The podcast that got me into military history
Yoooo sup Cappy!
What a pleasant surprise!
I feel like I always check if Dan has posted something after months and months of missing him and he’s always posted like 2 days before and thank u Dan thank u
Every day I wake up and think to myself, "is this the day that Dan begins his epic multi-part series on the Crusades?"
Would be nice but it's too late to do that without getting cancelled somehow
The Crusades are by far my favourite era in history so hearing Dan talk about them for 20 hours would be mindblowingly amazing! Unfortunately, I think he explicitly said he would never cover that topic because of the modern political conotations. If I remember correctly, Dan was constantly being pushed by white supremacits on ye olde Hardcore History forum to do a Crusades series and he did not want to support that. As sad as that makes me, I totally understand him. Well, at least we have that Alexander epic to look forward to XD
Good god
Damn Mando…. What a FUCKIN’ AMAZING IDEA!!
Man, what a great idea, now I cannot unhear that.
I teach history at high school - cannot think of a more perfect way to introduce the Eastern Front conflict than the first 10-20 mins of the first episode of Ghost of the Ostfront. This man is amazing in hooking you in and educating you in a way I can probably never do... Dan has seriously changed the face of understanding history IMO
I had relatives in the 24th Panzer div, Ghosts of the Ostfront sent chills down my spine.
I never knew much or cared for the matter of the Eastern Front until I listened to Ghosts of the Osfront. Dan Carlin's storytelling is masterful.
Hey Dan! I just want to add--
My daughter went to high school in Osaka about ten years ago. Obviously all her classes were in Japanese. And the history classes, too.
She was stunned to learn how little her classmates knew about WWII. They actually didn't know who Hitler was. His name was never mentioned in any history class. He wasn't in the books. He wasn't brought up by any teachers. Ever.
Anyway, that thought came to mind when you were talking about understanding the differences between a modern Western mindset and others. I'm about your age, I think, and I can't imagine how it's possible to understand WWII without being told about Hitler and other certain things.
They have to teach how Japan had a real shot at winning the Pacific war then [e.i. without Germany]. I wonder if you can share your daughter's experience a bit more.
That's because WWII was not as much about Mr. H. As our overlords here in the West want you to think.
It was about global-scale human sacrifice and mass mind control.
Thanks for the upload Dan! This series was riveting and haunting.
I've always wondered why the aussies today are more chummy with the Chinese than Koreans or Japanese.
Certainly explained that
Oh YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS DAN HAS RETURNED!!!!!!! I can't tell you how happy I was to see this pop up on my feed
What an amazing discussion. Thank you so much!!!
Groaning about supernova after 27 hours... lightweights.
Totally. I listened to WWI and I couldn't get enough.
Dear Dan
Just scrolling through the comments in fear that I'm the weird one missing HCH. I'm not, we are all starved to within an inch of our lives. Everybody has been looking out for something from you and as always, it was worth it.

I like the way you put that, audio art indeed.
This is just the first of like 100 times I will listen to this.
a bit spread out thin, and haphazardly uploaded, but still not complaining.
Always crack my phone screen pressing the notification for Hardcore History.
I finished the HH Supernova in the East. I’ll wind up listening again. I’m certainly very happy to get even more info on the subject. Dan made it so interesting, I want to know more. I feel like that every time I finish a HH series. Feel kind of bummed out there’s no more, lol.
I LOVE THIS MAN! New release = Xmas morning
Had insomnia for the past 4 hours.... It has now all been worth it. THANK YOU DAN!
ADDENDUM BITTTCCHHHES! And we’re not ready for something new - LOVE THIS TOPIC!! So stoked we get another episode!! Thank you Dan…. Been up for 28 hours…. Driving home now…. Last leg of the journey and you literally saved my life by keeping me awake!
Dan is top shelf.
Thank you Dan and Ian! Looking forward to more content.
Love your analysis and storytelling. My father was a doctors aid on a hospital ship in the Pacific from 1943 to the end of war. His ship picked up the wounded soldiers from the field hospitals and until the day he died in 1995 He hated the Japanese and would never buy anything they made. The Japanese culture has a long disdain for anyone who isn't Japanese. It's tribalism to the max. Mankind needs to better understand that lack of compassion for outsiders as well as the absurd hubris they had in WWII.. They have mellowed now but they still cared little for whales, or southeast asian ecologys, nor do they allow immigrants. In 1975 I had Japanese dye sales, one of which was a 25 year old kid who was convinced the Japanese economy would overtake the US soon. At the same time as this national hubris they have had a rigid heirarchy in their class structure that demands the masses sacrifice all for their leaders yet never dream of advancement. It sapped their initiative and was the big weakness of their armies. Kill the officers and the rest do nothing but follow the last order. This deference to authority goes way back to before 1850 when a peasant could be beheaded for not bowing deep enough to a superior. Their belief structure doen't come from Zen which I've studied so I suspect it must in part come from the shinto religion and ancestor worship where the continuing status of their dead ancestors depends on living kids behavior. I'm guessing but more study on why the Japanese behaved as they did in WWII would make a great addendum to Super Nova.To this day the current leadership avoids and deflects criticism of Nanking, korean and se asia worker treatment, POW's and chemical and biological warfare against the Chinese.. It's more than just the dogs of war; It's a lack of concern and compassion for non Japanese humanity and envirnments. Why?
Pride.
in a way the japanese society is still very xenophobic, racist, n misogynist. u will experience it more as a non japanese asian than a white foreigner. we just give them a pass due to its strategic importance in the cold war and now the current conflict with china.
why is it like this? i think its how their society has developed in the millennia of warfare. just look at their brutality in the imjin war against the koreans. and instead of applying some modern humanist values to it following the meiji modernisation they simply embrace that part of the medieval brutality into modern warfare. the west in turn started enacting some form of rules and the hague, geneva convention etc. while the japanese just didn't bother.
i will say a close study on how the japanese became a modern imperialists power in the late 1800s might answer your question.
Calm down, the United States do not care any more for the ecology of international water, immigrants or the planet at large. To suggest the Japanese today stand out in this regard is just incorrect.
I was desperately searching for Blueprint For Armageddon once again... but found this posted just now! Wow!
A 1h+ addendum? This will be a great day!
Glad to see more mainstream representations of Ians
The series was an eye opener. But it feels like Christmas may come early if you are dropping another soon. Which would be awesome.
Your back!!
Another GREAT podcast Dan, keep up the awesome work! Can I make a request for a podcast on the Samurai & the Sengoku Jidai?

Hell yeah my dude
Always great stuff Dan.Good job
could you do an episode about the napoleonic era?
like what was the life of napoleonic soldiers off and on the battelfield like?
love your Podcasts ❤️❤️❤️
Yes!!!
My father, who immigrated to the US from Taiwan in the 1950's, once had a Japanese post doctoral scientist working in his US laboratory during the 90's. One night the Japanese scientist watched a TV documentary about the atrocities committed by the Japanese military during their WW2 occupation of China which horrified him. The man was apparently taught very little about Japan's role in WW2 in any of his history classes. The next day he came into the lab and sincerely apologized to my dad for what Japan had done to the Chinese during the war. I don't think much has changed in recent years in the way history is taught in Japan's schools.
Yet again another great post. Your the man dude cant wait for the next post.
Am I the only one who, the day that 6 months has passed since the last hardcore history, starts to check for the new one 5 times a day?

I would suggest reading the book Retribution. Japan reaped what it sowed.
Wow
My father, a veteran of the Pacific Theater, said the post-occupation Japanese were deferential and even cordial, in comparison to the indigenous Hawaiians, who seemed to hold the mainlanders in contempt.
Japan lost a war that they started, the Hawaiians were colonized. Big difference there, not surprised that they'd be indignant about it.
From everything I've been told, Japan fully expected to have done to them what they did to Korea so when we didn't turn Japan into basically a forced labor camp for the men and one giant brothel for the women, they were unsurprisingly pretty thankful.
@@MrTaxiRob those who cannot defend their land against colonization deserve to lose it. The Law of Power does not cease simply because you wish it to weakling.
@@SeruraRenge11 True. And that shows that the Japanese really are the superior ethnic group in the East. Unlike almost all others, they actually have the capacity for gratitude!
@@StarboyXL9 you're advocating genocide. Go to Hell.
I love you dan! ( but like not in a weird way)
Please please do a Viking series Dan I think could be as big as Genghis khan series
My god the khan series is something else. Same exact content isn't as pleasing to listen to by anyone else for me though, shocking to say but as much as I like how he tells a story it's just as important that his voice doesnt pain me over time
More Dan, More History!! Thank you!
This was the pick me up I needed this week! Early birthday present
I just got notified this was out and it made my tomorrow.
I saw I had a youtube notification, which seemed odd because I thought I had those turned off. Then I saw it's a Dan Carlin upload and my day instantly got better.
Can you do a show with Curtis Yarvin?
I equally love the lengthy series as much as the addendums 🤌
Gonna need that 5 hour episode of you repeating what you have already said real soon. I am shaking. I need this
Thank you Dan!! Happy to wait for these little tid bits. Keep it comming from a devotee! More than worth the 1$ ask!!
