I worked construction once and had a rough, crusty old superintendent that would not let us install a certain section of pipe. Bluebirds had made a nest in the pipe and although it was hard scheduling around the missing section, he finally let us install it after he was sure the bluebirds were gone.

I have fostered Bluebirds for nearly 50 years and made and shared boxes with family members. I can say I have contributed to the Bluebird population here in Central North Carolina. I have experienced joy and satisfaction in my relationship with this unique little creature. They are indeed SPECIAL

Hi, I am also in Central NC. I have a question, this is our first time with a blue bird box(on a pole and away from trees) and I have been watching both male and female do their job and I am so loving this. I think the babies are preparing to flee but two things I have noticed, 1. that the male seems to not be around these past few days and the mama is feeding and cleaning the box on her own...where would the male be? and 2. I have noticed a black snake hanging about 2 feet from the pole on the ground. Is there anything I can do and also I am hoping the male hasn't been killed some short time ago, he's been very active but now I haven't seen him at all. Thanks in advance if you can help in any way.

@@justdi3347 I built a nest a month ago and now they gave birth to 5 babies. Try spreading the 'Snake away' gravels in your property to avoid snakes. you can buy it from home depot. I do notice the female mom more than the dad.

I know exactly what you mean. I used to watch the birds my grandma attracted by putting out multiple types of feeders and multiple types of feed. I so miss those days watching the birds with my grandma from her back porch. I can't wait to have my own grandkids to teach about the birds too. My neighbor has feeders out and I donated one cuz she has a better place to attract them. She has a pair of finches that nest every year by her front window. I'm gonna have to get her a bluebird box so she can house some pretty little bluebirds too. It brings both of us a lot of joy to watch the birds. As well as help our native birds. 💙💛

Same here! I feed them from Costco 5 lbs unsalted peanut (in shell) bags every day. As I throw the peanuts on the floor in my backyard, they swoop down from nearby trees as if they were waiting for it! Ppl who visit me always ask me whether bluebirds still come and I tell them they do! Some of these visitors are from 10+ years ago! And months later, I find some peanuts 'hidden' all across the backyard :-)

We have a pair on their second round of babies this year. I love when they finally bring the babies up on the deck to teach them about the shelled sunflower feeder I always keep full for the birds. We get a nice up close view of the new babies. We also have a water dish hanging in the rail and get to watch the babies taking a bath. Such enjoyment from these beauties.

It's amazing to watch how they prepare and feed their young . I have also seen the male feed the female during this . I put out food for them next to the fence near their box. Every morning they come to the fence looking at me and wanting to be fed. They are smart, and no other bird is allowed near their box. Very protective.

I have had bluebird boxes in my back yard for nearly 20 years. Prior to this year I have only had bluebirds visit my boxes twice but opting to build a nest somewhere else apparently. I got discouraged but got permission to mount boxes at a park about 10 miles from my house. Last year the two boxes produced two broods each for a total of 19 chicks. So far this year both of those nest boxes have nests in them again. And to my surprise I have finally been rewarded as a pair took to one of my boxes in my yard. This afternoon there were 3 eggs and I spotted mom and dad close by as I was checking the box. I don't want to count my chicks before they are hatched but excited to finally get a nesting pair. Now to monitor, keep them as safe as possible, and hope that this will be the beginning of multiple clutches this year and for years to come.

I am in south Louisiana and have had bluebirds for about 5 years. They come back every year now. They are very protective of their domain. The squirrels don't have a chance around their nests. They run across my cedar fence when they see the bluebirds. It is hilarious to watch the squirrels try to get away. I love my bluebirds. They do get fairly close to me (50ft) and I will make little squeaky bird noises and they seem to like it. Thanks for the video Danielle

Excellent video. Thank you . I put Vick’s vapor rub on the post to discourage the little predators like chippys and snakes. If the smell doesn’t discourage them the sticky stuff does. You can add a little cayenne pepper as well. When a mammal cleans up they will get a taste of hot pepper. Works well with squirrels too.

I put up some boxes in January 2022 and within a couple of weeks already had a couple of Western bluebirds moving in. They had 4 male offspring (1 died, found him in the nest) that often appear on my water bowl cam (I've posted many videos of various local birds in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Palo Alto. Bluebirds are definitely my favorite birds. They appear to maintain close family ties until they are ready to spread out. I'm hoping all 4 of my boxes will be used next year. They are all constructed out of con heart redwood so they should last 20 years easily.

We just peeked into one of our boxes and found a dead bluebird. Earlier, the same box had a chickadee nest Dang house sparrows murdered that one too. I'd pull the box, but I want them away from the other boxes. Hubby takes their eggs, a couple at a time, and freezes them before returning them to the box. It keeps them sitting longer and hopefully reduces the population

I have learned this year how territorial blue birds are .I've seen new broods come and go and then there's only the parents or the lucky owners of the nearest blue bird house to where I feed them on my deck .
I'm seeing them get a lot busier lately carrying extra meal worms to the little ones. I look forward to seeing the little blues trying to get someone to feed them standing in a bowl full of meal worms haha . And then finally figuring it out and watching them use their new wings to dart around like dive bombers .
I'm ready for them this year.
Also more importantly I learned to moisten the worms and add bird vitamins to them because plain dried meal worms are lacking in nutrients and are calcium depleting .

Great video. We have several nest boxes placed around our little ranch on the edge of the Colorado San Juans. They attract the Mountain Bluebirds and we enjoy watching them all decide which box to nest in and also all the fledglings which hang out around the house and gardens. We also have the shelf nesting Say's Phoebes which have a special shelf up under the eves of the house where they like to nest. Both of these species of birds are spectacular fliers as you watch them pick insects out of the air. You must be prepared to prevent the invasive and unprotected English House Sparrow from invading their nests or attacking the adults.

This was such a nice video about bluebirds. I was lucky enough to attract bluebirds and could see & hear the babies as I would watch from a distance. Heartbreakingly, the bluebird nest was raided overnight, the door latch was somehow slipped open which in turn allowed the door to be opened. I was devastated. I did manage to close the door and saw that the bluebirds are starting to return to their nest. I’m going to try and put weatherproof duck tape over the latch as it’s something I thing I can do quickly and not scare the bluebirds. I know this is only a temporary fix, but need to do something to help make the bluebird box safer for this season, until I can make a more secure fix in the fall. If anyone has any other thoughts for now, would be appreciated but my window to make this repair seems limited as to when I can do this.

Awe, so sorry to hear about your bluebirds. It may have been a racoon or squirrel that got into your bluebird house. We have ours up on a pole with a metal squirrel baffle about 1 foot or so below the house. Sometimes we have to shoot nuisance racoons because there are not enough predators to keep them in check.

No, they will use the same nest again for a second or third brood because it saves them the effort/energy of rebuilding. We do clean out the bluebird house at the end of the season, before winter comes, so it's ready to go next spring for them though. You could also leave it for the winter and wait to clean it out in early spring, before March I would say.

I just noticed that they are nesting in our birdhouse. I can’t wait to see them grow.
Is there anything I can do to prevent predators from climbing up? The bird House is on a 3 x 3 post.

snakes and raccoons can easily climb a wood post. Ideally boxes should be mounted on a slick metal pole with a raccoon size baffle on the pole under the box. It's hard to change things for this nesting but you can change the mounting after they fledge.

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately I found what I believe to be the male blue bird dead in the blue bird house this week. Any idea what could have cause this? Google suggests it could have been a house sparrow. We did have baby blue birds last year, but no eggs this year. Will a new couple take over this house now and try for this year, its been cleaned?

Blue birds are just as brave as mocking birds. Will fight bigger birds. Seen this happen to acorn woodpeckers which most most birds are afraid to fight due to their
    strong pecking ability.

I have a question. Bluebirds can stay around PA all year.
Is there a specific type of nesting box that would give then a place to winter over?
Or will they stay in a regular bluebird house?

if they need a roosting that is out of the weather they can use a nest box or you can build/buy a roosting box. plans are available. just do a search.

Believe it or not, they STAY. In my experience, they are elusive during the winter, but if you pay attention and listen, they're still with us in winter, at least in the Ohio valley. I was even delighted and surprised to see a pair in town during the winter of 2018-19. If you know what to listen for, you'll more often hear their distinctive voice, rather than see them, even in winter. True Americans!

Is there anything else i can do to attract them? They have found my boxes, I’ve seen them check them out. It is now mid-February, when do they nest?

Just some hard-earned advice... we live on 2.5 acres and had one bluebird house, so I put up a couple more thinking I would have more bluebirds. Unfortunately it brought wrens into my yard and they went into the existing bluebird house and poked holes in the eggs because they see them as competition. You don't want too many houses in a small area like 1 acre. Maybe 2 at most. We now have 1 in the front yard in a clearing, seperated by woods, then another way in the back part of the property in another clearing. They are kind of shy birds, and don't like to be crowded and by other birds, at least in my (unfortunate) experience. I cannot get rid of the wrens in my yard now and fear they will crowd out the bluebirds one day. Maybe your area is different, however, as I have seen people have multiple bluebird houses close together... just giving you a heads up to keep an eye out. Good luck!

In the UK, my birdhouse raised three lot's of blue tits, until builders threw the thing on the ground, and smashed it. I've only now manage to build a new one after a few years of doing other stuff and coping with my illness.
