- Tactics in Football Manager 2024 is built around player roles, and this is the first in a planned series of videos aimed at beginners explaining the different roles that you could choose for your players as you deploy them on the pitch. This one looks at your central defenders, explaining the libero, ball playing defender, wide centreback, no nonsense centreback, and the good old central defender.

Pro tip from last year’s top performing meta tactics that still work this year. Ballplaying cb, dribble more, shoot less. Even if they have no dribbling. Even if they have average passing (set team instructions to much shorter or shorter and your playmakers individually to direct). They will take advantage of open space without trying to skin the whole opposition, and be more proactive passers without being reckless (in my experience). If you come up against good pressers or a 2 striker formation, get that half back in there to maintain the overload. Being too direct? I run cautious mentality WITH very direct/high tempo because it has slight time wasting enabled, you will create many chances while still controlling possession thanks to the occasional time wasting.
Great video as always, but you should have touched on defend vs cover vs stopper as well. I usually run one cover and one defend but that seems personal preference and personnel dependent
Awesome tweaks, those! Pinning this comment so that folks'll see it. And you're right, I did ignore the duties a bit - personally never run a stopper-cover combo unless I'm playing a weaker team with a single forward trying to jump onto clearances. Then I go stopper-cover and man-mark the guy

Wow, I've been playing FM for years and have gotten much better lately with videos like these. Thank you very much.
I'm thrilled they help!
Your FM Videos are all top-notch. Would love to see one on Role-Combinations , like which Midfield- / Winger- / Striker-Partnerships are working well together!
For sure! Now that I've got the concepts out of the way I'm going to try and use the time to highlight some fun role combinations in the next videos :)
Your channel is criminally under subscribed. Your videos are fantastic. I've been playing since Championship Manager and I still feel like I have learnt something from this video.
I've subscribed.
I'm thrilled to hear that, definitely my aim! :D
I'm loving this new channel!
Brilliant video, looking forward to the rest of this series
Thank you for the videos. They are really helpful.
Glad you like them!
Love these videos. Thank you for your work for the community
Glad you like them!
great video man! been playing football manager for a while and this really helped me understand the differences between the roles. Will watch the whole series now and you've won a subscriber! Keep up the good work :)
thrilled to have you aboard!
Top notch content man. No shame to them or anything but much more absorbable content than the big fm UA-camrs. The way you break things doesn’t and truly breaks each role down has done wonders for my understanding. Been playing since 2019 and learned a massive amount today. Cheers!
you are very, very welcome and I'm glad you find it useful!
Brilliant work man
thank you!
Would love to see tactics for lower semi professional teams. Keep up the good work
Neat idea! I mean, not all that much changes, you can theoretically make the same tactics work (except for complete forward, players need a certain CA to be able to play that role) but keeping it simple tends to work best. Adding it to my pipeline though!
Nice one once again! Thanks!
:D really glad you're liking my stuff!
Yes please! player roles are very important, I hope you will cover all of them, thank you!
You got it!
This is interesting.. BPD on 3 central defender tactic is more like wide centre back.. but Libero is more like DM..
BPD on 2 CD tactic is absolute CD while libero is more like CM-def...
but I always love half back... 😅😅 since they are more aggresive to mark in the back than any CD role... 😅😅
thank you, your videos are very good, keep it up.
Thanks, will do!
I have learnt so much from these quality videos. I cannot believe you have so few videos up yet they are all such quality, you really hit the ground running. Did you have an earlier channel?
Thank you!! And nope, this is my first and only
great content as always! I think shorter, more specialized videos are more user friendly as it is easier to keep focused on the content and gives more depth.
I think you're probably right! I'm a bit biased toward longer form since I never click a vid under 10m myself, but this kinda length going into detail on a couple of key bits of content feels good. Thank you for the feedback :)
I want to mix 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations, so I am waiting for your analysis of attacking midfielders roles. Thanks for your work!
Hahah, I'll work on getting them out asap then!
keep it going,i want to understand other position also.. thank you
Thank you, I will!
I normally make the stopper defender into a no nonsense defender as it avoids - hard tackling stops lots of yellows
Can confirm that werewolves make things much more exciting in FM! xD
