I swear to god that video is still one of your all time best and maybe one of the most important real conversations still mostly relevant to what we've experienced so far. Please do a retrospective on that because it's insane how much it holds up and how you were right criticizing how far this game falls down when it just boils into going through the motions and the progress you're working towards is hazy.
Stagnation is death. Just look at Ubisoft, they've been resting on their open world - scale a tower to unlock map sections - raid a camp - don't worry about bugs formulafor over a decade and the chickens have come home to roost.

A lot of people in my clan have bounced permanently because of this. They just started asking themselves: why am I paying for content that isn't going to be here? Which, is a solid argument. Paying for content that literally evaporates over time is interesting.
Yeah I have a group of friends that just started playing ftp and it’s pretty hard to explain some lore questions they ask because it’s about content I haven’t played in 5+ years and even if they were to get the dlcs most of the stuff is not available. Even seasonal content it should at least be available to ftp players to an extent because how will they know if they like the new thing and want to invest without trying it
Everything about the monetization of Destiny 2 has always left me confused. People payed $60 for D2 at launch minimum, not counting the higher price versions, and then later on they went free to play? They had yearly large dlc/updates (Forsaken/the stasis one/Witch Queen/Lightfall) that also cost $60-$100+, and over time these became required to be able to play any of the "current" story content? And correct me if I'm wrong, but do you still HAVE to buy Forsaken to play the "current" content, even if that content isn't even going to be in the game and unplayable AFTER you buy it?
100 seemed doable. It wasn't really that much of an insurmountable number. I've played my fair share of RPGs in my day, and I'm used to 100 being the "end cap" of a leveling curve, even if I rarely ever grind to that point in every RPG I play. Completing a season pass feels less possible now, which triggers the "Why bother, what's the point?" part of my thought process, as well as the "I like being a completionist, but I'm not *diamond* enough to collect everything" pattern I learned from games like Kingdom of Loathing to shrug off FOMO. That thought pattern and the "why bother?" becomes a self-reinforcing loop that pushes me away from the game, making completing the pass an even more insurmountable obstacle. I'm not paying for pass ranks, Bungie.

The Destiny universe still has so much potential for great storytelling beyond the Witness. The fact that we still haven’t seen Xivu Arath face to face is crazy to me.
imo destiny is better when you don't know what the villain looks like. the witness lost 99% of his excitement as soon as we saw him. savathun was WAY scarier when you had to imagine what she looked like. the pyramid ships were more intriguing before we went in, very little in destiny history matches that "holy shit" feeling turning the corner in shadowkeep and coming face to face with our first one. destiny NEEDS some grand lovecraftian mystery. they've killed off almost all of it in the last couple of years.
Tbh I feel like if they focused less on story and cutscenes, they could put more effort into the actual activities that will keep players coming back. The story should be an afterthought from now on.
@@rpemulisI think we need a balance to both Having a face for our villain definitely adds to their presence and gives us something to face, the big reason people hate D1’s main story is because there is no face to the villain, it was just “the darkness” But at the same time, showing our villain too much ruins their presence, Oryx and the Witness struck the perfect balance I feel for what their roles were

I feel like a vast majority of most peoples loss of interest really is the fact that it's no longer "I'm so invested I have to finish it" and now that's pretty much gone
"Friends that play together, stay together". Sadly my closest D2 friends stopped playing, and for a while I kept going with match making, but as it is now I've taken perhaps the longest break from D2 to date (pretty much stopped soon after the last DLC). Good thing is that I now spend WAY less time playing games, and for the past 6 months I've gotten physically healthier and stronger than I have been in MANY years (I'm obsessed with cycling again!).
my longest break was between lightfall and into the light, where the game just felt boring to me and I had no desire at all to play, and I personally put in a lot of hours into destiny during ITL but after playing final shape and seeing how echoes is? man I have no desire at all to play this sameish content again after that campaign. i have no desire to chase weapons when they're all sidegrades to one another, the story is uninteresting, even exotic weapons just look kinda meh, i'm probably not coming back with frontiers even with all they're promising unless it's something that will truly revolutionize the game
I left after the conclusion of Final Shape. I was finally happy with how the story ended, and did not wished anything that came after to taint how I felt about It. Glad to know I was right.
I've been absolutely adoring these 5 week breaks i get to have between all the acts the past few episodes, because i can finally have the time to play anything else, and that almost feels sad to say but hey if bungie wants to keep me in they need to engage in making replayability fun. And with all this free time i've actually taken up learning how to draw just straight up from scratch and learning my fundamentals. And i've been going strong the past 21 weeks (130+ days), its not all great the things ive done but at least THATS my job now i work on whenever i feel, instead of waking up and dreading farming destiny content
I think what makes me feel really shitty was seeing The Final Shape hit all the right notes, and then all the layoffs happening anyway, that was extremely demoralizing
For real. I had just managed to convince friends to return to the game after streaming it to them in Discord... they bowed out the second the second round of layoffs happened. I still love Destiny 2. the series in general is special to me. But I stopped shortly after TFS since no frens and hearing how the game has gone since there... yeah... its rough
It really did give everything a certain sense of… pardon the pun, finality to it. Like, it’s one thing to close a major, decade-long story in Destiny, but all the layoffs and changes that happened around that time really sealed it for me.
On one hand community cries the game is monetized trying to make money and then cries when the game doesn't make money so they cut back staff. Most toxic community.

Complainers aren't spending money anyways revenue hits are from bungie's awful handling of expectations. the people complaining about monetization aren't buying anything anyways, so they don't really move the needle. What does move the needle and hurt revenue is releasing a dlc as bad as lightfall so bad that even though final shape was great it sold worse than light fall because sentiment around the game and layoffs and marathon they shot themselves in the foot. Especially considering nobody not even the devs themselves are confident in marathon, but they've been siphoning money and devs into it.
Appreciate the vulnerability, brother. Your videos have always been enjoyable to me, and I still find myself watching them just to support you and see what’s going on even if I don’t play Destiny anymore. As a day one D1 beta player, Destiny was the most fun I’ve ever had on a game, and despite not being an active player anymore or feeling compelled to pick it up, I am still rooting for it to be fun for the people that still enjoy it and play it regularly. I used to be pretty evenly split between warframe and destiny but I've completely moved over to warframe and destiny is gone from my hard drive destiny has been stagnating for years, taking no risks and feeling very samey year over year DE takes a bunch of risks and does a bunch of wild new gameplay elements doesn't always land, but helps the game feel fresh every year

Its just sad watching destiny 2 go like this. Played it since middle school till graduating high school. ( Forsaken - Final shape) Had some good and some bad. Watching it slow go like this due to mutiple reasons just hurts. Its like seeing someone you love go down the wrong path in life. The Communities negative sentiment does not help. But at the same time its hard to blame them. They are all just tired and disappointment. I hope it makes a come back so I can play again. I hope everyone is doing great. Lets be honest, the likelihood that the Dreadnaught in Episode Three will be a destination as opposed to just the location of a 10-15 match-made activity is super low. I hope im wrong but i highly doubt we are getting the Dreadnaught as a full fledged destination like it was in D1
The company behind it has harmed the game the most. I left the game a long time ago. Yeah, the community can be toxic, but no more than how bad the game has been neglected until there's no other choice but to do something that somewhat justifies the amount of money that it generates. They go hand in hand. Also, echo chambers from relative minorities aren't representative of the whole. If the player counts drop so much, it's because even casuals that tend to play for fun are leaving because they're not satisfied with the state of the game. Datto has grown bitter, and its understandable, but what's done the most harm is def not the community.
@@RemedieX Absolutely wrong. You can have a game get literally 0 updates and if the fanbase is good, it will keep on living. However, for Bungie, they have a fanbase full of people who don't know what they want and when they listen to them, they get burnt because the fans don't actually like what they say they like. Bungie gave out free god rolls of endgame weapons due to a bug and people STILL complained! Yeah Bungie had to layoff people, they tried to scale at a faster rate because in all honesty, Destiny SHOULD be a huge game, but due to the toxic fans and the meme of "destiny bad omegelul" they didn't meet the mark and had to cut down people. The fanbase will be the death of the game. Hopefully bungie can shift to a new title or rebranding in order to get sales again.

I've been playing for ten years. I was happy with the ending, and I'd be completely fine if Bungie goes maintenance mode and completely undoes sunsetting so that there is a full game you can just play as you want. It won't happen, but I've had countless hours of enjoyment from this game for 7 years. I'm good with moving on if I'm bored of the content. But I'm always gonna have my eyes on the game That rant on the community is so relatable lmao. It's how I've felt about the online gaming community as a whole for a few years now.

My comment on the crafted weapons - People want a goal, and end point. Grinding aimlessly for a 5-5 might make some of the playerbase moist, but god, there's only so many times i can see bad rolls before i'm tired of the same activities. If there was more to do, to get more rewards, then maybe it'd be okay for no crafting, but the way the game is, i'm tired of most activities before i've got all red borders.
Most of these folks doesn’t realized an average 25 years old destiny player is 35 now and have a different approach towards the game and less to dedicate to a game
It's not just that they removed crafting, they also made random rolls harder to get. I have god rolls of all the non-craftable reprised weapons from previous seasons just from collecting seasonal engrams in the background and then focusing them when I have a full stack of 99. Play whatever you want, still get loot. Now you have to play seasonal activities exclusively for ingredients, then go craft tonics, then remember to activate the tonic. So many hoops to jump through for no reason.
My view on crafting is that the seasonal weapons are literally the only things that are left once the season/episode cycle is over. It is the one thing that people can grind for and have left over once the next expansion hits. Sunsetting and removing content from the game may have had its reasons for game stability and such but it has done so much damage to Destiny. When you can no longer go back to grind for a weapon because a seasonal cycle happened to end it makes me care less about the RNG grind for guns overall. Especially since their balance team is so focused on balancing a power fantasy game that perks get gutted and changed after a period of time and all the god rolls you grinded for in the past are no longer as good. Crafted weapons at least allow you to edit that weapon and put new perks on when that balancing change comes. All in all, I no longer care to grind random rolled weapons or play the game because so much in the game changes dramatically, that it feels like the game has no respect for the effort or time you put into the gear chase. Crafted patterns are pretty much the only thing people have left to consistently keep over time besides armor, and even that is being changed yet again this summer.
@@malachite6056When Bungie announced they were nerfing High Ground on pulse rifles, I immediately felt sorry for all the people who were gridning Gambit for a Bygones with High Ground. Then I realized that if they'd hit High Ground on a crafted weapon, it would take one minute to change the perk for a new one.

I agree. I think that it’s been so long that most people just aren’t excited for the same activities they’ve been doing for years on end. With this in mind I think whatever frontiers is needs to be a huge shake up, like a Destiny 3 level shakeup to reset everyone’s internal fatigue and start fresh. I don’t know whether this will happen but if they give us back the old tower from D1 as a new hub (which they’ve hinted at for a few years now with it being under construction/repair) that would be a good sign. There were also rumors of them getting rid of classes and subclasses a while ago, which would also help shake things up. P.S. I also think that it really does not help that this episode just objectively sucks. The changes to timing and crafting, as well as tonics falling flat really are not helping things and I wonder how much of an issue this would be if this episode could stand on its own.
Been playing since Year 1 of D1. I used to be the guy who went flawless in all the raids, solo flawless in all the dungeons, ran hundreds of GMs for god roll adepts, hell, I'm even one of the few Reckoners out there, but during season of plunder I decided I "need a break." After that I came back for Lightfall and upon finishing the campaign I decided it just wasn't time to come back yet. I signed on for a raid every couple of months just to hang out with my crew, but I was never "back". After finishing Final Shape and the raid and that last mission I can't remember the name of right now I decided my Destiny journey was over. It's been 10 years. The only way I can see myself coming back is if they ever release Destiny 3. If that never happens, then I'm not going to lose any sleep knowing that part of my life is behind me. I've met so many cool people and had so many great times, but the game just isn't what it used to be anymore. Whenever I boot up the game I instantly feel tired. That's not a relationship that should be had with a video game. Games are supposed to be fun. This just isn't anymore.
6:25 oh man I would love it if certain patrol zones changed and eere updated after certain seasons. It would feel like the world is changing and would be fun to see how much areas would be different after years of playing.

worst part of destiny is the community tbh. i can deal with bugs and dry content because it’ll be better by the summer. the community at large though? annoying. draining. it’s crazy how many hate the game and still play it
The Destiny community is great and awful at the same time, fans and fair-weather content creators alike. I truly cannot stand this level of negativity even if I have similar thoughts. There's nothing wrong with having negative thoughts, but negativity sells well so chase that bag I guess? I have some faith that Bungie can pull their collective heads out of their asses, but I stand by that the upper management needs to go. They do not care and it shows.
I always take month long breaks with Destiny and I find that really really helps. I know for someone like Datto, that might not be possible because of what his community wants. But it’s healthy and every time I come back, even if nothing is happening, I just enjoy the game waaaaay more.
That's how I've been playing since Destiny 1. The game doesn't have the depth to keep people engaged day-in, day-out for months on end. Unfortunately for content creators, that's kind of their product model, so they're forced to keep playing. Even worse, those same content creators end up having the loudest voices, so if they're not happy with the "lack of content", much of the community adopts the same opinion, even if they've never even played a third of the content available themselves.
I think that's how most people actually play. Older crowd with jobs or just busy life. Who I don't think really go in comment sections or chats. But it does seem the majority of the online community is very dramatic, whose opinions will change about the game depending on how the creator feels.
alot of people wish to be youtubers but man its the worst when you become famous covering one game and be stuck to that one game, we all have the privilege of stopping and playing other stuff whenever we want but some youtubers are just stuck playing the same thing and wont get any success doing other games
i was such a commited destiny fan playing every day with 6k hours in d1 and d2 together. since revenant released ive been getting a lot of crashes especially in the new dunegon like every 10mins. this was a kind of wakeup call for me. And now im thinking if im ever gonna come back to a game that just eats so much time and has so much fomo. i really loved the journey i had in destiny but i think for me its time to put it to rest. im still gonna play a bit casually when new stuff releases but wont be grinding anything or care about fomo. all my friends left the game anyways and alone it gets stale quickly.
The Destiny 2 launch and Curse of Osiris were received so poorly that if there wasn't an immediate turnaround, the franchise would've come to an end. You've got to wonder how close that is of reoccurring. My heart goes out to all the developers who worry of a 3rd wave of layoffs. I pray it doesn't come to that.
Datto I feel ya man. It’s not just Destiny’s community. Any kind of community where nerds congregate have been behaving the same way for over ten years and it’s exhausting.
I just think ALOT of us had the time of our lives with Final Shape, had our moment, and jumped ship. I have roughly 7000+ hours in the franchise, and the game at one point was my second home. I haven't played even a second, not even logged on since August, but I hold no ill will or resentment towards this game or towards the devs - no one should hold ill will towards the devs, they want this game to be better than any of us. At this point now, I just appreciate what we had for those 10 years, the memories we made, and if another story comes up on the near horizon, you'll bet I will come check it out. This isn't quite apathy like many felt during Lightfall - for me, it's peace.
Love ya, Datto, you do such good work and I bet it doesn’t always feel appreciated, but it is. You are the way I keep up with Destiny when I take my long breaks, and I’ve been enjoying your Rogue gameplays a lot so just keep going man. Self-improvement is a life-long journey
The one thing that made me stop playing a lot: The "battlepass" time-gating at 100, 150, and 200 and none of the XP you earned in that time being retroactive and applying to the next act. That was a REALLY dumb decision imo.
I just kind of ignored it since the pass essentially auto completes if you do even 1/2 the seasonal challenges, plus you still get all the freebie engrams after level 100 so no XP is really getting wasted.
My friend convinced me, after months of assaulting my mind with subliminal messages, to try out D2 back in late 2018. It was the most fun i've ever had playing the game and the only game that I played the most. I loved doing challenges, going for exotic quests, collecting weapons and playing the activities. But, as the years went on and with how the game progressed, it became less of having fun and more of a 9-5 job. you log in, do meaningless quests, grind some gear, and get off. After the fiasco with lightfall, i just wanted the game to end already. I played TFS campaign, maybe did some prismatic stuff but i reached my breaking point and left this game for good... and it saddens me because this game was something truly special. Tysm for the content that you've brought datto, i truly enjoyed your guides and i'll continue to stick around on youtube. To the guardians that are playing this game, I salute you. You might've been my raid m8 or we ran into each other in a pub or activity and i just wanna say, it was an honor playing with you all. o7

After playing 150ish hours of POE it reminded me how good it feels just roaming through the maps and at anytime a piece of gear can drop that could possibly take your build to the next level. I can't remember the last time I got that feeling playing destiny in years

Every time I need a guide, I specifically search YOUR channel for that guide. My Wife and I both. Your content is the best content. This video feels like it came from the HEART. Like it was an emotional one to post. Love ya dude. I have thousands of hours of destiny 2 and I never went a day without playing. But the last several months I've been so far behind and just don't have the urge to play this game anymore. I'm just now starting the tonics stuff and getting frustrated with it. but I'm trying. Because I loved this game since D1 alpha (I literally have videos of me wasting a whole nova bomb on an already dead player on this channel from the D1 alpha days) and I HATE that I switched to PC before the cross save and got SOOOOOOO far ahead and found out I'll never be able to wear that emblem from laser tag weekend that I took part in, and had a blast. My Wife and I both laughing our butts off as everybody melted in the crucible. My old playstation account has that damn emblem on, but I'd have to un cross save, and lose divinity and everything just to have an emblem. Anyways, I watch almost every youtube video and tune into your twitch stream when I can. I hope something good happens soon with this game. The most fun I've ever had in this game was 12 man raids, and the recent craziness... Auto rifles being machine guns and shotguns and melting everything so stinking fast.

They killed my motivation to play after crafting got removed from newer weapons and it's same with my friends . There are way better " fun " games to play on market than spend 100 hours grinding a god roll that may drop doing tedious tasks.

Honestly, Datto. I hope you and all the other content creators can get a restful break away from this madness. You guys don't deserve to be caught in this crapstorm. You've all done as much as you can now, and it would mean as much if you can catch a breather. Best wishes to you, man. Though, if I can put a thought out to anyone bold enough to read this bottom part: Thankfully, it's been regarded by the deeper community that Destiny 3 won't happen, which is a good thing. We don't need that. We just need an honest full two-three months of just slow and methodical bug fixes and updates. No need for new content that people will complain about anyways. Personally, I pray the remaining and newer devs in Bungie eventually learn how to be like Digital Extremes and work with the community (the part that isn't full of vocal retards) to find that balance everyone loves about Destiny. Though, that might not happen, and it's only a matter of time before either the community unanimously leaves or Bungie gets shut down. Either one will happen - not "if", but "when". It's hard when we can't get a straight answer from Bungie, but it's even harder when the most vocal part of the community is actively attacking Bungie for literally anything they do. We all want Destiny to live up as long as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14 or whatever else: We want the game to be fun again. I'll still be here in Heresy and Frontiers until the server shuts down, even if my clan dies. I can only help as many people who want to be helped in sherpas and vaultcleans. I'm just praying there's peace beyond the veil. Edit: I'm all up for just returning all the removed content, I can stand by that part of the community shouts. I never got to finish Red War or play the other content. I know hardware space and gigabites are limited on everyone's computers/consoles, but having *all* the content (or at least the most important parts) would mean something. The removal of content (even for the space) doesn't help anything other than make people upset that they missed content. That's my only contribution to the fire. Otherwise, I'll keep quiet and wait to see where this all leads.

As a 10year destiny veteran, I can confidently say that Destiny has not earned another year from me, Bungie has not earned another year from me, and I couldn’t care less about Marathon.
Been here since day 1 of D1 and it honestly sucks that this feels like the end of everything. The grind just isn’t there for me anymore. Really hope they can bring the game back
Its good to feel this. This is how the marvel fans felt after endgame. The best stories been told, the big bads been beaten. Everything post endgame has been a downhill spiral of content. Same with this game.
The funny thing is that in both cases the biggest bad hasn’t been beat. They just wholeheartedly believe that no one’s gonna leave their projects at this point
@@helengavigan6568 Destiny will not have a bigger bad, at least based on the information we have available now. The winnower is not a foe to be fought, and according to Bungie they're not even supposed to be a big part of the story going forward.
The 'community' gets worse year after year. The Destiny Circlejerk subreddit was my method of staying sane, but I had to basically stop going to Destiny related subreddits. I don't think even Tom Christie's Skeletor really captures the breadth and depth of the hyperbole at this point.
I'm glad you mentioned the Joe Blackburn Reddit post, that one broke me for trying to hear the cringe destiny deserves to die posts that are top of DestinytheGame every day. If it means anything, thank you for being a positive creator in the space. There's only a couple people left i stay subscribed to on destiny, and you're the best of them all!
Datto, a lot of us have been following you for 10 years now. I can’t speak for everyone but i’m burnt out of Destiny too. You should be able to move forward with content YOU enjoy making, me & the others that are here for YOU will follow. It’s not 2014 anymore, Destiny has had its time in the sunlight.
My personal biggest issue is how WANK the story has been for episode one and two. We were told the episodes would have wrapped up loose ends when, in reality, they’ve pretty much just made more. I wanted to see what they’d do with the lingering Vex and their story but instead we got an (almost) entirely new villain that has nothing to do with the greater Vex lore. What we got from episode two was less Scorn focused (with WAYYYYYY less Crow and Fikrul than it should have had) and more Eramis slop as if it wasn’t super clear the vast majority of people flat out do not care for the character at all. They’ve yet to truly fuck up the Hive stuff so I’m still actually looking forward to Heresy but I really hope they don’t try to do something subversive there and instead just give us good spooky space magic stuff. It’s what I’ve still got faith in for this game.

Shadowshot is STILL disabled in Vesper's Host. That dungeon came out October 11. That's 3 months of one of the class defining supers being completely unavailable in a piece of paid content. Absolutely ridiculous
You're always going to find complainers, thats just a human interaction thing, but Bungie doesn't make it easy to latch onto the 2 things they do relatively okay when you have to sit next to the giant pile of maneur that is the rest of the repetitive game that majority o your community doesn't want/like to play.
I hopped back into the Division 2 recently, turns out it's still been getting updates and content drops. The loot grind there is great and each build/armor set definitely feels unique and well developed. It made me realize that Destiny 2 loot just lacks depth. Our weapons have the type/frame and then really just 2 perks that dictate gameplay. The armor literally doesn't matter once you get a good enough roll for 95% of your builds so there's just no reason to get loot anymore. Really hoping the Frontier's update brings back the feel of loot being unique and fun to chase. Thanks for all your vids Datto, you're a great voice in this community!
Div 2 is also getting another story expansion soon finally, Can’t wait tbh. Assume it’ll lead into more depending on how well received or it’ll lead on and set the story for div 3

I think the community needs a colletive break from Destiny 2. I did not play a lot of Destiny, outside of Vesper's Host for a few months, but when I got back into the game, I was like: "Why did I stop playing? This is so much fun."

The problem with content creation as a career is that it relies on the popularity of the content. I see your burnout, I see how low your mental state is. And I'll be blunt. YOU are the only one that can change that. You cannot tie yourself to one ship, especially if it is at risk of sinking. Variety will help you create a safety net for yourself AND avoid burnout. The human mind craves change, after all. Stop being affected by the thoughts of the community. Any sports therapist will tell you that negative conversations are ALWAYS louder than positive ones. You need to be able to ignore opinions, even if they're valid. And you need to find a way to decompress. It's hard being the face, mind and mouth of your own career. This may be an unwanted comment that goes missed amongst 2000 other comments but I feel compelled to throw it out there into the void. I think your youtube content is excellent a lot of the time. I think the fact that you even use a script is a big deal. It's the difference between budgeting your time and making an outline for your essay and writing it the night before powered by hopes and dreams. You might be really good at long form video essay style content and maybe you' would enjoy it? I have no idea, just a thought that came to me while watching the video and procrastinating my own essay writing....
Datto - I say this with love, and as someone who played the game since Alpha D1. Destiny is over dude. It ended with The Final Shape. The episodes structure is an extended epilogue. I know Destiny's done so much for you over the years, more than anyone could comprehend, but the game is kaput. Don't force yourself to play it man. We love *you*, not Destiny. We'll follow you wherever you go.
I think an easy but massive "W" that Bungie could do is just make transmog free and simple. Get a piece of armor, it's instantly available to equip as an ornament. No bounties, no class-specific currency. Just free transmog, because no matter what kind of player you are, everyone loves fashion.

A lot of people in my clan have bounced permanently because of this. They just started asking themselves: why am I paying for content that isn't going to be here? Which, is a solid argument. Paying for content that literally evaporates over time is interesting.
Yeah I have a group of friends that just started playing ftp and it’s pretty hard to explain some lore questions they ask because it’s about content I haven’t played in 5+ years and even if they were to get the dlcs most of the stuff is not available. Even seasonal content it should at least be available to ftp players to an extent because how will they know if they like the new thing and want to invest without trying it
The only way Destiny can be revived in my eyes is a Destiny 3. There is no possible way to innovate d2 that would bring me back. Nothing.

Everything about the monetization of Destiny 2 has always left me confused. People payed $60 for D2 at launch minimum, not counting the higher price versions, and then later on they went free to play? They had yearly large dlc/updates (Forsaken/the stasis one/Witch Queen/Lightfall) that also cost $60-$100+, and over time these became required to be able to play any of the "current" story content? And correct me if I'm wrong, but do you still HAVE to buy Forsaken to play the "current" content, even if that content isn't even going to be in the game and unplayable AFTER you buy it?
The battlepass being extended, timegated, and quite literally halting progression was such a massive motivation killer for me

100 seemed doable. It wasn't really that much of an insurmountable number. I've played my fair share of RPGs in my day, and I'm used to 100 being the "end cap" of a leveling curve, even if I rarely ever grind to that point in every RPG I play.
Completing a season pass feels less possible now, which triggers the "Why bother, what's the point?" part of my thought process, as well as the "I like being a completionist, but I'm not *diamond* enough to collect everything" pattern I learned from games like Kingdom of Loathing to shrug off FOMO.
That thought pattern and the "why bother?" becomes a self-reinforcing loop that pushes me away from the game, making completing the pass an even more insurmountable obstacle.
I'm not paying for pass ranks, Bungie.

The Destiny universe still has so much potential for great storytelling beyond the Witness. The fact that we still haven’t seen Xivu Arath face to face is crazy to me.

imo destiny is better when you don't know what the villain looks like. the witness lost 99% of his excitement as soon as we saw him. savathun was WAY scarier when you had to imagine what she looked like. the pyramid ships were more intriguing before we went in, very little in destiny history matches that "holy shit" feeling turning the corner in shadowkeep and coming face to face with our first one.
destiny NEEDS some grand lovecraftian mystery. they've killed off almost all of it in the last couple of years.
Tbh I feel like if they focused less on story and cutscenes, they could put more effort into the actual activities that will keep players coming back. The story should be an afterthought from now on.

Having a face for our villain definitely adds to their presence and gives us something to face, the big reason people hate D1’s main story is because there is no face to the villain, it was just “the darkness”
But at the same time, showing our villain too much ruins their presence, Oryx and the Witness struck the perfect balance I feel for what their roles were

"Friends that play together, stay together". Sadly my closest D2 friends stopped playing, and for a while I kept going with match making, but as it is now I've taken perhaps the longest break from D2 to date (pretty much stopped soon after the last DLC).
Good thing is that I now spend WAY less time playing games, and for the past 6 months I've gotten physically healthier and stronger than I have been in MANY years (I'm obsessed with cycling again!).
I quit gaming hardcore once I became a father. It has opened my eyes to a lot to say the least.
my longest break was between lightfall and into the light, where the game just felt boring to me and I had no desire at all to play, and I personally put in a lot of hours into destiny during ITL
but after playing final shape and seeing how echoes is? man I have no desire at all to play this sameish content again after that campaign. i have no desire to chase weapons when they're all sidegrades to one another, the story is uninteresting, even exotic weapons just look kinda meh, i'm probably not coming back with frontiers even with all they're promising unless it's something that will truly revolutionize the game

I left after the conclusion of Final Shape. I was finally happy with how the story ended, and did not wished anything that came after to taint how I felt about It. Glad to know I was right.
I've been absolutely adoring these 5 week breaks i get to have between all the acts the past few episodes, because i can finally have the time to play anything else, and that almost feels sad to say but hey if bungie wants to keep me in they need to engage in making replayability fun. And with all this free time i've actually taken up learning how to draw just straight up from scratch and learning my fundamentals. And i've been going strong the past 21 weeks (130+ days), its not all great the things ive done but at least THATS my job now i work on whenever i feel, instead of waking up and dreading farming destiny content

It really did give everything a certain sense of… pardon the pun, finality to it. Like, it’s one thing to close a major, decade-long story in Destiny, but all the layoffs and changes that happened around that time really sealed it for me.
On one hand community cries the game is monetized trying to make money and then cries when the game doesn't make money so they cut back staff. Most toxic community.

the people complaining about monetization aren't buying anything anyways, so they don't really move the needle. What does move the needle and hurt revenue is releasing a dlc as bad as lightfall so bad that even though final shape was great it sold worse than light fall because sentiment around the game and layoffs and marathon they shot themselves in the foot. Especially considering nobody not even the devs themselves are confident in marathon, but they've been siphoning money and devs into it.
Appreciate the vulnerability, brother. Your videos have always been enjoyable to me, and I still find myself watching them just to support you and see what’s going on even if I don’t play Destiny anymore. As a day one D1 beta player, Destiny was the most fun I’ve ever had on a game, and despite not being an active player anymore or feeling compelled to pick it up, I am still rooting for it to be fun for the people that still enjoy it and play it regularly. We felt the effect of firing the QA testers and it was BAD. QA testers are important and Bungie especially needed them with how bad things have gotten

Warframe really opened my eyes to how much progress can be made in 10 years. Destiny seems like only 2 years of progress.
I used to be pretty evenly split between warframe and destiny but I've completely moved over to warframe and destiny is gone from my hard drive

Lets be honest, the likelihood that the Dreadnaught in Episode Three will be a destination as opposed to just the location of a 10-15 match-made activity is super low. I hope im wrong but i highly doubt we are getting the Dreadnaught as a full fledged destination like it was in D1

The company behind it has harmed the game the most. I left the game a long time ago. Yeah, the community can be toxic, but no more than how bad the game has been neglected until there's no other choice but to do something that somewhat justifies the amount of money that it generates. They go hand in hand.
Also, echo chambers from relative minorities aren't representative of the whole. If the player counts drop so much, it's because even casuals that tend to play for fun are leaving because they're not satisfied with the state of the game. Datto has grown bitter, and its understandable, but what's done the most harm is def not the community.

However, for Bungie, they have a fanbase full of people who don't know what they want and when they listen to them, they get burnt because the fans don't actually like what they say they like. Bungie gave out free god rolls of endgame weapons due to a bug and people STILL complained! Yeah Bungie had to layoff people, they tried to scale at a faster rate because in all honesty, Destiny SHOULD be a huge game, but due to the toxic fans and the meme of "destiny bad omegelul" they didn't meet the mark and had to cut down people.
The fanbase will be the death of the game. Hopefully bungie can shift to a new title or rebranding in order to get sales again.

I've been playing for ten years. I was happy with the ending, and I'd be completely fine if Bungie goes maintenance mode and completely undoes sunsetting so that there is a full game you can just play as you want.
It won't happen, but I've had countless hours of enjoyment from this game for 7 years. I'm good with moving on if I'm bored of the content. But I'm always gonna have my eyes on the game

My comment on the crafted weapons - People want a goal, and end point. Grinding aimlessly for a 5-5 might make some of the playerbase moist, but god, there's only so many times i can see bad rolls before i'm tired of the same activities. If there was more to do, to get more rewards, then maybe it'd be okay for no crafting, but the way the game is, i'm tired of most activities before i've got all red borders.
Most of these folks doesn’t realized an average 25 years old destiny player is 35 now and have a different approach towards the game and less to dedicate to a game
Not to mention the weightgate fallout, namely how players cannot even have faith in random rolls being fair
It's not just that they removed crafting, they also made random rolls harder to get. I have god rolls of all the non-craftable reprised weapons from previous seasons just from collecting seasonal engrams in the background and then focusing them when I have a full stack of 99. Play whatever you want, still get loot. Now you have to play seasonal activities exclusively for ingredients, then go craft tonics, then remember to activate the tonic. So many hoops to jump through for no reason.
My view on crafting is that the seasonal weapons are literally the only things that are left once the season/episode cycle is over.
It is the one thing that people can grind for and have left over once the next expansion hits.
Sunsetting and removing content from the game may have had its reasons for game stability and such but it has done so much damage to Destiny. When you can no longer go back to grind for a weapon because a seasonal cycle happened to end it makes me care less about the RNG grind for guns overall. Especially since their balance team is so focused on balancing a power fantasy game that perks get gutted and changed after a period of time and all the god rolls you grinded for in the past are no longer as good. Crafted weapons at least allow you to edit that weapon and put new perks on when that balancing change comes.
All in all, I no longer care to grind random rolled weapons or play the game because so much in the game changes dramatically, that it feels like the game has no respect for the effort or time you put into the gear chase.
Crafted patterns are pretty much the only thing people have left to consistently keep over time besides armor, and even that is being changed yet again this summer.
@@malachite6056When Bungie announced they were nerfing High Ground on pulse rifles, I immediately felt sorry for all the people who were gridning Gambit for a Bygones with High Ground. Then I realized that if they'd hit High Ground on a crafted weapon, it would take one minute to change the perk for a new one.

I agree. I think that it’s been so long that most people just aren’t excited for the same activities they’ve been doing for years on end. With this in mind I think whatever frontiers is needs to be a huge shake up, like a Destiny 3 level shakeup to reset everyone’s internal fatigue and start fresh. I don’t know whether this will happen but if they give us back the old tower from D1 as a new hub (which they’ve hinted at for a few years now with it being under construction/repair) that would be a good sign. There were also rumors of them getting rid of classes and subclasses a while ago, which would also help shake things up.
P.S. I also think that it really does not help that this episode just objectively sucks. The changes to timing and crafting, as well as tonics falling flat really are not helping things and I wonder how much of an issue this would be if this episode could stand on its own.
Been playing since Year 1 of D1. I used to be the guy who went flawless in all the raids, solo flawless in all the dungeons, ran hundreds of GMs for god roll adepts, hell, I'm even one of the few Reckoners out there, but during season of plunder I decided I "need a break." After that I came back for Lightfall and upon finishing the campaign I decided it just wasn't time to come back yet. I signed on for a raid every couple of months just to hang out with my crew, but I was never "back". After finishing Final Shape and the raid and that last mission I can't remember the name of right now I decided my Destiny journey was over. It's been 10 years. The only way I can see myself coming back is if they ever release Destiny 3. If that never happens, then I'm not going to lose any sleep knowing that part of my life is behind me. I've met so many cool people and had so many great times, but the game just isn't what it used to be anymore. Whenever I boot up the game I instantly feel tired. That's not a relationship that should be had with a video game. Games are supposed to be fun. This just isn't anymore.

worst part of destiny is the community tbh. i can deal with bugs and dry content because it’ll be better by the summer. the community at large though? annoying. draining. it’s crazy how many hate the game and still play it
The Destiny community is great and awful at the same time, fans and fair-weather content creators alike. I truly cannot stand this level of negativity even if I have similar thoughts. There's nothing wrong with having negative thoughts, but negativity sells well so chase that bag I guess? I have some faith that Bungie can pull their collective heads out of their asses, but I stand by that the upper management needs to go. They do not care and it shows.
Same here. Nobody wants the game to die more than the people talking about it it seems. Try to keep your head up, there's still good folks around.
I always take month long breaks with Destiny and I find that really really helps. I know for someone like Datto, that might not be possible because of what his community wants. But it’s healthy and every time I come back, even if nothing is happening, I just enjoy the game waaaaay more.
That's how I've been playing since Destiny 1. The game doesn't have the depth to keep people engaged day-in, day-out for months on end. Unfortunately for content creators, that's kind of their product model, so they're forced to keep playing. Even worse, those same content creators end up having the loudest voices, so if they're not happy with the "lack of content", much of the community adopts the same opinion, even if they've never even played a third of the content available themselves.
I think that's how most people actually play. Older crowd with jobs or just busy life. Who I don't think really go in comment sections or chats. But it does seem the majority of the online community is very dramatic, whose opinions will change about the game depending on how the creator feels.
alot of people wish to be youtubers but man its the worst when you become famous covering one game and be stuck to that one game, we all have the privilege of stopping and playing other stuff whenever we want but some youtubers are just stuck playing the same thing and wont get any success doing other games

i was such a commited destiny fan playing every day with 6k hours in d1 and d2 together. since revenant released ive been getting a lot of crashes especially in the new dunegon like every 10mins. this was a kind of wakeup call for me. And now im thinking if im ever gonna come back to a game that just eats so much time and has so much fomo. i really loved the journey i had in destiny but i think for me its time to put it to rest. im still gonna play a bit casually when new stuff releases but wont be grinding anything or care about fomo. all my friends left the game anyways and alone it gets stale quickly.
The Destiny 2 launch and Curse of Osiris were received so poorly that if there wasn't an immediate turnaround, the franchise would've come to an end. You've got to wonder how close that is of reoccurring.

I just think ALOT of us had the time of our lives with Final Shape, had our moment, and jumped ship. I have roughly 7000+ hours in the franchise, and the game at one point was my second home. I haven't played even a second, not even logged on since August, but I hold no ill will or resentment towards this game or towards the devs - no one should hold ill will towards the devs, they want this game to be better than any of us. At this point now, I just appreciate what we had for those 10 years, the memories we made, and if another story comes up on the near horizon, you'll bet I will come check it out. This isn't quite apathy like many felt during Lightfall - for me, it's peace.
Love ya, Datto, you do such good work and I bet it doesn’t always feel appreciated, but it is. You are the way I keep up with Destiny when I take my long breaks, and I’ve been enjoying your Rogue gameplays a lot so just keep going man. Self-improvement is a life-long journey
The one thing that made me stop playing a lot: The "battlepass" time-gating at 100, 150, and 200 and none of the XP you earned in that time being retroactive and applying to the next act. That was a REALLY dumb decision imo.
It's like they're encouraging you not to play. It's weird.

I just kind of ignored it since the pass essentially auto completes if you do even 1/2 the seasonal challenges, plus you still get all the freebie engrams after level 100 so no XP is really getting wasted.

My friend convinced me, after months of assaulting my mind with subliminal messages, to try out D2 back in late 2018. It was the most fun i've ever had playing the game and the only game that I played the most. I loved doing challenges, going for exotic quests, collecting weapons and playing the activities. But, as the years went on and with how the game progressed, it became less of having fun and more of a 9-5 job. you log in, do meaningless quests, grind some gear, and get off. After the fiasco with lightfall, i just wanted the game to end already. I played TFS campaign, maybe did some prismatic stuff but i reached my breaking point and left this game for good... and it saddens me because this game was something truly special.
Tysm for the content that you've brought datto, i truly enjoyed your guides and i'll continue to stick around on youtube. To the guardians that are playing this game, I salute you. You might've been my raid m8 or we ran into each other in a pub or activity and i just wanna say, it was an honor playing with you all. o7

After playing 150ish hours of POE it reminded me how good it feels just roaming through the maps and at anytime a piece of gear can drop that could possibly take your build to the next level. I can't remember the last time I got that feeling playing destiny in years

Every time I need a guide, I specifically search YOUR channel for that guide. My Wife and I both. Your content is the best content. This video feels like it came from the HEART. Like it was an emotional one to post. Love ya dude. I have thousands of hours of destiny 2 and I never went a day without playing. But the last several months I've been so far behind and just don't have the urge to play this game anymore. I'm just now starting the tonics stuff and getting frustrated with it. but I'm trying. Because I loved this game since D1 alpha (I literally have videos of me wasting a whole nova bomb on an already dead player on this channel from the D1 alpha days) and I HATE that I switched to PC before the cross save and got SOOOOOOO far ahead and found out I'll never be able to wear that emblem from laser tag weekend that I took part in, and had a blast. My Wife and I both laughing our butts off as everybody melted in the crucible. My old playstation account has that damn emblem on, but I'd have to un cross save, and lose divinity and everything just to have an emblem. Anyways, I watch almost every youtube video and tune into your twitch stream when I can. I hope something good happens soon with this game. The most fun I've ever had in this game was 12 man raids, and the recent craziness... Auto rifles being machine guns and shotguns and melting everything so stinking fast.
Games should just kinda have a stopping point. At a certain point there just isn't blood left to squeeze from the stone and that's okay.

They didn’t “fix” the amount of currency dropping. They just changed it. One drop per run was working as intended.
They killed my motivation to play after crafting got removed from newer weapons and it's same with my friends . There are way better " fun " games to play on market than spend 100 hours grinding a god roll that may drop doing tedious tasks.

Thankfully, it's been regarded by the deeper community that Destiny 3 won't happen, which is a good thing.
We don't need that. We just need an honest full two-three months of just slow and methodical bug fixes and updates.
No need for new content that people will complain about anyways.
Personally, I pray the remaining and newer devs in Bungie eventually learn how to be like Digital Extremes and work with the community (the part that isn't full of vocal retards) to find that balance everyone loves about Destiny. Though, that might not happen, and it's only a matter of time before either the community unanimously leaves or Bungie gets shut down. Either one will happen - not "if", but "when".
It's hard when we can't get a straight answer from Bungie, but it's even harder when the most vocal part of the community is actively attacking Bungie for literally anything they do. It's hard to hope for the future when the future looks darker than before. We all want Destiny to live up as long as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14 or whatever else: We want the game to be fun again.
I can only hope those who are more honest and understanding can find peace between the madness. Everyone else, keep complaining. I'm sure you're "helping the community" being so aggressive.
I'll still be here in Heresy and Frontiers until the server shuts down, even if my clan dies. I can only help as many people who want to be helped in sherpas and vaultcleans.

Edit: I'm all up for just returning all the removed content, I can stand by that part of the community shouts. I never got to finish Red War or play the other content. I know hardware space and gigabites are limited on everyone's computers/consoles, but having *all* the content (or at least the most important parts) would mean something. The removal of content (even for the space) doesn't help anything other than make people upset that they missed content.
That's my only contribution to the fire. Otherwise, I'll keep quiet and wait to see where this all leads.

As a 10year destiny veteran, I can confidently say that Destiny has not earned another year from me, Bungie has not earned another year from me, and I couldn’t care less about Marathon.
Been here since day 1 of D1 and it honestly sucks that this feels like the end of everything. The grind just isn’t there for me anymore. Really hope they can bring the game back
Its good to feel this. This is how the marvel fans felt after endgame. The best stories been told, the big bads been beaten. Everything post endgame has been a downhill spiral of content. Same with this game.
The funny thing is that in both cases the biggest bad hasn’t been beat. They just wholeheartedly believe that no one’s gonna leave their projects at this point

The 'community' gets worse year after year. The Destiny Circlejerk subreddit was my method of staying sane, but I had to basically stop going to Destiny related subreddits. I don't think even Tom Christie's Skeletor really captures the breadth and depth of the hyperbole at this point.
I'm glad you mentioned the Joe Blackburn Reddit post, that one broke me for trying to hear the cringe destiny deserves to die posts that are top of DestinytheGame every day. If it means anything, thank you for being a positive creator in the space. There's only a couple people left i stay subscribed to on destiny, and you're the best of them all!
Datto, a lot of us have been following you for 10 years now. I can’t speak for everyone but i’m burnt out of Destiny too. You should be able to move forward with content YOU enjoy making, me & the others that are here for YOU will follow. It’s not 2014 anymore, Destiny has had its time in the sunlight.

My personal biggest issue is how WANK the story has been for episode one and two.
We were told the episodes would have wrapped up loose ends when, in reality, they’ve pretty much just made more. I wanted to see what they’d do with the lingering Vex and their story but instead we got an (almost) entirely new villain that has nothing to do with the greater Vex lore. What we got from episode two was less Scorn focused (with WAYYYYYY less Crow and Fikrul than it should have had) and more Eramis slop as if it wasn’t super clear the vast majority of people flat out do not care for the character at all.
They’ve yet to truly fuck up the Hive stuff so I’m still actually looking forward to Heresy but I really hope they don’t try to do something subversive there and instead just give us good spooky space magic stuff. It’s what I’ve still got faith in for this game.

Shadowshot is STILL disabled in Vesper's Host. That dungeon came out October 11. That's 3 months of one of the class defining supers being completely unavailable in a piece of paid content. Absolutely ridiculous
You're always going to find complainers, thats just a human interaction thing, but Bungie doesn't make it easy to latch onto the 2 things they do relatively okay when you have to sit next to the giant pile of maneur that is the rest of the repetitive game that majority o your community doesn't want/like to play.

I hopped back into the Division 2 recently, turns out it's still been getting updates and content drops. The loot grind there is great and each build/armor set definitely feels unique and well developed. It made me realize that Destiny 2 loot just lacks depth. Our weapons have the type/frame and then really just 2 perks that dictate gameplay. The armor literally doesn't matter once you get a good enough roll for 95% of your builds so there's just no reason to get loot anymore. Really hoping the Frontier's update brings back the feel of loot being unique and fun to chase. Thanks for all your vids Datto, you're a great voice in this community!
Div 2 is also getting another story expansion soon finally, Can’t wait tbh. Assume it’ll lead into more depending on how well received or it’ll lead on and set the story for div 3

I think the community needs a colletive break from Destiny 2. I did not play a lot of Destiny, outside of Vesper's Host for a few months, but when I got back into the game, I was like: "Why did I stop playing? This is so much fun."

The problem with content creation as a career is that it relies on the popularity of the content. I see your burnout, I see how low your mental state is.
And I'll be blunt. YOU are the only one that can change that. You cannot tie yourself to one ship, especially if it is at risk of sinking.
Variety will help you create a safety net for yourself AND avoid burnout. The human mind craves change, after all.
Stop being affected by the thoughts of the community. Any sports therapist will tell you that negative conversations are ALWAYS louder than positive ones. You need to be able to ignore opinions, even if they're valid. And you need to find a way to decompress.
It's hard being the face, mind and mouth of your own career. You are intelligent enough to know what's best for it. I hope you have a fantastic 2025.

This may be an unwanted comment that goes missed amongst 2000 other comments but I feel compelled to throw it out there into the void. I think your youtube content is excellent a lot of the time. I think the fact that you even use a script is a big deal. It's the difference between budgeting your time and making an outline for your essay and writing it the night before powered by hopes and dreams. You might be really good at long form video essay style content and maybe you' would enjoy it? I have no idea, just a thought that came to me while watching the video and procrastinating my own essay writing....
Datto - I say this with love, and as someone who played the game since Alpha D1. Destiny is over dude. It ended with The Final Shape. The episodes structure is an extended epilogue. I know Destiny's done so much for you over the years, more than anyone could comprehend, but the game is kaput. Don't force yourself to play it man. We love *you*, not Destiny. We'll follow you wherever you go.
I think an easy but massive "W" that Bungie could do is just make transmog free and simple. Get a piece of armor, it's instantly available to equip as an ornament. No bounties, no class-specific currency. Just free transmog, because no matter what kind of player you are, everyone loves fashion.
The fact they looked at FF14 mog system and went " We can make it even worse" is baffling.
