As seen with arcane, sometimes the difference between the top rotation and the simple rotation can be minimal. Play what makes sense, because knowing your spec and what to do is a DPS increase over a complicated spec that you don't understand

i agree with you, their fascination for overcomplicating this game is making me quit after 15+ years of playing a mage. my hands hurt when playing any spec really, and they constantly change playstyles, so you can't really learn and use the knowledge for a longer period of time, you constantly have re-learn your muscle memory..

also the actions per minute are pretty high

Great guide, just wondering when you say that if you have 4 icicles you should use Flurry even without a proc to then cast glacial spike, but wouldnt it be better to either cast a frost bolt or FoF ice lance at 4 icicles (assuming you dont have a brainfreeze proc) to get a chance of a brainfreeze proc to then cast glacial spike into flurry? I dont really see how a flurry at 4 icicles would be better in that scenario

Hey Manather, thank you very much for the guide! I had some clarifying questions for the ST rotation that I don't think you fully expanded on in the video:
1. If we only have 1 Flurry charge and 4/5 Icicles, is it ever worth munching a few more icicles to wait like 5+ sec for Comet Storm and/or Ray of Frost to come off cooldown before GS shattering, vs just shattering GS and then waiting for the next Flurry cast to be available? If ever, I'd assume this would be done outside of Icy Veins due to Thermal Void, but outside of IV I'm just assuming the worst case scenario where you don't get a Brain Freeze proc for like 15sec and your 2 big CDs are just sitting unused
2. Similarly, is it worth holding Frozen Orb for up to 10ish+ seconds until Icy Veins is cast for guaranteed FoFs from Freezing Winds to maximize the value of Thermal Void and get extra IL damage from Frigid Empowerment?
Also, here's some questions I answered myself after some target dummy testing, if anyone had similar thoughts:
1. It looks like there are occasions where we miss out on the 1st of 3 Winter's Chill stacks from Flurry just to get to Glacial Spike faster (example: your rotation at 19:06 + your spell priority list). Is it a DPS loss to do a FB -> Flurry shatter when at 4 Icicles causing 1 munched Icicle, rather than just raw casting Flurry without a precast simply to get WC on the target and get GS out sooner? ANSWER: after inspecting Details doing quick rotations: a FB cast with WC debuff averages ~30k, but a frozen IL is ~63k, and WC GS is ~140k, so no shattering a FB does extremely little damage compared to all other spells affected by WC + the cast time is not worth. Seems like Frost Bolt has been successfully nerfed to a pure filler / Icicle generator spell, which is good.
2. Looking at the priority list, it states don't cast Ray of Frost on the 2nd WC tick if Freezing Winds is still going. You state that it's just due to us not munching FoF procs, but on the 5th prio step for Frozen Orb you say "you don't want to use this if you could be Ray of Frosting". Since RoF is our highest damage-per-cast spell, does this mean that back to back IL FoF instant casts are higher DPS than a shattered RoF? My quick dummy tests show that a shattered RoF is ~85k/0.8sec while IL is ~63k. ANSWER: It seems while in a vacuum it's a DPS loss to continue to cast FoF instead of RoF, the overall damage should better because you're getting the maximum value out of both spells / talents.

I was watching a Toegrinder video and he was suggesting possible Ray of frost and Splintering Ray for Aoe in Mythic plus, do you think on DUngeons with smaller pulls this is the play , like a VP ? I know sometimes Toe is more of a fire guy, I was just wondering. I think he dropped GS and picked up Ray , he said his sime had it higher but not by much.
His sims weren't using 10.1.5 apls on mage-hub, so it wasnt actually using ray of frost, even if the html report is wrong and he was, it was still over 50k dps below the highest simming unfreezable AOE build/apl. Atm in pure AOE ray of frost seems to never be worth casting. Dropping Glacial Spike is also a massive ST loss so I dont think that will end up happening, which he also acknowledged. (BTW his sims should be up to date as soon as the apl gets pushed to simc, there just hasnt been a new one pushed to the default yet.)

On mythic assault on zaqali, I am assuming those mobs cant be frozen? I was a little confused why your aoe skill tree doesnt have water element? I spent 10 min trying to figure out how to summon him, but noticed lonely winter is selected.

yes, but you need an ice lance or glacial spike between the comet storm and ray. My timestamps are working now so you can see some of the combos under the ray of frost section.

Hi Manather, thanks for the amazing guide! Just had a question regarding the AOE rotation. Given that the Water elemental's Freeze applies maximum stacks of Frigid Empowerment (which increases frost damage you deal by 3% up to 15%), would it not be beneficial to use that in the rotation as soon as possible after casting Icy Veins so that all of our subsequent spells get the benefit?
So the opener might be: Blizzard > IV > Freeze > Frozen Orb > Comet Storm > Cone of Cold > Frozen Orb > etc.
Perhaps I'm missing something.

the water jet will also give you fully stacked stacks in like 2s, so given we can be a bit short on freezes at times we save it for Glacial Spike
@@Manather Aha that makes sense, I didn't see any mention of Water Jet doing that in the final patch notes so thought maybe it had changed. Water Jet changes in the patch notes only mention its cooldown and damage. Thanks for the clarification.
@Manather not sure if this has been answered yet, we only IL with FoF and last GCD was not GS. If we have FoF procs come up after we GS and we don't have CS, Flurry, RoF, Frozen Orb and Shifting power up. What would you recommend? would it be just frostbolt and then go into IL with the FoF procs? also do you do coaching at all?
The ice lance with fof restriction to not do it after GS is only if you are GSing on the last stack of winters chill. So in this situation, instead of a (flurry -> ice lance -> GS -> ice lance) where the ice lance would consume the winters chill instead of the GS, you would (flurry -> ice lance -> gs -> frostbolt/shifting power -> ice lance/flurry) the / meaning or for whatever is up.
Atm I am not doing coaching, but I highly recommend dropping raid logs in the mage discord, or target dummy logs for feedback.

@Manather Heeey, quick question! On fights like Assault, echo, and sark, would you use the ST/Cleave build? Or the the AoE build? (in current patch I use AoE build)
On Assault I'd use the AOE build with ray of frost. On sarkareth this is where a meta might play out. So there are a few options but the main one will probably be dropping slick ice for coldest snap. You might also drop cryopathy for splintering ray, but that hurts your boss dmg quite a bit so its more of a pad thing. As for echo I would probably go the assault build again, but it might end up better to do the sarkareth version (but with cryopathy).

1. if winters chill runs out during ray of frost should i cancel it or keep it till the end of cast?
2. Does comet storm need winters chill on target as it hits it or just during cast? (should I wait for all comets to hit before i cast lets say ice lance to use it)

2. Don't wait for comet storm to hit or anything, it does need it on the target when it hits, but using it as instructed in the video (with no pauses in following spells) is the correct way to do so.

When Icy veins expires, how do you go about shattering Glacial Spike if both ice nova and frost nova are on CD, do you cast it anyways ? or do you wait for one of them to come up? Also I don't understand why I would only press Frozen Orb/ Blizzard if previous GCD was Glacial Spike, does this rule only apply to none freezable enemies? Thanks for you time!
you would shatter it with flurry. And its pressing orb/blizzard if your previous gcd *wasn't*, just because you want to shatter gs. And yes this only applies to freezable enemies.

I am, however, wondering if this spec will be too complicated for my middleaged brain. I have played Frost for a year now and do M+'s up to 14-16. Is Fire as complex as this (or Arcane) or less complicated? (which could make me consider changing spec)
I think it gets more intuitive the more you play it, but fire is definitely less complicated I’d say.
@@Manather imo, fire is harder due to more unforgiving playstyle, if can really mess a lot if you fail to use sun king's at the right time or overcap on any of the filler spells. plus due to increased haste stacking, its easy to double click your fire blast or something like that
current frost is really just chilling and when not in double lust it feels a lot slower than fire

outside of icy veins when i have 5 icicles and im waiting for a brainfreeze to proc, should i continue with frostbolt into flurry into glacial or should i cancel frostbolt/not cast frostbolt and glacialspike first and flurry after so i get the new icicle proc from my flurry + have 2 winters chill ?
dont cancel glacial spike, if you can start a GS -> flurry without canceling thats ideal, but you just frostbolt till you get brainfreezes, and queue a flurry after frostbolt if you react to getting BF during a frostbolt cast.

You only GS into frostbolt if your target has 1 stack of winters chill and you want GS to shatter it instead of anything else
@Manather in your AoE rotation, are we using cold snap after pur cone of cold to get back comet storm, blizz, orb etc?
Cold snap doesn't do that anymore. The talent "coldest snap" makes cone of cold reset the cool down of your frozen orb and comet storm when you hit 3+ targets.
Cold snap is pure defensive use now.

For ST, when all our CDs are down and our Icy Veins is finished, I feel lost as to what to do in this dead part until we wait for the next IV. I feel like I am just pressing frostbolts and fishing for Brain Freeze procs which hardly happen at all during this dead part of the rotation. Do we ignore our fingers of frost procs and just keep frostbolting until we get a brain freeze during this dead part?

it autocasts, and its recommended you leave it on autocast
In the case that the target does not have winter's chill, we have 4 icicles, and at least one fingers of frost (like we are likely to have during the opener), why do we raw cast flurry? If we cast ice lance, we would get another icicle and be able to precast glacial spike into flurry, and then would have one more icicle, one more winter's chill stack, and one more ice lance damage at the end for the cost of one gcd (ice lance gcd + glacial spike cast + flurry gcd vs flurry gcd + glacial spike cast). That seems like it would be better to me.
We’d cast ice lance in that situation, I think I said it during the priority but its not written. Its quite minor, only about 0.2% gain but still obv worth it
Not sure if it was typo in the 10.1.5 official patch notes but looks like invis will be baseline now, at 12:45 you said it was gone?
He meant that Greater Invis now replaces regular Invis, you can't have both.

They are not all freezable, tbh trial and error is the best way at the moment but I expect some solutions like plater coloring to come out.

If I have 4 charges of icicles and finger of frost and furry, what do I do? I cast "ice lance", spike + furry or furry to have 5 and then use spike?. My problem is when I have 4 charges, and I have furry available (with brain freeze or not) and fingers or frost also available. Sorry my bad english

You should macro freeze with /cast freeze. The water jet can be left on auto.

Best advice I can add is get to the target dummies and practice, a LOT. You'll get into the flow after a few hours.

He mean any freeze thats up like Ice Nova, Frost Nova, Pet Frost Nova or Cone of Cold. (also Flurry can work)

Thanks for the video I’ll be here quite a bit. I feel stupid I got the aoe rotation down no issues. I’m struggling so bad with st!! I just hit 70 and did not buy gear yet. So I’m 264 i level I can aoe for 400k burst and stay at 80-100k in wow no issues. When I go to st I’m at like 30k burst and can’t sustain 15k. I’ll figure it out thanks to this but I feel stupid when I comes to it
Great guide and explanation, in my mind, everything is there... i know what to do, but i cant do it... the AOE is complicated if u want to perform, theres so much stuff to follow. Muscle memory from years of playing the old frost is hard to retrain. I guess everything will come with practice... i`ll give it a about two weeks, if it doesnt come, i guess i`ll switch to fire :))
"Ice Lance is Banned" I cracked up
Having a small issue with Cone of Cold not applying Winters Chill all the time. I am in melee range but it seems to not apply. I am in M+ build as well. This happening to anyone else?
With the new Capstone you need to hit atleast 3 Targets to get the reset and chill.

It is not. 2/3 of your comet storms are shattered by cone of cold’s winters chill. And saving shatters for glacial spike is more worth it than shattering an extra comet storm. Especially since your nova wouldnt shatter all the cms.

My mistake was, that i didnt realise you can shatter 2 comet storm with one cone of cold since they are not consuming winters chill and the debuff lasts long enough for both casts. But that beeing said, if cone of cold has more than 20sec CD and im "allowed" to cast a "in between" comet storm, im not intentionally shattering this one. right?

The current rotation „was“ quite simple with solid DPS output.
With patch 10.1.5, I am a little scared that we have to put much more effort into it to do the exactly same DPS whereas the potential messing up the rotation is higher causing a DPS loss at the end compared to now.😥

I think if you look at the numbers its not the same dps if you play new rotation correctly. Bursting up to 700-800k on 5 targets? Thats never happening in 10.1 even with lust
even if the dps is the same on paper,it will be higher on practice for the average Mage,this is the biggest issue Mages had ,the dps was too inconsistent depending on too many variables.
Yes this is exactly what i was talking about on the discord and on blizz forums but people were saying i am stupid for thinking that. Complexity is great, i am all for it if we can sub it out but this just seems like we are locked into doing all this fraction of second additions to get some extra DPS out. I really do hope there is a simple rotation that doesn't involve having fingers of a teen to actually pull off okay if not pretty good DPS.
It seems it went from simple to above average in skill needed if you ask me. I use to think Feral was difficult but its a cake walk compared to the gymnastics we have to pull for frost now. It makes me want to go rogue instead, because if i need to juggle all this crap i may as well play something else. Or maybe i should play something with a hell of a lot less chance of being one shot in high keys.. warlock maybe.

I did a quick 18 NL last night to have a little go at new frost. I did 20% more damage than usual but playing terribly!!

what Ilvl are you? ilvl seems to make a massive difference in dps, on the dummies im only pulling like 230k on the opening then consitent around 160k after that, your hitting 600k+ xD, im 420ilvl
