Even a single person leaning back against the rope would have it noticeably moving in less than two minutes, so this car could definitely move that ship in around 20 minutes. EarthKnight; "Overly Aggressive" is a very kind way of saying he brutally and needlessly abused that vehicle. I seem to have made a sub-career of using undersized equipment to do oversized jobs without destroying the equipment. Here is how you do this job: Launch the car and develop as much tension as you can in the tow rope without permanently deforming the body of the car and then brake hard to hold the car in position (trans in neutral, clutch engaged, engine idling) while the tension in the tow rope works on the inertia of the ship to get it moving. When the tension in the tow rope subsides to perhaps 25% of maximum slack off the rope and repeat step 1. Since the ship is now moving a bit the tension in the tow rope will subside more quickly. Rinse and repeat as necessary to get the ship where you want it. Smoking tires and burning clutches are NOT necessary! Be aware that the momentum built up in the ship will have to be dissipated somehow when you want it to stop moving. The car can only accelerate the ship, not decelerate it. The engine has the power to do this job, but the drive train is designed to apply that power to accelerate a 1 tonne mass, not a 13,000 tonne mass.
      Clarkson's job here was NOT to move the ship. His job was to make "good" television with lots of smoke and flames to appeal to an audience that likes to see (somebody else's) vehicle abused. He was certainly successful at this job!

    Strongmen challenges pulling a truck are also quite common. Its really all about overcoming inertia rather than moving the weight itself. The springy rope definitely was part of the reason the ship moved though. The energy was stored in the rope as the car moved forward and then when it sprang back it pulled the ship forward. So nobody talk about "3 short signals" at the end?🤓 It means, the ship is starting to move backwards with C3 attached to it 😁👻

  • @GrumpyGrebo

    The actual physics behind this are a lot less impressive than you would think (the ship wouldn't move an inch if the rope was not slack) but good clip still.

    • @GrumpyGrebo
      @GrumpyGrebo 3 роки тому +12

      @@nakedsnake6076 The car is just accelerating and moving a little distance, and putting its momentum into the rope. Unlike a standing start, momentum is multiplied by the weight of the car.

      Nothing about this comment or the "explanation" is scientific or accurate in any way. It's just bullshit!
      Ever seen strongmen pull a truck? They don't use elastic rope either. The effect of something floating on water is similar to something sitting on its wheels, where kinetic friction is low, and the greatest force to overcome is the static friction between the surfaces that are preventing the object's movement. Every material has a measurable friction coefficient, which tells us how much it will resist movement in relation to any other given material.
      In the case of a truck, the weight of it is transferred through the axle bearings to the wheels; with the boat, its hull simply sits on water - which has a very low friction coefficient.
      In reality, it doesn't matter at all whether if the rope is flexible or not. If there was no current in the water, even a regular person could move the boat bit by bit by tugging on the rope persistently!
      Don't trust everything you read on the internet, kids.

      @@bacaw2856 Somebody is angry. F = ma. Citroen C3 weighs 1020kg minimum, plus a driver let's say 1100kg. 0 to 60 in around 13.2s. So after 5 meters of slack the car has a force of 31800 lb ft/s. Which is significantly greater than 0.
      What you've said would be true, but there is an obvious difference between a human and a car when it comes to towing. Have a think for a little haha.
      I've edited in a tip even though his has been explained on many forums before: why do cars need traction control?

      What you said even now doesn't make any sense. Significantly greater than 0? Zero what? The car's maximum acceleration to 60mph has nothing to do with this equation!
      I sense a troll.

      @@gordoxium Wonderful car! the GT line is one of the best lines I have tried! Congrats for your acquisition! I rent mostly all the time and they give many cars to test because they know me. They have even lent me BMW for the price of a normal rent because 'I am a good customer' - I just accidentally know the manager 🤣 , and from my XP, the only one that can compete with the GT line, is the Lexus brand, but Peugeot is more quiet (engine) and more reactive when you have to overpass - give a peak of power. So, for what you pay, Peugeot gives you more quality and benefits! ✌️Besides, in the rental agency they prefer Peugeot because it is pretty reliable and they do not need to send them for maintenance as often as the other brands. They have recommended me to go for Peugeot the day I decide to buy a car! 🙈

    If he just accelerated until the rope stretched, the weight of the car would eventually set things in motion. I'm sure destroying the clutch and tyres was slightly more entertaining though.
