For anyone in the comments considering climbing, I've been climbing for a while, and even though I hardly ever get to practice, I can say this: attitude plays a HUGE part in Rock climbing. If you are pessimistic towards it, you will give up and leave the wall undone. If you have a positive attitude, like I try to, you just keep going until you've gotten to the top of the wall. It's very important I have a positive attitude in climbing, because in bouldering especially, (climbing without a rope) it could quite literally save your life.
+hexlollipop its keeping a low body weight and using body position to maximize the angle of the hand holds combined with stamina to stay up there and yes, they do have a powerful grip, but an average man has a strong grip -- for about 4 seconds -- those kind of climbers can hang up there all day long
As a climber I gotta say that an average man does not have a strong grip in relation to climbers. Any average man (or woman) who doesn't believe me, just go to a bouldering gym and try climbing a bit. Maybe go find some hangboards and check out the smallest edges, then realize there are people using those for training with extra weight added. Pretty much everyone who doesn't climb could not hold on to many of the holds she's using for even one second. I've climbed for two years now and when I touch routes way above my grade it still seems completely ridiculous to even hold on to some of the holds. It requires strength way above mine and I'm pretty damn strong compared to the average joe.
Well done, Sasha! Climbing chicks rule! Ladies... take note! This is a great sport for men and women to share... because women have a distinct advantage (except for the most insane climbs... but that is really about the top .001% of the world... it's a different kind of insane where literally *everything* determines success or failure... maximum reach, maximum strength in every part of the body, maximum technique, maximum flexibility, maximum endurance). Women have the advantage of NOT having the same upper body strength that men naturally tend to have... and this forces women to focus on technique right from the start... and technique *is* climbing. Women tend to be more flexible... and this is also a really big deal. You'll climb better, with more endurance than the guys! I learned almost everything I know about climbing from the women I climbed with. So go for it! NOT a man's sport! Men tend to get humble around climbing chicks, at least the ones with sense do... (plus they enjoy the view, so it's a win-win :)
Ascent labeling is a little off. It was first a team free ascent, and second it was a second ascent. Be a second ascent carries much more weight than first female ascent. Proud send.
Wow!!! So inspiring! I only recently started climbing and I'm a freshman in high school. So far the best I can do is 5.9's on an 80 foot wall with auto-belay, so this is incredible to see. Definetly a goal of mine to be this good someday!!
how do they drill those holes to attach the harness ? the way the fall sure gives me the goosebumps, can it take the weight of the free fall? especially with that jerky action.
The climbing gear he's using to ascend the rope is called "jumars" ,one for each hand, and a bunch of other stuff that's connected to his harness. Jumars pinch the rope and have tiny teeth that dig into it.
MrBorstli lol no. i once jumped of height of 25 metters on water. and i learned my lesson my foot hurtled much like if someone hitted it with a wood stick.
Baraa Solieman okay i unterstand that you have bad experience with height. But that doesnt mean that u have to say every climber has a deathwish. You can seriously hurt yourself in alot of different sports if u dont know how to do them proper. So please move on and dont bother to comment so negative about such great athletes!
WTF what planet are you on many many women have climbed with men you are so out of touch with reality its laughable !!,, you should no what your talking about before you post which is obvious your totally clueless !!.. Cheers!!..
Coggo90 yeah I get that. I just am not a big fan of energy drinks. Even though I used to drink like at least one monster a day. Now I just get a whiff of them and want to leave the room. They are bad. And I'm not trying to dog on her skills, she is still an incredible climber.
eric g Why would drinking red bull make you lose respect for her as a climber? She's still the same climber with the same achievements whether or not she drinks red bull.
because i think redbull is a bad product and those energy drinks have been proven to be bad for your heart. It's sad to see such a talented athlete drinking something that is bad for your health. As Coggo90 already said, she probably has that because it's a requirement the redbull makes her do in order to stay sponsored. At the end of the day, yeah she is making money from that but i think she kind of sold out to redbull. All in all, that is just my opinion.
eric g What I meant to say was that while promoting red bull might make you lose respect for her as a _person_, for the choice she made, it shouldn't make you lose respect for her as a _climber_, which is what you said, as it doesn't diminish her accomplishments in any way. It's not like if she was found to be using steroids, which would change the way we saw her achievements. But I get what you mean, and personally I also dislike red bull and would never drink it, but I'm not really bothered about their sponsorship in this sport (and similar outdoor/extreme/lifestyle sports they promote). I credit the public audience with enough intelligence to make their own decisions about whether or not they want to drink a crappy energy drink like that, and obviously their marketing doesn't work on you or I, or on most people I know. I think the main impact of their advertising is to encourage people who want energy drinks to buy _their_ energy drink (rather than a competitor's), as opposed to persuading people who don't want energy drinks to start drinking them. Even though I don't like their product, I think it's a benefit to the sport to have sponsors like red bull who are willing to pay the considerable costs to make a film like this (travel, accommodation, film crew) and to support the top athletes.

Love the screams at the end. Pure joy! Your dad must of been an amazing teacher and father
Absolute great videography. Props to the climbers!
I love watching this stuff...probably the most interesting and extreme sport there is, in my opinion. I wish I had the balls to do it.
I want to climb every where she and all the other professional climbers have gone AND MORE! It's so inspiring!!!!! Thanks Sash! =)
Jesus, the grip strength of the these people must be phenomenal
