Fun fact: The actress who quit after killing the other recruit married him in real life. Basically, she blew his brains out and he said "That's my girl!". They are still together.

To help the cast feel more at ease during the co-ed shower scene, Paul Verhoeven cleared the entire crew off the set except for himself and the cinematographer, who both stripped naked while filming.
Next I vote for "The Matrix" which came out in 1999. edit add: Total Recall and Starship Troopers were both based on sci-fi books but The Matrix has an excellent original script.
Heinlein who wrote starship troopers the book was a science fiction author who served in the U.S. Navy in WW2. When watching the troops fighting the bugs, substitute Japanese Kamikaze charging army troops pouring at the U.S. Marines on IWo Jima like army ants and you have what Heinlien had experienced!
Carolyn: "Actually, I was expecting a bigger explosion." Also, Carolyn: "That's awfully small." Why do I get the sense that she has been equally blunt at other times in life? 🤣

Great reaction! Paul Verhoeven also did Robocop, which this movie carries over a lot of the concepts including those fun "commercials" from. Worth checking out if you had fun with this. That will complete your PV trilogy. :)
Part of the reason they cast 20 year olds to play teens is child labor laws. With teens, you can only film for a certain number of hours a day and you need teachers on set. That can disrupt production which costs money.
Generally true, but not here. Here, the director intentionally cast older people to parody things like 90210 and Melrose Place, popular TV shows at the time. The beginning is a young-adult drama and the end is a war movie. It also makes it funnier when they get reinforcements later, who actually are younger. Only the primary script had to be satire. Pretty much everything else, from casting to the inserts and even the special effects, were allowed to go into parody. I think that's what gives this movie its charm.
His brain shake bought all the bugs to the yard 🤣🤣🤣. Seeing the brains get sucked out was a bit of an eye opening scene. I did like your thoughts on Dizzy chasing after Rico romantically. I enjoyed your reactions. I liked the show references thrown in i.e. Doogie and Psych (as I know those shows). 🙂.

The problem (amongst many) with a mobile infantry war is that the number of ground soldiers is like thousands to one. So that swarm you see is equal to 5 to 6 human soldiers. You just cant win with those odds. Especially when the bug soldier is so ridiculously hard to kill. The bugs holes go down for miles, so no surface nuke is going to do a lot of real damage to the hive. It would have been better to just deploy either manned or unmanned satellites with so that if there is any crazy activity they will just drop a nuke to scare them back down.
Pretty good movie..I had to watch it twice to catch all the double and double-double crosses. And the suprise reveal of the mastermind behind it all..brilliant.
This movie was wild to see in 97. Still holds up. It's essentially satire about militarism and totalitarianism. Why some of the uniforms are based on nazuli like. Young people sent to die far away. Military recruiting in schools. Kids handling guns. Can only be a citizen with service, etc. Stuff like that is all through the film.
Yes, the point of revealing grades to the whole school was to humiliate the student and get them to work harder. I believe Sparta was similar, only men who served were citizens of the state.
I just came across your channel. I enjoyed the reaction. There are actually 4 Starship Tropper movies. The majority of the fan base will agree that the first one is the best. Denise Richards was 26 and Casper Van Dien (Rico) was 29 when this was released in theaters. Given the nature of this film I wouldn't be surprised if they cast people old enough for graduate school as "high school students" on purpose. Of course before this 90210 etc. cast mid 20-somethings and older as "high school students", lol, so there was precedent.
So true! I think we saw the actors and just weren’t sure if they were supposed to be college or not. Sometimes I can really take you out of the moment if you’re not sure!
@@totallywhatever Kind of crazy that Casper Van Dien and Patrick Muldoon (the dark haired player you commented on) are the same age - he looks much older, but I'm guessing maybe he was a heavy drinker.
"starship troopers 2" ain't so hot. it veers from the book. but "starship troopers 3: marauder" (2008) is really pretty good. it continues ricco's story and, for the most part, returns to the book. thanks for the video you silly ladies.
@@cjmacq-vg8um I cant get into the sequels at all because the production quality is so terrible compared to the first. When I see Rico in the third I feel just sad because this franchise deserved better movies and higher budgets after the first banger
The coolest part I saw this movie in theaters when it came out years ago when I was young it was freaking cool to watch on a big theater with all the bugs and stuff that brain bug was in crazy idea the director is the director of Robocop he's the one that directed this movie starship troopers❤
You guys do a great job with the reaction, the only issue with the reaction is number of commercials, like every 5 min. I will check out a few more to see if it the 5 min timing continues.
be aware starship troopers 2 and 3 have MUCH smaller budgets. 2 even only has like 1 special effect shot of the main warrior bugs that gets used repeatedly
"That was super awkward"...no, I'm pretty sure that was just Denise Richard's acting. At the time she certainly wasn't hired for her extensive theater work, lol.
The book is a complete 180 from the movie. Im not saying its a little bit different, I'm saying its completely different. Saying that, i love the movie on so many levels. The violence, the classic lines spoken, the characters. When I went out to bars with friends 20 some years ago and saw one of our friends getting wastey faced or shitty with other patrons, we'd say "Rico, you know what to do", and get his ass, or my ass, outta there.
here some good movies to get alot views SIN CITY 2005 FIGHT CLUB 1999 ( don't let the title fool you, the movie is not about fighting, it will blow your mind ) WATCHMEN 2009 DEMOLITION MAN 1993 ( again the title is misleading, its a cool movie and it has a funny take about the future, there is nothing about demolitions )
I loved this director Paul Verhoeven, who also made other good movies like Robocop, Total Recall, The Hollow Man, Basic Instint, a very irreverent director, politically incorrect, sarcastic, ironic, lover of graphic, explicit and sadistic violence. Too bad his time in Hollywood was brief, a little more than 10 years, I don't know what happened to him after that.
12:06 Is that so? For me, it's the opposite! I dont remember faces, but I never forget a name! It's a bit embarrassing to never remember what my friends look like 😆 Btw; Amy Smart played the role of Kayleigh Miller in *The Butterfly Effect* among other films. The captain is played by Brenda Strong, probably best known as Sue Ellen Mishky, the bra-lady in Seinfeld.
You can skip part 2 and 3 as they were awful. Plots were bad, CGI was bad, acting was even worse, and part 3 only brought back Rico. I would however recommend the two CGI movies that followed, Starship Troopers: Invasion and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars. For another movie where Dizzy gets with another Johnny, I'd recommend Johnny Mnemonic.
Part 2 is especially bad. Filmed entirely in a dark room with a black cloth to look like a night sky, rifles with lightbulbs on the end to make it look like they are shooting... It looks like a school stage production.
@@totallywhatever Part 3 had the best propaganda song that fits well to the first movie. I recommend just watching the song video ("a good day to die").

Thanks so much for watching!
This one veers from the book
@@erathsmedor1 ... i imagine it does but not as much as part 2 does. part one and three are at least connected through returning characters.
Would love to see it on the big screen.
@@totallywhatever it fun silly movie 4 theater 😂
You guys do a great job with the reaction, the only issue with the reaction is number of commercials, like every 5 min. I will check out a few more to see if it the 5 min timing continues.
Thanks so much! We’ll look into the commercial situation and see what our options are!
The one who plays diz is Dina Meyer and had recurring role on Beverly Hills 90210
Really? Maybe that’s why she looks familiar.
be aware starship troopers 2 and 3 have MUCH smaller budgets. 2 even only has like 1 special effect shot of the main warrior bugs that gets used repeatedly
thanks for the heads up
"That was super awkward"...no, I'm pretty sure that was just Denise Richard's acting. At the time she certainly wasn't hired for her extensive theater work, lol.
Don't need to bother with the sequels, just keep doing your part.
Got it! Thanks for watching!!
Yeah, movies based on books are always so different, right? We may have to check out the book!
Y'all just constantly appalled at the bugs. 🕷😆
They are very big! 😆
here some good movies to get alot views
SIN CITY 2005
FIGHT CLUB 1999 ( don't let the title fool you, the movie is not about fighting, it will blow your mind )
WATCHMEN 2009
DEMOLITION MAN 1993 ( again the title is misleading, its a cool movie and it has a funny take about the future, there is nothing about demolitions )
Thanks! We will add these to our list.
Good reaction ladies. I'm a new Subscriber. I'm sure it's just me but the sister on the right looks like Heather Morris from Glee!😄
Thanks for subscribing and you’re right, I think my sister looks like her too!
High school seniors 😂😂
Wow. Again. "Stop rooting for the bugs". lol
We really enjoyed Total Recall along with this movie, we’ll have to check out some more of his films.
This is a satire. Humans are actually the bad guys. Driven home by Doogie's SS uniform.
I knew we were rooting for the bugs for a reason!
Nah...
@@_TheJp_ K pumpkin. 'Cause you understand complex concepts.
you people are insane
@@totallywhatever You were rooting for a species that killed 6 million innocent people, interesting.
12:06 Is that so? For me, it's the opposite! I dont remember faces, but I never forget a name! It's a bit embarrassing to never remember what my friends look like 😆
Btw; Amy Smart played the role of Kayleigh Miller in *The Butterfly Effect* among other films.
The captain is played by Brenda Strong, probably best known as Sue Ellen Mishky, the bra-lady in Seinfeld.
Names are so hard for us - its definitely more difficult not recognizing someone’s face.
They say the third movie is good enough. I never made it through though. Just avoid the second one for your own good.
Thanks for the advice.
You don't like the word "arachnid?" Does that mean I can't convince you to watch Arachnophobia (1990)?
Hmmmm…. I will add it to our list, but I can’t make any promises. 😂
Fun fact: Chrissy from Stanger Things S4 is the daughter of the Casper Van Dein, Johnny Ricco, in this movie.
What? I had no clue, thats awesome! I love her character!
@@totallywhatever Grace Van Dien
That’s Paul Verhoeven’s joke!!! All the stars are older than the roles they play. They’re in high school.
Thanks! It was a little jarring at first to think they were in high school!
I really advise against watching the second one. The third one is quite good though.
at the start they're supposed to be graduating high school
We got that completely wrong.
Oh, that’s disappointing, we will add Johnny Mnemonic to our list.
Just for fun, scifi...id watch if you love Scify....!
I did like that part 4 has the opening lines from the book, word for word.
Technically, the entire point about a bayonet is that point
