You know my workflow, Tone, Color, Artistic Effects, right? I preach it all the time and more often than not, I teach how to get better colors through your tonal work first, right? Well, recently, I discovered an incredible use for the Selective Color Adjustment Layer to get better tones.
Wait, hold the phone...
So Blake, now you are telling us we can get better colors through our tones and better tones through our colors? Uh, yeah, that's precisely what I am saying. Now to blow your mind one more time, you can use color to get better tones, so you can use tone to get better color so that you can get better color from your tonal colorwork...
Not only is that a tongue twister, but it is confusing as all get out! I promise this tutorial will be more straightforward than reading the last sentence of that last paragraph.
What I discovered recently is that you can use the Selective Color Adjustment Layer with a Luminosity Blend Mode to get a ton of control over the tones in your photo. The Luminosity Blend Mode only allows the selected layer to affect the underlying layers Luminance values. So when we use a Selective Color Adjustment Layer set to Luminosity, we get to control the tones in our colors without shifting the hue or saturation of the color.
Trust me, all of this will make more sense when I demonstrate it. These are some advanced concepts that I think you will find quite challenging to wrap your head around from one viewing.
Therefore, I STRESS that you experiment with it. It's simple:
1. Make a Selective Color Adjustment Layer
2. Select the LUMINOSITY Blend Mode
3. Select a prominent color in your photo.
4. Move the sliders to the right to get darker
5. Move the sliders left to get brighter
6. Repeat as necessary for each prominent color in your photo
That's it, pretty easy, huh? Let'start with the tutorial first; then, I give you permission to run off and experiment. - Навчання та стиль

I learned a lot here, and I’ve always been a fan of Selective colour.
Selective Colour intrigued me on my first day on Photoshop (about a decade ago). I asked a user what it is - they didn’t know.
I learned it through trial and error and I find it very useful - even for increasing or decreasing colours in selected patches.
Thanks Blake for expanding my appreciation of those sliders and modes.

I found this similiar result when we apply a BW adjustment layer, increasing blue, yello etc and change blend mode to luminosity

insightful and very useful. This tutorial also brought up another idea. One of the best protocols for producing powerful B&W images is to manipulate the HSL of colors under a Gradient Map (B to W) layer. Now I have to experiment with Selective Color under the Gradient Map layer.

Thank you Blake, great tutorial as always. I have used SC layers for a while but never with it as a tonal adjustment. Only thing I would liked to have seen is the result if you “took the governor off” and put it on absolute instead of relative. Thanks again for expanding my knowledge
No problem! My pleasure! I prefer the relative as it works with the color mixture rather than the Absolute value. It is a more natural approach. However, the Absolute value doesn't make too much of a difference sometimes, it really depends on the color, I find it a little more unpredictable.

What about using color blend mode for the second selective color layer, so just the colors are affected by that?

Cool stuff - this is kinda like "Perceptual Saturation" in NIK Color Efex.
Cool! I don't remember that one. Only used it a couple times.
The more I watch Blake’s stuff, the less I use Nik... so much better for my images IMO.

How to do it in portrait? Great video.
Same way for a landscape. Portraits have colors and tones too. So you'd use the same method but for your desired look.

Great video and I watched it at normal speed. Sometimes you speak so fast I dial down the playback speed to 0.75. Yes, I know you are trying to keep the videos short as possible and interesting, of which they are. Plus you are not the only videos I have used that trick on.

Anywhere really. You can use this before making masks if you want to get more from your tones or use it after for refinement.
As a subscriber, I searched you previous videos and noticed there was nothing about value grading - is this tone video the same - if so, how do they differ; how are they the same? Thanks so much Blake.
Can you explain "value grading" I'm not privy to that specific term.
The zone system of Ansel Adams. I know you've mentioned in some of your previous videos, but value grading has to do with comparing the lightest light with the darkest darks and not conder the croma (hue) but just the value (or what I'm interpetering as tones in your workflow. You mentioned some time ago you are also a painter (I am as well (watercolor)) so I sure you now "value" placement in your painting workflow. (The short verison Joe) Where, in your digital workflow, does value consideration fall as a consideration for editing your photos? Thanks so much Blake for indulging my curisioity. :o) @@f64Academy

I mean I'm always looking at the list light to the darkest dark, I'm manipulating them, exploiting them, and using them to my advantage to draw the viewers eye around the image. But it's also a very open ended question and image specific. Those things are always on my mind while I'm editing, but I think some of that is just second nature and it's just something that I do based on past experiments.

Do the 25, 25, 50 values change from sensor to sensor?
Not necessarily if it's a better matrix sensor. Most of them are built off that sensor technology or variations of it.
Do you know about editing in 16 bit rather than 8 bit to avoid colour banding appearing in your image. Then at the end convert it back to 8 bit. It's also a neat trick in photoshop not too many people know about.
I am usually editing in 16 bit on my RAW files after the handoff from ACR. When I do these demos, I do them on JPEGs for speed purposes, so they are in 8 Bit,
Hi Blake how come when i make a new adjustment layer the pictogram on the left of the mask is not the same than the one i see in your tutorial. For the selective color the pictogram is a O splitt in half black and white , if i choose Hue/saturation the pictogram is also a O half black and white, Actually any adjustement layer i chhose , the pictogram is alaways the same . It does not show the actual pictogram according to the action it should do . e.g. The Curve pictogram for new adjustement layer curve, an histogram for a new adjustment level curve etc. etc. Any adjustement layer i choose the pictogram is O splited half black half white.... I am using Ps CC 2020. Thank You
That's because you may have small layers selected. Go into the settings of the layers palette and select medium or large and you'll see the pictogram.
