Is bigger and powerful always the best? In this video I review 3 of the most popular mini pruning chainsaws sold at Home Depot. Along the way, I discover that one of these models has a place in my garage.
The three models that I review are the Ryobi 8 inch 18v one+ model P5452BTL, Milwaukee m12 12v 6in fuel hatchet model 2527, and the Makita LXT 18v brushless 8" small chainsaw XCU06Z.

Before adjusting the chain consider removing the battery.
Great advice - better safe than sorry
Yes, peterdemented, because if you don't, you might accidentally depress the safety device and then accidentally press the trigger and then accidentally slit your throat with it and die! Frankly, if you are that stupid, you shouldn't be using a chainsaw.
Ah man, the Makita looked like it was the monster of the group too!
It is a good saw - just not a pruning saw
I thought I saw the same, glad Mr. Kite Army clarified.
Another content creator pointed out something very important. He chose the Ryobi not because it was the best or the fastest at getting the job done. But because it wasn't the heaviest, and the chain spun slower than some of its competitors. Making it more controllable thanks to the weight, the slower rotation, and the slightly shorter length. But unlike some 6-inch hand-helds that only have room for one hand, the Ryobi 8-inch one requires two. Again, more control. Plus, being a DIY brand, the core customer user isn't going to need something for felling trees all day long.
A 76 year old single senior lady, doing all my own yard work for the past 20+ years. I found your review extremely thorough and so helpful. Thanks a bunch!
My reciprocating saw is a Ryobi and it doesn’t take a standard/universal blade; nor do they make a pruning blade for it. Was quite annoyed when I found this out. As for their mini chainsaws, apparently do not make replacement chains available- no auto oiler is also a no no for me. Will not be buying any more Ryobi products; I bought a 4 piece kit back in 2008; 5” circular saw, drill, reciprocating saw and flashlight (the latter never used!!) Then I bought a 18 V weed eater and sander; these two use same battery and charger. These all work well, so was thinking of buying a mini chainsaw as I have the appropriate battery and charger already- but not after this review!
I thought the Makita 🙂 thanks for the review 👍👋
Solid machine
I've had the Milwaukee M12 for about a month now, and it's excellent!
I have the Ryobi and the Makita, definitely love the Makita, it's an awesome little saw.
Thank you for the information, it was very helpful!
You're welcome!
I got the skil 6” saw earlier this week and used today to clear out wild trees and rose of Sharon between 2 wooden fences between mine and neighbors. I was using hedge clippers but stuff getting too thick. Saw was awesome. Look and size much like the Milwaukee one. Got the saw, 5 ah battery and charger for $129 off Amazon.
Do another test with the M18 saw
Will do
Video ever made?
yay i chose it too
Thanks for the video! I'll be picking up the Makita. I would like to have the Ego CSX3000. I just wish the design was better as in no harness for the battery but I get it.
Right you mean the battery lanyard? I have never used the EGO but it looks awesome.
@@Kitearmy Yes.
I luv my Makita..you didn’t mention the turbo button..hidden kick…lol…
Pl. Tell me about stand which keeps wood perfectly
When will we be seeing a review of the new ego cxs5000 or cxs2005 20" chainsaw 55cc equivalent? Thanks
If your budget is so tight that you need the Ryobi, maybe consider buying a bow saw. A decent one will cut just as fast and for a fraction of the price.
agreed
I saw a video where Ryobi was talking about how they tested the speed of the chain on the pruner and determined that if they cut down on the chain speed, you would not need any bar oil to cool the chain. Evidently, some homeowners complained about bar oil leaking, and this was their solution to that problem. I say, if you don't want to mess around with bar oil, then just use a reciprocating saw with a 9-inch pruning blade. That's all I have ever needed for small branch pruning for the past 15 years. As much as I like Ryobi, I decided to pass on this pruner. This video just confirms I was right.
It will cut faster than a bow saw and it will out work you. If you have 10 different ryobi 18 volt tools already you would be a fool to buy anything else.
Makita 💯
most power for sure
You should probably remove the battery when working on the chainsaws, just in case.
I have the m12 hatchet and it works amazing it blows my mind that it’s only 12v and keeps up with the bigger ones. To me it’s perfect
I really like the m12 hatchet
I really like my 20 volt dewalt
I have not tested it - but I can say that I have never been impressed with Dewalt yard tools
Купив мілуокі 18 в. Супер .
IIRC, Ryobi deliberately slowed down the chain speed on this pruner so it would never need bar oil. That's supposed to be a feature for some homeowners, I guess. I'm not convinced. The Ryobi sure was a lot slower than the others. My questions, why would anyone buy a small pruner like these when you can buy a reciprocating saw, that can be used for many tasks, and just put a 9-inch pruning blade on it? Have you considered a test between a reciprocating saw with pruning blade and one of these pruners? I just don't see the need for any of these small pruners if you have a reciprocating saw. But I could be wrong. Nice review of these pruners just the same. Thanks.
Good point - I have used a reciprocating to do this work too - the chainsaw is generally faster
My reciprocating saw is a Ryobi and it doesn’t take a standard/universal blade; nor do they make a pruning blade for it. Was quite annoyed when I found this out. As for their mini chainsaws, they apparently do not make replacement chains available. @@patriciaannetripp4844 I have 3 different model Ryobi reciprocating saws and they all take standard/universal blades. You can get pruning blades from lots of companies. I never heard of a Ryobi reciprocating saw that does not take standard blades. What model do you have?
You not getting any snow yet Andy? I'm dying for a review on the new EGO single stage. I haven't seen any good videos on it yet. One guy did one but he only had like a inch or less of snow and never talked about how the auger assist works.
No snow yet - I have it at the ready. Fingers crossed for snow😀
@@Kitearmy can't wait for it :)
@beezer5623 I can't believe its the end of Jan without snow 😲
@@Kitearmy yeah suffering the lack of the white stuff in southern CT. Probably end up getting one monster storm. Then nothing else.
At least on paper the Greenworks 82CS34 has the most power. Would be interesting to see them face off with the DCS677.
I would love to test the Greenworks
Honestly, I feel like if the ryobi had a bit more chain speed, it might b a better bet. Looks like it’s a lot slower than the others.
3-in-1 oil for the chainsaws without an oiler.
I didn't like how heavy the Milwaukee saw was. I like the Stihl GTA 26 and other small 4 and 6 inch saws. The Ryobi definitely wasn't a fit for me.
I didn't think the Milwaukee was that heavy - maybe 4ish lbs
DeWalt?
Without even watching I predict Makita, then Milwaukee with Ryobi a distant 3rd.
Makita had the best performance but for this type of saw I lean toward the Milwaukee
@@Kitearmy makes sense. Does makita make a smaller 18v saw?
@@bikes7777 no -this is the smallest from Makita - not truly a pruning chainsaw
@@Kitearmy Yes they do, the DUC122Z has been out for over 2 years. Makita did this way before anybody else and it's a little monster just not geared towards arborist work like the top handle saw you're comparing here.
@@bikes7777 DUC122Z is the Makita tool you're asking for.
Back Away From The Camera!!
no way - look at this pretty face
I used your link to get this and I have lost over $200.
I love EGO but that’s not actually the most powerful cordless saw you can buy.
The dewalt 20in is most powerful
@@loucifer4205stihl is. The new model
The Ryobi is rubbish if you have to keep stopping to oil the chain!
thee is not a winner it was a set up for the kool-aid Milwaukee crab ad usual for this channel its crab and should be avoided by all costs
Can't trust you, if my kid handled the bar and worse the chain with the battery still connected, as you did, he would NEVER be allowed to handle a chainsaw ever again. Remove the damn battery every time b/4 handling a chain.
Kobalt is better
