Thanks for your comment Dan! You are totally right- I did basically make a brush from the texture. In this case, I left it as a Smart Object and changed the size, position, and rotation each time, but that could also be achieved by saving the texture as a brush preset and playing with the parameters there as well for a similar result. On the second technique, it looks like you essentially created a brush that you can use in a random way.
