snopes Bob Keeshan, later famous as television’s “Captain Kangaroo,” also enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but he did so too late to see any action during World War II. Keeshan was born on 27 June 1927 and enlisted two weeks before his 18th birthday, several months after the fighting at Iwo Jima. In a 1997 interview, Keeshan explained that he “enlisted in the U.S. Marines but saw no combat” because he signed up “just before we dropped the atom bomb.”
People have busy schedules in the real world. It can be hard to get schedules to line up sometimes. I often have this issue with making plans with friends where we both have free time, but not at the same time. When you get a job and are raising a family maybe you'll have some understanding.
That Lee Marvin story on Captain kangaroo blah blah blah blah blah is all urban legend it never happened and Lee Marvin never said it happened. Captain kangaroo himself graduated high school in 1945 and joined the Marine Corps but the war ended before he ever deployed.
That would be difficult to compile, which nations ? Who's war, 1939 /41 etc But the numbers are mindblowing really. As a rough guide. The UK had the largest merchant marine in 1939. about 200 k men 17.9 million tonnes. At outbreak they added about 1m tonnes allied ships Plus commonwealth ships 3 million tonnes =about 22million tonnes. As a guide the USA had the next biggest @8million tonnes. The battle of the Atlantic alone cost 13million tonnes and 30 k merchant seaman lives. Most of these loses were early on. The allies got really good at hunting U-boats from about 1943 on. HFDF,RADAR escort carriers long range aircraft better weapons and training, hunter killer groups and probably most important the US started producing ships really fast. But from 39-42 it was a real close run thing. As for making it from war outbreak to war's end, the Tribal destroyers for example( a fleet destroyer fairly typical for the time) 16 in class @outbreak 4@ war's end ( That from memory I could be wrong) but it illustrates the perils of the time.
I'm gonna be that guy, Bob Keeshan was not a Beachmaster as Mr. Hanks claims at 25:00. In his own words, Keeshan “enlisted in the U.S. Marines but saw no combat” because he signed up “just before we dropped the atom bomb.” Obviously that's not to take away from anything said about Beachmasters, Bob Keeshan just happened to not be one.

One historical novel i highly recommend is "For Crew and Country". It is about the crew and journey of the USS Samuel B Roberts. (Yes, that one. Essentially the contemporary to the "Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers".)
I had a great uncle who mentioned to me that he'd been in the merchant marine and had done the run to archangel and murmansk, I was a dumb kid and he passed before I would know enough to understand how hairy that was. Seeing TH bring the battle of the atlantic to life was great, highly recommend.

The government is the mafia that we give permission to rule us on our behalf. Obama and his "goons" were no better. Gangsters enriching their friends and donors; ramming through policy that not everyone agrees with. You're just butt hurt because *your guy* isn't the head gangster.
@@junkandcrapamen Yeah those peaceful mobs of Trump supporters burning down Minneapolis, tearing down statues of Washington, Lincoln, and Grant, setting up a Communist Commune and executing trespassers in Seattle, shooting into trucks at elderly men in Provo, shooting children in Atlanta because they traveled down the wrong road, etc., etc...
Yes, those mobs of peaceful Trump supporters doing all those things is just awful...
Dumb people talking smart about identity politics without realising they're all the same.
Stop being heroes and wake up, they're the same side hoping you'll dispute their relevance like you all are now.
2:12 I thought the same, "hey, they did a hardcore history addendum with Tom Hanks" 😅
Completely ignore whatever the hell I was watching, to watch this
Wife is in the middle of giving birth to our secons child, was notified there was a new Dan Carlin joint available. Immediately I leave . I should definitely go see it she's okay.
Yes beleive every word that isnt censored. And YT search his guest and a particularly popular island.
@@wishpunk9188 Clinton and Trump were both on record going there, everyone was. Enjoy history or go find something else to drool over
@@dcred123 you are correct on many accounts. Sad, but correct. I will continue spreading the word. Perhaps somebody gives a damn if children are mol ested.
@@oinkooink agreed. It's an open secret and due to censorship we can't even have a dialogue about. This guest is f . U ck .in g children. And because he makes some pretty damn good movies we give him a pass? When is enough.... enough?
If i am not mistaken wasnt there a whole podcast with dan about ww1 i am looking for it if anyone could help thank you so much

Bob Keeshan, later famous as television’s “Captain Kangaroo,” also enlisted in the U.S.
I can't believe tom hanks repeated that rumor
Amazing show as always
such a casual interview and a casual title.
*sigh*
Alright! You sold me. I thought i wasn't in the mood for another WWII movie....but apparently i am
Saw it this weekend, its a good straightforward movie. I would recommend a good sound system if you can for the wolfpack theme/soundeffect they do.
Great as always, Dan 🙂
So Happy I am subscribed here as well as on the podcast App, Saw it here first which is interesting :)
Dan is a podcaster, Tom is an actor, wtf do they have to do that they can only do a hard hour.
You may not want to know the answer. Yt search this guest and a certain P island EDO.
People have busy schedules in the real world. It can be hard to get schedules to line up sometimes. I often have this issue with making plans with friends where we both have free time, but not at the same time. When you get a job and are raising a family maybe you'll have some understanding.
Hey Tom, explain Chet please
Delightful interview.
That Lee Marvin story on Captain kangaroo blah blah blah blah blah is all urban legend it never happened and Lee Marvin never said it happened. Captain kangaroo himself graduated high school in 1945 and joined the Marine Corps but the war ended before he ever deployed.
Just about to comment on this, I just looked it up. Kind of a disappointment.
Nice to see Lt. Dan talk to Forrest again after all these years
Dan where can I get the Blueprint For Armageddon podcast! I can’t find it I need to listen again!
Im newbie , where can i found old podcasts?
What a great interview of a fabulous human being.
I love how Tom uses ww2 era microphone for this :)
Great interview.
Wait what happened to the prophets of doom episode I wanted to rewatch it
How many ships (that were already around when the war kicked off) survived to see its end?
That would be difficult to compile, which nations ? Who's war, 1939 /41 etc
But the numbers are mindblowing really.
As a rough guide.
The UK had the largest merchant marine in 1939.
about 200 k men
17.9 million tonnes.
At outbreak they added about 1m tonnes allied ships
Plus commonwealth ships
3 million tonnes
=about 22million tonnes.
As for making it from war outbreak to war's end, the Tribal destroyers for example( a fleet destroyer fairly typical for the time)
16 in class @outbreak
4@ war's end
( That from memory I could be wrong) but it illustrates the perils of the time.
@@garyhewitt489 great answer. Cheers!
Incredible how did I miss this
Dan! a King of Kings like segment about the MONGOLS would be insane
He did Wrath of the khans a few years back
I'm gonna be that guy, Bob Keeshan was not a Beachmaster as Mr. Hanks claims at 25:00. In his own words, Keeshan “enlisted in the U.S. Marines but saw no combat” because he signed up “just before we dropped the atom bomb.”
Obviously that's not to take away from anything said about Beachmasters, Bob Keeshan just happened to not be one.
Beat me to it.
I wish Hanks and Spielberg would do a mini series about Vietnam as per Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
I was literally just thinking "fuck it would be nice to get a new HH episode" lol
Coffee is from Ethiopia Mr Hanks
But the fact that you listen Hardcore history wins me over
I think he was saying they were patronizing american produced products in that particular discussion between the politician and the pirate lord
@@Jmansmash1 that would make alot more sence that what i assumed he ment lol
I love this channel
I thought surely it was a different tom hanks 😅 this podcast has grown so much!
Okay, where do I go to see the Pirated Version since I don't have AppleTV? Great interview! I can totally see you and him around a campfire on a beach just 'chit chatting' about 'stuff'! Please, when that happens, sneak a recording!!!!
The answer is in your question
This was a very nice surprise today!
Fantastic show Dan..!!!
Wonderful Addendum Mr. Carlin. It's nice to hear a top talent like today's give you much deserved praise. I hope it finds you well.
Hey. I was listening to your 5 part podcast on WWI. Now it seems to not be here. Is there a reason for that?
One historical novel i highly recommend is "For Crew and Country". It is about the crew and journey of the USS Samuel B Roberts. (Yes, that one. Essentially the contemporary to the "Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers".)
What did Hanks do on Epsteins Island?
Or was that a long time ago and therefore irrelevant?
Nick Wilkie Bravo.
Please don't give these urban legends any more fuel, it's literally pumped by Hollywood as a desperate last hurrah as it falls into irrelevance.
every time I put up a comment in the main thread calling Hanks a suspected pedophile on maxwell's list, it gets deleted
@@RR-fg7nu The pilot kept an incredible logbook.
@@thepondering63 same
8:09, that "Dan" totally sounded like "Lieutenant Dan"
I had a great uncle who mentioned to me that he'd been in the merchant marine and had done the run to archangel and murmansk, I was a dumb kid and he passed before I would know enough to understand how hairy that was. Seeing TH bring the battle of the atlantic to life was great, highly recommend.
