  • Edita sings Zerbinetta from this 1982 production of Ariadne auf Naxos directed by Filippo Sanjust. This is the same production that was filmed in 1977/78 for the film now available on DG.
I love the way Gruberova flirts - not only with the words but with the notes themself - she caresses them amazingly. Brava!

all this talk of scooping is so far past ridiculous anyway. She was THE Zerbinetta of her era and absolutely the talk of Vienna back then. Of course she doesn't do the role anymore. But really....scooping...what nonsense. If you can turn a high D into a D-E trill you don't have to scoop anything. People are so silly. (It's called legato, by the way) Jeez

Actually, there is someone now who sings Grossmaechtige Prinzessin better than on this clip, and she's Edita Gruberova herself. She's still singing the role and better than ever!!! My 2nd and 3rd favorites right now include Natalie Dessay and Diana Damrau in this role.

When we were auditioning for opera houses in Germany in the 1980's, the three of us Americans went to hear/see Ariadne in the Wiener Staatsoper, (Stehplaetzer- think Red Shoes- it was that crazy!) Agnes Baltsa was the Komponist and Gruberovna was Zerbinetta. OMG! While she may not be my choice for a recording of the work, she sang this ENTIRE scene, and hit EVERY NOTE smack on. I swear, she sang so high, only dogs could hear it! At the end of her scene, the audience went utterly MAD! Brava, EG!

Gruberova was one of the rare ones who could sing the original part.........Sills did it too ...

but Damrau and Dessay do not sing the original.....must admit though that looking at the complete score, (many sections are traditionally cut ) its a terribly ravagingly difficult aria , I think, the very last one ever written for a coloratura
showcase. I might be contradicted on this opinion?

That note at 2:49--pure magic. Honestly, I hate the Deutekom-ness of her coloratura in the upper register, but my god is her voice beautiful. Her attacks on notes are the cleanest I have ever seen.

I'm not even close to being a Gruberova fan. I hate some of the bad habits she gathered over the years and don't really like her dramatic attempts.
Yet, i say this with no fear: she OWNS the part.

I sing this aria as well, and I have a recording of her singing this. It is so amazing to actually see her do this. She makes it look soooo easy! Lovely

She did not NEED to scoop...there is MUCH evidence of her "nailing" high notes...have you never heard her incomparable Mozart concert arias?
