Sean D. Daily Actually, it's a great concept and the movie could have been much better than the *Matrix* if it had, you know, been better written, directed, and acted. But then again, I'm a massive Phil Dick fan.
Arkadia Moon: Hmmm... Well, if you put more of a Dick spin on it, then yeah: more faceless corporation ziggurats and less large sweating Shakespearean actors. I'd have to see it to believe it, though. You do get points for being a Dick fan, though.
Sean D. Daily I don't mind Raul Julia going Large Ham; it was virtually his professional speciality, after all. But the Chairman seemed fiercely determined to leave the marks of his teeth on every scrap of scenery in sight. He went full ham. Never go full ham. At least not when you're playing against Raul Julia, because no film could ever be big enough for that. I had to double-check that it *wasn't* based on a Dick story I'd somehow missed (the original was written by John Varley), because it seemed to have Phil's fingerprints all over it: as you say, the omnipotent corporate colossus, &c. It'd be really interesting to see a present-day attempt by more accomplished professionals to re-do this from go.
Arkadia Moon: I'm surprised it hasn't be rebooted and then rebooted _again_ yet. Hollywood seems to have rebooted everything else... I'm supposed to be a Dick fan, so why didn't I see Dick's fingerprints all over this? I mean, yeah, he didn't _write_ it, but it certainly uses a lot of Dick themes. Maybe it was the general public broadcasting vibe. Public broadcasting doesn't do faceless corporations and cold-sweat-soaked musings on the nature of identity and reality. Public broadcasting does _Downton Abbey._ You're right. Properly rewritten, and stripped of all its PBS DNA, it _could_ be all right. I'd like to see an independent studio do this. I'm afraid Hollywood would make it either too pretty or too _Dark Knight,_ and the _production notes..._
+Sean D. Daily uh, yeah...as a huge PKD fan the title alone should set off alarms...We Can Remember it for You Wholesale...come on, even the protagonist's name is PKD goofy...the Matrix is Dickian sci fi so you were on the right track at least lol
So , in this “ super futuristic “ reality, where computers literally run the world...they keep track of massively important surgeries with color coded pieces of cardboard ?
When the gang starts pouring in the wheeze, fart and burp noises when Fat Man has his speech by the pool; I literally laughed to the point of tears while hunched over. Goddamn.
This is definitely one of the best MST3K episodes ever made. I had to rewind every few minutes because I was laughing too hard to hear what was going on.
After years of hearing great things about this show, I am SO glad I decided to sit down and watch an episode. Not even 5 minutes in and I’m cracking up.
What's that? Leaving people with open skulls and exposed brains in a strictly closed area of a mental institution/rehabilitation center where the entire lives of the people within depend on the outcomes of their experiences during a highly questionable and probably dangerous procedure? LET'S LET KIDS IN!!!
Being a UK fan of this show pre UA-cam days meant multi region dvd players and importing dvds over. Nowadays it's even easier than ever to keep circulating the tapes
Every time, I forget just how on point every single line in this movie is! I was constantly laughing from the second the intro credits began! Not to mention maybe my favorite sketch of the whole show, Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl!
What gets me every time I cue this episode up is how desperately Apollonia mishandles the situation when she's trying to keep Fingal pacified. If she'd identified herself immediately and basically said, "Um, you're gonna have to sit tight in the Matrix for a while, just chill in your room or something," the situation would probably have been defused. Instead she fuels Fingal's paranoia right from the start by pretending to be other people (a telephone operator, his mother) and delivering cryptic and very worrying messages. What the heck was that supposed to accomplish? Another thing: even though Novicorp and the "Fat Man" are supposed to be the bad guys, really they are _incredibly_ patient with Fingal when you think about it. He's doing a lot of damage, screwing up the world's weather and shit like that, but they're still willing to give him a chance at rescue. And why is he in this situation in the first place? Pissing around at work watching movies instead of doing his job. The film tries to pretend Fingal is some kind of rebel against an unjust system but he comes across like a spoiled, selfish asshole who ruins every chance given him.
+Monophylos Fortikos Also when she gets upset at him and the co-worker, it's like, 'what is your deal, lady? He's placated, and not prone to 'making waves' in the system.'
from what i understand, a lot of those elements are leftovers from the original short story (fingal was a voluntary dopple, appolonia could only communicate indirectly or via extraspecial circumstances, medical technology being refined and automated to the extent that working in health care is the same level as our fast food (hence Doby?), Fingal Time, the lack of any corporate angst etc)
Am I the only one who kind of likes this movie? I mean, without the riffs it might not fare so well with me, but with them, I find it pretty enjoyable to stumble through.
@RaceRed5.0Stang Isn't that basically how Uwe Boll came to be? Anyway, I have fond memories of WGBH shows from the '80s and early '90s, so I can't blame them for trying. There are a lot of factors to consider outside of funding sources.
I love Servo's take on those self righteous PBS watchers who think they're better than people who watch regular TV. "Go back to your 'Who's the Boss', you fascist!" Gets me every time :)
Very accurate depiction of local PBS pledge drives I remember from my childhood, except Pearl has a lot more charisma than the actual people who had no business being on television groveling for money for their television station.

So, technically, this movie is cyberpunk.
Really boring cyberpunk, yeah. Which makes it more realistic than most cyberpunk
So this is the PBS version of _The Matrix?_
Sean D. Daily
I don't mind Raul Julia going Large Ham; it was virtually his professional speciality, after all.
Public broadcasting does _Downton Abbey._
You're right.
"Were we just yelled at by a pork roast?"
The "So aging lesbian nuns run the future?" riff has to be one of my favorites in all of MST3K
I thought he said ”moms”
It's "We have 'The Matrix's at home" 😂 I love this episode so much ❤
So , in this “ super futuristic “ reality, where computers literally run the world...they keep track of massively important surgeries with color coded pieces of cardboard ?
Sadly, that may be the most realistic thing about this movie, actually...
And children molest patients on field trips.
The lowest bidder with the cheapest cost
Literally
Sounds about right honestly
36:10 "Mom, you died a long time ago, I haven't seen you in 15 years." (spoonful of soup)

Mm, homemade Swedish-Puerto Rican cooking

I had read this comment right before I got to that scene. That was priceless
"I guess this movie was kinda like watching Casablanca... while having a small child use your groin as a punching bag."
Hahahahaha!
10/10 comedy. ITS SO FUNNY WHEN YOU QUOTE THINGS FROM THE EPISODES.

Make that 99.
102 now! Dirty, filthy anteaters!
it doesn't matter, they probably only disliked it cuz of the movie itself.
*107 ANTEATERS !!!* @15:09 for anyone who doesn't get it
122 now, but really can you blame them.
I don't want to bungle or bobble the Fingal dopple
Definitely my favorite riff!
The telethon bits crack me up, I remember those shows on PBS when I was a kid all too well.
I was at a telethon that the horse whisperer was hosting, got to meet him and volunteer at the event.
@@lancevance47 What was he like
When the gang starts pouring in the wheeze, fart and burp noises when Fat Man has his speech by the pool; I literally laughed to the point of tears while hunched over. Goddamn.
The part during the credits where Mike was complaining about the horrible movie had me rolling
Literally
I'm 54 and fart jokes never get old. The one in Mitchell, my God. It ranks up there.

I LOVE YOU THIS MUUUUUCH!!

Even in this Piece of Crap Movie.
Raul Julia was still a Fantastic Actor.
Every actor has to make terrible films from time to time, but the trick is never to be terrible in them. - Christopher Lee

@@cryingclown83 Great quote! I wonder if Christopher Lee said this in regard to The Howling II
the empath loving joker haha you ain’t kiddin. Definitely a better movie choice
What was he doing in this piece of sh.... suuurely quality, quality programming
Just love the 80s educational video look of this movie.
Several MST3k episodes are freaking hilarious. And some shorts are fun to rewatch over and over again. This one is fun with the telethon.
My Top 5 MST3K's! My sides hurt from laughing! (and I've watched this over a dozen times!) LOL Thx for the share!
The absolute distain that Servo has for the techno-jargon is so subtle and it's so, so funny
"You must keep things normal. No surprises. Maintain the routine!"
To help with this I re-created his dead mother to help him.
You should really just relax.

Best line is during the blizzard scene: "This is how much pure cocaine you would need to enjoy this movie."
"See you on the darkside of Raul..."
Damned if that doesn't get me everytime...
One of my all time favorite MST3K's!
As cheesy as this was, it wasnt really that bad. Linda Griffiths and raul julia as always, exceptional actors. RIP both actors.
Raul Julia will always be a legend.
It was a TV movie, after all. TV movies in the day they made this, were all pretty much this way. Lol

Nowadays it's even easier than ever to keep circulating the tapes
This movie feels like it's missing Steve Buscemi for some reason.
There's quite a few movies that are missing Buscemi.
Steve Buscemi would make almost 100% of movies better just by being in them lol

This line kills me every time! omg 🤣

Every time, I forget just how on point every single line in this movie is! I was constantly laughing from the second the intro credits began!
Not to mention maybe my favorite sketch of the whole show, Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl!
I love Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! On public Pearl! Pptv !
The nature of Bobo 🎉
"I seem to have died, is that ok?" O LOL'd!!!!
Best line of the episode, I almost cried. Perfectly timed
+Monophylos Fortikos well im sure glad you weren't there to advise on any of these story lines.. because we would never have MST3k!
yea. what wayne said
+Monophylos Fortikos
Also when she gets upset at him and the co-worker, it's like, 'what is your deal, lady? He's placated, and not prone to 'making waves' in the system.'
from what i understand, a lot of those elements are leftovers from the original short story (fingal was a voluntary dopple, appolonia could only communicate indirectly or via extraspecial circumstances, medical technology being refined and automated to the extent that working in health care is the same level as our fast food (hence Doby?), Fingal Time, the lack of any corporate angst etc)
Yeah, her customer service skills ain't so good.
"I'd better call for a medico."
Tom: "Yeah, on the voice-com-flavo-link-synth-aaaaaaaach!!!"
12:27 “prophylactic rehab, fingal!” -they’re gonna retread his condom?
The short story this is from is really good. Fingle gets a degree in it gets a date at the end.
Am I the only one who kind of likes this movie? I mean, without the riffs it might not fare so well with me, but with them, I find it pretty enjoyable to stumble through.
I like it to. I find it a lot of fun and would love to see a remake.
Gary Williams
The remake was called "The Matrix".
Jack Shaw I wondered if anyone else had noticed they have basically the same plot.
And this is why PBS now imports movies from England instead of producing their own.
Although having seen such "masterpieces" as _The Projected Man_ I'm not sure that's an improvement.
If they can screw up as something as a movie type (yeah let’s call it a thing) I can see why.
I grew up watching those in the 80s & 90s... yeah, it's scary accurate
I used to live in the NYC area so I vividly remember the WNET/Channel 13 ones.
say what you will, "you almost god mustard on his brain!" is a GREAT line.
But still, the best thing in the movie are the spinning baboons.
I hate that scene, why are they letting some random asshole kids in lol. Nothing else bothers me in this movie
