My father, Sidney Richard Lewis, was born in Lambeth in 1923.
In 2008, when he was 85 and recently widowed, we recorded some of his reminiscences. The material you will see and hear concerns his early years growing up in Ethelred Street (a street that disappeared with post-war redevelopment) near Lambeth Walk. The narrative features engaging, sometimes amusing, material about his grandfather who was an undertaker, and the family's combined businesses of funeral parlour and confectionery shop, with ice cream as well as coffins being made in the undertaker's yard.
This video is a tribute to Sidney and his family, and to a different time and way of life during the inter-war years in North Lambeth in London.
Additional content continues alongside and beyond the credits - so watch to the very end!
If you liked this, you can find Sidney talking about his war-time experience (accompanied by a unique collection of photographs) in "World War II Memoir of a Royal Air Force Commando" on my channel: JaneLewisArtist.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely loved this and actually made me emotional as it’s a wonderful video for your family to remember the past . My Great Grandparents came from Lambeth so this gave me a real sense of what it was like living there at that time .Thank you 😊
@@kimlakkides770 I'm so glad that you enjoyed it and could relate to the Lambeth of that time. I'll always be thankful that I captured some of my dad's memories in these recordings.
Lovely film . If only my mum was here to see it she no doubt knew your family , she grew up in Ethelred St she was born 1917 .Her mother and sister got killed in the Balham tube bombing in WW2 I can imagine your family would have arranged their funerals .
My mum also went to Lollards St school .
My Dad worked in his brothers fish shop in Lambeth wAlk Marshalls .
My mums maiden name was Lyle a family of 6 girls .
So sorry to hear about the bombing tragedy. My great grandfather the undertaker was retired by the second world war, and the family didn't carry on the business. I never knew who took it over.
I enjoyed watching this video. A very interesting story, and I can relate to this area of Lambeth, because my family and I grew up in and around Lambeth Walk. I've been all over the world, but, Lambeth was the best place where I enjoyed living. People were friendly, it was a safe place to live, we didn't need social media in those days, crime was low.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@janelewisartist Thank you, for acknowledging my comment about your video. Your story of your Dad was very interesting. Cheers!
My Dad used to go sea fishing with Charlie Palladino. Dad was born in Goda Street (not there now)
Couldn't afford the seaside Dad used the Thames when the tide was out 👌👌👌
