Total War: Shogun 2- How to Attack

  • Thanks to mvendi86 for suggesting this. This is taken live during a battle from beginning to end and shows the movements, control groups, formations, etc. that I use during battle. I didn't quite say this too well, so I'll say it here: to get your guys moving into the charge, click and drag on a point directly behind or in front of their line, adjusting the width to be about as wide as their line, to get them running towards the enemy in an orderly fashion then individually order units to attack, but only just enough to hold down their infantry line. Save the rest for reserves to deal with developments. It's in singleplayer so I could pause and comment and stuff, but look for live online replays coming in the future!

    In campaign mode (Single-Player) I usually try to win without much of a fight.
    Gaining the advantage before the battle is the best strategy.
    I rarely have big difficult battles, since I usually have at least two Generals ready to intercept the enemy army coming my way.

      Just keep on playing man Ive spent like 2 years playing on and off and I still couldnt manage to complete my first campain on NORMAL, playing as Chosokabe. watch a few vids on youtube and you'll get there. And it feels amazing and im off trying on hard mode soon :)

      @Gerry Buckets Well first thing I took over the little Island you start with as Chosokabe. Take the trade nodes to the west, make friends withe the closest ones so they dont just attack you and then take the Island to the west. After that you can chill a little and start upgrading farms and such so you get nice income and start building up your big army, I had 2 fulled stacked armies in the western Island and 2 in my own. I started by going in closer to kyoto with only 1 fully stacked just to get a foothold and kept the other army home. With other 2 on the western Island, just start plowing through killing everyhting in your path until your just outside of Kyoto borders. By then you should have build some defence with 2 groups of navy one to the north and south to keep you clean from all the harassment from others.

      Well the three strongest powers have declared war on me and I don’t know how I remove the negative relations. My ally was very strong but got gang banged from my enemies and know is crumbling. I first was ok in battles but only in small ones and know I’m late game and I nearly lost to an army little more than half the size of mine :( (this is my first campaign) I have the game since two days and have about 11-12 provinces and my 2 of my enemies are allies and together they have over 30 provinces I’m so screwed I managed to conquer some castel that were unprotected but the main army just takes them back and my new provinces dislike me so I have to either don’t tax them or I have to use some of my few troops in the garrison and I NEED those troops can anyone help ? Some tips ?

      @@Ch-ew9tm just take it slow when you're expanding man, a newly taken enemy territory has a Resistance to invader penalty to the town's order, you can see it when you press the town's name in the bottom left corner, which can take 5-6 turns to gradually deplete. If you're in a pinch with -1 or -2 to order without it going to increase or decrease then just recruit 1 or 2 units in that town. Order can also decrease if that land has a different religion to yours, in which case you have to build a religious building ( e.g: Buddhist Temple if you're a buddist, Chappel if you're a christian) to convert them, having a religious agent standing in that land can also help to convert it faster. You can even put an agent into the town to increase the order (e.g: a monk or missionary can increase happiness in a town). Buildings like sake den and buddhist temple (or chappel) can also provide happiness to the province. Lastly, investing in the way of chi arts provide some solid bonus nation wide (e.g: Zen gives you +1 happiness nation wide, Tea ceremony gives your daimyo +1 honour which is beneficial since having high honour makes your people happy, your general loyal and better relation to other clans.)

    I guess I think too much like a Hellenistic player, since I played a lot of Rome before moving on to Shogun. I tend to use ashigaru spear walls up front to pin down the main enemy force and then flank with swords and cavalry; sometimes with matchlocks too for added morale damage.

  • @peterchuvalov

    @elesararwos i think many people underestimate the ashigaru spears - they r very good against cav and can really slow down the opponent's melee charge.
    If u put them in spear wall u can hold off the enemy charge for longer which would allow your own infatry and cav to flank in the mean time the opponent and deliver a crucial blow!
    however if u want to quickly withdraw them after opponent's charge its better to not have that wall since it will slow ahigaru down. Hope that answered your question)

  • @WhiteSlift
    @WhiteSlift 12 років тому

    I heard it is advisable not to rely on samurais exclusively and always have yari ashigarus attack in the first line to attack the enemy infantry first. Cause they are cheap to replace and can tie the enemy line long enough and only use the samurais as support unit when the ashigarus are in trouble.

  • @Marlfox70

    What's the best way to defeat an army on a hill? I only play the campaign against the comps on very hard and if you're on the offensive when fighting in a field almost every time the enemy will be able to set up on some nearby large hill which means extremely heavy losses on my side (and likely a loss). I try to send units up the least steep part of the hill and do what I can to surround it but I feel there should be a better way to handle that.

  • @nicstamo69
    @nicstamo69 12 років тому

    It works if they are predominately Ashigaru, but if they are mainly using samurai, which they will be as the game progresses, the Ashigaru will crumble and break, ruining your line and losing you the battle. Samurai's have much higher morale and with a general present will just about fight to the death most of the time.Once you can afford samurai melee units en masse always better to make them the basis of your army

    hi man! I haven't played shogun 2 but i played some older total war games (RTW, Medieval 2 total war mostly). I was wondering if infantry are the most important if you're attacking. I always lose so many units when I'm attacking cause my enemies turtle up (which is what I like to do when I defend). I know you have to use archers to pepper down the enemy and cavalry to flank, but is infantry (charging em against the enemy) the most effective way to win when attacking?

    Good tactics (and army composition) for a drawn-out hand to hand confrontation. With so many katanas, in order to win your opponent would need a handful of elite cavalry combined with lots of ranged units, or use a "defense in depth"/skirmish strategy and avoid melee confrontation if possible, harrassing the meat of your army (your katana swordsmen) before taking the initiative and charging in.

    Ashigarus can be a meat shield, to absorb Matchlock fire or Charges, but u cant rely on them they can rout so easly, Samurai & monks are hard to rout so u can rely on them, use the ashigarus to defend ur lines from cav, or meatshields even to support ur lines with loan swords, but on Land battles Samurais are way betters, on Siege if ur defending no matter what unit u have and what moral they have if they fight under the fortress they will fight till death

    Troops can get a Moral shock if they are low on moral even yellow, they can rout, and make all ur army to Chain rout, so its better to protect and Guard your general, even if you are a Melee, general its not too big when a melee die compared with a leadership general still you can get Moral shocked

    really? Because when i play against ai (in past total war games), I find that archers are not very good offensive units (usually best when used defensively) and that cavalry aren't good when used offensively if your enemy has yari units to counter. I usually just rush with a huge army of infantry and try to flank the enemy infantry/missile units with cavalry. But the infantry tends to be the core, like you said.

    how do you make control goups? 00.40

  • @n0denz
    @n0denz 10 років тому +2

    I have some questions for you:
    1. What purpose do matchlocks serve? Based on their stats, it seems like they are inferior to bow ashigaru. Their range is shorter than archers as well! I also don't understand their rank fire ability. I'd assume that makes them behave like line infantry in Napoleon, but it just seems to hamper their offense.
    2. What advantages does high ground give you? Does it increase archer range or put a penalty on enemies attacking uphill?
    3. In a protracted battle, shouldn't spear units fare better for having a higher defense with katana damage dropping off after the initial charge?
    4. In the beginning of this video I saw you make control groups. Did you start off with making one single group, setting a formation, and then breaking the units up into smaller groups i.e. infantry, cavalry, missile?

    • @dantchernov4532
      @dantchernov4532 10 років тому +7

      1 Matchlocks Can drop morale INSANELY Imagine seeing More than half of your friends drop straight away with then being a LOUD BOOM use them to wreck morale so flank and fire.
      2 High ground allows a faster charge and as you can imagine walking up a hill does not allow you to gain charge damage and it makes you slower, in other words they are weakened while your charge is FASTER and STRONGER.
      3 Im sorry I don't really understand the question but a lot of katana defensive techniques are to stop stabs a yari is a generaly a stabbing weapon something the katana samurai is skilled at manouvering around However just use katanas against spears that's super effective.
      4 at first He had a just a plain unit card formation which does not allow you to press lets say 1 and All units in a certain group will be selected he had no groups off the bat yet he build groups. the way I would advise for you to use groups is Katanas together Spears together Cav together Bows together Keep your general out of the action but near your troops the blue circle is where the gen provides extra moral.
      Im answering your question because he won Fishsandwichpatrol has stopped making Videos or using UA-cam D:
      I hope this helped you some way.

    • @Barkend3
      @Barkend3 10 років тому +1

      The high ground also gives you an advantage when using the matchlock. A matchlock unit will not fire if there is a friendly unit between the matchlock and the enemy. So usually you need to send the matchlock to the flanks, where they will fire at will.
      But if the matchlock is on a hill and you have melee units fighting the enemy in the lower ground, the matchlock can fire OVER your units to hit the enemy without needing to go to the flanks.

    It's always could to keep a few yari ashigaru kicking around, if only for cannon fodder. Spearwall allows them to hold up any charging units while your samurai sweep in from the flanks, very quickly taking them out. They'll be decimanted, for sure, but 3 units of yari ashigaru lost is better then half your army heavily damaged. For obvious reasons, this only works against the AI (or stupid players)

    Couldn't you have just picked a yari samurai unit to flank the general instead of the katana samurai since you were focusing on his general which a yari unit has a bonus against.

    Can you substitute yari ashigaru for katana samurai? and would you advise putting in more range troops?

  • @Luke_Danger

    So, a question. How would you suggest attacking in tight terrain - that is, you can only have one or two units in a fight at a time? Playing Rome: Total War I had a battle against the Carthigineans that on paper was a curbstomp melee battle because I had a lot more superior units and in enough numbers, but while pushing into the town square I was actually losing for a while because all my units were suddenly getting tired despite mostly just walking to the fight and most of them not actually attacking, just getting tired being part of the back. I managed to win by disengaging a few in the back so they could rest and letting them launch some pila, but I'm curious as to what your advice is. I've tried to apply some of your suggestions for Shogun 2 to that (IE, skirmish, have a core of what I want for armies, etc.), but I'm curious as to this. I know Shogun 2 has a lot more wide areas, but I'm curious.

      Try to identify which units are attempting to engage and not engaging and pull them out. Bring them around to any flanking position. Usually in those town situations you can send units "around the block" and come in behind the enemy to start a rout.

      Alternatively when you have tired units at the front, pull them out and replace with fresh troops and walk the tired ones around the back or flank, maybe after getting some fitness back.

    Great tutorial, but a little bit unrelatable to most newbies because most new people (like me) who are just starting out the campaign wouldn't have the capability to buy that many Katana Samurai or those two Samurai Cavalries. They mostly have Yari Ashigarus, Bow Ashigarus, and/or 1-2 Light Cavalries (they're not even available until about 2-3 turns later, even that is only if you managed to win a territory that has it). I think this tutorial would've been much better if you would relate to the new people, because they're mostly the ones who would try their damndest to find tutorials like this.
