The band didn't want to tour behind that song. The Hysteria tour lasted about 14 months, if Love & Affection was released as a single that meant the band was going to be out for another 4-5 months. The last month of the tour was brutal. EVERYONE, and I do mean EVERYONE (band, road crew, management, etc) were completely fried and burned out and just wanted to go home. Several people on the road crew celebrated their birthday TWICE while on tour. I could go on and on about that tour. The name 'Hysteria' was extremely appropriate.
Would it change anything, had they released this(or the brilliant Gods of War), instead of the mediocre Women? Don't you think that their decision to never release any of their epic songs(Die hard the hunter, Gods of War, White Lightning, Desert Song, Pearl of Euphoria... to name a few) did cost them? White Lightning was the only decent song out of the crappy Adrenalize after all!
It didn't cost them anything. Hysteria went Diamond (over 10 million units sold). Adrenalize was a completely different record and with Steve's situation and Mutt not being in the studio (for a lot of reasons) the vibe of the band was completely different.
When I bought the album as a kid about 15 years ago, I listened to Hysteria, Love & Affection, and Run Riot the most. Still love all three and think they're a cut above the rest although all the songs were great.
One of the best songs Def Leppard have ever written. If it was released as a single,it would have been a monster smash hit.Can never understand why it wasn't-one of lifes mysteries!!!!
The late Steve Clarke should be proud of these guys for keeping it real and keeping his influence thru all of these years of success after his passing. Nothing says more about the respect these guy have for Steve than still using his influences and style in creating music today that keeps his memory alive. Def Leppard is one of the quintessential rock bands of all time. Im proud to still be rocking them in 2020 and will for many years to come.
Sorry to reply after 12 years...I certainly agree with you, but the solo is definitely Phil. It’s got whammy bar scoops at the end, and Steve only ever rarely played a trem-equipped guitar unless it was the occasional Firebird, being exclusively the Gibson player he was. I think I’ve seen ONE video of him with a black Paul-style Gibson equipped with a trem bar. Gibsons are famous for their sustain, and any tremolo unit on a guitar bridge will adversely affect sustain. So all in all, it’s pretty rare to see a trem on a Gibson solid body. Steve DID do the tasteful ride-out licks on the final chorus on this one, though.
I'm 37 now. No kids, no wife...never went down that road unfortunately. I would've loved to shown my kids what great "feeling" music sounded like. I almost want to cry when I think about how fast the time has past since I was drawing Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Guns n Roses on my "Trapper Keeper". Such an awesome time. 1987. I was 12 and had floor standing speakers stacked to the ceiling...CRANKED. We lived the greatest era. Cherish your youth. It goes fast. For some, we never quite leave it.
You do not need wife or kids Def Leppard´s music is for every body I havea 20 years old son and he likés this the same way I like it (I was 21 at the time this song was on the air) Def Leppard good music is for all and it is forever
Don't gimme love and affection or what you think it should be...Don't gimme love the wrong reason.... I don't need your understanding....... Damn what a beautiful masterpiece
I really don't care about license plates but Def Lepp is still a great band and I think Steve was at the top of the mountain. There will never anyone like him for sure. I agree that they don't sound the same but they sound as great as they did in the beginning. When you are around that long, you don't want to sound the same. It's evolving and I think they are doing it very well. Luv def lep
This songs needs more attention!! In terms of quality and addictiveness, it is almost on the same level as Pour Some Sugar on Me and Armageddon It and definitely at least on a par with songs like Animal and Rocket. Still don't understand why this song is so much less well known than others from Hysteria.
a91033 I thought it was 1 of the best on Hysteria. They released 7 singles off that record, If I remeber correctly they fought over Rocket and Love and Affection for the last single, Rocket won, not my pick. I love this song today just as much as I did back then, should have been a single!!!! Would have made the top 10 no doubt. Great lyrics, and the song fits.
I remember when the hysteria tour opened. When the drummer had the courage to go on and play with one arm.I also remember when the Adrenalize tour began and the band had to go on without Steve Clark. It seemed like it was all they could do to play without him.I attended both tours. God Bless all of them. They should be listed as one of the top survival bands!!!
Mark Thomas From all the things that happened to them as a group, they are a miracle. One of my favorite rock and roll groups from my high school years in mid 70's
The end of the Hysteria tour and the pre-production sessions for Adrenalize was a really uncomfortable period. Those were dark, dark days.. So many tried to help. I'll leave it at that.
Def Leppard's finest moment! It's amazing how this beautiful and nostalgic song, which is one of their best, and is filled with much soulful reverie and longing that just reverberates so deeply, scarcely received the airtime, or the critical acclaim, of all the others that were part of the album from which this sublime song sprang ((probably thee premier and finest Rock album that ever came out during that decade!))! GREAT song, GREAT sound, GREAT album, GREAT times!!
hysteria, of all def albums has a magical effect on me. i dont know but i just cant stop loving this album for 24 yrs. im 31 now. imagine how long. ive grown to love metallica, dreamtheater and all those heavy metal stuffs but still, there is no way an album bested this 1.
Patty Brown/ The lead singer is Joe Elliott!! I've been listening to this Band since 1979 at the age of 17. Been to 11 of their Concerts! Saw them twice in one week In 'The Round' from Nashville Tn to Memphis Tn. Still my Rock God's. at the age of 56 now!!
Patty Brown/ O, as yes Joe is Hott!! I miss Steve Clarke and his twirling around on stage!! Love Rick Savage, the unique back up singer ever!! Rick Allen with one arm made a awesome come back after his car wreck yrs ago & is The Best Drummer of ALL TIMES!!
My fave song of course I have more than one Joe Elliott sings from the heart not only does he have the extreme talent but always had the drive to succeed they all do love and admiration of Def Leppard I’ll always have
well put together! This song is SOOOOO underated, I wonder why it never got the exposure the other hits did, unless the album just spoke for itself! Love it, love it!!!
20 years strong, amazing they're not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of fame. Joe Elliot said it best..."never mind the girls, the parties....if the music wasn't good, we wouldn't still be here". RIP Steve.
One of the best Def Leppard's song's ever! Should have been a #!1 hit from them! They should re-lease it! Awesome tune! I love it! One of my favorites from them!
Def leppard are still rock gods and love and affection is a beautiful song from the hysteria album and another one of my favourite Def leppard song s Nd I play it full belt Joe vocals are fantastic and the guitar riffs are amazing wish I knew who plays them
Beautiful song and very nice video. It had to have taken ALOT of time and attention to detail to make this video (that's the true artistry of this). I have an actual tape from a radio morning show from Los Angeles (circa 1989) and this song was getting alot of airplay then. Too bad it was never recognized as a potential single...it would have soared up the charts. I too could listen to this tune all day and never get tired of it..it's just so melodic and well-done.
ambersalcove Don't worrie buddy, I'm 44 and I know Def leppard well. U learn at your own pace and enjoy whatever the fuck you want! I'm glad to see its Def leppard and not Brittany Spears haha
Hysteria was a big album. Each of the songs took turns being my favorite. This recording is better than a ballad and mellow rock. I'll never forget it.
It's my favorite on the album along with Run Riot and Gods Of War. Joe himself commented in an interview that he doesn't like to sing this song because of the high tones, but Steve loved it.
To this day I never understood why they didn't release this as a single?? Extremely underrated!!
you're right this song was so under rated even to date, never got any radio time.
I was just thinking the very same thing
The band didn't want to tour behind that song. The Hysteria tour lasted about 14 months, if Love & Affection was released as a single that meant the band was going to be out for another 4-5 months. Even almost 30 years later.... out of the blue, this song kicks on in my head.
This is one of the best songs on Hysteria.
ComicBookSyndicate YES...one of the BEST

Yes they're #1
This was Steve's favorite song on this cd. I can't believe it never was released as a single. Steve's solo in the middle of the song is chilling.
