Back in the 80's, we all laid down on the dance floor, as soon as he sang that line, " down, down, down"...
Only to jump back up once the beat started again--- it was a blast!!
Ridiculous song, but it's a blast for dancing!
This was great. Some people don't get the B52's but, you got it instantly!
It's called performance art.
What a fantastic fun rabbit hole of contemporary punk!
The two girls singing was inspired by Yoko Ono‘s type of singing and John Lennon absolutely loved this song!!!
It’s definitely inspired by 50s rockabilly, but also it has that 80s silliness and catchiness that is great to dance to.
In 1979, my clock radio went off, but instead of waking fully, I ended up with a crazy dream. Moments later, I woke to this song. Explains that dream!
I love this unique band new wave then its the. Best
Surfer guitar riffs and wild vocals. Dance floor filled to capacity. Everybody's doin' the Mashed Potato, the Pony, Fruggin' all of that. Danced till I dropped. Vocal acrobatics are their specialty. Try Private Idaho or Mesopotamia.
You crackin' up like that means you get it :). B-52s are like '50s & '60s UFO, Monster, and Beach Party b-roll movies rolled into a band.
I remember hearing this in the early 80s I was never the same love the B52 They rock
Even us punk rockers loved B-52's .. such big hair! check Roam for amazing harmony and a good riff
I think with certain songs it is nearly impossible to appreciate just how new and fresh they felt. Those moments when you hear something that has never been heard before. This album was one of those moments. When new wave and punk hit, there were several of those moments.
If you're looking for a great old SNL sketch, check out Gilda's Candy Slice, a spoof of Patti Smith.
The harmonies of Cindy and Kate are some of the best ever in pop music - Roam - Deadbeat Club
Also, a great song for Cindy: Give Me Back My Man.
Love Shack would probably be a better introduction to B52s. This group was unlike anything before. They actually go back to the late 70s. They got the attention of John Lennon of the Beatles,, who loved experimental music. Also, the wailing from the females in this group was like sounds made by John's wife, Yoko, several years before B52s hit the scene. I believe Yoko sang with this group in the 80s.
Phenomenal, band 🍃 you must search out their late 70’s early 80’s live club performances. Every song is brilliant. I had the opportunity to see them live in 1980. If you didn’t know how to dance or even like to dance, seeing them live in a club. Ohhh my you will dance 🍃
This is quite the rabbit hole. Some songs will be more mainstream than others. Earlier B's are super quirky like Rock Lobster. Anything off of Cosmic Thing will be more mainstream. I've seen this band live more times than I can count. They are musical giants, but don't ever expect that the lyrics wont be silly or quirky or that it wont be a big ol party. I know of only ONE B-52s song that is serious. That would be Ain't It A Shame. Beautiful song too. Me personally, I wish you'd react to Big Bird live from Germany next. After that, it depends on what you want first..quirky early B-52s or more polished, "mature" B-52s. Something to keep in mind with early. B's, there was no bassist. If you hear bass it is Kate Pierson (keyboards, yellow shirt) simultaneously dropping basslines, keys and complex vocal harmonies.
Way back in the 70s, when the punk scene first started, these guys and the cramps kind of split off from the rest. Both had a rock-a-billy influence mixed with a late night sci-fi monster movie sound lol... the b-52s used less rock a billy and added some surf influence... Great bands... but you have to be in the mood lol.. Great 80s dance floor memories.. Great reaction. Thank you 😊
Such a fun song. Loved your reaction! They have a lot of great songs. I suggest you check out "Private Idaho".
Not deathless Art, just pure unadulterated silliness. If a DJ back in the 80's wanted to fill the dance floor, this was played. I know; I was there.
Private Idaho, Mesopotamia, Planet Claire, and, for sure, Dance This Mess Around are essential B-52's tracks.
Cool reaction.
You'll totally dig
"Private Idaho" and
"Planet Claire"
Peace Out 😊✌️
Yeah the B-52s were a whole thing unto themselves.
Nobody did what they did.
Their songs tend to be influenced by 50's Sci-Fi and Surf music. But they created their own sub-genre within the New Wave scene. 🤙😎
Great reaction Bizmatik! My love for this band is endless. Their concerts were the most fun! They are from Athens GA and have been together forever. I love Stroblight, planet Claire, 52 Girls, Dance this Mess Around and so many more! I would love to see you react to more❤
She sings like Yoko Ono with those animal noises. John Lennon and Yoko actually got really excited when this came out and it inspired John to start making music again before his death
Great reaction, loved this song for over forty years it's just pure madness, glad you liked it!
all these fine people met and began their band when they were students at The University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia....
The song that put them on the map... It had mixed reviews because of the weirdness but it was a intricate change of music and a genre
Bonus points for the live version Biz
This was super fun to dance to in the 80s we used to do the dead cockroach to it so much fun times and memories
New wave punk!
Great party music "dance this mess around" and "planet Clair " "private Idaho " good times fun tunes
The Lobster is a great, dark satire. I think Cindy is making the sound of a dolphin. This was the s**t back then and still rocks.
Hahaha hahaha. Hey bro!!! I saw them live. Amazing!!!!
Damn what a great time to be alive. Great time in history
True that.
Wig is one of my favorite B52s song, Nude Beach is really good too
It's just your typical day at the beach song. Rock lobsters under the pier. Boys and bikinis. Girls and surfboards. Then some of the ocean life you may encounter
The girls' mics are running a little hot (loud). Normally, Fred is the foreground vocal for this song, and they're singing back up. But yeah, it was a crazy dance party song in the 80s
Here comes the bikini whale! I wish the mix on this was better, but you got the gist. Such a fun band. And they all wrote their own parts.
the real b52's loveshack was to commercial
They're from Atlanta 😊. Probably way before your time 😂 *Dance This Mess Around 🤟
I thought they were from Athens GA.
They had so many great tunes. You should try Roam, Dance this Mess Around, Planet Claire, Love Shack...Every time they came on at the clubs the dance floor filled up.
It's a mix of New Wave and Surfer.
The girls convinced him to do this :)
I'm curious which SNL sketch. In late 90's I saw Maya Rudolph perform with a band called the Rentals. She's great
Just a fun goofy song to take you away from all of today's craziness.
Danced to them Grand central San Bernardino back in the dsy.
Many interesting bands today and entertaining reactions. First: yes many fish make noises but not all. A few in fact even communicate with sounds For lobsters I am not sure. Otis Redding, 10cc, and B-52s are all three worth spend some time on. For B-52s you got it right: skilful people making stupid songs similar to nothing else. "Planet Claire" (with video 4:38 long) is in all respects weird. "Love Shack" is happy party music á la the 80s.
I love the live version but the sound is so much better on the recorded version IMO..
Some really good songs by them:
52 Girls
Private Idaho
Planet Claire
Strobe Light
Love Shack
Roam
Great reaction!!!
Thank you!! 😁
Great reaction Biz!! Give Love Shack from the B52's a listen. I think you will like it even better than this one. I told a friend a while back that I knew I was losing it, because I was beginning to actually like the B52's music. I am very concerned that I might start listening to more Frank Zappa. Just kidding, I like Franks music, but it is very different.
Just a party out get crazy song...nothing more....and does it's job...heh heh
Nothing wrong with having fun
it's all for fun !!!
I the 80s i was in my 20s imagine!
Party on garth
Mesopotamia is a great song from sound that era.
I don’t always drop acid but when I do, the B52s shall be blasted at some point.
Planet Mars
Check out B-52's " Planet Claire "!!!
My man. They got you so high you’re asking if fish make noise…
You should do Miley Cyrus covering Metallica, with Metallica, on Howard stern
B-52's/Planet Claire audio version
70s beach party band.
❤️❤️❤️
Love Shack baby 👍
Yoko was an influence on the gals
Funplex is a great choice
I know catfish scream...it's odd. 😎😎
5:25 Yoko Ono copied her
I've always loved this band and this song. And they ARE hilarious, that's part of the point: having fun, partying, and not taking yourself too seriously. But this particular video sucks balls. Sorry 🙂 There are better versions both in terms of sound quality and video quality. BTW I recently heard this song inspired John Lennon to record what turned out to be his final album.
