Holy shit I just realized this show was probably influenced by old master control operator jobs. I was a master control operator years ago and you literally sit there having to watch whatever your station was airing. LITERALLY. You have to make sure the signal is broadcasting correctly and occasionally play shows from video tape to air. I had to monitor DAYS OF OUR LIVES and it was so maddening. Even the pilot intro here shows a master control room. Now I love this show even more, from my experiences from being TRAPPED by an evil corporation to watch terrible shows.
Joel has said that the original inspiration for him was the old Warner Bros cartoons when sometimes the characters would talk back to the audience or they would show someone in the "audience" moving in front of the screen. (remember that cartoon shorts were originally shown in front of movies at theaters.)

I know. That is the main problem with the themesong. It is a nice tune, with good words that people want to sing. However, they all sing different verses, and have arguments over it, instead of having fun.
Not sure if it's something to do with regional accents, but from a rhythmic standpoint the points of emphasis in the earliest version is a bit... weird. Not *bad* exactly, but stilted and awkward. If it's what they were going for, it's a stylistic decision they changed their minds on, and I think they wouldn't have gone as intergenerational as they have if they kept it as-is, though the latter versions are *not* perfect. My personal go-to example is how 'next Sunday AD' is a 5-syllable line following an 8-syllable line, only managing to partially match the beat by stretching the 'n' in Sunday to a beat of it's own ('next-sun-n-day-a-d') with the first syllable on an unstressed beat, while the later 'Saturday' line variation needs no oddly stretched pronunciation to match the even syllables of the preceeding line. However, "We'll send him horr-i-ble-mo-vies" trying to fit 5 syllables into 4 hurts my brain and imho "cheesy movies" works much better. Have a good day!
I always liked how in the first Mike intro, when they get to the line "with the help of his robot friends," we get a scene of Mike tied up while the robots shake their heads, as if they're disagreeing with the song about being his friends

After having moved to Wisconsin and learned the origins of this show, it's amazing how well MST3K encapsulates default midwestern humor. Understated, sarcastic and witty.
What is it about Wisconsin that makes it home to the all time greats of film commentary, like this and RedLetterMedia, the modern version of this show? It's constantly cold there!
I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but I just realized that the initials for the Satellite of Love is also the same as the saying "Sh*t Outta Luck", makes sense since this is the perfect way to describe Joel, Mike, or Jonah since they're stuck on the ship.
How He Eats: Despite being gross, he's forced to subsist on hamdingers. Either that, or he's sent up food during the invention exchange. How He Breathes: If this is a spacecraft made to test the effects of bad movies on a person's mind, it would be equipped with either life support systems or a very large oxygen reserve with CO2 Scrubbers so he doesn't die of CO2 Poisoning. If the SOL wasn't equipped with these systems, any living creature on board would be long dead.
so its all Joel's fault that every host that came after him can't control when the movies begin or end because Joel's used those special parts the build the robots

Even with the modern addition of skipping intros on Netflix and UA-cam, I still watch the intro anyway because this intro is so delightful from the low budget original to Netflix version

My father and his theatre friends watched it all the time when I was a kid. I'm 20 now and just started watching the Netflix Series but I could still remember the shapes of the robots' silhouettes with some guy in between them. Before that, I recently saw Joel and the bots live in my hometown for Joel's last tour on the Satellite of Love. It was an interesting concept to me then, even though I barely understood or recalled what was said, and riffing has been one of my favorite forms of comedy, as it allows me to ease the suffering of the worst movies we can find.
I love that they kept Godzilla's drop kick supported only by his tail for four seasons. It's from Godzilla vs. Megalon, the only one I've seen without Joel and the Bots. In the Netflix seasons, the movie clip shown during the theme song is always from the movie featured in that particular episode.
It was only a year ago that I had never watched a single episode of MST3K before finding the episodes on UA-cam. Now I can't imagine my life without this show.
Backed the kickstarter to bring it back as living in the UK its notoriously difficult to get any MSTiE merch whatsoever...ended up with my name in the credits of "Avalanche" totally glad the shows back and I cant wait for season 12! :D
Imagine Captain Kirk or Picard on the enterprise running into a dog bone shaped station with one guy and a couple of robots and they’re being forced to watch terrible movies. I’d watch the hell outta that episode!

@@maddymooo I can kinda see Tom's new voice going for more of what Josh Weinstien did, but i honestly miss his 50's radio voice. Crow has sounded the same throughout all of his voices, just with slightly different inflections. I can definitely tell Bill's Crow from Trace's and Hampton's and so on I respect the decision to give Gypsy a legitimately female voice, but man, i still really love her loudmouth falsetto.

Is there anywhere I can find the non-movie riffing parts of this show? Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I kinda want to see the "plot" as it were of MST3K. -Like, what happened to Joel? Why did the Mads leave and get replaced? Where did Pearl come from?- These are the questions that keep me up at night. Edit: After a quick browse of the wiki, I have my answers. Still want to see it firsthand, though.
Season 7 is the shortest, but also the funniest. Blood Beast is in my opinion the funniest episode, it's just non-stop amazing lines. "Had to snap him in half like a frozen dog!"
I just don't know why they feel the need to say that the ktma episodes are not really part of the series I mean just because it aired in a small area doesn't mean it's not part of the show itself
When we got the last original seasons of MST3K, the voices for the Robots got more audible. I like the lines they throw out. Cambot - You're on! Gypsy - Oh, my stars! Tom Servo - Check me out! CROOOOW! - I'm different.
Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show! I should really just relax!" Seriously though, there's probably a kitchen somewhere on the ship (in fact, if you see the doors during that line in the newest Netflix theme song, you can kinda see rooms like a kitchen, sleeping quarters, possibly a med bay, in a sense, they visually answered your question!), and the ship is obviously advanced enough to have some sorta oxygen/anti gravity thing on there (honestly, this answer can be good for anyone who watches sci-fi like Star Wars or Star Trek, or anything involving a big ship in space and has similar questions, they simply have the technology to do so, so relax). The Mads obviously want their test subject to live!
The intros that I remember the most are the ones with Godzilla sliding on the ground with his tail from Godzilla vs. Megalon & the one with the Gillman floating underwater from Revenge of the Creature.
I’ve been looking for a streaming service with all the season 1-10 episodes becuase damn, when you think about it this show has a lot of lore for a show where they spend a majority of the episode riffing bad movies. Like I can’t watch the episodes in order anywhere and I just watch this and the few unorganized episodes on tubi and UA-cam and I just see somehow we go from Joel being in the SOL after tv’s frank and dr forester shot him up there and somehow becomes about pearl chasing mike and the bots through space sending them the movies from a castle on some planet. And she has some weird henchman guys. It makes you think

This show was ahead of its time it feels like a web series from the early 2000s but it's from the late 80s to mid 90s

I always like the "rawness" of season 0 - I was in 8th grade when this aired locally.
The first time I saw this show was on a Saturday night on PBS a year ago. It was plenty nice. I wish they still aired it on GPB or PBA-30...

@@maddymooo I can kinda see Tom's new voice going for more of what Josh Weinstien did, but i honestly miss his 50's radio voice.
Crow has sounded the same throughout all of his voices, just with slightly different inflections. I can definitely tell Bill's Crow from Trace's and Hampton's and so on
I respect the decision to give Gypsy a legitimately female voice, but man, i still really love her loudmouth falsetto.

Is there anywhere I can find the non-movie riffing parts of this show? Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I kinda want to see the "plot" as it were of MST3K. -Like, what happened to Joel? Why did the Mads leave and get replaced? Where did Pearl come from?- These are the questions that keep me up at night.

Season 7 is the shortest, but also the funniest. Blood Beast is in my opinion the funniest episode, it's just non-stop amazing lines.

Because the producers admit they didn't like that work. It wasn't up to the standards they felt they should live up to after they did a national show.

When we got the last original seasons of MST3K, the voices for the Robots got more audible. I like the lines they throw out.

Okay, I have just watched this show. But there is one question: How does he eat and breathe? And there are other science facts.

Seriously though, there's probably a kitchen somewhere on the ship (in fact, if you see the doors during that line in the newest Netflix theme song, you can kinda see rooms like a kitchen, sleeping quarters, possibly a med bay, in a sense, they visually answered your question!), and the ship is obviously advanced enough to have some sorta oxygen/anti gravity thing on there (honestly, this answer can be good for anyone who watches sci-fi like Star Wars or Star Trek, or anything involving a big ship in space and has similar questions, they simply have the technology to do so, so relax). The Mads obviously want their test subject to live!
I forgot this got a reboot in 2017. Never watched it. I'm sure it's good but I'm fine with the classics

The intros that I remember the most are the ones with Godzilla sliding on the ground with his tail from Godzilla vs. Megalon & the one with the Gillman floating underwater from Revenge of the Creature.
Fun fact: the Cambot used in Season 1's intro was built from KTMA's Gypsy.

I’ve been looking for a streaming service with all the season 1-10 episodes becuase damn, when you think about it this show has a lot of lore for a show where they spend a majority of the episode riffing bad movies. Like I can’t watch the episodes in order anywhere and I just watch this and the few unorganized episodes on tubi and UA-cam and I just see somehow we go from Joel being in the SOL after tv’s frank and dr forester shot him up there and somehow becomes about pearl chasing mike and the bots through space sending them the movies from a castle on some planet. And she has some weird henchman guys. It makes you think
I love all the different ways the antagonist did the first LaLaLa and how Cambot kept getting upgrades
