Dan you uploading is like Xmas, thank you for inspiring as all, if it wasnt for you I would have never taken the leap and began my history degree! When I have kids one day in the future, I hope to sit down and share your podcasts with them. Thank you for your hard work and every minute you put in is apprecaited.
Just finished the supernova series. Most profound experience I’ve ever gotten through media. As if watching the most incredible Hollywood film, except it all happened. Thank you for your work.
Mr. Carlin has made the study of history by the average, non-academic American acceptable in the ever expanding media markets made possible by the internet. Not only a great storyteller, but a pioneer! Thank you Mr. Carlin!
The stories my father tells me from Iran are crazy. He fled back in the 70s when the Sha was being thrown out. He was in the Iranian army and fought in Oman back in the 60s. The things I have told my buddies brought them to send me this video. They thought I was full of it until you helped confirm the stories my father shared. Last time I went was 2005. Beautiful place.
Ghazvini book is one of the best books I ever read on Iran. I have read many, but his book shows the hope and despair of the Iran/US relationship over the years. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what is happening today in the context of history between these two nations who share so many similarities yet are so perplexed by one another. 🇮🇷🇺🇸
WOW! Only one month between EP's this is great. I can now watch the other EP I've been dying to watch. Then wait another month to watch this! Your content is too good and rewatchable that making the first time seeing something is always worth the wait
Nice show. The 'friendly Iran' mentioned at the start was after the US and Brits helped overthrow democracy: 'The 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état (Persian: کودتای ۲۸ مرداد), was the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favour of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 19 August 1953.'' While not many Americans remember the friendly Shah for Iranians it is not so easily forgotten. '

As much as I love a new Carlin episode, still waiting for his next big mega series. A new mini episode coming just means I’ll have to wait 3-6months for whatever he comes out w next. Still great full though
We've had a fairly consistent upload schedule though since the last supernova episode. One a month. Keep in mind the entire time the team has been working on another series and these addendum episodes are just interesting interviews to tide us over and keep us listening. I can empathize a little though, I always get the slightest bit of disappointment when I see a new Dan Carlin upload and it's an addendum episode. Mind you, once I start listening it's always great. But nothing is ever as good as the series. Fingers crossed we get something big soon. Does anyone know what Dan is working on?
Dan, I'd love to to talk to scott horton about his book "enough already, time to end the war on terrorism" it goes through the wars/interventions from 1979-today.
Which one? 😉 Pre 1953 or pre 1979? Just imagine the shoe on the other foot. Imagine if a foreign power would, in a coup, made Bush/Clinton/Trump a permanent president and abolished the congress... would it be so far fetched that "we the people" would have joined forces under a conservative Christian umbrella to oppose the foreign backed dictator?
@@nahiag 1979, and I agree. Hindsight has 20/20 vision. The average person thought that modernization was beneficial to the world. Theology should have A place in leadership, but it should not have THE only place in leadership.
@@Run.Ran.Run1 the shameful results of American democracy are the religious zealots who put their religion in place of objective reality. It's their right to exercise their religion, it's not their right to push their religion's morality onto everyone else.
Not only do people not recall a pre revolution Iran, but they do not remember that a significant part of the revolution were educated ultra liberal left secularist elements who did not want religious fundamentalism, but just a secular democracy free from US hypercapitalist interests - similar to many elements of the Arab Spring. Including many women and feminists. Unfortunately the majority of the anti-Shah were religious fundamentalists who used the progressives, then turned on them and killed and/or tortured them for years, and made them second class citizens. It's part of why many were very suspicious and not idealistic about the Arab Spring at the time.
Great conversation. One thing i would say, that i remember hearing tales of the brutality of Savak back in the early 1970's. In the years just before the revolution a few cinemas (with multiple casualties) were burned down by religious extremists so it felt like something was happening.
The stories were mostly made up by revolutionaries either communists or religious Islamist. They wanted to agitate people against the king (and had help from BBC in spreading the rumors and lies ) untill they succeeded finally
@@poorang900 No the news clips i read were in my local paper and they were not political, just reporting on the tragedies. In the same way they would report on say a factory fire in a garment factory in Bangla Desh.I did read a novel Caravans by John Michiner in the early 1970's where he thought Afghanistan would certainly end up in the orbit of either Russia or the United States, and the outcome would not be good.I suppose they should have learned from the British defeats way back in the day !

Right, so the Islamic fundamentalists pulled millions out of poverty according to this account. They definitely didn't ruin the Iranian economy while lining their own pockets and impoverishing millions of decent Persian people.
Think of how large the population is to begin with, and you’re telling me you want have a couple of million people who have lived a successful life and praise their government for it. Same within the US, it’s the 1/10 of 1% who are successful to a point where they do their America’s own marketing campaign via social media, meanwhile, tens of millions of Americans are living literally on the edge of poverty. Tens of millions which is comparable in size of whole countries in Eastern Europe.
