW phalanx but we’re bugged and never fixed. If a unit got close, the men would drop their pikes and switch to swords. I think only Kingdoms and mods like Stainless Steel fixed this problem.

I do miss the good old days of RTW where you could stack two pike units on top of each other and it would shred through everything with minimal casualties

@@gabrielepopa6870 I never played RTW but I'd say it seems logical to me, twice the pikes would probably deal much higher DPS against an enemy unit since the number of forward facing pikes in the same area is doubled, and I suppose there's a cooldown in damage dealt (otherwise it wouldn't take any damage by swordsmen) by a model so it'd make it really hard to go through
@@theortheo2401 the problem Is how the unit behaves, if you put 2 units with a phalanx stance on top of eachother, instead of staying idle to receive the charge they keep on moving trying to close spaces because the other unit creates more spacing between the unit. Maybe on a loose formation will work
Charging into pikers is probably the stupidest thing you can do when they're in phalanx formation

I miss hearing different accents made me feel like I was actually them. Yes it’s still there but very streamlined. Also the dread system was nice too, they could’ve added on to that with higher morale or public order bonuses

The problem with Piked is not the pike itself not doing anything, is that they don't use them
If a Unit gets too close, then the pikemen are going to take out the sword and Fight like a normal infantry Unit, a really bad one, so they always get overwhelmed. This worked in Rome Total War but with the change in the units being more individual, this doesnt work that well
A really easy and most used method to fix this is just removing the sword from their weapons and they will use the piked as they are mean to be
And if not, well, doing What are u doing, but if You need to do that to them being effective is better to fix them or don't use them
Removing their swords makes them so powerful, unbalanced

Yes, Pikemen is for the Cavalry. But when you're facing enemy infantry, this is an effective way to counter them.

Against enemy infantry, turn off Guard mode! You did the right thing

@@kingster14444 Yes, turning off Guard mode lets your Pikemen move on to rush the enemy and kill them. Guard mode ON makes the Pikemen stand still and hold their ground in defensive formation, they don't attack so they cannot kill the enemy

I'm pretty sure these guys were bugged. I could never get them to properly block a breech in a wall while defending.
Yes, it's hard to use them effectively. You can try my tactic at the breech of the wall for better result

I once had a full card of pikes built at inverness as i was preparing multiple armies for an attack on england. This was just before those 2 huge general led armies spawn off the coast. They launched an attack with both armies on inverness and i was massively outmatched.. i had to try launch a counter from inverness as my army was depleating during the siege so i countered and hoped i could hold the walls... They never attacked. I had to march outside the walls and face the battle on the open field.. i seriously thought this was going to be a wipe and id loose inverness.
To my surprise the lines held and i literally wiped out both the full armies at the cost of about 70% of my own force.. must be easily 15 years ago but still one of the most surprising battles ive ever had😅

Agreed with you about the Pikemen but not cavalry. In Med2, cavalry is already strong, both in prolonged melee combat and on the charge.

I’ve found that if you position heavy infantry between the enemy and your pikemen (sort of ibetween the pikes) then your pikemen won’t drop their pikes, and will use them in conjunction with your infantry.

I love Total War games I own almost all of them from the first Rome and Medieval and Shogun to even the fantasy Warhammer. But Medieval 2? Is my most favorite of all of them and my most favorite factions is The Holy Roman Empire and Spain. In almost every campaign I’ve ever played those 2 factions made great Allies! I had one campaign where the Spanish Armies would always aid me in battle via Land and Sea engagements. 😊

Against Cavalry, you should turn on Guard mode
Against Infantry, you turn off it.

I usually use 2 pikemen or 1 pikemen 1 spearmen together. 1 in front the behind the first 2 row. (Unit usually 3-4 deep) and without guardmode with this the front unit hold the line and the second line start pushing and killing the enemy

Pikemen in Med2 are hard to use effectively, not OP as in Rome 1
Use it on the bridge and you will swamp all of your enemies by one unit.

I always have at least 2 units of pikes on my settlements and always allow them to break the gate. That will choke the enemy into a tight wall of spears which will cause massive loses to them. I have beaten the Mongols like this multiple times with only 5 units on a settlement as they always rush into the breach.

5 units is mad those Mongol are menace. I play as Islamic faction so can't defend with pike's and they spawn on your doorstep it's not easy. Defensive sieges with spears and archers with some catapults and a ballista and your good to go beat a whole 2 full stack mongol army that but the third was too much just can't kill that many units without taking losses
Try to upgrade your castles at doorstep to maximum level as soon as possible. It'll help your siege defense very much, I think you can deal with 3rd stack in highest level castles.

I recommend using a melee unit like swords, axes or spears a bit in front of the pikes with two lines in front it works keep both defensive and

simple If the pikes are on the defensive, they hinder the enemy advance, which makes it easier for the melee soldiers to battle
At any given moment, if you want, you can deactivate the defensive of the pikes to make a push on the enemy, gaining a little ground.

A single noble pike can beat a dfk like 1/10 times if you just click stop and attack again when a few of them have drawned their swords. This makes them draw their pikes out again for a few seconds. But its best not to use pikes they are not worth the time.

you show a line of pike.... but nothing to guard the flank of your pikemen. nor a ranged screen for your pikement to engage enemy ranged units.
Because there is an infamous bug in Med2 about Pikemen, they always switch to swords in prolonged melee combat. In my video, I'd like to show how to overcome this bug.

Or you can do what i did, go into the M2TW data files using their unpacker tool, and removing the swords they swap to. I just delete the line of code with the swords on all pikeman units and, bam pikemen work as intended.
