one of my fav gags on TG is when they're traveling at walking speed in a boat and May throws a rope in the water, counts the knots and then says "we're doing 113 knots so about 130 MPH."
That window killed their thrust. The idea is to create low pressure in front of the craft and high pressure behind. The craft attempts to stabilize eh pressure, by pulling the craft forward. The intake has to be unobstructed, or to have a duct that brings the intake axis, in line with the direction you want to go. They could have made a split duct with intakes on both sides of the cab. Something like this: intake___ \ ____engine intake___ /
You can't expect a turbine engine to have any significant thrust when you place it 10cm away from a plexiglass board, almost completely restricting the airflow.. have the boat whatever shape you like..
Jet engines: Big, scary, noisy, dangerous, probably only useful on airplanes. I like how all three know it's probably not going to work but all wonder "but what if it does work?"
I think that's one of the great things about it. If it works, it'll be brilliant and we'll be happy, if it doesn't, they'll have a laugh and we'll still be happy. It's a win-win.
Turbine engines exist that are small, not as loud, are not dangerous. Scary is subjective. The OH-6 I flew 51 years ago had a 250SHP turbine you could pick up and carry. The scary part came from the low level flying and the odd bullet or RPG. Years before that Chrysler built a series of turbine powered cars and firetrucks. I saw the firetruck in action and it seemed to be about as loud as a diesel powered truck. I never had the chance to see the turbine powered railroad engines. But I would guess that hey were big and noisy. Oh and yeah turbines really aren't the best choice for a car. : )
@@fred1barb The only time turbines become a choice for a car is as an electric range extender and in a small form factor. They run at their peak efficiency all the time and turn a generator that keeps charging the battery as you drive, so that combined with regenerative braking you'll never have to pull in to a charger. They weigh around 90 kilograms with a 10k hour maintenance interval (this is the Hybrid Kinetic H600 turbine) and output around 60kW of power at 40% thermal efficiency, a number subject to rise as we learn how to optimize the design for maximal peak efficiency instead of weight or power output.

I just LOVE the shot of the jet engine maxed out and the wait for frame of camera. Then it slowly comes into frame lol I could have worded that better lol👍🐄🐮
I suspect that the reason for the slow speed is that the jet engine is pushing thrust downwards, which pivots the nose of the boat downwards. So the nose of the boat is being pressed into the water, creating lots of drag. Aim the jet engine upwards a bit, and that will lift the nose of the boat, and will probably result in good speed. Cheers!
That's true but the front surface of the car is always going to be subject from lots of resistance by the water, ideally trying to pivot the vehicle to some small degree. Of course what you say would certainly improve the outcome, but this situation is hard to remove entirely. Having a longer vehicle would also help, too, as well as mounting the engine as low as possible to lower both the center of gravity and the moment of the force
When I'm flying a turbo prop I love taking off parallel runways with jets. Jets accelerate so slowly since the jet engine is chocking below about 200 mph.
For everyone wondering why the car didn't move that fast: it's a jet engine that requires a lot air to flow through it (sucks in air from the front, and blasts it out from the back). The placement behind the glass was not a good idea as everything in front of it would be sucked in it, including James and Jeremy. They didn't operate it anywhere near full power, it consumes over 300 gallons a minute at full power and would suck everything in it.
That and they hydrodynamics were shite with those pontoons and using air to push against air to propel through a substance that's 80 times as dense as air just doesn't work.
Jeremy: Why doesn't it work? James: Well its mainly to do with... (Some say James went on pontificating all through the cold night. Others say he's still there.)

One of the major problems is the "cockpit" was directly in front of the jet. It cant pull in enough air with that obstruction in the way. The pontoons were also creating too much drag esp after being driven into the water. Also, water is much denser than air.
I love how they expected the engine to be powerful enough to push a high drag boat through water with the intake completely obstructed. The high speed airflow through the intake that happens in flight is really important for proper combustion and full power.
From someone who has operated a lot of jet engined vehicles, the middle point isn't necessarily the braking point. Accelerate-go/accelerate-stop distances are important in airplanes ;)

It provides a vertical accent to a plane that is heavier than that boat. Hammond was right they could even row with that speed. Surely that engine should give more power than two elderly people, lol.
it has a plate of plastic or glass blocking any air entering
Well yeah they didn't use an afterburner, that's what makes all the thrust, all they did was turn on the fan.
@@TheFPSPower it was all for show anyway just bullshit pretending.....no one would actually be that stupid to think it would have worked ..the car and pontoons would had so much drag in the water even a slow speed would have torn it apart
@@skezburah I'm wondering if they tow it with a rope? Or push it? You'll notice they edit/cut off quite often just before the front/rear is shown in some shots.
@@TechyBen yeh wouldn't surprise me ..its all just for a show and entertainment...those 2 dudes would have never have put themselves in a position where the helmet and neckbraces are necessary....but yeh its a tv show and its got a lot worse since then as in this show was nothing compared to the reality poison garbage we have now ...but yeh u can tell they brand whore hard and say certain makes are good for $$$.....
The drag of the pontoons, everything
The end of the jet engine was pointing down instead of being horizontal
Wouldn’t have made much difference. Water resistance is a lot stronger than air resistance obviously and if it was due to angle the back end would’ve lifted up
not to mention they put a pane in front of the intake
@@nice_sprite5285 it was pretty close to the engine but I’ve seen things like that stuck in front of the engine and it still works. Not the best thing for it but works.
2:40 to 2::48 what's the name of that soundtrack? First heard it in Series 1 when May did the Ford v Ferrari thing
*Sometimes my genius is… it’s almost frightening.*
That was such a joy to watch 🧡
