I saw this in the theater back in 1997, loved it, better than I thought it would be. This movie takes the haunted house theme and takes it to a much further extent. The sets in this film were stellar. The scene where Justin goes out into space was very intense. This raises a big question: how long could someone survive in space before dying for good? What happens to your body when you're out in space without a suit? The answer is you would have about 15 seconds of consciousness before you pass out and you'll live about another two minutes before you die of asphyxiation. Now... this is important: you must exhale ALL of the air out of your lungs if you're about to get blown out into space. Do NOT try to hold your breath. In space, this would be the kiss of death. In the movie, Laurence Fishburn tells Justin just as the outer door is about to open to blow all of the air out of his lungs, shut his eyes as tight as he can and curl himself in a ball. This is correct. This is what you would do if you're in that kind of situation. As it was, Justin panicked and didn't shut his eyes, didn't curl up into a ball, and didn't blow all of the air out of his lungs before the outer door opened up. This left enough air in his lungs and body to cause his capillaries and veins to swell and some blood vessels in his mouth to burst. Unfortunately, this caused him to be taken back inside in a much messier condition than he otherwise might have. Justin most likely had a severe case of the bends from the air escaping from his body which greatly added to his critical state. If Justin had done as his captain instructed him to do, he probably would've had some capillaries on parts of his skin burst, but that would've been it. He was out in space for well under a minute so the medical team would've been able to have revived him, and he would've sustained far fewer injuries. Note also that his body was not frozen even though it was probably at least 350 below zero F outside. When you're in space, the cold is not going to affect you in only a minute or two. You'll be dead long before you have to be concerned about parts of your body freezing. This is another thing the movie got right.
The reason Dr Weir ( sam neil ) cuts up DJ ( Isaacs / Malfoy ) the way he does is that DJ has an extreme fear of surgery without anesthesia. Some additional character back story, several small sequences from the initial search (finding a floating tooth attached to its root). The "Visions From Hell" sequences match up almost identically to what is shot. What was cut down was the length of individual shots and a few vignettes, totaling about three minutes. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and it was a trip. There's actually another 30 or so minutes that were removed from the theatrical release to make the movie shorter, and the extra scenes would give it an NC-17 rating. Sadly, the extra footage has decayed in storage, so we'll never get an extended cut. This movie also has one of the best and smartest lines of any horror/thriller when shit's hitting the fan - "We're leaving!" For some more 90's movies, here's few suggestions to put on your radar: The Peacemaker (1997) - Starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman. Action/suspense. Johnny Mnemonic (1995) - Starring Keanu Reeves, Dina Meyer, Ice-T, and Dolph Lundgren. Action sci-fi. Devil's Advocate (1997) - Starring Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, and Al Pacino. Drama/thriller..? Boondock Saints (1999) - Starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, and Willem Dafoe. Action. Has part two from 2009. Down Periscope (1996) - Starring Kelsey Grammer. Slapstick comedy. Wrongfully Accused (1998) - Starring Leslie Nielsen. Spoof comedy in true Leslie Nielsen style. Might have to watch a lot more movies from that era to catch the spoofs. Ronin (1998) - Starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, and Stellan Skarsgard. Action/suspense. The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Starring Sean Connery, SAM NEIL, and Alec Baldwin. Suspense/action/secret spy stuff.. a bit.

I think the idea was to come up with something scarier than Alien/Aliens. They went too far with the gore and mutilated bodies. By the end of the movie I was more amused than scared at the attempts to shock me. A wonderful cast though. I enjoyed your reactions very much. Thank you.

A bit of an underappreciated gem IMO. Too bad studio interference demanded removal of the more unsettling and gory scenes of what happened on the Event Horizon they shot.
I have always been of the opinion that this movie is about 2/3's masterpiece of horror and 1/3 goofy. The moment we see Cooper survived the explosion is when the film slumps down. When he jetpacks back to the ship, and survives the explosion unscathed is when the movie flies off the rails. Both that writing decision, and the, well, essentially unfinished editing of the final act, with the temporary sound mix and the goofy stock sound effects. (Some of those goofy Hannah Barbara "BONK" sound effects on the bridge, the stock punching sound effects from the showdown in the core... UGH.) Music is brilliant, set design is second to none (right up there with Alien), the cast do a great job for the most part... It's just a couple of those final act choices that keep it from being an absolute classic in my book. Still love it, though. "Cool graphics" at the beginning of the reaction you said that, and I had to smile. The Event Horizon was a practical model, and was massive. Some 30 feet long. It was inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral. From above (looking down at it) the ship is shaped like a cross. The bow (front) of the ship has a face on it. A single cyclopian eye (The bridge window), an indent of a mouth, and on either sides of the "head" are two shapes that vaguely resemble horns. This design motif is also mirrored in the gravity couch bay. When the crew is in there talking about "the dark inside me" you can see them sitting on curved sections of the floor/wall. These curve up, and when the shot is wide and flat... it resembles the curved horns of a demon, with the green liquid in the background being a single eye. Again, a cyclopian demon face. All that is to say, in spite of its flaws, It's effective horror movie, because while you're watching it, the ship is watching you. You can't leave. She won't let you.
As to the ending. Miller went with whatever was left of Weir to the other dimension. Theoretically a sequel is possible. The gravity core still works. It could reappear back in our dimension at any time.
The evil presented in this film I've always thought has such a serrated edge to it There's nothing cool about it, nothing stylish It's pure evil with all the savagery and cruelty imaginable
love this movie ... but i'm convinced it was influenced by. the video game Doom ... Doom came out in 1991 this movie in 1997 . in doom you are marine trapped in a facility on mars where scientist were working on teleportation tehcnology and instead of teleporting objects, they opened a portal to hell. in Event horizion ,a scientist worked on a way to punch through space time , and wound up opening a portal to hell instead.
@@totallywhatever maybe ... there's been two doom movies , one from netflix (more reccent) and then the one they did years ago that went box office. both suffered from terrible writing , lame acting and a slew of other issues. but then this movie doesn't feature giant cyber demons and possessed human zombies . i'd say it's certainly a better movie by uncountable miles, than either of those doom movies were . but i don't think Paul Anderson set out to copy doom or it's theme even honestly .i personally think this game's back story resembling doom , is coincidence. that said Paul Anderson Did do an actual game based movie afew years after this movie . Resident Evil (in 2002 i think) of which the first one was one of the best video game adaptions to screen ever...but then his writing and directing fell a little flat in the sequels Imo. they sort of just turned into a means for him to showcase his hot wife (Milia Jonovich) in a lead action role.

Honestly, a lot of Anderson's worse habits are still on display here. The third act of just about every movie he makes falls apart. From about the moment we realize Cooper is still alive and coming back via jetpack (Which both looks goofy and is a nonsensical proposition at the distances we're talking), the sound mixing also starts to get really goofy. This was due to the rushed editing period that Paul had... But... If you look at all of his movies after Event Horizon, without fail, the third act is always the weakest point.
This movie is great. It would have been INTENSELY great if they had put all the gore back into it. This is heavily censored. Also could have done without the token black guy and his comedic lines. It felt way out of place with the rest of the movie

I guess not. 😮
@33:30 Now more learned how that space captain was cast to play Morpheus :p
14:29 - The term was coined in the 60's by SF writer Larry Niven. Meant for people who froze themselves for the future
Wow, we didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing.
This movie also has one of the best and smartest lines of any horror/thriller when shit's hitting the fan - "We're leaving!"
For some more 90's movies, here's few suggestions to put on your radar:
The Peacemaker (1997) - Starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman. Action/suspense.
Johnny Mnemonic (1995) - Starring Keanu Reeves, Dina Meyer, Ice-T, and Dolph Lundgren. Action sci-fi.
Devil's Advocate (1997) - Starring Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, and Al Pacino. Drama/thriller..?
Boondock Saints (1999) - Starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, and Willem Dafoe. Action. Has part two from 2009.
Down Periscope (1996) - Starring Kelsey Grammer. Slapstick comedy.
Wrongfully Accused (1998) - Starring Leslie Nielsen. Spoof comedy in true Leslie Nielsen style. Might have to watch a lot more movies from that era to catch the spoofs.
Ronin (1998) - Starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, and Stellan Skarsgard. Action/suspense.
The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Starring Sean Connery, SAM NEIL, and Alec Baldwin. Suspense/action/secret spy stuff.. a bit.
Wow, thanks for all of the extra info! And thank you for the movie suggestions. We will put them all on our list.
Great reaction video, I love the terrified reactions from you two!
These two are so fantastic! This is only the second one I've watched after The Thing and love these two already. It's so much fun seeing their reactions to movies so many years after first seeing them myself. Total Recall next. Alien and Seven would be good. Keep them coming. : - )
Thanks so much for watching and for the recommendations!
i have seen many horror movies during my teens and early 20ies, but that was the only one that made me having nightmares. i cant even tell why. And to be honest i wouldnt recommend anyone to watch it unless they are absolutely in for horror.
It was pretty crazy and left us thinking about what could be out there in the universe!
I've seen my fair share of horrible things in my life
Things that will haunt me to my dying day
I wish they made more movies like this, was genuinely creepy and disturbing.
Definitely, we’re loving the 90’s movies, they feel more creepy and build anticipation really well!
The Sadness comes awfully close
I think the idea was to come up with something scarier than Alien/Aliens. They went too far with the gore and mutilated bodies. By the end of the movie I was more amused than scared at the attempts to shock me. A wonderful cast though. I enjoyed your reactions very much. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching with us!
You'll never look at Sam Neal the same as before. 😄
Heck, you may not look at anything the same. 🤣
😢So true
@@totallywhatever you reacted to "In the Mouth of Madness" yet? that is another Sam Neill classic and the best HP Lovecraft movie yet not based on any HP Lovecraft work
Sorry we missed this - no we haven't gotten to that one yet.
A bit of an underappreciated gem IMO. Too bad studio interference demanded removal of the more unsettling and gory scenes of what happened on the Event Horizon they shot.
We hadn't really heard of this movie, but it turned out to be super interesting and scary at the same time!
IDK, pretty well known loved flic amongst horror and SyFy ppl
This was amazing, ladies! Poor girl on the left is scarred for life. By the end she couldn't believe what she just witnessed 😂. Keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it! She will need some time to recover 😂
OMG - choice one of the most insane horror films.
So insane - we had no idea!
UGH.)
Music is brilliant, set design is second to none (right up there with Alien), the cast do a great job for the most part...
The evil presented in this film I've always thought has such a serrated edge to it
There's nothing cool about it, nothing stylish
It's pure evil with all the savagery and cruelty imaginable
Totaly same character as Allen Grant :D
😂
its in the future and they have a ship nearly capable of FTL travel, I'm sure the ship will be fine if somebody smokes in it lmfaoo
Your right. I don’t know why we were so shocked.
This was delightful and fun...also the jump scares were great!!! Thank you and I hope you do more movie reactions.
Thanks for watching! We are working on more!!
You made it through The Thing. This movie is one of my favs too, legit scary.
love this movie ... but i'm convinced it was influenced by. the video game Doom ...
Do you think this movie is a better representation of Doom than the actual doom movie?
Thank you.
I came to your channel through your "Dusk 'til Dawn" reaction. I am not sure how firm you are about sticking to movies from the nineties. If there is a little leeway I would like to suggest the movie that introduced me to Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane, "Dead Calm" (1989).
Thanks for the suggestion we will add it to our list!
this is the movie i turn on when i cant find anything to watch while i fall to sleep. its sooo good!
To fall asleep? This would keep up all night!
I have a list for the same thing.
Event Horizon
Halloween
Tremors
Alien
Nightmare on Elm St.
Flatliners

You have to turn on your gellar field when you travel through the warp. Everyone knows that
Definitely reminds me of that game dead space
Whats better, event horizon or dead space?
Dead space games is awesome. They even had their own cartoon movie. That's a pretty cool where it all started about this. Alien rock that had curse powers. That makes you hallucinate and become alien like demons, zombie creatures. But the movie event horizon was cooler.
Dead Space took some inspiration from Event Horizon
Don't forget the Omen 3.
Awesome reactions from Totally Whatever, to one of the greatest sci-fi horror movies ever made.
I loved that you recognized several of the cast, from other great movies.
Sean Pertwee who plays Smith the pilot, is a superb British actor and son of legendary British actor and entertainer Jon Pertwee, who famously portrayed the Third Doctor Who.
For another fantastic performance from Sean Pertwee, please check out the horror movie Dog Soldiers.
Thanks! I didn’t realize he is the son of the third Doctor Who. We will take a look at Dog Soldiers - is it a 90s film?
It's actually from 2002, but Dog Soldiers is still amazing. :)
@@kieronball8962 We will have to check to out. Thanks for the recommendation!
I'm always gonna lament the permanently lost footage making the Director's Cut impossible. (Pro tip - don't store film _in a goddamn salt mine_ .) However, watching you guys' reacting, I can see why Paramount were conscious of the upper most limit of violent imagery that general audiences were prepared to tolerate. I'd still love to have seen the full uncut captain's log sequence restored to its full demonic glory though.
Yeah, we did hear about the lost footage. Maybe we’d watch a video of you reacting to that and not watch it ourselves! 😆
I saw this at the cinema when it first came out, one of my absolute favourite sci-fi horror fims.
Have you guys seen the movie Under the Skin?
No, is it scary?!
@@totallywhatever Yeah, I loved it. Let's say it's different. One of the best horrors I have seen (of recent years).
Actually there are discs and tapes out there that can hold a lot, a lot of information, can hold Petabytes of data, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB. You want to talk about holding data, they can hold more than modern hard drives. Though they are expensive and hold limitations. The PB disk one is still experimental.
Wow 😮
John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is another good horror starring Sam Neil.
Yes, we’ve heard that is a good one! Thanks for the rec, we’ll add it to our list.
Hey ladies, shout out from the US Marines! Great reaction, plz keep them up! U guys are awesome! ❤🤍💙💛
Thank you so much! We will definitely keep the reactions coming!! Thanks for watching and thanks for your service!
OMG, I absolutely adore you two! I watch a lot of video/movie reactions as I am a movie buff, and it is SO NICE to see two normal people react to some great movies! You're real people, and please forgive me as I don't know if you're sisters, friends, in-laws or what your relationship is, but I get the feeling you've known each other forever. I also like that you grew up in the 90s so you're not fans of all the woke crap currently going on. I very much look forward to your reactions (and PS. - you're both lovely BTW! 😘😘😘)
Thanks so much for watching, we have more coming soon!
@@totallywhatever Awesome, I can't wait! :) Am about to watch your reaction to Total Recall (I want to see how you react to people's eyes popping out when they're gasping for air on Mars! --- my wife thinks that is totally crazy when that happens 😁😁
nice i love this movie. keep them coming, i can see the potential of this channel.
Thanks so much, we have more videos coming!
If you want to try another late-90s horror, that's not quite as gruesome, then Phantoms (1998), starring Ben Affleck, Liev Schreiber, & Peter O'Toole, or Deep Rising (again 1998), starring Treat Williams & Famke Janssen, are worth a watch.
@@pedanticperson1149 Adding those to the list! Thanks for the suggestions.
25:15 Finally, somebody's got the right idea!
Yes, finally! 😂
Its a shame we cant get the original cut. Apparently its a lot wierder.
Even weirder? 😳
Apparently the director came over from another set with the 1000 mile stare saying you want believe it, they had midgets, amputees, porn stars, that was for some of the he'll scenes. There was more horror on the ship to. Apparently the film was destroyed, buts that's another story.
Wow!
@@totallywhatever well it was inspired by warhammer 40k warp travel...so the movie is like the kindergarten version
Imagine what kinds of horror he saw..
about the loud typing. stuff needs to work with the crew in space gear, including thick gloves and helmets.
I am a new subscriber and I hope to see a first time reaction to The Thing (1982) and Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) and The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2 Judgement Day (1991) and The Shining (1980) and The Exorcist (1973) and The Exorcist 3 (1990) and Tremors (1990) and Jaws (1975) and Alligator (1980) and Pumpkinhead (1988) and Child's Play (1988) and Halloween (1978) and A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) as well:).
Thank you for the amazing list, we’ll do our best!
Child's play is stupid, no Chucky, lame cringe
I hope y'all get to The Thing for Halloween season 👍
We have a poll going and it looks like The Thing might win.
Fun reaction , serious… Smoking Horizon ! lol
Thanks... that movie is crazy! lol
Want more Sam Niell in a movie less gory and scary but more generally disturbing and uncomfortable? Check out the English-language French film by a Polish director set in Germany, "Possession" (1981). Also stars Isabelle Adjani.
We love disturbing and uncomfortable, thanks so much for the recommendation!
How can you get from this to the resident evil franchise?
Honestly, a lot of Anderson's worse habits are still on display here. The third act of just about every movie he makes falls apart. From about the moment we realize Cooper is still alive and coming back via jetpack (Which both looks goofy and is a nonsensical proposition at the distances we're talking), the sound mixing also starts to get really goofy. This was due to the rushed editing period that Paul had... But... If you look at all of his movies after Event Horizon, without fail, the third act is always the weakest point.
This movie needs a remake.
We would watch it!
I read that a tv series is in the works
Considering the current state of movies, please no.
the reason, why you need gellar fields to travel the warp...
Such a great movie .... now he makes resident evil 😞
We really loved it! Thanks for watching!!
This movie is great. It would have been INTENSELY great if they had put all the gore back into it. This is heavily censored. Also could have done without the token black guy and his comedic lines. It felt way out of place with the rest of the movie
So. He didn't turn out to be much like Dr. Grant, did he?
Not at all 😭
Buy this girl some spikes lmao
Its a shame all the extra footage of the movie was lost. It was supposed to be far more graphic and gory.
Who is the older sibling?
( I have a guess)
What’s your guess?
@@totallywhatever
Carolyne?
(excuse the spelling if it's wrong)
Carolyn here - we are close in age, but Nanette is slightly older!
@@totallywhatever
WOW! I never would have guessed.
(....and literally, ....didn't)
I hope she doesn't take this the wrong way but Nanette totally gives "younger sibling" energy.
Also, what do you mean "slightly older"?
Unless we're talking fraternal twins, "slightly older" is mostly meaningless with siblings except if your age gap is as small as humanly possible vis-a-vis the human gestation period.
Like,......say,....10 months. (meaning, mom got pregnant barely a month after the older sibling was born. I've actually heard of cases like that.)
My older brother and I have a 20 month age difference and people used to joke around when we were kids (which I didn't understand then), that my parents had some 'splainin to do.
Hello, have you seen the movie Haywire with Gina Carano?
No, we haven’t - we will add it to our list!
Love this movie, loved this reaction. I saw this when it came out...I was JUST old enough to watch it at 17. I remember going in...coming out...and not entirely knowing what the hell I had just witnessed. There was nothing like this movie back then...and to this date...nothing really like it since. Such a great experience!
Thanks for watching! We didn’t know what to expect- definitely couldn’t have handled it at 17.
You have a lot of sound popping between cuts. Try and eliminate it. Also your audio is out of sync.
We would love to hire a professional editor once our channel grows. Do you offer editing services?
@@totallywhatever No, and this doesn't require professional anything. Search for "Grim Russian Robocop", where I used an entry level microphone and crappy Cyberlink Powerdirector editor to make a 30 minute movie review without popping noises or desync problems. In 2015. It's not a miracle, it's the default baseline for video editing. Many people edit their own videos, it's not hard to learn. You don't need fancy effects, just know how to capture quality audio and video and then cut it.
@@totallywhatever hmm I posted a comment here earlier, did you delete it? Seems petty if true.
@@shihonageI don't know what you said in your comment but on several occasions I've had comments disappear from various channels almost immediately even if they were saying the most innocuous things or even bring supportive of thst particular channel.
