What should have happened is Unity becomes the vortex in the 30s, and Dream destroys her. By first trapping Dream, and then impregnating Unity, Desire creates the Vortex Rose, in the hope of tricking Dream into destroying her, as is his duty, but in the process Morpheus would have destroyed a relative, laying himself open to the judgement of the Furies. If it wasn't for Lucien, it would have worked.

The Endless are often dreadful, but that’s partly a function of what they are. They’re more than gods - they literally are their functions. (Even gods dream, have desires, know despair, can die, etc.) Death isn’t the goddess of death, an avatar of death, or a messenger of death - she is the *fact* of death, that every living thing can and will die. That’s why she presents as a kind person, because death is supposed to be a mercy for those whose bodies can no longer function and bring them only pain. Dream is often self-centered because dreams often are; they’re about our own thoughts and feelings and perceptions, and in dreams we often behave as if we’re all that matters. Desire is very id-centric because our desires often drown out judgment, reason, and decency; we want what we want and we don’t care that it’s not right or isn’t a good idea.

The casting for Desire was absolutely perfect. Mason's voice with that almost feline purr made Desire so much more than the comics ever could.

@@funnylilgalreacts Their casting is a great story. When the show was announced, Mason Park replied to Neil Gaiman's tweet saying, basically, "Please tell me you haven't cast Desire yet, because I desperately want to play them. Who is your casting director?" Neil replied, Park followed up and landed the role. It's basically the dream (ha ha) casting story.

Remember that Dream carries the entire subconscious of all living beings (human and otherwise) on his shoulders, he suppresses his own emotions because otherwise the sheer weight would overwhelm him. As for Desire and Dream, what Desire did was more than just annoying, what Dream says about Desire trying to make Dream spill family blood is really important.

Also he is infinity years old. *Any* evolution or advancement in his character is like the progress of a glacier or tectonic plate, slow by human standards but unstoppable. By one reading, he is just the reflection of all unconsciousness and he only shows the growth that is effected in the collective unconscious of all sentient creatures in the universe.

    • @jynxce
      @jynxce Рік тому +12

Exactly, he cannot be held to human standards of emotion. He doesn't deserve the "dick" title since he already experienced the destruction of a universe under the possibility that he let himself become mired in emotion before. He's responsible for all living subconsciousness and his function must take priority over feelings of the heart.

    • @JulioLeonFandinho

Morpheus isn't a human being and he's got no emotions, at least not as humans have, he's a personification of the totality of beings that dream and are conscious, he's also not a dick or an asshole, that's a frivolous judgement about the problem of being an intelligent and emotional living creature, meaning that he embodies all the good, bad and everything in between of ourselves, and he has to deal with all of that thinking more in the big picture than anything else, with no exception, like in real life bad and good things happens according to our behaviour and responsabilities

One thing that was unclear for me about Fiddler's Green in the comics was that he was modeled to look like G.K. Chesterton. I suppose that in England, where he is more of a pop culture figure from his time period, he was recognized immediately since you can still see his likeness in a lot of places, but as an American, I'd totally missed it. They made this slightly more clear in the tv series, since he asked Rose whether she was familiar with Chesterton's works in the episode where they first met, and it was explained somewhat more explicitly in the audiodramas. Just something interesting to note.

    • @GriffinPilgrim
      @GriffinPilgrim Рік тому +6

I always found the idea of Fiddler's Green so strangely practical in the mystical. Many sailors knew that they had done enough "sinful" things that they couldn't really get into Heaven but they thought Hell was a bit much, they weren't THAT bad, so they invented something in between.

I really hope we get all the seasons because you'll be able to see why Dream is the way he is. He's experienced some really traumatic things outside of the captivity. And he hasn't been able to actually face them because he doesn't get a moment to deal. He isn't really a dick, he's ancient being who isn't human but we expect to act in human ways - because we are human - who has also dealt with the unimaginable. I think once his whole story comes out, your view of him will evolve. Because he is a very fascinating protagonist. Not a hero, but not an antihero either. He's just Dream lol

You may have realized during this season that Sandman has a lot of short stories that are surprisingly well woven into a whole in this season. The stories have kept very much of the original feel to them - impressively so - and I'm very curious to see how they keep that up in season 2. I do like that they also tell some stories that can't be woven into the whole as you will see with episode 11 and very much hope they will do that in season 2 as well, because some of the best stories will be hard to weave into a season.

23:07 Considering the crazy vividness of Barbie's dream (a clear adventure where she's in charge, in comparison to the fairly simple dream scenes of the others, where the dream seemed to lead the dreamer), I keep wondering if she's a lucid dreamer. If that's the case, in her point of view, Ken's actions in his dreams would seem voluntary and Ken culpable for it. :D

The Sandman comic consists of several bigger story arcs (eg arc 1, Dream is captured, gets free and retrieves his trappings, arc 2 is Rose Walker and the Vortex). It also consists of a bunch of anthology standalones, eg The Sound Of Her Wings and the Hob Gadling stories. Episode 11 is the second anthology episode, with two smaller (but still important) stories just like episode 6.

Something that I keep in mind regarding Dream being kind of a dick...
Neil Gaiman is British, and culturally accustomed to the idea of royalty, their whims, and how they treat their subjects. American culture was rooted in defying royalty. As a Canadian, I get a bit from column A, a bit from B.
I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. I look forward to episode 11 and beyond.

  • @NuttersIncorporated

Desire, in the comics, straight up raped Unity. In the TV show, it’s very slightly better because Desire had a relationship with Unity in her dreams and Unity loved the person that she thought Desire was. However, Desire still lied to her and got her pregnant in the Waking World so it’s still rape.
Morpheus is the King of Dreams and Nightmares. A lot of the time he’s called Dream but you could also call him Nightmare and that would be right too. Nightmares might nor be pleasant but they can be important. They can make you face your fears, inspire you, help you recognise problems in your life, make you grateful to be alive and help remind you that its important to live in the real world rather than your dreams.
A lot of the fandom don’t like or feel ambivalent about Rose because they see her as a bit of a blank slate. She spends a lot of her time, in this series, reacting to things other people do. I think people would like her more if we’d had the chance to see her dreams rather than her just reacting to other people’s dreams.
Personally, I like Rose and think people are ignoring her personality. Rose feels guilty for living her life before her mother died rather than spending all her time looking for Jed and because of that, she now feels the need to put everyone else first even when it hurts. Rose gets angry at foster agent, she makes friends easily, she wants to be a writer, she will stick up for others and fight back if her life is in danger but would sacrifice herself for those she loves.

  • @samfisher6606
    @samfisher6606 Рік тому +8

I loved this episode. Stephen Fry was perfectly cast as Gilbert. He is an international treasure. His speech is taken practically verbatim from the graphic Novel. And the scene between Dream and Desire _is_ verbatim, except for Desire's "Next time, I'll draw blood." "Fiddler's Green" is a thing in the real world. It's an old sailor superstition, that instead of going to Heaven, you go to Fiddler's Green. While Rose is much more likable in the graphic novel, IMO, her story is better here. In the graphic novel, Gilbert, Corinthian, and she sort of just end up at the motel as a coincidence and then after the convention, she finds out she's the vortex. Here, she finds out she's the vortex early on and the Corinthian planned to use Rose. The reason that Unity can stay in the Dreaming is because anyone who dies in their sleep can stay in the Dreaming. That's why Matthew is considered a dream, he died in his sleep. The last scene in Hell is teasing the next _big_ storyline "Season of Mist," which is wild. It includes and Endless family dinner. This episode really was the season finale, episode 11 is really a special bonus episode. It covers issues 17 and 18, the first 2 issues in the "Dream Country" story, a set of 4 short stories. Season two will probably open with the 3rd story. They might drop the 4th altogether because it's heavily tied into DC comics. Really cool detail is that the title of Rose's book "Into the Night" is a title of one of the issues in the "Doll's House" storyline that didn't get used as an episode title. And watch out for Lyta's baby. He becomes very important later on.

To answer a few of your questions without spoilers:
Yeah, Desire is hella petty. They not only lack Dream's empathy for individual humans, they lack Dream's sense of obligation to the dreamers as a whole and obligation to their role. They are easily the cruelest of the Endless and, if there is a villain to this story, other than Dream's own inner flaws, arguably the main villain of the story.
Honestly though, besides his deep disdain for Desire (from a really cruel slight by Desire billions of years ago) Dream's aloof to all his siblings except Death. The Endless generally have trouble getting along and you'll see a bit of that next season. Thankfully it was just confirmed, yes there will be a second season.
I also would say that more than pride, Dream's big character flaw is being hidebound. He won't break or even bend any of his rules. In some ways that's a good thing and reflects his sense of duty. In others, it's a sign of his overweening pride and rigidity of thinking.
As for Lucifer's plan, it will be just to say just two words to Dream that will lay a trap that will put Dream at the greatest risk he's been in the series to that point.
And yes, the baby will be an important character. To say anything else will be a spoiler.
There was one prediction that you made where was like, "Oh honey, oh no." Watch the next episode and you'll see a bit of what I mean.

Wow this is a tough one. The Endless are not Gods. Dream is Dream and Death is Death and so on. The universe cannot exist without them. If Dream was to be destroyed the universe would just will a new one into being. The Sandman is about The Endless finding their own purpose. And that all sounds confusing.
What is tough is tying the concepts in the show to real life. The Endless represents all the influences in our lives that make us have purpose. The struggle is you. Everything that makes up who you are.

First, I think they did as good a job possible adapting the graphic novel. It was wonderfully done and I felt like the changes only added things.
This episode makes Dream's unholy dickishness make more sense. He knows 100% the vortex has to die, likely by his hands. And he is also burdened by the time he failed, which literally wiped out a universe. It makes sense that he rolls back his character development and becomes cold again. That said... oof did he mess that up, where some compassion would have gone a long way.
And when Dream is talking to Desire about killing family "and all that would entail"... something to remember.
Also, not sure if anyone said, but the Lucifer from this series inspired the character from the Lucifer Netflix series. Though there are significant differences. That series is really entertaining and worth a watch.
Also also, not sure if I've already asked if you've seen the Wheel of Time, that is a high fantasy meets dark fantasy series worth a watch (though I wish the adaptation was as well done as Sandman's).

Your questions get answered throughout the comic book run, not necessarily all in the next series. Meanwhile, new characters and stories will come and go leaving you wanting more, and then when you're frustrated old characters come back seemingly out the blue for a little treat. That's how you know the material is rich. That's why I think the source material finished too soon. Gaiman continued to write good stuff, but imo he shouldn't have moved on so quick.

Hi! I think you could get some of your questions answered and get some more background story by either: Reading the graphic novels or listening to the Audio play on Audible. There are a massive 68 actors involved in this, here are some of them:
James McAvoy - Dream, Andy Serkis - Raven, Michael Sheen - Lucifer, Riz Ahmed - the Corinthian, Taron Egerton - John Constantine,
Joanna Lumley - Lady Joanna Constantine, Justin Vivian Bond - Desire, Miriam Margolyes - Despair, Kat Dennings - Death, and many more.
Personally, I love Gaiman's Graphic Novels, TV Series and Audio Play.
Be warned though, the books and Audio Play are much more on the horror side of things.

I had the complete opposite impression of how Unity got pregnant, before this episode I assumed it was Kill Bill esque, but after this it made me think "Oh she actually did get pregnant in a dream, via Desire". It made me think the whole point of the side story about getting pregnant in a dream was to show you that was possible. It made me think the 'man' she married in her dream was Desire, since she described 'his' golden eyes

Well confirmation of Season 2 has been announced last week.
So time to speculate. If any of the boarding house residents dreams could be adapted further, who's would you like to see expanded?
One thing about the source material is that there were a lot of short stories, and the Bonus episode 11 delves into that. And if you want to, the DC Showcase: Death is an animated short that follows her on one of her jobs. It's not directly linked to the show, but it's in the style of how she appears in the comics and can be seen as just another short story.

about making Corinthian and a better version: The purpose of a nightmare is to allow us to see aspects of our collective selves that scare us. To help us be scared by and scared away from our own charming monsterous aspects. Nightmares are shadows cast by ourselves, every nightmare you've ever had was your fears and the darkness in your own mind, it is a part of you. And seeing that aspect of ourselves helps drive us away from and fight to oppose those things in ourselves in the world. Corinthian twisted that, and by escaping to the real world because inspiration to those other people who followed his example, while also no longer haunting their dreams to help them fear that part of themselves.

I know that there’s reason to hate on Dream sometimes, but I’m glad you got to see that the real dick is Desire, as fascinating as they are. Petty and cruel, with no care for the fact that if Dream destroyed Rose, he would’ve been killed by the Fates. What I don’t get (maybe a comic book reader can tell me), it’s been established that relationships with mortals is forbidden for the Endless (established in the Nada story) yet Desire suffers no consequences from fathering a child with Unity.

If this show doesn't get renewed I will be heartbroken. I need to see more, I'm SO enthralled by this universe! The Endless as a concept is so fascinating, and such creative portrayals of these different ideas. I definitely love Dream, personally, he absolutely is cruel and heartless at times, but his growth has been so lovely to see!
This show is exactly my favourite vein of story, which are stories that have some dark, serious elements/tone, and probably plenty of tragic events, but are filled with optimism, hope, and likable characters. I adore dark stories that have positive themes of love, hope, and you know that no matter how bad things get, even if not everyone will make it through, and even if it won't all be how you want it to go, ultimately light will shine through eventually.
Some of my personal favourite other stories of various media like this are Demon Slayer (anime), The Malazan Book of the Fallen (novels), Arcane (animated tv), even Game of Thrones (TV, i havent read the books) to some extent (though personally I hold Malazan higher in this aspect among fantasy q;).

There will be more episodes! Not clear if we'll get another season of this length for a while, the budget is pretty hefty so they might just do half-seasons based on one volume at a time, along with specials the next episode covering the more stand-alone stories. As Neil Gaiman himself put it, this season was really more like two short seasons and a special so that works for me!

Rose is different. The Baby that was conceived only because Rose was in the dream and was merging reality with the dreaming. I don’t think the Baby would be truly human. I think when the infant matures to a point that they start showing they aren’t completely human.
The husband became a ghost rather than just a dream of the wife because Rose was beside the wife every day since her husband died. I think she brought him from death into the dreaming, a place a human soul can only be if meant to be there, like Mathew.
I don’t think Dream is a complete asshat, but I do think he sees humans as fleeting beings. I don’t think they touch his heart unless he has a chance to know them. I think he’s growing though. I think his imprisonment & quest to be free & feeling powerless humbled him a bit. It just isn’t coming through all the time.

I don't think they are actually going for Unity being r@ped in this, actually. The Lyra story establishes that you can get pregnant in a dream and it will come to reality if a vortex is involved. Since Unity was supposed to be a vortex and she knew her lover in the dreaming, I think that's what happened to her as well. That's not how it was in the comics, though...
The baby does come into play again but not until the end of the series. Don't look into it, because it would be a major spoiler.

  • @jtmaxwell

In the comics, Desire impregnating Unity is much more explicitly rape as they forced themselves on her in the Waking World. In this version, I think they intentionally left it a bit more open to interpretation by introducing elements like Unity living an entire life in the Dreaming where she had a relationship with her "golden eyed man" and the concept that a Vortex can cause a pregnancy in the Dreaming to manifest in the Waking World as well (as Rose does with Lyta). There's still some argument for whether any relationship with Desire can be considered consensual since no one can resist them, but it at least becomes more ambiguous than the literal forced physical impregnation of an unconscious young woman as depicted in the source material.
(and oh, there are SO many comments throughout this reaction especially at the end where I have to fight the instinct to type out more "in the comics" style comments, so instead i'll just bundle them all up into a "wait and see". ;) )

What Lucifer does...is actually kind of funny. The consequences aren't but , there is a whole six season show that is a riff on it. But yeah, even season two will start with an event that you will be yelling at eithet Dream not to fall for it, Death to shake him, or Desire to just stop already.
Now do you see the risk of Lyta's son? He wouldn't be a vortex but he could be in danger.
I have also always kind of thought that part of Dream's issue is that Fiddler's Green wasn't there and he is called the heart of the Dreaming.

I don't think desire raped Unity because Unity talks very fondly about her goldeneyed man. And as one that's read the comics remember that desire can appear as she normally does kind of ambiguous on the sexuality desire can appear fully male and fully female that's why Unity says that she's not sorry because then she would never have met her golden-eyed man. So I don't think desire raped her just brutally but maybe gave her the desire to have sex and raped her that way just so she'd have a child. I don't mean to diminish rape but Unity clearly loves her GoldenEye man and is glad she met him to have her children but still what desire did is horrifying. And you should also remember that when an endless kills family there is dire consequences it would have been the end of dream to kill Rose Walker because she is family. Can't wait to see your next reaction you're brilliant!!
