Surprisingly, his first Presidential vote was for James Buchanan. He probably regretted that one lol. Thanks again for the content!
This is one of your best videos. I remember my father speaking of what a great man Ike was. Thanks for this narrative of Ike’s life. We all must remember he was a man of his times. It would not have been easy to become involved in conflicts in the 50s. People were exhausted with war. The civil rights movement was in its infancy and he did the best a man of his generation could do. Nuance is necessary when dealing with historical figures. Ike was a good man. Just before running for a second term, he suffered a massive heart attack and was confined to a wheelchair his doctors recommended he shouldn't run.... Integrity lies in having humility in victory, and not shunting defeat. Accepting responsibility for ones actions is paramount to being a person of Merit, and Eisenhower definitely had merit.
I wrote my undergrad senior thesis on Ike's farewell address and why he railed so mightly against the MI Complex. Doing research in the presidential library in Abilene was probably the highlight of my collegiate career
The US had been providing arms, money , training and advisors to the French for their war in Indochina. One of my college profs was a young USAF pilot who flew C-119 transports out of Hanoi as a “ civilian contractor” in 1953-54.
[6:41] About being "utterly average" at university, but excelling later ~ I once had a chat with a shrink who put it in a particularly clear way: "There's a big difference between what makes a good MSc of Psychology and what makes a good therapist"... going to school is very different from dealing with real life ~ especially if the part of life you're dealing with is an actual battlefield... 😉👍
I thought I recognized the face of the guy next to Eisenhower at 2:48. It's the president of Brazil Juscelino Kubitschek, in 1956, the president who built Brasília. I just couldn't find if the photo was taken in the US or Brazil.
It's funny how there are different kinds of bravery. On one hand, you have McArthur, who is most definitely a brave man, if there ever was one. I've heard stories about how sometimes he wouldn't duck and cover during enemy fire, (bullets whizzing past his head) because he wanted to his troops to be awed by his bravery... And in the other hand, there's the kind of bravery that Harry Truman showed, in firing McArthur, knowing it would be his downfall, but knowing it was the right decision, as McArthur showed an eagerness to reuse Atomic weapons... I find Truman's bravery, so much more honorable... His willingness to take responsibility, despite it be good or bad news, is something McArthur would almost never do.
I've heard it said by some that the US highway system is more of an engineering marvel than the Roman roads and will likely be seen as such by whoever comes next. I don't know enough about engineering to speak to the accuracy of that but I have heard more than one engineer say it.

Ike was brilliant when it came to logistics and how it may be used in strategy. The surname Eisenhower means "iron worker" in German like someone shaped metal into useful tools. Education rank plays little in life, I've know many an ivy league grad who'd no common sense let alone rational, while at the same time people who've achieved well and I'd consider brilliant who faired far worse in lesser institutes. Dam, Mamie was a beautiful lady. Yes wartime grade was different than peacetime grade, even among the enlisted, Pop was second grade tech - above staff Sgt under first - during the war but T/3 regular - Tech Sgt.
I think part of it is that Ike, much like Theodore Roosevelt, has a great amount of respect from americans of any lean, because he was an intensely principled man. Even if you don't necessarily agree with him on a single idea, you can respect that he was an idealogue of the most pure variety. It took a strong conviction to argue against the military industrial complex, as a military man, because he understood the damage it would cause. He is, if anything, second to only George Washington in terms of "presidents whose closing arguments were ignored for political expediency". .0
There are 3 types of republicans Eisenhower republicans which are socially liberal and centrist economically. Reagan republicans that are missed the conservative socially and economically very conservative, and trump republicans that are very conservative on everything! I love Eisenhower my favorite president by far! And I’m a huge democrat!
I agree that Ike should have used The Presidency more as a "bully pulpit". However, there were three things, which I think prevented him from doing that. 1) He preferred to act as non-partisan as possible and didn't want to take risks, in terms of personal popularity. 2) He was concerned of governing. Going too far on issues, such as Civil Rights, might offend the Conservative Coalition of Taft Republicans and Dixiecrats. 3) The President shouldn't be "out in front", on the issues. He's got other members of the Administration, such as Nixon and Dulles, who could be "the point man", in the event of a program failure..thus, clearing Eisenhower of critism.
One of my favorite presidents of the last 100 years, but he is by far from perfect. Some of the things I hate about our foreign policy are from him. As I am learning and growing older I kinda see where he was coming from. You do not necessarily need to be full Paton all the time. some times you have to do grimy things in order to avoid a big war. It is a decision I do not envy
Just because I am a Truman fan, Truman was also the last President without a college degree. Nixon was not my favorite, but he was not the worst. Nixon was not stupid.
I take issue with the criticism of Eisenhower's response to the French request for aid in Indochina. He set out very clear rules and expectations which were not met and he decisively decided not to get involved as a result.
Is the middle of nowhere Louisiana That's a fact. I was stationed at Polk soon to be Johnson gor 3 hot and swampy years. Good times and bad times there.

Yes wartime grade was different than peacetime grade, even among the enlisted, Pop was second grade tech - above staff Sgt under first - during the war but T/3 regular - Tech Sgt.
You should do a tier list ranking of countries' performances in WW2 :)
IKE! AAAAH! SAVIOR OF THE UNIVERSE!!
BTW, My great grandmother was born exactly 41 years after Ike
40:15 interestingly Eisenhower later described the Suez Crisis as one of his biggest foreign policy regrets.
Crazy I think that exercise in Louisiana is still being done in ft Polk when I was in the Marines we trained with them for their big events
Looked it up it is!
I live about 11 min from Dwight’s birthplace.
Pretty cool area.
He is, if anything, second to only George Washington in terms of "presidents whose closing arguments were ignored for political expediency".
.0
He also missed Eisenhower's great accomplishment of the interstate highway system.
It was mentioned though I believe it's during the part that got muted.
I just looked it up. That Duvall mini series? "Ike"
Hey Chris, maybe it’s just on my end, but yesterday and today’s videos seemed a little quieter than normal.
He's like George Bailey, staying in Bedford Falls so his brother can go to school.
There had been a tradition among soldiers that they should NOT vote that vanished in the 1970s.
To foster progress in human achievement and to enhance liberty dignity and integrity among people and among nations.
Any good biographies on Eisenhower?
You should react to his biographics video on MacArthur, who is my personal general of ww2, given my Filipino heritage.
Can you do a vídeo about Brazil history !!??
General Lees influence on him was very powerful
you mind elaborating?
@@theawesomeman9821 he seemed to mirror Lees style of leadership. He was very vocal about his admiration for him. He kept his portrait in the Oval Office
Great video, I learned a kot both from this and you.
IMO, Watergate was the least of Nixon's awful presidential policies, but I won't go into that.
Where did you get the Glasgow rangers too from?
I bought it at Ibrox when I was in Glasgow last summer.
Very nice, I’m not a rangers fan but I’m really love you embracing your Scottish heritage, keep up the great content
Ike was overall a great president, but he really messed up with how he handled the Suiz affair
Got your biographics uniform on I see.
If the invasion of Japan happened then General MacArthur would’ve been promoted to General of the Armies
34:10-"there's some wisdom in what we just heard"
not exactly, lol
Was the muted section intentional or accidental at 33:25-34:02?
It’s a copyright issue with licensed music. UA-cam probably muted the music.
great video u should whatch the biography on emperor Domitian, a very intresting storry
I don’t think Zachary Taylor was registered to vote either
did you react to this video sped up? The guy narrating (Simon I think) sounds like he's talking super fast
I like IKE 🎶- Mr Beat
No mention of the Interstate Highway System?
It was mentioned in this video.
@@VloggingThroughHistory You're right. It was just after the muted part which was a distraction, so I missed it. But even a wrong comment helps your algorithm, so I don't feel too bad. 😉
I think the term avarage is so frowned upon and also being lowest in your class. You still managed to achive what you were set out to do.... For an example here in sweden taking the theory driving test a person might get full pot and that is 70/70, but might still be a worse driver than the person that just passed with 52/70.
both are deemed roadworthy regardless of their score just that they got above 52
40:58 didn't Eisenhower see over Iran's democracy cut down by a sort of autocracy.
What a crazy life
What's up with the audio cut out in the prosperity for all segment
UA-cam apparently muted some licensed music.
Is it just me or is the camera FPS exceptionally low on this one?
