Great review, Hansen. Watching your video from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺. You have certainly helped me to decide which SUVs to go for and it will be the XC40 T5 R Design.
YAAAAYY!!! I’m so excited I came across your page!!!! FIRST let me say, this was a GREAT review, best I’ve seen for the XC40!!! So, I’ve had my Toyota Camry (brand new when I got it) since 2010, so I’m very much overdue for an upgrade. And part of the reason I haven’t upgraded yet is that I haven’t come across anything that I’ve really just loved and wanted to have, in both sedan and suv. With having my Camry for so long I do know I really want something that is different and sleek to the eye but also something that isn’t going to be ridiculously priced because this will be my everyday vehicle. I had narrowed my search down to two smaller SUV’s, the Volvo XC40 (possibly XC60 but most likely the XC40) and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. I fell in love with the look of the exterior and interior of the Stelvio immediately and I was set on getting that suv!!! BUT, the more I researched and the more reading I did about the Stelvio the more I was not happy with this suv. It’s reliably, maintenance, and a few other things are some of the first things I think about when I purchase a new vehicle. Also, I was not aware until very recently that Fiat Chrysler owned the Alfa Romeo brand. That’s a no go 🙅🏻♀️ for me. Now, I’m pretty much obsessed with the XC40 and I’m 99.98% sure it’s the suv I’m going to buy! I do always keep my eye out for a sedan or suv that stands out and has a different look than others on the road but I don’t think I’m going to find anything that draws my attention more than the look of this particular suv! For now anyway!! Thanks for the great review because I haven’t done a test drive yet and it was great to really see the inside in more depth than what is on the Volvo website!!!
Bought it for 3 months. Love it. No problem with the gearshift at all , you'll get used to it in no time. Only thing bothered me was the Start/Stop engine which needed to be manually shut off every time.
My XC40, if you switch it off in the infotainment, will remember it, leaving it always off. Also, they updated the engine starter software making autostart less noticeable. It's the least annoying autostart I've experienced. It's actually pretty smooth so I leave it on!
Omg, this car is absolutely beautiful and so much cheaper than other luxury Europeans. This is my absolute dream car when I come into the money. For now I’ll still deal with my ‘01 Civic :/
I bought a white one with red leather interior inscription and i effin love the car. Put 30k miles on it in 6 months and still going strong. My only complaint is that it takes premium fuel but most luxury cars do so it is what it is. Averaging like 27 mpg mostly highway miles at 80mph avg
Good review. Just bought a 2023 XC40 with AWD. It has the more powerful engine. I'm not too tech savvy, but I really like the vehicle. Wish the owner's manual was paper, instead of digital. The dealer added the 360 degree camera - which is a godsend - to my mid, i.e. Plus, trim level. However, I'm not looking forward to premium gas refueling.
You guys are great... when you're in Carlisle (if there is a Carlisle this year) swing by the Volvo Dealer in Mechanicsburg and I'll be glad to let you take any of our cars for a spin and quick review. With the heated seats, don't forget that there is a climate setting to let the heated seats and wheel turn on automatically to the level you want when it's cold. I very rarely have to use the touch screen to adjust it. Also, none of the XC40s are build in China... they are built in Belgium. I find the shifter to offer really positive control and have fewer mis shifts with the XC40 than the other lines. Frankly if there isn't a clutch, I don't care much how it goes into gear =-D 4C is available actually. I have only ordered one in with it and that was last year, but it's still on the options list for R design and Inscription. (last year it was available across the board)
@@ShiftingLanes No surprise, the V60 is my absolute favorite in our lineup. They are special order only in this region as we aren't allocated any due to them being front wheel drive (other than the T8). I have V60 Cross Countries though! I just delivered one last week that was produced just before the virus shut everything down.
I drove this once in a rental and loved it. Beautiful car. Definitely feels luxury. Down for me was the touch screen was so hot when I’d first get in the car but that’s Florida summer for ya!
I get the heat.. but you know with this car you can cool it off or heat it up while sitting in the comfort of your home or in the mall. Every morning my car is set to turn the air on 15 mins before I leave the house.
@@brucemadu8535 There is bruce. You're paying less cause they use less gas due to their efficiency which is only possible on higher grade gas. It works out in your favour.
Bruce Madu yeah probably. Turbo motors require higher grade due but are more efficient than NA. Mazda with their high comp motors being an exception, but the reasoning is the same.
Absolutely love my XC40. I will only buy Volvos for the rest of my life. For me, safety is my biggest concern and I definitely feel safe in the 2019 40. Such a great car that feels so luxurious without the luxurious price tag!
Mine has 4C active chassey and addaptive suspension. It wasn't included by default, so you can add it if you want, at least in Europe, but id does make the ride comfortable, so the difference is there.

jazzbeau507 , no mate, it’s a Legacy Touring Wagon 2007 2.0 165hp. I don’t like suv’s, so I will never ever buy one. Your American, right? I’m from Belgium. Greetings.
Ursula Plona, Too bad. Subaru's are just "famous" for their reliability. My Legacy is from 2007, only had to replace a light bulb. Every 15.000 km service at the dealer.
The biggest gripe I have: the Volvo UX (user experience) of the infotainment software... It is the LEAST intuitive layout. It's smooth but man it's difficult to navigate the audio/input/scan controls for example.
Great video! Just a quick question regarding the pedals. I'm 5'10 and my shoe size is 11.5 (US). How do the gas and brake pedals feel? Do you feel or sense any discomfort? Does the middle console affect your driving by any chance? Thank you!
Mines a 2021 T3. Very pretty inside n out, engine isn't great though, bit rough but just about powerful enough. Not good on fuel. Anti collision braking is a nuisance though and you have to switch off every trip.
As a Mainland Chinese, I'm super proud to know Volvo is now owned by one of world's largest car makers based in our great nation of China. #MadeInChina2025 #BeltAndRoad 🇨🇳
Charlie_Willie When we ordered ours last summer ( here in UK) we asked about the active suspension but our dealer told us not to bother as it was no way as good as the system used on the XC60 & 90 as they are different. Hope this helps
I would like to ask for how much will cost me ownership of this car? Lets say after 100 000miles, how much cost me together all services as I follow service intervals. How many miles I can make, what is life expectancy of the engine?
Well it varies by location, but for an example, I would sell someone the 100k maintenance for around $2700... which includes all recommended maintenance, and if you wanted a 100k warranty it would probably run around $3300... so then factor in maybe 3 sets of tires, a few wiper blades, maybe a set or two of brakes depending on how you drive. Obviously some unknowns, but I think generally that is a realistic way to determine a real cost of ownership. As for longevity... as with most newer motors they do start to burn oil over 100k... it's more noticeable because of the 10k oil change interval, so on high mileage cars you may be adding oil between oil changes. If you're gonna run them a long time then I would work with your local dealer to pick out a car and put it into their loaner fleet and then buy it for a little discount as a CPO which would give a 10 year unlimited mile warranty for less than what a 100k new car extension warranty costs.
I’m so disappointed that this isn’t offered as a hybrid here. This is the vehicle I want, but I really want a hybrid so I’m now strongly considering the Toyota Rav 4.
A good review but I think a couple more important items could have been stated such as the service and warranty options, the Volvo On-Call, and the Polestar upgrade available to the T5. The Volvo SENSUS system also allows for many of the Volvo XC40 features to be voice activated/controlled. Now I get it, there have been so many reviews out on this Volvo XC40 and sure you can't hit all items but a good overview to get customers attention and point them in the direction of the dealerships. Keep up the good work.
Definitely, the BMW doesn't even look like a suv, it looks more like a big version of the previous 1 series, and it has a way older looking interior, and it's smaller. And the Lexus' preporsions are way off, it's like they tried to make it look like and suv without actually doing so. The Volvo wins in almost all ways
Justin Case : XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. Volvo bringing out e version of existing models every year for 7 years. This is their first. Hoping I can get a 3 year lease. There are 2 hybrid versions, too, including luxury.
About the shifter, I appreciate that you have to move it twice, seems like that would take care of any accidental hits on the shifter? Makes sense to me anyway. I'm OK with shift buttons as well, just get totally rid of the shifter. Thank you for the very nice review.
@@the_atomic_punk487 Having an xc40 myself i can say that you really get used to flicking it twice and it really just becomes second nature to do the double flick. I think it's an easy thing to pick on for people reviewing the cars but it's really not that bad.

When you said the infotainment system was a lot more responsive than earlier versions, which ones are you comparing to? I'm wondering because I want to know if the 2019 or 2018 versions of the XC40's infotainment system are going to feel sluggish.
This review is the best argument for buying a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Santa Fe has more power, more room, better ride, all the tech, and .... buttons! These all-touch interfaces for common operations are a big mistake; they are dangerous as they require too much driver attention. And you save a few thousand dollars as well. Full disclosure, awaiting delivery of my Santa Fe😮

The idea behind the double-bump gear change is to prevent accidental gear selection while utilizing the center console. I just leased this exact same color and interior. Except mine is a T4 & absolutely love this car!
I just brought home a new xc60. Love!
Frankly if there isn't a clutch, I don't care much how it goes into gear =-D
4C is available actually. I have only ordered one in with it and that was last year, but it's still on the options list for R design and Inscription. (last year it was available across the board)
Thanks Douglas! Would love to do a V60 review. Hoping it happens in August as rescheduled.
Great info here. Appreciate it!
XC40 2020 had 4c... but it now has been deleted on the 2021 order guide, so that could have caused some of the confusion.
Bought an XC60 R-Design - a real killer, best design, simply the best SUV
I drove this once in a rental and loved it. Beautiful car. Definitely feels luxury. Down for me was the touch screen was so hot when I’d first get in the car but that’s Florida summer for ya!
I get the heat.. but you know with this car you can cool it off or heat it up while sitting in the comfort of your home or in the mall. Every morning my car is set to turn the air on 15 mins before I leave the house.
Activate the roof sunscreen🇬🇧
I bought it and going to get it next week. D3 denim blue inscription.
I’m obsessed with mine. It’s perfect.
Me too!
Premium gas - nope, sorry, no need for that.
@@brucemadu8535 There is bruce. You're paying less cause they use less gas due to their efficiency which is only possible on higher grade gas. It works out in your favour.
chipchip well then 18% more efficient? cause that’s how much more premium is where i live. Doubt it.
Bruce Madu yeah probably. Turbo motors require higher grade due but are more efficient than NA. Mazda with their high comp motors being an exception, but the reasoning is the same.
Omg I yest drove one of these gorgeous XC40S when they first came out. I just wish I could afford one! I want one so bad!!
Very nice car! I also appreciate your smooth, comprehensive deoivery style
1st ive watched, very chill and likeable, ill check out more of the channel, would have liked a more thorough look at the back passenger area, but still good
Thanks for watching and the constructive criticism. I'll keep that in mind for future reviews!

Great video Hanson. I agree about your comment on the gear level and suggested replacement, what a fantastic practical car!
If i was in the market, this would be a top contender for sure !! 😍
I love it and I think your comments are very helpful and neutral. Thanks a lot!
Not too many vehicles look good in white but this one does!
I’m but a simple man. I’ll drive my Subaru till one of us parks permanently.
@gromit Do you have a Crosstrek?
jazzbeau507 , no mate, it’s a Legacy Touring Wagon 2007 2.0 165hp. I don’t like suv’s, so I will never ever buy one. Your American, right? I’m from Belgium. Greetings.
Trading in my Volvo XC60 for a Subaru. Purchased off the showroom floor. Felt great until problems started at 29,000. Never again!
Ursula Plona, Too bad. Subaru's are just "famous" for their reliability. My Legacy is from 2007, only had to replace a light bulb. Every 15.000 km service at the dealer.
@@Peace-xu8ps what kind ? Electrical/mechanical problems?
Just needs ventilated / cooled seats and I would get it
I have a t4 redesign fwd and I love it 😻 I don’t miss awd for everyday driving
The biggest gripe I have: the Volvo UX (user experience) of the infotainment software... It is the LEAST intuitive layout. It's smooth but man it's difficult to navigate the audio/input/scan controls for example.
Great video! Just a quick question regarding the pedals.
I'm 5'10 and my shoe size is 11.5 (US). How do the gas and brake pedals feel? Do you feel or sense any discomfort? Does the middle console affect your driving by any chance? Thank you!
Pedals are well spaced, console doesent get in the way at all, I'm 5'10
Well balanced review.
Also can they provide a Volvo trash bin liner for the centre console trash bin...clearly that is a very important feature of this car
I have had 3 Mazdas and I can tell you Volvo and Mazda are very much alike without the price tag
Mines a 2021 T3.
Very pretty inside n out, engine isn't great though, bit rough but just about powerful enough.
Not good on fuel. Anti collision braking is a nuisance though and you have to switch off every trip.
Every time he says "XC40" it sounds as if he's saying "sexy 40" and I'm very pleased.
As a Mainland Chinese, I'm super proud to know Volvo is now owned by one of world's largest car makers based in our great nation of China. #MadeInChina2025 #BeltAndRoad 🇨🇳
8:58 I'm 100% sure you can get the 4C active suspension option as an add-on
At the time of this filming it doesn’t look like it’s available for the US market.
Charlie_Willie When we ordered ours last summer ( here in UK) we asked about the active suspension but our dealer told us not to bother as it was no way as good as the system used on the XC60 & 90 as they are different. Hope this helps
It's available for R Design or Inscription.. last year it was available on Momentum as well. I ordered a car for a customer with it.
I am torn between Volvo XC40 and Mercedes GLB! Any recommendations?!
Volvo all the way,i tested both and too be honest they were very similar to drive but i just couldnt stop looking at the volvo
awesome review!! thank u!
I love love love my xc40
I’m so disappointed that this isn’t offered as a hybrid here. This is the vehicle I want, but I really want a hybrid so I’m now strongly considering the Toyota Rav 4.
2024 mild hybrid or full PHEV
A good review but I think a couple more important items could have been stated such as the service and warranty options, the Volvo On-Call, and the Polestar upgrade available to the T5. The Volvo SENSUS system also allows for many of the Volvo XC40 features to be voice activated/controlled. Now I get it, there have been so many reviews out on this Volvo XC40 and sure you can't hit all items but a good overview to get customers attention and point them in the direction of the dealerships. Keep up the good work.
3 choices: The Lexus UX, BMW X2, Volovo XC 40
Is the Volvo you're top choice?
Definitely, the BMW doesn't even look like a suv, it looks more like a big version of the previous 1 series, and it has a way older looking interior, and it's smaller. And the Lexus' preporsions are way off, it's like they tried to make it look like and suv without actually doing so. The Volvo wins in almost all ways
Great review man! 😎👍
My wife daily's one and these things are perfect for what she uses it for.
the interior is refreshing compared to a cluttered claustrophobic BMW or Merc
Thanks for the great review!
I'd be all over this if there was a dealer even remotely close and the repair costs are crazy I bet.
Very nice review
Glad you liked it
Thank you. I just bought one
I love the looks of this xc40, I would consider buying it after 5 years so I can get it cheap
But it new, the residual's are really strong on this car right now. Drive it with a warranty, lease it, then buy a car when you're older
Fantastic review
Excited to have pre-ordered a ReCharge.
Is this a hybrid?
Justin Case : XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. Volvo bringing out e version of existing models every year for 7 years. This is their first. Hoping I can get a 3 year lease. There are 2 hybrid versions, too, including luxury.
Can you get ventilated/cooled seats or only on xc60??
Since I don't need an AWD and I only have the underpowered engine option, this was a no brainer to me. Off my list.
About the shifter, I appreciate that you have to move it twice, seems like that would take care of any accidental hits on the shifter? Makes sense to me anyway. I'm OK with shift buttons as well, just get totally rid of the shifter. Thank you for the very nice review.
How about parallel parking?
@@the_atomic_punk487 Having an xc40 myself i can say that you really get used to flicking it twice and it really just becomes second nature to do the double flick. I think it's an easy thing to pick on for people reviewing the cars but it's really not that bad.
Booooo!!!
Ok .. 2021 be here sOon! New edition. Needs sO Much Good Colour s .. really.. makes it safe and want buy it . ColourS is so important! No army colour s . And hopefully no issues with recalls ! Otherwise it’s Dam niCe car to drive .. ✌️
I guess im the only one who feels the vertical orientation of the screen and vents disrupts any cars default horizontal orientation (e.g. dashboard being horizontal)
Justin Seah They do it just to be different. The whole car is boxy and looks top heavy. Most rave about it, I don’t like it. Guess it’s me.
Thank you for the great review--! How is the Pilot Assist? Does it really keep the vehicle centered in its lane? Thanks again
It centers the vehicle well and doesn’t have the ping pong effect that some earlier LKA systems have.
I love the Pilot Assist. I use it daily.
Genesis GV70: “hold my beer.”
When you said the infotainment system was a lot more responsive than earlier versions, which ones are you comparing to? I'm wondering because I want to know if the 2019 or 2018 versions of the XC40's infotainment system are going to feel sluggish.
I wish I cud put that new Volvo infotainment in my old s60R
This review is the best argument for buying a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Santa Fe has more power, more room, better ride, all the tech, and .... buttons! These all-touch interfaces for common operations are a big mistake; they are dangerous as they require too much driver attention. And you save a few thousand dollars as well. Full disclosure, awaiting delivery of my Santa Fe😮
Current owners: How quickly did you adjust to the full touch screen center console, particularly while driving? I'm coming from an old SUV with classic knobs, and even though I consider myself a techie, I'm not too sure how well I'd transition.
Excellent presentation, flawless
You cant put the t5 into 2wd?
This is a sweet car
