  • @ellespoonies
    @ellespoonies 3 роки тому +33

    Something that would solve quite a bit of your frustrations with this medium is simply using the cap as a mixing palette!
    You mentioned that with watercolors you have more control of your pigment strength, but you didn’t seem to realize why that is. A major factor is that with watercolor you usually use a mixing surface to dilute your colors, you would almost never work directly from the pan or tube,. Despite the similarities between the two mediums you weren’t using a mixing palette with the liquid graphite at all, which means you were always going to pick up the graphite at full strength because you had no way to dilute the pigment into the water held in the brush.

    There are Graphite pencils by Faber Castel that are water-soluble. I use those for that kind of artwork. Otherwise, I would suggest you use a ceramic water color palette (those pretty flower ones) to control the dilution better. I use those for ink wash aswell

    • @Phenrex
      @Phenrex 3 роки тому +7

      Yeah, all I could think of while watching him experiment and discuss his short comings with the medium was how much it reminded me of ink washes, because they too need an insane amount of dilution or otherwise lay really dark, etc.

    • @ninafairyart

      Those pencils are great! I love using them with the Derwent Graphitint paints. You're right that a wee palette would help 👍

    • @TiiaAurora

      @@Phenrex I actually use them the same way I would use ink wash. Or when I have a graphite drawing where I want to have a more solid darker area. The good thing about them that once water-activated they don't smear and are secure on the paper (can't erase them either)

    Edit: That can help with the predictably of where the pigment is going ;)

    Why didn’t you make a pallet for the liquid graphite? In watercolour you often mix a colour on a palette to make sure you have a consistent colour for something

      Yes I was thinking that whilst he was trying to explain about not getting good consistency. It would just help to mix. But I like the really dark lines which look almost charcoal like.

    I got some tubes of 'Derivan Liquid Pencil' (which where colour tinted) in a subscription box and I found it a very odd medium. Mixing it with watercolours was interesting, though and they gave some interesting effects when added to browns and greens.
    As far as dilution goes, I just treat it like watercolour and put it in my palette.

    I think if you had a separate little cup or a little plastic plate you could've gotten more more shading with the graphite liquid Because you could've added a puddle of the graphite with little water and added a little more water at a time instead of dipping it in the water and taking most of the graphite out and got more shade variance
