Crazy you brought up Jaws. Spielberg said that he originally was going to make a Jaws 2 himself as a prequel and it was as he described it "Saving private Ryan with sharks" centered around the indianapolis. The studio wouldn't let him do that so they parted ways. Imagine the movie we lost there.
My Grandfather Daniel San Miguel Alaniz landed at Omaha Beach on D day +1 as an infantry scout with the 2nd I.D. !! "Hot as Hell" is how he described it!!! Wounded by an 88mm mortar barrage outside the city of St. lo. His Commanding officer was killed 3 days later... He had one green eye and one blue eye. I remember the look in those eyes when he spoke of it. Changed his mind on his death bed about being cremated. He said he wanted to be buried at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas with " my buddies that didn't make it home!!" 😢 Man I miss him.
Having been on a boat in the ocean on the edge of a storm, I'll say it's terrifying. I can't imagine being on a sinking burning ship in the middle of the night. The fact anybody survived it is astounding.

Robert Shaw was dead drunk when he filmed that Indianapolis scene, and he did it in 1 take. Just genius. He had that character completely down.... I was 15 when Jaws came out, and my granddad took my little brother and me to see it. I remember the Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons song "Who Loves You" was playing in the theater before the movie. Whenever I hear that song, it takes me back to that day.
Actually, he did a take dead drunk and it was horrible. Spielberg gave him permission to drink and Shaw embarrassed himself. He came back the next day dead sober and did the monologue in the movie.
Great story Dan! However , it literally brought me to tears for two reasons. My Dad ,who is deceased now, was 18 y.o on a Destroyer and was there when this happened; he told me this story many times growing up ; and I simply wept for the suffering of those men.

Not many people know that the Indianapolis speech in Jaws was written by Robert Shaw himself. He was a fine playwright (The Man In the Glass Booth) as well as an actor. He died tragically early of cancer.
I had a comment (which has disappeared from my feed somehow) that was very positive the Jaws speech was written by John Milius. From the Wiki: "The question of who deserves the most credit for writing Quint's monologue about the Indianapolis has caused substantial controversy. Spielberg described it as a collaboration between Sackler, Milius, and actor Robert Shaw, who was also a playwright.[20] According to the director, Milius turned Sackler's "three-quarters of a page" speech into a monologue, and that was then rewritten by Shaw.[24] [Primary screenwriter Carl] Gottlieb gives primary credit to Shaw, downplaying Milius's contribution.[25][26]" Before anyone gets snippity about "oh, Wikipedia", the sources include Lester Friedman's Steven Spielberg: Interviews, Gottlieb's The Jaws Log, and Jankiewicz, Patrick (2009). Just When You Thought It Was Safe: A Jaws Companion. Check it out: books.google.ca/books?id=eqY-DwAAQBAJ&q=+Indianapolis&redir_esc=y#v=snippet&q=Indianapolis&f=false For what it's worth, I've also read it in articles about Shaw and his biography; he was also known to help rewrite lines in other films he appeared in. Milius made the claim well after Shaw's death, which was fortunate for Milius.
Its been 5 years since this video has been posted, and also your first that I have ever watched (got recommended to your channel by a work friend). As I sit here listening to your descriptions of events that I would frankly not at all enjoy being in (and I thank God above for the sacrifice of our soldiers so I don't have to) I can't help but think of something. I have enjoyed the Chernobyl series that came out on Netflix back a few years ago and I think it would be a fantastic opportunity if the director of that series, who put that much effort into the telling of the worst nuclear disaster in history thus far, should be well suited to make an equal or even greater telling of this story. Thoughts?
Sending Christmas cards to the Captain years later was just cold and cruel no matter how much grief one has for the loss of a loved one. Blame war, hell even blame the Japanese who shot the torpedo (even blaming them for following orders isn’t gonna help anyone) but the Captain who did his best.... That’s just cruel and his death is the outcome they obviously wanted it just took 20 years. Sad.

I spent ten years in the Navy. Just got out in may. I was on a sub so if we got torpedoed, I wouldn’t have much time to feel how these guys were, but sharks are my biggest fear and knowing about the Indianapolis and what these guys went through, I agree it has to be the worst place in history to be

Two movie adaptations. Mission Of The Shark (with Stacy Keach as captain McVeigh) and USS Indianapolis, Men Of Courage (with Nicholas Cage as McVeigh).
There is only one survivor left from this incident. His name is Harold Bray, Sr. He lives in Benicia, California. Here, in the final moments of his life, his son, Harold Bray, Jr, died in a motorcycle accident in June. I cannot imagine the strength he has within him. Is he the luckiest, or unluckiest man in the world? I cannot say.

True Hollywood Renegade Genius
I forgot that one of THE SCENE with speech that he wrote was in DIRTY HARRY. "Do you feel lucky punk" scene describing the .357 is epic.
I spent ten years in the Navy. Just got out in may. I was on a sub so if we got torpedoed, I wouldn’t have much time to feel how these guys were, but sharks are my biggest fear and knowing about the Indianapolis and what these guys went through, I agree it has to be the worst place in history to be
That was brutal, dude
I've just listened to this episode this morning and I heard the name Tunisia. I am Tunisian, I have no idea what you mean. Could someone please explain?
The book jaws is pretty dark and deep. The film on the other hand used to be my feel good film as a kid. I always watched it when I needed comfort. What a weird kid I was.
Carlin mentions a book title- something like "if the worst should occur"
Anyone have the correct title/author for the book available?
Great story dan!
You ever think of doing a short show about the sms emden?
Yay! Thanks for that!
I don't fear much. But deep dark water and sharks scare the bejesus out of me. Thanks I think. Great show...
Great work
Two movie adaptations.
I can't wait for the multi part Shackleton show. When is that coming out btw? ;)
Oh, that would be so great!
