  • Three words: Duck Harbor Campground.
    You can backpack in Acadia National Park? Yes, you can. Or, you can bring some cartfuls of gear onto the mailboat out to the island and make it more of a camping experience :) Whatever way you decide to experience it, camping on the Maine island of Isle Au Haut is an incredible experience. There are only 5 campsites in the Duck Harbor Campground, and they fill up within minutes when the reservations open. Yikes! The mailboat runs only a few months of the year as well. So how did I get here? I obsessively refreshed the recreation.gov webpage until I saw the amazing "A" appear (available) for a day that worked for me. YAY. And I got campsite five! ...the one with the private shore path and amazing views. Happy sigh. One of the coolest experiences! If you have any flexibility in your vacation or adventure plans, I highly recommend checking the site for cancelations starting 10 days out from when you'll be in the area. Otherwise, just taking the mailboat out to Duck Harbor for days hiking is also very cool (or just a boat ride is lovely as well, it's all so beautiful).
    Thanks for subscribing and being a part of my journey! Means a lot to me.

    50 years ago my dad would beach his boat and we would set up camp. My uncle Charlie Nevels was a lobsterman and he would pull some traps on the ride over. I remember hating cereal with canned milk.

    Duck Harbor looks very beautiful. The views look amazing. Maine is such a wonderful place to visit. I am glad that you had an area to put your tent off the ground. There was lots to explore. It didn't appear that there were many people around, which would have made it very quiet. I hope that you had a nice time exploring. It is hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. I hope that you have had a great summer. Thank you for bringing us along.

      It was so nice to have the Shelter as part of the campsite, I do love that about New England backcountry sites ♥️ the island is big enough to feel like you have it to yourself, even with the day hikers there, and once the last mailboat left with those folks, it was magically quiet 🤩

    Not sure if you Linda Greenlaw but she was a sword fisher and portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in the movie "The Perfect Storm" She is a life long resident and still does tours.

      @@tinwenwalks Yeah she was on the TV show "Deadliest Catch" as well. "Greenlaw was the captain of the Hannah Boden in October 1991 when Andrea Gail sank in the Atlantic in the 1991 Perfect Storm. Greenlaw's efforts to warn the Andrea Gail about the impending storm were portrayed in Sebastian Junger's 1997 book The Perfect Storm and in the movie version, in which she was played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Junger called Greenlaw not just the only female swordfishing captain, but "one of the best captains, period, on the entire East Coast."
      In 1997, Greenlaw settled in Isle au Haut, and bought a lobster boat, the 35-foot Mattie Belle.[2]

      @@tinwenwalks Can you imagine? Good Lord... "Being a woman hasn't been a big deal. I never anticipated problems stemming from being female, and never encountered any. I have been surprised, even embarrassed, by the number of people who are genuinely amazed that a woman might be capable of running a fishing boat." As if it's not possible. She is also a prolific writer.

    • @tinwenwalks
      @tinwenwalks  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching! You can stop at Isle Au Haut town and they have some grassy areas/beach areas (some private). Riding the mailboat all the way out, there is an area in Duck Harbor that is for day use/public use, or you can hike along the trails and lay out anywhere for the day, Deep Cove (a nice walk on Western Head road) was a pretty popular spot for day users who were just relaxing out there. I hope you have a great time this trip!!!
