Simon, I have been a photographer for about 50 years, even when I was younger teaching photography classes and equipment sales. However, I still enjoy watching even your basic videos. It never hurts to get a refresher for the things you have taken for granted over the years or haver forgotten. Thanks. Dude!
I'm right there with you...and my retention factor isn't what it used to be...these videos are great refreshers for what I have forgotten and great tutorials for things I don't know.
I love how your videos have a non-BS approach. It also explains why you grew so quickly, with your consistency too. You never name drop any brands or models, but keep everything neutral, therefore giving the consumer no pressure to think about what equipment pros use. Thanks a lot for the awesome content.
Happy anniversary Simon! I can't believe all of the quality content you have uploaded in just a year. Thanks for all of your hard work, it is really appreciated. I hope you keep going.
Happy anniversary. I'm a little shocked looking back at your video catalog that you've only been doing this for a year. That's a pretty significant amount of content in that time, and the quality is definitely appreciated. As someone that recently purchased my first super tele, a lot of your tips and approaches have been very useful to me, so I really appreciate it.
Simon, I’m a rookie wanna be photographer and you are my go to source for learning. First, I love your work as it’s inspiring to me. I hope to someday be able to shot sharp and composed pictures like yours. Keep up the great videos! I’m learning a lot.
I've been reading up endlessly trying to understand this with no luck. I watched your video and it just clicked. Thank you so much! Some people have huge expanses of knowledge but are not teachers. You my friend are both.
Nikon DSLR shooter here. Both my wife and I have the same camera body D7500. Much of our photography is of wildlife especially birds. We’d like to move to mirrorless, but Nikons offerings just don’t seem to be on the same level as the competition. Just looking at some of Simons work with his mirrorless is pretty spectacular so I’m inclined to switch brands, but it’s so expensive to do that. It’s kind of disappointing Nikon hasn’t seemed to keep up, but for now we still get nice results from the equipment we have. My wife has Nikon 200-500 zoom which is excellent but very heavy so I bought a gimbal for her tripod. I use a Sigma 100-400 lens which on my my crop sensor camera is 150-600. It’s pretty good too but it’s slower and the autofocus isn’t quite as good as the 200-500. Thanks Simon sharing your knowledge and being an inspiration for us!
We just came back from Kenya and I had 2 bodies, one with a 15-85 and the other with a 100-400. The bodies are crop sensor so this gave me pretty much all I needed. Have a great time!
Excellent rundown. I'm a beginner and I've been watching dozens of lens videos over the past few weeks, and despite that I learned a lot from the clear information you laid out here.
I usually think I've got it down, until I watch one of your videos. I always learn something from your videos, no matter how simple the subject matter.
Simon, if we had to pay for your content you would be the best bargain in photography. In every presentation you cover what others do in multiple. Your brain seems to be operating like a super fast lens. I’ve recently started watching you at .75 speed which helps me better absorb the detailed technical stuff. Keep up the good work and thank you.
Cannot thank you enough for your content and channel. Your teaching and perspective is invaluable. And it's clear you care not only about photography, but people as well!
I've recently started on a journey to becoming a UA-camr, documenting my art work and making art vlogs. I soon plan to upgrading to a mirrorless camera. Your videos are are helping a lot in doing my research! Thank you so much, Simon!
Happy anniversary Simon! I love your videos for your concise, thorough, and well organized information, the flashes of humor here and there, and your warm and friendly approach. So excellent!
Congratulations on completing 1 year of your channel, Simon. From the quality of your videos I'd never have guessed that you had started so recently. Congrats again, and best wishes for a long and successful journey ahead.
Hi Simon, my name is Felix, I'm an oversea sales from China. I've been in photograghy industry for 3 year, mostly about lighting products. Recently I joined Smallrig and I found out that I barely know basic information about a camera, because lighting products are mostly about brightness and what atmosphare they can do with the light modifiers, but this company are doing accessories for cameras. So I just thought I must learn more about cameras & lenses, so I just typed in "camera lens" and it recommended this video to me. I want to thank you sooo much as I have learned so much from this video, you made it quite clear and very easy to understand. Now I even know how to buy a lens if I need to. Thank you again for your video and I wish you all the best.❤❤❤
Thank you Simon. I am an amateur photographer. I have been happily shooting wildlife for a couple of years on a cheap bridge camera. So I decided to upgrade as I love it s much. I spent a lot of my savings on a Sony a7 iv. This camera very quickly left me out of my depth. Thankfully your videos have been a great help to me finding my way. I would have been lost without you. Thanks for all the work you put into this channel. I will be watching and re-watching your videos for a long while to come. You’ve done some strong work with this channel sir, and it much appreciated.
Best video! Thank you! 🫶🏻🩷⭐️📸New Canon R3 owner👏🏻 I’m learning about photography to how to photograph my son and his football team in August 2024. Learning to photograph action on the field and also develop really dramatic, edited individual portrait type images, are my goals. I’m watching all of your videos. Thank you from a football mom hoping to make some good memories for my son and team. Upon purchasing my new camera, I was advised to try Canon’s RF 24-105 mm f/4 L IS USM lens and Canon’s RF 100-400 mm F5.7-8 IS USM. I really hope to be back here in a few months with an update of how it’s all going. My son has high expectations and I don’t want to let him down. Thank you 🫶🏻👏🏻🎀
I just got in to photography and out of the many videos / channels ive watched yours feels the most well informed, well explained, and most professional feeling videos. Cant believe youve only been doing the channel for a year and a half. You seem very experienced but also very good at explaining everything.
This is what I needed to watch! Thanks you so much Simon!! I was so lucky, my daughter gave me 4 Sony lenses with art lenses, one zoom to 210mm and the only deal was I had to buy a new camera body. I chose the right bundle and then my twins camera she gave me being a DSLR, I have found very cheap lenses! So I have four for that one also. Now I want to get the 200m to 500mm used for the Nikon and then, the next lens will be the big zoom for the Sony the 200 to 600mm used also.
Wow! 1year anniversary? Congratulations! You really are the best in your niche. The success you have had in one year has proven that. Thank you for all you do and I hope you become even more successful than you ever dreamed doing this.
Your videos are so awesome. Thanks for info you share. They have help me get better shots. As im just started out. Cant wait for your next video. Happy 1 year anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Simon! Honestly, your videos are the best photography videos on UA-cam. The fact that you’re Canadian is simply icing on the cake! 🇨🇦
I've been following you for a couple of weeks now, and my photography skills has improved immensely ever since. Your videos are super informative. Thank you and great job!
Simon, I wanted to thank you again for the great pointers you have supplied to all of us. I’ve been a photographer for over fifty years, and the videos are all helpful even now. I hope the fires and smoke are not causing you too many problems. It’s awful to see that occur.
hey there ! When talking about the aperture, it's easy to get things mixed up when you are a beginner so I'd like to add some things to clear some stuff that you may have glanced over very quickly in this video: First of all, the aperture is proportional to the focal length. An f/4 aperture on a 20mm lens will be 10 times smaller than an f/4 aperture on a 200mm lens. The reason for that is to keep the same amount of light coming into the camera without hurting our brains when we want to judge the exposure of a scene. A wider field of view will mean that the light from a much larger area is coming into the lens. With a longer focal length, if you want to match that quantity of light, you'll need a much larger opening to let the light pass through. Also, the reason we write the aperture as "f/1.4" or "1:1.4" right after the focal length is not a coincidence. "f" means focal (as in focal length), when you're saying "my lens opens up to f/4" it means the diameter of the opening is the focal length divided by 4. (Diameter of the aperture (mm) = focal length (mm) / aperture number (no unit)) There is also several misconceptions when it comes to the aperture and crop factors. Technically, you can apply the crop factor to both the aperture and focal length, however people generally mistake the focal length / aperture with their equivalents. a 50mm f/2 lens put on a full frame camera will give you a certain angle of view and depth of field. If you put that same lens on an APS-C camera, you turn your 50mm into a 76mm equivalent, but the depth of field is still what you'd be expecting to get from a 50mm f/2 lens. If you were to put a 76mm lens on a full frame camera, the depth of field at f/2 would be shallower because of the longer focal length, so you can also have an "equivalent aperture", meaning the aperture you would need on a 76mm lens on a full frame camera to achieve the same depth of field. It is then reasonable to say that a 50mm f/2 lens on an APS-C camera would give the exact same image as a 76mm f/3 lens (1.52x crop factor applied to both focal length and aperture) on a full frame camera. HOWEVER, and this is where the biggest confusion happens, this is strictly in terms of depth of field and angle of view. IT IS NOT applicable to exposure like some people tend to make you believe. A crop sensor will not get "less light" than a full frame sensor (as light is a matter of density, so technically amount of photos per unit of area. It will matter for noise levels, but not exposure itself), and the exposure on both cameras will be the exact same if you put the same lens on them. The better way would be to make up your depth of field relative to your focal length (not the equivalent focal length) and aperture, but that could also bring confusion once several sensor sizes are mixed up. Anyway, that's all I wanted to add, I hope that helps ! Thank you Simon for the video and congrats on your 1 year anniversary !
Another really helpful video.....you could do photography for a living ha ha. Seriously I cannot thank you enough for your time and dedication you put into your videos. I'm sure this first anniversary is one of many more to come.....you deserve all the success that comes your way.
I have been interested in photography for about thirty years and I started off with a zenith em and through the years I've tried different make's and models . I now own a Sony a58 and a77 and even though I have been doing this for such a long time I have never understood the meaning of " the speed of a lens" thankfully you have just enlighten me . Thanks again and can't wait for the next video
Experienced amateur here. Love your videos, even for basics like this. I've just sent the link to a bunch of newbies I know. Keep up the excellent work.
Congratulations on the anniversary, Simon. You have one of the best photography UA-cam channels. The photos you display are fantastic, and I find your explanations and tutorials both accessible and really useful. I wish you all the best for the future development of your channel. It would be great to have more videos about landscape photography, if you are so inclined.
Thank you Simon, Not only do you have amazing skills with Photography you have a real talent for explaining Photography, I have learned so much from your channel.
I own Canon m50 and my favorite lenses are native 22mm prime (pocketable), EF 35mm prime (default lens for me), EF 24-105mm f/4, EF 70-200mm f/2.8 (with booster) and EF 100-400mm (with adapter for birding). I tried telephoto primes, but encountered too many situations when I would rather have zoom. Situations when I needed more grip while birding were also more frequent for me than the opposite was the case. So, relatively dark 100-400mm on APS-C is as good as it gets for what I do (especially with booster as an option).
Simon, I am a beginner in photography and I love nature, your videos are a inspiration and an amazing learning tool for me. I enjoy seeing them. Thank you for posting it.
Happy anniversary and many more, Simon! We're so lucky to have you sharing your techniques, ideas, and experiences. It is surprising how much I have been learning from you. I thank you so very much for that!🙏🏽🙏🙏🏿
I just picked up the Canon EF mount 100-400 4.5-5.6 the other day and I'm using the lens on my Canon R10 along with an adapter, so far I'm happy with my first good lens and I already have one picture that's pretty good
Wow congratulations sir. I’ve learned so much from your vids. I retired last yr and have always loved photography. I use to be in the dark room with my father as a kid (8 yrs and up). Now it’s a digital world and I’m loving it. Shoot, download, edit. Life’s good ….😎
Congratulations on your UA-cam anniversary!!!!! I discovered your channel probably about 3 months into your project! I was immediately hooked, you are great with your teaching skills and photography knowledge. You are the only one I really listen to on a regular basis!!! Keep up the work, you are doing great and I expect your viewership will continue to increase!!! Thank you for all you do! Rich
Dear Simon I myself don't know how to express my appreciation to you for your very useful videos. I just can say whenever I watch them, I feel I am in a real class and get the right and to-the-point answers to my questions. Thank you, dude.
Hey Simon! I just bought a camera based on your recommendations. I literally watched your video about sacrificing camera body for better lenses monetarily, and the second I left your video and googled a camera to buy, I found a great deal from BestBuy on a canon EOS R100 mirrorless, that comes with 2 different lenses (18-45mm STM and 55-210mm). I am so thrilled I found your channel, you have already been a huge inspiration and teacher. I am going to recreate your shots at 2:35 and I will tag you in the photos on Facebook when I do! Then I am going on a trip to Quebec City, and I CANNOT WAIT to employ some of your advice. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, you have truly awakened my creative side again.
Congrats on the 1 year in UA-cam. Loving the way you present photography topics. Wishing you all the best for the future and looking forward to many more videos from you. Greets from Malaysia 👍
I'm not a landscape photographer, but love your channel. I'm an enthusiast street photographer. You present information in an informative and engaging manner. Congratulations on 1 year
This is such great info. I wish you had been making videos when I started to learn - but I can still learn a lot from these overviews. And your Milky Way shots are incredible!!
I'm not a "first" subscriber and I can't tell when exactly I've found your channel. But what I can say is that it was a blessing and I appreciate your work Simon and you really do help people 🙌Happy anniversary! P.S: Can't make anyone happy, but also thanks for taking feedback seriously 🤝
I don't want to sound age-ist but I truly admire your work. I'm legit tired seeing these influencers trying to give me short cuts on social media on photography. I've been sharing a lot of your videos with friends who are interested in photography. Also, you've helped me improve my photography with my kids. I kind of treat it like wildlife photography. Hahaa.
Just now seeing this video. Have watched a few others of yours, all very educational. Happy (probably now 2nd year) anniversary. Love the videos and your pictures.
Happy One-Year Anniversary! You deserve every success! As a not-beginner photographer, you still hold me by the way you share your knowledge. At times, you still teach me something new, other times you remind me of something I should have remembered but have gotten into a bad rut. Either way, I enjoy all your videos. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. As to your question, most of my lenses are zoom for practicality while being aware of the trade-offs. I’m mostly a birder, but always want to be prepared to take landscapes. With only two lenses, I’m usually covered. I recently bought a 4/3 camera as a “walk-about.” Even then, I opted for a zoom to cover contingencies (that odd pigeon 😊). It also guarantees I won’t be dragging by the end of the day.
Simon, I have been a photographer for about 50 years, even when I was younger teaching photography classes and equipment sales. However, I still enjoy watching even your basic videos. hey there !
When talking about the aperture, it's easy to get things mixed up when you are a beginner so I'd like to add some things to clear some stuff that you may have glanced over very quickly in this video:
First of all, the aperture is proportional to the focal length.
(Diameter of the aperture (mm) = focal length (mm) / aperture number (no unit))
There is also several misconceptions when it comes to the aperture and crop factors.
Thanks for the add!
That's enlightenment! Thank you...
Everything spot on except for the equivalent aperture. I guess you already know this, that's why you used those quotation marks...😉

Thank you Simon, Not only do you have amazing skills with Photography you have a real talent for explaining Photography, I have learned so much from your channel.
Great Video exactly what a I needed to hear!!!
The way you broke it down truly helpful!!!
I really like your style. You are very clear and straight to the point, and I find your videos very helpful. No time wasting here. Thank you.
I'm extremely grateful, Sir Simon, for the invaluable assistance your tutorials provide in a rural area. Wishing you continued success!
THANK YOU for making these videos. You have a great presentation style, and I appreciate the beginner stuff.
I appreciate that!
i thought buying a camera was going to be very difficult. You made it real easy man. Much appreciated.
You explain things in a way that is very easy to understand
Simon, I am a beginner in photography and I love nature, your videos are a inspiration and an amazing learning tool for me. I enjoy seeing them. Thank you for posting it.
1 year, 140K subs is a record in this category. Very well done. Congratulation!
Thank you very much!
Happy anniversary and many more, Simon!
We're so lucky to have you sharing your techniques, ideas, and experiences.
It is surprising how much I have been learning from you. I thank you so very much for that!🙏🏽🙏🙏🏿
Even though I know the information already, I still watched the video and enjoyed listening to your explanation. Fantastic Chanel!
I just picked up the Canon EF mount 100-400 4.5-5.6 the other day and I'm using the lens on my Canon R10 along with an adapter, so far I'm happy with my first good lens and I already have one picture that's pretty good
Congratulations on ONE YEAR!!! Of GREAT videos!!! Thank-YOU Simon!!!😀😀😀
Thank you too!

Wow congratulations sir. I’ve learned so much from your vids. I retired last yr and have always loved photography. I use to be in the dark room with my father as a kid (8 yrs and up). Now it’s a digital world and I’m loving it. Shoot, download, edit. Life’s good ….😎
Thanks for your very informative videos. The way you convey the information makes it easy for a beginner like me to understand!
Happy Anniversary Simon and wishing you continued success.

Dear Simon I myself don't know how to express my appreciation to you for your very useful videos. I just can say whenever I watch them, I feel I am in a real class and get the right and to-the-point answers to my questions. Thank you, dude.
So nice of you
Congrats on your 1 year anniversary. Learning a lot from your posts.
Simon, thank you so much for your informative, inspiring videos! Your photography is awe inspiring!
My pleasure!
Thank you Simon... such a good teacher
Happy 1st year in youtubing! Looking forward to many more!
Oh wow! so on an ASP-C censor, at 35mm you are going to be looking at closer to a 50mm focal length? god that is such an amazing tip.
Congrats on the 1 year in UA-cam. Loving the way you present photography topics. Wishing you all the best for the future and looking forward to many more videos from you. Greets from Malaysia 👍
The best effect of your video on me - gave the courage to shoot beyong ISO 320 or 1/500 seconds speed. Cannot thank you enough... 🎉❤
So much information in such a short time! Thanks again for another excellent video!
Congrats on one-year, Simon! You channel has been a great help for me and an inspiration.
I'm not a landscape photographer, but love your channel. I'm an enthusiast street photographer.
You present information in an informative and engaging manner. Congratulations on 1 year
Awesome! Thank you!
Your explanation s is very clear and crisp…I understand every explanation-ThankYou
New to the hobby, and new to your channel……. I love it. Thank you for all your wonderful content and masterful presentation!
Welcome aboard!
Happy 1st anniversary of your channel. I always watch your videos with great interest.
Great video. I have never seen anyone YT to explain what you just did. It is extremely clear and understandable.
Welcme!
Hahaa.
Congratulations simon! Looking forward to watching more of you informational and concise videos😁
Just now seeing this video. Have watched a few others of yours, all very educational. Happy (probably now 2nd year) anniversary. Love the videos and your pictures.
this video is the the only guide that a beginner should listen.. txn for the course!
You are a great teacher! Very well done. Thank you
You're very welcome!
Your explanation is really straight forward. As a beginner I really find your video to be super useful. Thank you for this video.
Another fantastic video Simon. Congratulations on your anniversary, and have a great trip!
Thanks, will do!
