  • In today's video we have a 2005 Ford Econoline E250 work van with a 4.6l V8 engine. The customers complaint is that the rear brake lights or tail lights stay on. The customer already tried replacing the brake light switch but it did not fix the problem. In this video I will take you step by step through the troubleshooting and diagnostic procedure until we find the source of the problem.
    Thank you for watching!

ONE of the TOP 5 auto electric videos I have watched so far on UA-cam !! (I love automotive electricity!!---I have watched HUNDREDS). You are easy to understand and follow. Your troubleshooting is outstanding. It was like watching a mystery.
I can't wait for the conclusion!
Thank you for your time and knowledge.

I just "discovered" this channel and I am watching new and old videos. I like many things about his tutorials videos and one I am very impressed with the fact he works in all kind of vehicles. Second thing I like is the the thorough troubleshooting and his schematic study, signal tracing and overall smart troubleshooting. I'm learning a lot! Thank you for sharing.

My name is John, I would like to thank you for making such an informational video of your repair to rear lights not going off. This was a big help. Rain messed up my electrical 6 getting to the source was very helpful. I have the EXACT same problem as this video. I did all the same things and replaced all the possible parts, but my wife saw this video, and it was extremely helpful.. Thank you so much. Now we KNOW we have to replace the harness.

Eric, excellent video and great troubleshooting. Like how walked us through the system by following the schematic. Really enjoyed it because the technique of finding the short can be utilized on any vehicle. Please keep us posted on what you discover to be the cause of the overheating of the wires Artie ❤️

You're 100% right the past in that circuit is just to signal someone with the high beams usually somebody in front of you that's something is wrong like trying to get their attention of the circuit your analyzation of the circuit was tremendous your electronics is unbelievable well most mechanics don't realize anything about electronics keep up the good work

This just might be your best one yet---great diagnostic work! You're right, that wiring harness didn't turn into a melted gooey mess on it's own---something caused it, and it will be interesting to see what it is in part II

The Trailer Brake circuit. These Fords have two of them..One for the trailer lights. One for the Trailer Brakes. The relay box is under the hood. Next to the Coolant recover tank. Also one of those is a constant feed to charge the Trailer Battery of the two extra batteries under the passenger side doors....

that was a couple hundred dollar mistake ouch. but we all do it at one point or another. its a crap shoot as to whether to start at the power end or go to the light end and work backwards. in this case it wouldnt have made any difference, but sometimes it does.

Good one. Fixing that with good solid connections is not going to be fun. And as you say the original problem may still be out there. Many hours can be invested with no firm conclusions on electrical gremlins.

Great troubleshooting. I've got one. Maybe you can help. 2000 f350, if I turn the lights on when I turn them off the tail lights and clearance lights stay on. If I disconnect the batteries it resets and when I reconnect the batteries the lights stay off until turned on again by the switch. All other lights work as intended. I removed every fuse ,1 at a time, while the tail lights were on. The lights remained on no matter which fuse was removed.

I had a similar problem after I had some work done to my car at a shop. The work had nothing to do with the lights or electical. But when I received the car back, the parking lights were on all around. I did a lot of troubleshooting and had some back and forth arguments with the shop which basically denied liability. Turns out that there is a little switch on the back of the top of the steering Column that simply lights all those lights regardless of anything else. I'm not sure the purpose. But when the mechanic was moving the car, he somehow flipped that switch on, and the fix was to switch it back off. I believe the car was a Subaru Legacy wagon. So now whenever I have a lighting problem,, control switches are my first stop, and not necessarily looking for problems, but weird settings. or buttons. Databyter
