Aloha Dennis! It was a great experience to learn more about Hawaii's fishing industry, its history, and how it has progressed through the years. We still can't get over the sizes of some of the fish that are caught on a regular basis. Mahalo as always for your support!!

Hi Marisela! Thank yo so much for your support. We hope you and your husband enjoy the tour as much as we did. It definitely provides a lot of background/history to Hawaii's fishing industry and it's amazing to see the size of some of the fish in person.

Fish Auction, who would have thought they have Tours ! This is very interesting and about the 50 mile rule. The recreational fishermen get a chance to catch a Tuna🤞 Nice Work
    Cheers Rod and Gem 🤙

Hi Rod and Gem!! We had no idea about the ability to tour the auction until one of our subscribers mentioned it to us on a previous video awhile back. It was definitely interesting to learn so much in such a short time about Hawaii's fishing industry and how it's progressed through the years. Being able to see the auction up close and see how fast they bid on the fish was amazing not to mention seeing the actual size of some of the fish that are on the auction floor!! Yes it's nice that there are rules and regulations out there to help support the local and smaller fishermen. Maybe something you can add to a future trip back to Hawai'i!!

Mahalo for doing this video. I regularly watch RAH, formerly known as Reel Adventures Hawaii. Nick, of RAH, catches the fish and later takes it to the auction, but I had never seen the process.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was another fish auction in Hawaii. I think the Suisan fish auction, on the Big Island, is still around.
Mahalo again for showing the process. It was very interesting!

Aloha Marvin! We had fun doing this video as we really wanted to know how Hawai’i has some of the freshest fish! We definitely learned a lot about the long line fishing industry and about all the regulations in place for fishing in Hawai’i.
Based on the information we got from our tour guide, Honolulu is the only fish auction left between Tokyo and Maine. Suisan Fish Market on Big Island is on our list of spots to visit in Hilo. From our understanding they get their fish through the local fisherman which is what they refer to as “trollers” on our tour as they usually fish 50 miles off the coast of Hawai’i.
A fun experience to check out for sure. We’re happy you enjoyed the video as much as we did filming it!! Mahalo nui for your support!!

Awesome segment Michelle & Jose. Such an interesting thing to see, and like Jose said, I never even thought about the whole process prior to putting that poke in my mouth. 🤣🤣🤤 Mahalo for filming the fish auction and waking up so early.

Hi Misty!! This was a really unique, interesting, and informative experience. There’s so much hard work that goes into bringing in that fresh poke, sushi, sashimi, and other fish dishes we love so much. It was a little struggle getting up that morning as we had stuffed our faces the night before at “What the Truck”!! 🤣😂😅

Hahaha! THIS was the video was waiting for!-LOL...Did you guys stop at Nico's Deli, right outside the door from the restaurant?! They serve KILLAH poke bowls & have, at least, dozen varieties of straight poke! Lucky we live 808....A-L-O-H-A from Hawaii!

Aloha Harry! We hope you enjoy the video. It was a little hard to film as we didn’t know much about the setting before walking in. We did not get a chance to go to Nico’s as we had plans to film another spot afterwards. Still on our never ending list of course of spots to check out. We definitely agree for those lucky to live Hawai’i to have the freshest fish with easy access!! 🤙🏽

Unless you're in the fishing industry, whether commercial/private...Very few know that HNL Fish Auction is the only UFA auction house in the U.S.
....Tsukiji Fish Market, now called Toyosu Market, is the more internationally known

BTW...What time does the auction start?

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel
      @michellejosefoodandtravel  9 місяців тому

The tour is from 6am - 7:30am. By the time we walked onto the floor around 6:15am, they had already completed bidding on several pallets already since the auction itself starts at 5:30am on the dot. We were told that they start unloading the boats at 1am and sorting them out in preparation for the auction.

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel

Hi Mo - sorry for the late response. Unfortunately since it is an auction the prices vary from day to day based on a number of factors such as how many boats brought in fish, what kind of fish was caught, and the quantity of the type of fish. Also the quality of each individual fish differs even if it's the same type of fish. We also didn't hear much of the auction portion itself as we had headphones on to hear our tour guide as he was providing information during the tour about the fishing industry in Hawai'i. We've heard prices can typically range from $9 - $25/lb again based on the type of fish (Big Eye Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, striped Marlin, opakapaka, ono, swordfish, and so on). You should go check it out for yourself if you have the opportunity and are in Hawai'i!!
