  • Hi everyone!! If you've had the chance to visit HAWAI'I, then you've probably heard of a MUSUBI. If you haven't, a MUSUBI is composed of packed white rice topped with a protein and wrapped around with seaweed/nori. The most popular type of MUSUBI in HAWAI'I is the SPAM MUSUBI. In HAWAI'I, the unique Hawaiian version of the dish is a result of the military troops’ relocation to HAWAI'I following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. SPAM was a main ration given to the troops thanks to its high-calorie content and long shelf life. Instead of eating it plain, the SPAM was placed on top of rice in an onigiri fashion (Japanese traditional rice ball). There are SO MANY PLACES that serve SPAM MUSUBI in HAWAI'I across ALL of the islands. Each place has their own twist/recipe on how they make their MUSUBI and what FLAVORS or other proteins they offer such as Portuguese Sausage, Chicken Katsu, Mochiko Chicken and on and on. We hope our MUSUBI FOOD TOUR introduces just SOME of the great LOCAL SPOTS in HAWAI'I that are making some AMAZING MUSUBIS!! Check out our video to see the 7 spots across HAWAI'I we visited and go on your own MUSUBI FOOD TOUR adventure and don't forget to soak in all the BEAUTIFUL SCENARY that HAWAI'I and it's Aina have to offer as well!

    Now you gotta try to make your own. My wife makes a good Spam musubi. She does the full wrap of the rice with nori. Helps it stay in place and not make a mess.

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel
      @michellejosefoodandtravel  5 місяців тому

      Hi Chris!! Living on the mainland we definitely had to learn to make our own. What is your wife's recipe? We use Aloha shoyu, sugar, and oyster sauce for the glaze. We agree its so much easier to eat with less mess when the nori is wrapped completely around. We cut our nori sheets in half so it fits perfectly around.

    Aloha Michelle & Jose! Thanks for showing us all the musubi spots, especially around the other islands. I like when the Spam is between the rice. Reminds me of when I was a kid and you had them for a field trip lunch. I like 7-11 musubis. They're pretty tasty for a convenience store. Mana is more famous for their Japanese offerings. I like the mentaiko and salmon ongiris there! Have a great week!

      Aloha Misty! It was fun to find the other spots on Maui and Kaua'i. We just wished we had a chance to find a local spot on Big Island to have included it on the tour and in our bellies of course!! We think as long as the Spam to rice ratio is even...wherever they put the Spam works for us!! 😂7-Eleven is such an easy go to spot for them. We'd definitely pick them over the ABC Store ones when in town. We were lucky enough to try the salmon onigiri and the tuna-mayo and they were very good. We missed out on trying their ground beef sukiyaki one as they had sold out already. Have you tried that one or their shitake chicken pilaf musubi? Just looking for any excuse to go back of course!! Mahalo as always Misty for your support and have a great week too!!

    In Hawaii you can buy musubi molds and spam slicers at the stores (Walmart, Don Quijote, longs etc) and make all the musubi you want back home. The basic recipe is actually simple. My nieces in the mainland (San Fran) makes a ton of it and shares with their gymnastic teammates. The spam is lightly fried and cooked in a shoyu sugar and oyster sauce mixture till sauce thickens and turns into a glaze before it’s molded.

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel
      @michellejosefoodandtravel  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Norman! We actually have two musubi molds (thanks to Amazon) but we don't have the slicers. Have debated about getting them bc enjoy controlling the thickness of the slices!! 😂 We make it every couple of months. The recipe you shared is exactly how we make ours. Simple and good for sure. We specifically use Aloha Shoyu as well. It just tastes better with it. From time to time we also make a thin sheet of scrambled eggs in a sheet pan and cook it in the oven. We use the mold to cut exact pieces to fit the musubi. So so good too!! Thank you so much for taking a moment to check out our video and share your recipe/experiences!

      @@michellejosefoodandtravel- musubi with the egg is da bomb! Have you guys tried MUSUBI CAFE IYASUMEI? They have seven stores all in Waikiki. Everyone tells me it’s next level musubis and a must try.

      @michellejosefoodandtravel  5 місяців тому +1

      @@normanbaron8408 adding the egg that has a slight hint of sweetness is definitely da bomb!! Yes we have tried MUSUBI CAFE IYASUME. Its's good too and has a great variety of other musubi's to pick from as well as bentos and other dishes. Our only thing is that we just wish the rice to protein ratio was just a little more balanced. The rice is sometimes a bit more than the protein. Overall still a must try for sure to see how your tastebuds enjoy it and the number of locations in Honolulu/Waikiki, it makes it really convenient to visit!!

    Michelle's got the correct pronunciation of "musubi" most of the time, but Jose needs to practice a little more not to say "muSUbi" and give away that you're not from Hawai'i. Mahalo for trying out the SPAM musubi in different places, even on Maui and Kaua'i!

      @JodyY808 Hey Jody , I find your comments condescending. First of all Michelle and Jose are not from Hawaii and do not pretend to be.
      Secondly , who made you the pronunciation police , it’s just so annoying. Both Michelle and Jose do a great job of saying the Hawaiian words. But being picky is not on. Think about your line of questioning before posting without the condescending tone.
      Hope you do better in the future.

    When we had our first Musubi the day we arrived back in 2023 , we were surprised about the Musubi being warm , we were expecting it to be cold. Our hotel had the Musubi Cafe Iyasume in the building , very convenient for our first taste 😋
