We no longer have the ties to Benn Hurr or Lawrence of Arabia... Those films were several generations ago that the initial release and impact have been lost compared to the modern films that still exist in our living memory... And FT is right, they don't make them like this anymore... Case in point, The Hobbit. The studio rushed development of that film and Peter Jackson could have either stepped away and let someone else direct... or stay aboard with the team that brought us LOTR... The only thing he didn't have through studio meddling was time to develop a Hobbit script.

@@davfree9732 LOTR like GOT was great when the director and team stuck to the book and tried to bring it to life. The Hobbit worked in the first movie as it mostly stuck to the book. But turning that into three movies was a massive mistake. Too much inventing of story lines that did not belong and detracted from the actual story being told.
Like GOT season 8 the Hobbit just fell apart when Hollywood writers took over. It felt rushed, plot holes emerged, the GOT as written by screenwriters probably never could have landed an ending with all the buildup for six seasons. Tolkien spent a lifetime fine tuning his books and Martin will spend a century finishing his books😉. Hollywood spent a few weeks, maybe months in comparison.

Here in Greece, movie theaters are 30-40% capacity AT BEST on most new movies. Every time (and that's like twice every year) that they put on the LoTR extended trilogy, they are sold out like 2-3weeks in advance. People would rather pay money to watch a movie they have watched literaly 20 times before and could watch at home for free, than pay to watch a new movie. That says A LOT about the quality of new movies compaired to 20-30 years ago.

@@randygiles845 You should watch the M4 Hobbit Book Edit if you want a great version of the Hobbit trilogy. The lead editor, M4, teamed up with talented digital editors to make a single film version of the trilogy. They desaturated, removed the glossy overlay, corrected the color grading, digitally omitted characters, and added film grain to make this version match the appearance of the LOTR trilogy! And they cut out all the excess stuff that wasn't in the original book. It corrects 90% of the problems of The Hobbit. This M4 fan edit transitions seamlessly and is more faithful to the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien. It's how I start my Middle-Earth marathon with my family, and I highly recommend it!

I think I first read the books about 1978, when I was 12. My sister who is 6 years older was reading them and I had actually studied The Hobbit in English class in 4th class, 1977. I was hooked. The writing is exquisite, the descriptions of people, and the world and themes have never been surpassed. You disappear into them, literally. The words are masterful. I never thought in my wildest dreams that anyone would be able to capture the words in a movie. But Peter Jackson and his brilliant team of masterful people did. I walked out of the theatre after seeing The Fellowship of the Ring in tears. It was so moving. I'm tearing up now typing this. The respect they paid to the source material, the dedication and hard work of the actors and skilled artisans that created it, the amount of sheer LOVE they poured into it was overwhelming. It will never be surpassed.

When we support and praise “prestige” television and film that is full of pessimistic, uninspiring, and nihilistic characters like Walter White, Tony Soprano, Don Draper, or any character from The Boys or The Walking Dead , of course studios and networks will respond and make more. They’re giving what the people want. They don’t want heroes to inspire or aspire to. They want characters as miserable and cynical as they are.

I think that a lot of writers today use so much inane dialogue because they expect the audience to have their head buried in their smartphone. If you are looking at your phone, so much visual information is lost and has to be filled in with people sitting around a table talking about what just happened. This is definitely an indictment of the writers for not telling a story that engages the audience and forces us to stay focused on what is happening.

Alan is right starting around 5:44 about how modern TV/film writers are missing a vital part of the picture "they feel like the words are so important". Words are indeed important but what's the idea they're conveying? What's the subtext? A similar problem is in literature where writers focus so much on prose but are weak on the context. So their prose is nice and flowery but the writing ultimately says very little.
The reason why work such as Tolkien's stand the test of time isn't that they're technically perfect (LotR is full of things to nitpick) but it's that it taps into a mythological framework that resonates with humans. The same goes for the SW OT. The journey that characters undergo, their "arc", is what is compelling. Too many stories are about "What is happening." more than "Why is this happening?".

LOTR trilogy and of course the original books are such amazing art. That Sam scene and many others stuck with me my entire life. They still tear me up when I watch them. Everything is perfect from the story, casting, acting, music. Its beautiful. It wasn't designed to be time filling content, it was there to tell a good story, with things you can take away from and apply in real life, make you think, make you appreciate life and the human condition. Its in a league of its own IMO.
My personal favorites that standout to me would be the Sam scene of course, but also the scene where Gandalf is talking with Frodo about Gollum, Frodo starts judging him and wishing he was dead, Gandalf tells him not to judge and "Even the very wise cannot see all ends". Its just a beautiful scene written and acted so well, with things you can take away with your own life. Values and morals and critical thinking. Just a beautiful thing...

I saw LotR in theatres last weekend too! It was brilliant!
Edit; my yheatre was originally only doing one screening and i wasn't going to ba able to make the time but then they opened a second screening a half hour later. I made that one. And even better, after i got there i saw that there was a third screening half an hour after that. I can't say that evey theatre was completely sold out but i know they where all pretty full. And I think they are doing it again, if not this weekend then next weekend.

It was so wonderful to experience all three in the theater again. I will say for a return of the king my showing was full of women like me. I think women outnumbered men. I wish I had the funds to do it all again this weekend. But last month I bought tickets for a showing of Indiana Jones an and the last Crusade at Alamo Drafthouse. I was #4 of 5 kids so it was rare Daddy took just me to a movie. But he did take just me to see it. I was 11. Im going in his memory. Imagine my excitement when I realized it’s actually on Father’s Day!

You used to connect to good/great movies.
Now, they can’t make you connect because they are trying to hard to have you identify yourself in them.

Thank goodness we got these films when we did. If they were made today they’d be a trainwreck of diversity checkbox-ticking, chock full of snarky revisions to the source material, and primarily focused on crapping on masculinity and Western civilization writ large.

Does it piss anyone else off how 3hr movies don't have intermissions anymore?! I mean it should be criminal, and why I don't like going to the movies anymore. Movies get longer and longer, and no intermissions!
You pay all that money, and you are guaranteed to have to miss 8mins of it walking to the restroom

I love the _Star Wars_ OT, with the first and second movie being the high points. However, Jackson’s original and extended cuts of _Lord of the Rings_ are superior.

I would be okay if they had gone back and reskinned some of the CGI buildings and things as really the biggest flaw in the Lord of the Rings is the dated CGI.

68 years old here . IMO the LOTR trilogy is the finest series of movies ever. I don't think it will be repeated due to the lack of talent in Hollywood generally.

There aren't too many beyond 2016 but there are certainly a few greats that came out after that year so Alan's statement is incorrect for me at least.

  • @Book-Mark

I did not like the movies. I was a book snob and most of the dialogue is altered from the book. Sam's speech included. And _how_ are they so clean? How is Sam so portly on a, 'Light tooth'? I'm less pedantic these days, the films are quite something. But no Bombadil? Unforgivable!

LOTR is perfect, it is the greatest and it's indisputable. I'm a bigger star wars fan because that's what I grew up with but LOTR is objectively better in every way.

You should clarify that you are talking about nihilism in entertainment film. Nihilism has been a facet of a lot of cinema since day 1.

  • @MasticinaAkicta
    @MasticinaAkicta 21 день тому

True, it was quite an age. If they would make the trilogy these days, well.. it would be burned down due to leaking out that Frodo now was a black trans lesbian. Because, DEI requirements. Not to mention, the writers would sneak in a lot of MODERN STUFF. In a classic old book tale, thanks... yeah. A lot of what LOTR is would be unrecognizable once the MODERN take got over it.
Hell, I am sure they would find a way to make The Orcs and SAURON not PURE evil but.. you know.. they were hurt too. Aka GREY morality.
In a story which is very Black and White!

  • @anthonybrett

I agree with them, but it has to be said that there are still a few great movies being made. They are just few and far between. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917, Deadpool, Hereditary, Dune 1 & 2, Blade Runner 2049, Avengers: Endgame-Infinity War, The Batman, Logan, Get Out, Joker, Hacksaw Ridge, Dunkirk, Tenet, Rogue One, The Northman, Lighthouse, Annihilation and lets not forget Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker...sorry, just threw that in as a joke.
Now you may love or hate some of these but they arent "bad" films. I just wish there more of them. ;)
