      I wish I would have never switched to the EOS R. I definitely wouldn’t have if I knew it would 6+ years waiting for third party lenses.
      I hate adapters and not everything works well with them or even gives you full focal length of your lens.
      Now I’m stuck with half EF glass which nobody wants and two RF lenses but can’t afford anything else for as a hobbyist.

    It may be that RF allows in-body lens corrections, whereas EF protocol does not.
    Most lens manufacturers are now relying on some post processing to deliver the smaller/faster/more flexible mirrorless designs we’ve come to expect (certainly Canon does).
    If Sigma was unable to turn on de-warping/vignette control in camera then their lenses would just end up looking bad, and would have limited use until the RAW was post processed. Sony’s open E mount does allow third parties to define processing.
    So Canon’s ‘kind offer’ of EF compatibility may be worthless in reality.

    I am annoyed that there is no 3rd party RF lens. I really love my R6 but sick of the canon RF prices. I have a few RF L glass but I have some EF glass and I just picked up a Sigma 120-300 2.8 Sport and it works amazing on my R6

    Lets face it, Canon shot themselves in the foot on this one. They waited so long to allow other lens manufacturers that even they (Sigma and Tamron) lost interest now. Also people tend to overlook the fact that when 3rd party manufacturers are trying to release a lens it takes a couple of years for them to do the research. So Tamron and Sigma probably just said "F!@# it, we'll turn our business to Sony and Nikon and everyone else. And you know what? I don't blame em!

    When I upgraded to the Canon R7, I had some problems with focus pulsing with my Sigma 150-600C and Tamron 100-400 Vi DC birding lenses, which I had to replace with the RF100-500. So I share the annoyance with the closed mount. That said, Canon's budget lenses are amazing at current prices e.g. the F11 primes, the RF 100-400, and the nifty fifty. As long as there is an adequate selection of budget glass, I am not sure it matters if it is branded Sigma or Tamron or Canon. And the L glass, while $$, is worth every penny if you can manage the price. My RF100-500 is lighter than the Sigma/Tamron lenses it replaced, the dual focus motors are accurate and responsive, the OIS works well with the R7 IBIS, and the image quality is spectacular. IMO, the protest may be overblown.

    I think what sigma and tamron are saying is that any rf glass they would make would not be any better than their ef glass with the adapter so why bother

  • @BslmUSA
    @BslmUSA 5 місяців тому

    It’s is useful if sigma/tamron can make lenses with RF physic mount with EF protocol, rather than RF auto focus and reducing the weight of lenses. One day if canon allows using RF auto focusing, so user can upgrade firmware to enable Rf auto focusing, doing so can attract a lot of canon users for buying EOS RF cameras , saving a lot money

    Having spent the last year or so dealing with the whole EF lens to RF camera adapter I would like to offer my opinion...
    You like the marketing of how great the RF camera is and all the new features - so you spend a lot of money and buy one. But wait, now you have to spend a few hundred dollars more to use an adapter to use the old EF lenses. By the way, some of those new camera features that enticed you to buy the camera - those only work with "select" RF mount lenses from Canon. Surprise!
    So you like the look and feel of the new RF lenses, right? They are light weight and have great imaging - since Canon has a monopoly on the RF mount lenses you have to pay whatever they ask for. Don't expect any bargains. Don't expect them to endorse any real competition.
    The whole "just buy an adapter" argument is throwing away a lot of the benefits that mirrorless cameras provide. It costs more money, disregards decades of lens improvements, and doesn't work with a lot of the fancy new camera features. The "upgrade" to mirrorless is severely hampered by clinging to EF lenses. It saves you money but but sacrifices features. Might be good to download the manual and see if there are any restrictions that you find disappointing.

    • @Ryomichi
      @Ryomichi 7 місяців тому

      There is not alot of benefits we throw away when using EF lens. Ef lens is longer with adapter, and no extra control ring, thats all I know. I dont see a problem spending extra on adapter when I own many EF lens. Maybe you could elaborate what features are missing?

    • @henrywede6442
      @henrywede6442 6 місяців тому

      @@Ryomichi The one that I remember was that focus stacking was limited to the new and most expensive lenses. I suspect that other focus related functions might have issues to - but I am too lazy to go through the manual.
      I was at the same place that you are, but now I would like to upgrade some of my EF lenses but I only have expensive options. Meanwhile I see wonderful options that are available in Nikon Z mount and Sony E mount lenses. Honestly, as long as the new functions that you are interested in are supported with EF lenses then you don't have a reason to change course. Looking through the manual might prevent some nasty surprises.

    • @Ryomichi
      @Ryomichi 6 місяців тому

      @@henrywede6442 I will agree that without 3rd party lens, we are missing on great alternative and even lens that Canon don't bother to make. With recent Canon Feb 2024 statement, I think some 3rd party manufacturers could start making RF lens with EF driver now, and update when Canon actually fully supports 3rd party. The only RF lens I have is 28mm pancake.

    It's not quite correct that any EF lens will work on an RF camera by using the Canon (or a 3rd party) EF-RF adapter. I have an EF version Samyang XP 10mm f/3.5 lens (which is manual focus but has the aperture controlled by the camera) which does not work. You can use a 3rd party dumb adapter which does not provide electrical connectivity, but then you cannot control the aperture. (It works fine on EF-M and Sony E-mount cameras using 3rd party adapters.)

    Sales have been shrinking for decades and the big guys want total control (the same thing happens with Nikon). Luckily for users, not for brands, there are millions of DSLRs and optics on the second-hand market; It will take years before that option is no longer valid.

The option with having the EF to RF adapter is right now the best option for 3rd party lenses. The only RF lenses I have are the 100-500, 600 f11 and the 24-240. None of these lenses are all that impressive. I know the 600 and the 24-240 are budget budget type lenses but still they aren’t that great. The 100-500 is a real disappointment. The 100-400 EF was just as good and not nearly as expensive. I only have the original EOS R and doubt that I will be buying another newer R body. I will stay with my EF glass and my 6DMKII and 7DMKII bodies with the nice EF glass I have. Maybe I should see if I can get a new 5DMKIV.

    "There are no restrictions" is meaningless. I have been a Nikon and Canon shooter since the film days. I would be shooting on Sony now, except that the use those horrible type A cards. The vendors have released EF lenses for decades. Those are not RF lenses. In my opinion, the way for a company to prosper is to make the customer prosper. Canon wants monopoly control to squeeze every possible penny out of their customer base. Canon wants only lenses that they have no intention to make, so they do not compete.
