QueenRubyProductions white isn't a true color in most animals. It is either a fully greyed out animal or it has a large white pattern that covers the base coat color. Wolves dont have white patterns. A "white" wolf is just grey so kk For the simplicity of the game KK (double black) probably won't happen often. They say later in the game that it will be possible but it will probably be rare
As someone who did 2 years of university genetics, this makes me so excited! You think way more closely about genetics and genetic traits than any other game I’ve ever played and I’m so glad you’re putting so much work in to make as many aspects of the game as realistic as possible

The pups at the end look super adorable!! I had a lesson in Biology about genetics so this was really easy to understand. I really love the idea of genetics! Adds a whole new set of realism to the game and makes you more wary of which mate you choose. Also bigger litter sizes! It'll be super cool to have a random litter instead of the regular set of four

Wow, this is incredible! I had hoped to see more of an advanced coat genetics system for the WQ3 update, but I had no idea it was going to be this advanced. Interestingly enough, I just did a lot of my own research into canine genetics for a Minecraft mod I've been producing, and dang are they complex! I didn't know about the K locus being connected to disease resistance and/or possibly leading to pup deaths, though. It's fascinating to hear more about these genetics and to see them being implemented into WolfQuest in such a dynamic way! In case you happen to be interested, this is the site I used as my main reference for my mod. I'm sure it's nowhere near as in-depth as talking to an actual geneticist, but it provides a nice basic overview/quick reference in layman's terms that seems fairly comprehensive from what I've been able to research on my own, at least. www.doggenetics.co.uk/ It's centered on domestic dogs more than wolves, but there's definitely some commonality in genes there. Are you planning on having some kind of family tree function? I always thought it would be cool to make it so that the surviving pups of a litter would automatically be playable after you finish with their parents. Of course it might be slightly challenging having a computer imagine what they would look like as adults, but it would be a nice option instead of just recreating wolves every time. Also, if this family tree option was implemented, it would be really neat if you could choose to pass down perhaps a fraction of the previous wolf’s experience to the pup you choose to play as. That way you could start off with a couple hundred EXP points? Just an idea, not sure if it would really turn out well. I think the ranging litter size idea is brilliant, and definitely something many players have been looking forward to. May I add that the pups at the end are gorgeous and so adorable! Really well done with their modeling and design. I am so excited for this game! I can see the effort being put into it; and this effort is absolutely paying off! Well done WQ. Well done. :D

You teach me so much about biology, and life of wild animals, you taught me about survival of the fittest, how wolves, and other animals, tend to go for young and weak animals. How they tend to go for the animal that sticks out, such as a baby compared to adults. The hunting techniques and strategies, as a person who wants to be a zoologist when I'm older, I am learning so much from you in one video than school teaches me in two weeks. I remember I watched this video when it came out, I didn't really understand it entirely but it did make a bit of sense. Fast forward nearly 3 years, and I'm learning about genetics for my final year in school. As soon as I hear "punnet squares" I instantly remember this video, and it turns out that it really helped me to understand it properly for school, and I actually really liked genetics! this is so COOL! i absolutely love games with genetics, i could mess with them and learn about them forever. wolfquest 3 is gonna be an ultimate forever favorite game for me. it's so cool to see my childhood favorite game getting revamped and getting all these new components i even hoped for as a kid! me and my friends have started playing again in anticipation for the revamp/new episode. thanks so much for all the amazing work you put into this game, the passion for it and all the research you guys do to make, definitely in my opinion, the best wildlife simulator game ever makes me so emotional!! can't wait to play wolfquest 3 for hours and hours!!

Oo, I love genetics! I know most about horse color genetics but am starting to learn about dogs, learning about wolves was very interesting! I did not know that two Ks would be fatal in wolves. I'm so excited that WQ3 will have a proper genetic system, and larger litters. Keep up the good work!
Watching this had me think of something else that is a potential problem by coat color. If an animal has blue eyes and white fur the are likely deaf and occasionally blind as well, meaning that they are likely going to die since they don't have the change to get an audial or visual warning for approaching danger.
That wolf would not last long. In wolves, all pups are born with blue eyes that change as they age. The white color in Yellowstone is a variation of gray (not albinism) so would not have any accompanying issues on eyesight or hearing.

It’s kinda strange to think about, but female lions are attracted to males with darker manes. The darker manes are caused by a higher level in testosterone, which also makes them more aggressive. This is a win-win situation because it allows the male to be better at defending his territory and cubs. And it surprises me that wolves haven’t evolved to become attracted to wolves with darker pelts for a similar reason. Wolves with darker pelts have a higher disease tolerance. And no, I haven’t forgotten about the KK combination.
We checked with the experts and the International Wolf Center, and adults do generally pick up pups by the neck, though the can also pick them up at the lower back.
This just convinced me to buy Wolf Quest 3 once it comes out. I'm really into this genetics stuff and now that you're going to add it in the game, I'm even more excited! Good luck developing this masterpiece of a game!
I’m so excited! I love genetics 😱 Also, I’m wondering if you would be able to add a albinoism and a melanism trait that could occur very rarely in pups and/or your mate. Maybe you could get an achievement if you found a melanistic/albino wolf in the wild? I don’t know, it’s just an idea I had that I think would be awesome if you implemented!
The black wolves discussed here are melanism in action! Read all about it here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2903542/ Albinism is a mutation/disorder of genes that results in little or no production of the pigment melanin. While it is also an inherited condition, albino wolves have not been seen in Yellowstone so we aren't including them in the game. White wolves in Yellowstone are light gray wolves.
Coming back to comment on this- I LOVE how the inclusion of a more refined inheritance system, along with the new system of mates having personalities, will affect the mission for choosing a mate. I found that with the current version most people select a mate based on wanting 'pretty puppies' etc. It will definitely make finding a mate more of an actual mission (especially now that you'll actually have to search for and woo potential mates). These new systems bring a whole new realm of realness as well as a bit of strategy to the game. Just like real wolves, players will really want to consider if potential mates will be not only able to produce healthy pups but also care for them well. I imagine that this will become very important with the Tower Fall expansion as you will want the fittest of pups to ensure their survival and usefullness in assisting with hunts and such.
I came back to this awesome video since I have been currently learning about genetics and punnet squares and stuff in science, so I decided to check this out again! I understand it A LOT better than the last time I saw it over a year ago!

So the pups that don't make it will die "in utero" which a player (or wolf) won't know about. It will be included in the genetics that generates the litter behind the scenes.

I had so much fun in my biology class last year, especially at the interesting part about genetics (which included being taught about punnett squares), and even after watching this video many times, I still enjoy it's interesting explanation on wolf pup genetics! (Now im stuck taking chemistry and I absolutely hate it....)

Niche seems like a good game that uses basics of genetics. But it does not model genetics of any real-life animal species.

As someone who has a passion for both games and genetics my heart is soaring seeing how much effort and love is being poured into the most beautifully detailed game I've ever seen! I remember I watched this video when it came out, I didn't really understand it entirely but it did make a bit of sense.
Fast forward nearly 3 years, and I'm learning about genetics for my final year in school. As soon as I hear "punnet squares" I instantly remember this video, and it turns out that it really helped me to understand it properly for school, and I actually really liked genetics! Thanks again to WolfQuest for once again helping me out in life 😂

Wolf coat genetics is still my favorite fun fact to share even after over 6 years since watching this for the first time. This devblog actually got me really interested in genetics as a whole, actually.

wolfquest 3 is gonna be an ultimate forever favorite game for me. it's so cool to see my childhood favorite game getting revamped and getting all these new components i even hoped for as a kid! me and my friends have started playing again in anticipation for the revamp/new episode. thanks so much for all the amazing work you put into this game, the passion for it and all the research you guys do to make, definitely in my opinion, the best wildlife simulator game ever makes me so emotional!! can't wait to play wolfquest 3 for hours and hours!!

I also love the fact that you guys are adding different stats to the mates- really adds personality and can help us make better teams when hunting and raising pups! Oo, I love genetics! I know most about horse color genetics but am starting to learn about dogs, learning about wolves was very interesting! I did not know that two Ks would be fatal in wolves. I'm so excited that WQ3 will have a proper genetic system, and larger litters. Keep up the good work!

Watching this had me think of something else that is a potential problem by coat color. If an animal has blue eyes and white fur the are likely deaf and occasionally blind as well, meaning that they are likely going to die since they don't have the change to get an audial or visual warning for approaching danger.
That wolf would not last long. In wolves, all pups are born with blue eyes that change as they age. The white color in Yellowstone is a variation of gray (not albinism) so would not have any accompanying issues on eyesight or hearing.
i think you might have mistaked that with cats. that happens with white cats with blue eyes, usually.

It’s kinda strange to think about, but female lions are attracted to males with darker manes. The darker manes are caused by a higher level in testosterone, which also makes them more aggressive. This is a win-win situation because it allows the male to be better at defending his territory and cubs. And it surprises me that wolves haven’t evolved to become attracted to wolves with darker pelts for a similar reason. Wolves with darker pelts have a higher disease tolerance. And no, I haven’t forgotten about the KK combination.
It is interesting and scientists are still sorting out all the whys and hows.

Also, I’m wondering if you would be able to add a albinoism and a melanism trait that could occur very rarely in pups and/or your mate. Maybe you could get an achievement if you found a melanistic/albino wolf in the wild? I don’t know, it’s just an idea I had that I think would be awesome if you implemented!

Albinism is a mutation/disorder of genes that results in little or no production of the pigment melanin. While it is also an inherited condition, albino wolves have not been seen in Yellowstone so we aren't including them in the game. White wolves in Yellowstone are light gray wolves.

Coming back to comment on this- I LOVE how the inclusion of a more refined inheritance system, along with the new system of mates having personalities, will affect the mission for choosing a mate. I found that with the current version most people select a mate based on wanting 'pretty puppies' etc. It will definitely make finding a mate more of an actual mission (especially now that you'll actually have to search for and woo potential mates). These new systems bring a whole new realm of realness as well as a bit of strategy to the game. Just like real wolves, players will really want to consider if potential mates will be not only able to produce healthy pups but also care for them well. I imagine that this will become very important with the Tower Fall expansion as you will want the fittest of pups to ensure their survival and usefullness in assisting with hunts and such.

Two copies of K is lethal for some reason. We will see if we can find out more about that. We are curious too.

So the pups that don't make it will die "in utero" which a player (or wolf) won't know about. It will be included in the genetics that generates the litter behind the scenes.

I had so much fun in my biology class last year, especially at the interesting part about genetics (which included being taught about punnett squares), and even after watching this video many times, I still enjoy it's interesting explanation on wolf pup genetics!
