No they don't. They never actually do piracy. They are more like adventures/heros of nations under tyrany

A wanted criminal, who declared war on the government by the way, breaks into a max security prison to break out his even more wanted brother. And, in doing so he also lets out some of the most dangerous people in the world. That's not a heroic act, it's terrorism.
Tekking, there is one part of the pirate code that you completely forgot about and I am utterly, UTTERLY, shocked that you didn't mention:
"If your crew loses in a Davey Back Fight and the other captain picks you, you have to be completely loyal to the other crew that have won you"
Shanks must have a "Da Rules" book somewhere.
Rule #1: be mysterious

Well, Tekking, Rocks did allow his crew mates to kill each other.
I think BM, WB, and Kaido have codes BECAUSE they saw what happens when someone doesn't. They saw Rocks fall, and they didn't want that fate.

How do you know rocks allowed this?
The Rocks pirates was more like an alliance of the strong and not really a crew that he could control outright sorta like Luffy and Law. They had a code of regulation but no real allegiance. Kaido, Linlin, Shiki and Edward Newgate. The only person who could keep that together must've been a nightmare and once Rocks was gone you wouldn't need to defeat the rest of the crew to declare victory they would just leave 😂
@@NotExplicable From what I recall the Rocks pirates were indeed rather bad at cooperating with each other, they apparently killed each other when they were not killing their enemies and as a result didn't reminisce about their time together much. Rocks must have been quite something to keep so many powerful individuals with different viewpoints working together as well as they did. I think funnily enough they are a reflection of the Strawhats. Both groups have a diverse group of individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses and occasionally they have their arguments and fights, but the difference is that at the end of the day none of them really regret joining together while the Rocks pirates clearly only had Rocks himself keeping them in check. I do think that part of the reason that they parted ways was because Whitebeard himself noted that they are not people who are really willing to serve others so they probably went their own ways to keep from fighting for dominance until they could be sure of winning.

there was an accountant/lawyer turned pirate captain (forget his name). He was on a ship that got captured by pirates, and ended up sailing with them for the next several months as a prisoner. The thing is that there was a mutiny and he found himself being the 3rd party, became temporary captain, and ended up doing a better job then either of the other candidates did...

That "pretending to be pirates" and "attacking your own crew" thing was a big reason why Luffy was so incensed about Kuro, even beyond his plans to kill Kaya and attack Usopp's village. Which is really cool of him.

I'd like to think of an irony though.
Luffy seems to be the type of person that won't bother with people and what they're doing unless it directly aligns/hinders what Luffy himself plans on doing. He wouldn't care about Crocodile if it wasn't for Vivi, he wouldn't bother Kuro if it wasn't for his selfish need to want a ship from Kaya, which kind of makes Luffy a bad guy because he'll let other keep doing bad things if it won't bother him, he said himself he doesn't want to be "a hero" because he wants to eat all the meat".
The irony is that, albeit non-canon, Luffy was shown in the DBZ crossover that he can ride the nimbus, which we know is not possible if the person doesn't have a pure heart.
How can he be pure and be that selfish? -shrugs-
@@n1hondude I would argue against him helping Kaya just for the ship--because if I recall he wasnt 100% sure she would even give him one, and I think it was more because he wanted to help Usopp than anything else, but as to the Nimbus thing... Probably depends on what it defines as "a pure heart." Because Luffy is selfish, sure, but it isnt like he goes around attacking people just to try and hoard things like material goods. Even when it comes to food, he will steal it, sure, like with dining and dashing... But he only does so when he is actually hungry and he doesnt steal it from people who actually need it. At least not intentionally--and in cases like Tama or Fishman Island, he felt bad about eating their special food once he found out how much they did actually need it.
So i guess it is like... He is pure in the sense that he doesnt let his morals get corrupted? He is by no means a saint, but he also doesnt go around flaunting his strength just because he can.
That could be wrong though. I dont know too much about DBZ anyways.

Big Mom didn’t take kindly to children being hurt (when she’s not having her hunger fits that is) but Kaido didn’t care.
Well it is pirate code it’s prolly more ambiguous than set rules.
That’s why their aren’t just 2 types of pirates, oda realized how limiting and unrealistic that is
Kaido was going to spare momonosuke if he wasn't kozuki Kaido couldn't allow a symbol of hope to exist at it will always have ran the risk of rebellion.

I wrote a pirate code for my One Piece D&D campaign, it had several articles that boiled down to:
1. Don't kill crew mates, and what to do if someone does,
2. Captain's orders in battle are absolute, how to disagree with them,
3. Pay arrangements,
4. Parle,
5. Crimes pirates can't commit,
6. Trials,
7. Punishments,

The biggest example of why you shouldn't kill your crewmates is best shown in the Raid on Onigashima. Queen showing no regard for the pleasures and waiters and even infecting them with something that will kill them causes thousands of his subordinates to turn on him. Combined with the gifters getting dango'ed and it makes you shake your head at the petty act of evil. Queen helped the good guys just by being a douche, not something you should do in the middle of a war.
And that’s why I prefer villains who are charismatic as hell and intelligent enough to use it. Petty evil is just, ugh. Even going full on demon shit is better than being a douche like Queen was.

Making enemies of your crew is a foolish idea at any time let alone during a full-scale battle.
@@jamesvach6698 Queen can also handle those gifters and pleasures but a large quantity of them, I don't think queen can handle that I am not saying he's weak but they did have some skill which if they all attack queen, they can do damage not like kill him but like stop queen from killing them any further
There's some interesting points I think you could've touched more on
1. there does seem to be some varying on the level of intra crew murder between crews. For example, Big mom has probably iced a few of her men on a hunger pang and Kaido was ready to let a tobi roppo ascend via duel to the death, not to mention queen killing all those minions with the plague bullets, so for him it might be purely a hierarchy based thing, like you can kill whoever's below you but you have to earn it for a chance to go for a bigger position
2. Davy Back fights, I think Robin mentioned that was an old part of the traditions that you literally can't go against and call yourself a pirate, so you have to follow all the explicitly stated rules and you can't just murder the other crew if you lost
3. Jumping off the Davy Back thing, there's a lot of emphasis on flags. If you lose your flag it's a huge sign of failure. Don't explicitly aim for flags like Wapol did. and if you earn the flag of a senior pirate like Bellamy and Doffy, you have their protection to whatever extent they'll grant it, but you have to comport yourself according to that captain's standards and if you don't they can take it away or discipline you
Even though we're talking about Shanks v. Kidd this video, what do you think happened when Shanks confronted Bartelomeo about the Straw Hat merch thing? I'm very curious about this.
@Edward T. i think it depends on how Barto acted before they showed up. If he hurt the citizens then all bets are off. If he just burned the flag and started agressively peddling his merch, i think he'd just get a light maiming and get scared off
It could be argued that Big Mom and Kaido claim to have a code but in reality are scumbags that will break the code if it benefits them. Whereas people like Whitebeard and Shanks will keep to the code even if it puts them at a disadvantage.
I think you CAN go and murder the other crew to get your crew or flag back. What you absolutely couldnt do without being ostracized was steal or sneak the crew member back, or make a new flag and keep flying it as if nothing happened

I like whitebeards attitude to blackbeard, because what he said to shanks reminded me of how I imagine he would treat a son gone astray, that he still feels he bears responsibility to teach him a lesson

According to the Ace Novels, part of the Pirate Code is that if you're on a boat you contribute to it's function, regardless of how you got there.
And I will second a "following through with threats" thing. For example, when big mom was like "You fuckers better have the cake, otherwise I'll have to kill my kid."
Regarding Dorry and Broggy destroying the Victoria Punk after Heat and Wire gave Shanks the Poneglyph rubbings, it's important to remember that the giants aren't actually part of Shanks' crew. Shanks dealt with Kidd for his attempted attack on his crew, but the giants were still entitled to enact their own punishment for trying to fire at Elbaf

Probably included in the code is procedures for if someone wants to Quit. Stuff like... "We'll drop you off at the next proper island (I.e, one that isn't literally just marooning someone, and an island that actually sees traction) with the pay you've earned and your stuff." or what-not. Prolly also an NDA about the secrets of the crew.
Like... not what happened with Usopp, but more akin to a crewmate wanting to leave.

I don’t think Kidd didn’t realise what he was doing. He strikes me as the type to break the rules and understand that whatever comes out of that is a consequence of that. He wouldn’t be ‘graceful’ about it per se because that isn’t his character but he IS a pirate, he’d probably still be pissed off at Shanks, but that’s because he lost and he hates losing.
Sounds about right. I should note that he is like Luffy in the sense that when he is defeated by someone his typical response seems to be the same, keep trying to fight until he wins, or he dies trying. Now to be clear he is not the same as Luffy, he makes it quite clear that he is not a nice person since he is a pirate after all and there are other differences, but when it comes to this stubbornness, he is similar to Luffy although he probably wouldn't like that comparison.

Yeah theres definitely an unspoken Pirates Code I plan on writing about it at some point but it seems like Elbaf will be where Oda establishes the Pirate Code for the first time since it's the land of Honor and all that. We'll likely get an explanation from Shanks on what this code is and why it's important.

To be fair to the Kidd pirates situation with surrendering, it was Dorry and Broggy who continued to attack after they surrendered. And that probably falls more under the whole "you are/were attacking our home" deal. And they were probably acting more as Elbaph citizens at the time than pirates, even though they are both. (Assuming they didnt retire). And the rules surrounding Elbaph and fighting might be different anyways--possibly more fights to the death in order to maintain honor. Or just not accepting surrender when it comes to threats to the island.

Dorry and Broggy got the order from Shanks to follow him into battle. I'm still willing to say it is fair game but I don't see how Kidd broke some code of honor, all those pirate crews were sizing up being ready and willing to fight for Shanks.
So Kidd was about to attack people willing to fight while Shanks (or Dorry and Broggy) attacked people unwilling to fight, though that feels like twisting it, in the end Kidds crew was asking for it.
EDIT: also this made me think of the moment when Nami and Usopp boasted on specializing in "enemies that have lost the will to fight and fleeing", which was hilarious and fair game.

Ok so I've been thinking about why someone would wish for a jacket fruit. And I think Oda will do something about two people in a cold place(maybe even Freezing hell in impel down) and one of them just wished for the power to keep the other person warm- and created the fruit to turn into a jacket for others to wear.

Definitely feels like the defining feature of pirate honour is never to perform an action you aren’t willing to follow through with.
You see it right from the earliest chapters with Lucky Roo killing the mountain bandit for pointing his gun to threaten Luffy.
Pirating is a life of freedom. But you honour your crew, and you commit to everything you do.
Watch the show black sails. It's a great pirate show where they blend a sort of prequel to treasure island and historical figures and occurrences and discuss the Pirate code a lot. Great video man :)
But yeah, Kid was asking for it big time. And on the note of Luffy and Zoro, I've seen a meme that says 'you know shit gets serious when Luffy stops smiling and Zoro starts smiling '
19:24 "When you threaten somebody you have to mean it" Should have told that to the crews that were pulling up to confront Kidd. Shanks was telling everyone to stay back but some of them were already heading out to Kidd. I really don't see Kidd as jumping the gun in that case, he was firing on ships pulling up to fight him. And we heard from those captains, they knew what they were doing, they weren't a ship of civilians getting gunned down by Akainu. They were going with the intent of fighting Kidd and without Shank's future sight, they were going to be decimated for it.
Yeah ,but you're ignoring the fact that his whole reason for being on Elbaf is to take on the Red Haired Pirates. They were pulling up to defend themselves and the island.

This. I feel like each crew has their own code of honor. Kidd's is to treat each potential enemy as a genuine threat. Shanks said everyone knew his allies were weak, but it seemed like Kidd had never heard of them before. So, he treated them as a proper threat and they would have fought to the best of their abilities. Shanks' future sight only shows actions, not thoughts.
I think with the "Leaving an ill crew mate behind" thing, it depends on both the crew and the illness, like if someone had a very contagious illness/disease or are on Death's Door then yeah leave them behind

What's crazy is that we have seen the Marines break this first article of killing your own at least twice. Akainu killing the soldier trying to leave Marineford and Onigumo killing a soldier who suggested not taking the savage route, like many Marine officers do. I think it really shows there is no good side and bad side, only people can be good or bad (except the World Government - they can go byebye)! :):)

There are those who see ruling by fear as an effective or desired route to getting the results they want. There are also those who have no issue sacrificing those under them if they perceive them as enemies or simply as being in the way.
Not everyone in the world government are evil, 99 percent are but theres people like Kong who in my opinion would most likely be similar to Sen Goku but harsher
The biggest examples of a pirate crew leaving someone behind was Brook's crew leaving their captain and Roger's crew leaving Buggy (and Shanks)
What about the Going Merry? That’s… well, it’s not *exactly* the same but it’s in the same spirit. If you can’t advance with someone/thing because it’s too damaged, you have to be ready to leave then behind. Same could be said for Yubashiri, after it was rusted out, Zoro left it behind on Thriller Bark.
I don’t see anything about brooks crew leaving him behind just that they gave him the nicknames for his attacks
@@final2k565 no, not Brook, Yorki, former captain of the Rumbar Pirates, and Laboon too, but Laboon is another topic.
Yorki and other cremates got sick with an incurable, and they left the Rumbar Pirates with their first ship to the Calm Belt, in a last ditch attempt to find help. Crocus even saw them in there and thought all Rumbar Pirates gave up on Laboon because they didn't go to Laboon after leaving the Grand Line.
It was only after that that Brook turned into the captain of the Rumbar Pirates when they got their second ship he was unanimously voted captain.
@@final2k565 Brook's crew had to leave York behind (Brook included in leaving York behind). At least, I think his name was York. Might be Yorkie or something similar...
Buggy wasn’t kicked out, was he? I thought that he only disappeared after the Roger crew was disbanded.
Also among One Piece Pirate rules "You have to respect the captain's decisions." You may disagree with what they've decided, but you don't get to just go against that decision. If its a serious, real decision, you have to honor it. And we've actually seen this a lot with the Straw Hats. The most well known being when Usopp argued about Luffy's decision to get a new ship at Water 7 and then left the crew over it, and Zoro refused to let them bring Usopp back unless he apologized for his show of disrespect to Luffy's authority.
We see other examples of this too, like with Nami. As much as Nami might panic when Luffy chooses a dangerous course or decision, once Luffy has committed to that action (when its serious, not a comedy bit), Nami accepts it. And she actually complains in these moments less as the series goes on, which I think is partially because of the argument Luffy and Usopp had at Water 7 and realizing that trying to push around Luffy on his decisions really isn't okay.
The line from Dorry and Brogy closely mirror Shank's line from all the way back in the first issue. A mountain bandit points his gun at Shanks, who then says, "You're putting your life on the line by pointing that at me." In other words, if you are going to point a gun at someone, be prepared for them to fight back. Worked out just as well for the bandit as it did for Kid.

Tekking I think you're the best person I can think of to start and maintain some sort of "bracket" style reference table detailing for the rest of one piece, the battles and their winners.

I love how shanks preaches to everyone else about knowing what it means to be a pirate, but the same people in his fleet have no idea what they signed up for they were literally disintegrated in seconds

interesting thought: what if Whitebeard, Big Mom, Kaidou and Roger set up the pirate code after Rocks to hone in piracy a little? they saw what the government could do if things got to out of hand, so they decided that they should all have to abide by a code of sorts to prevent another Rocks from showing up

There are a lot of pirates around Somalia today.
Furthermore, if you simply do not fly a flag of a recognized nation (so no flag or even just your own flag), then you can be considered a pirate by maritime law, and no one will complain if someone sinks your ship.
(It's really messed up and kinda reminds me of the tenryobeto tribute in that if you do not comply, you basically have no human rights.)

Something I thought would be mentioned is how kaidos crew functioned. Where the tobi roppo had the potential to become a headliner by completing a task and challenging the current headliners. Maybe it wasn’t to the death or anything but it seemed interesting

@@mihaimorar2043 Indeed, it seems that Kaido's crew existed in a state of constant outright hostility based on the survival and ascension of the strong. The Tobi Roppo (or some of them) desired to replace the All-Stars by killing them to the point of some ignoring their orders and there are those who desired to replace the Toppi Roppo while the All-Stars would likely have no issue replacing the Toppi Roppo themselves (Queen's deception to trap Drake had to have some degree of believability so this is likely the case).

I think the reason we don't know the Pirate Code is that while there are universal tenets most pirates follow it varies from crew to crew and of course there are pirates who disregard it

I feel like the bit is gonna be something like everyone's perspective on what the pirate code truly is is different from person to person, just sorta seems like the gray area storytelling that Oda likes. Obviously some are more widespread/commonly followed than others, but you can NOT convince me that if you asked Luffy, Shanks, Teach, and Buggy all what they would define as the pirate code you wouldn't get drastically different answers.

Indeed there are many different views of how to be a pirate and likely as many different "codes" so to speak for each person. I once recalled a movie where the pirates have different views of their own set of rules from stringently following them to disregarding them and every position in between, but each individual has their own set of rules even though they may try to disguise them or describe them differently. For example, one such individual said that when it comes to pirates there are no rules, only a matter of what a pirate can and cannot do. He used this as a reason to let one character live saying that he is free to let him drown, but he cannot run the boat by himself when he was looking to avoid killing if he could avoid it. Likewise in the same conversation he told this character that he can believe that his father is a pirate and a good man, or he can choose not to, but pirate is part of who he is by blood so he will have to make peace with that part of himself someday.
To quote another rather infamous pirate, “The Code is more what you call guidelines than actual rules.”

Iirc pirates basically had a thing like marriage between crew mates. They weren't married in a biblical way, it was just that if they die, the other person gets their stuff.

In Chapter one, Shanks says, "we're pirates, and we don't play by the rules." (Of course, I don't think he meant it so universally. Shanks obviously does have a code.)
Also, all of the pirates in the east blue except Arlong WERE willing to kill a crewmate. Alvida, Buggy, Kuro, and Don Kreig attacked her own crew.
Don Krieg even attacked the people who saved his crew's life.
Honestly, as horrible as Arlong was, he is the most amiable of all the east blue pirates.
Probably because Arlong wasn’t originally from the East. Buggy doesn’t really have an excuse, as he also went through the Grand Line, but Arlong was an old hand when it came to real piracy. Everyone else were just minor leaguers or rookies at that point.
@@coltonwilliams4153 I recall hearing somewhere that Arlong viewed fishmen as his family even the ones who didn't agree with him and he would never hurt one of them willingly. That explains him. Don Krieg seems to have no loyalties to his crew viewing them as people who exist to obey him without question, killing those who questioned him or disobeyed him, and planning to replace the lost members with pirates crews from around the East Blue. He is pragmatic enough to know that he needs a crew, but outside of that they are expendable. I should also note that he has no honor believing that only victory matters and the closest he came to mercy was giving the chefs of the Baratie until his crew was full to leave. He has no real sense of mercy. Kuro also views his crew as expendable tools whom he killed if they failed him and ultimately, he planned to kill them regardless both to protect his cover and because he viewed them as idiots who only had worth when he was telling them what to do. He seemed to kill as much for pleasure as for the fulfillment of his plans and ultimately turned down less violent means in favor of his original idea. Alvida and Buggy by comparison seem to be less bloodthirsty and prone to seeing their crew members are useless. Now that is not to say they do not employ violent means or punishing their crew or that they will not leave someone behind or even kill them if they deem it fit, but it seems that Kuro and Kreig take things to another level in comparison.
The reason shanks says this is because it's a contradiction lmfao. It's not consistent, it's a flaw in the story. Like shanks losing an arm to a sea king that lost to chapter 1 Luffy lmfao. Even though Shanks had already beaten CP9 agents and dueled with Mihawk at that time lol. People just have trouble accepting that a story they love has flaws and plot holes

@@josephreagan9545 even then, (and to be clear I don't disagree with that, at all.) normally I would do the same, but some plot holes and inconsistencies are so direct and extreme that you really can't even come up with in universe explanations. And kinda just have to accept that it's a retcon and doesn't make sense lol. Like nobody is trying to come up with in-universe explanations for Shanks losing an arm lol. Literally nobody does that just because it's such a blatant and irreconcilable flaw that it doesn't even make sense to begin to think about in-universe explanations lol. Shanks saying Pirates don't have rules is another such example in my view. Sometimes we just have to accept the flaw is a flaw, like with Shanks and his arm or the retcon about pirate rules
That part about shanks telling white beard to stop ace isn’t what happened. White beard did tell ace to not go after teach and ace ignored it. Instead of admitting that to shanks, he took responsibility for ace not listening.
Thats how I interpreted it from the conversation between ace and white beard when ace was on the execution platform.

The best example I can think about is when Luffy, Zoro and Nami landed at Syrup Village and were met by Usopp and the other kids pretending to be pirates. They backed down REAL quick when they realized how scary true pirates really are, and Usopp was lucky it was Luffy and Zoro there, not Blackbeard or Kidd.

I don't think kid even considers the code. He will just wake up and be like "Next time i kill shanks". I don't see him blaming anyone as much as just getting angry that he lost.

I'm not sure if tekking understands, but Shanks stopped kidd from attacking. His future sight saw what happened and intercepted kidd as he was charging his canon before he shot. He didn't actually fire it yet when he was cut down.

Kidd will come back for sure. However, kidd pirates are done for good. I have a feeling this event will change him and his outlook. He actually has tons of potential. We saw him keeping up with luffy at udon prison with the seastone. He just has a poor creed. Luffy protects his crew, and strives to get stronger to continue to do so. He lost his crew before, and experienced what it felt like to have all their dreams at risk. He proudly shoulders the responsibilities of the captain. Kidd got a glimpse at wano, and actually seemed to come out a bit better than before. Unfortunately, his new bounty gave him a massive ego and made him think he could take on anyone. This made him go back to his old ways. This time, it will hit him much harder. He will have lost his crew and this time will suffer the consequences. He is no longer a captain, and I think that will bother him the most.
Yeah fr like tekking said, I hope he gets character development and realized what he did wrong at his encounter with shanks and actually changes his ways drastically not just running into a yonko's area or territory without no plan or danger that he gone himself into with shanks because of him defeating big mom which then made him prompted to go after shanks when he had help with law to defeat BM

I never thought about it before you mentioned it, but why did Shanks stop Whitebeard from going after Blackbeard? It seems like Shanks would have known how much a threat Blackbeard could be even back then?
He just wanted Ace to back off, or at least not go it alone. It wasn’t about letting Blackbeard off the hook.
Indeed, if it was the entirety of the Whitebeard pirates or even just Whitebeard himself then there would be much less cause for worry. But as strong as Ace was (comparatively speaking) Blackbeard unfortunately was at an advantage due to his devil fruit ability.

The thing about rules and codes of honor is that these things are for the strong. Most weak pirates can't afford to be honorable and merciful, because they will be crushed either by law enforcement or by the competition. We see time and time again how soft people thriving among the pirates are the exception, not the rule. The best you can hope for when it comes to a pirate code of honor is "don't betray your own people", that's about it.

@@ivanbluecool this is a common rule in IRL criminal organisation's, and it exists not because of morals, but because it's impossible to commit such high-risk criminal acts time after time when you 24/7 expect your allies to stab you in the back. The paranoia will literally drive you insane, so this basic rule is usually accepted and enforced.

Some interesting situation with regards to the code would be how Usopp leaving the crew and later returning went down. Also the fight between Luffy and Katakuri was an interesting situation from that perspective.

In the game called Sea of Thieves there is more Morganeer pirates players, but some of them don't just come and just try to shot you down if you escape because you don't want to battle they will hunt you until you and your ship are at the bottom of the sea.
Playing solo is the most difficult thing to do on that game because you don't want a enemy player to destroy your ship when you're exploring a island for treasures/ stuffs, so when I play with my friends there is always one person who is left to look out for enemy pirates, and if it looks like they coming toward us then we would be prepared for battle, or hope for good wind so that we can try to escape before the enemy can get to us.
