- New courtship gameplay for WolfQuest 3
Not long after wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, researchers witnessed - for the first time ever - a lone dispersal wolf joining a pack to become a breeder and pack leader. This encounter lasted many hours and involved a great deal of howling, tail wagging, playbowing, and other social interactions before the lone wolf was accepted into the pack. While that encounter involved a dispersal joining an existing pack, it provides a good guide to how dispersal wolves likely meet and interact when deciding whether to form a pack. So we drew on this knowledge when crafting the “social arena” in WolfQuest back in 2007, which we designed as a stylized turn-based encounter that emphasizes the communicative aspects of certain social behaviors.
We’re drawing again on that seminal 2002 paper about the Yellowstone wolves, but as with every aspect of WolfQuest 3: Anniversary Edition, we’re going bigger with the new social arena. We wanted to make this new courtship gameplay more naturalistic, giving every wolf freedom of movement to create a more dynamic situation. We also wanted to let each wolf’s personality shine through. But the biggest fundamental decision was to discard the quiz-structure of the old social arena. Instead of requiring a correct sequence of emotes, many different emotes (from a subset appropriate for courtship) can boost a potential mate’s level of interest. But then what’s the gameplay? Aha - it’s not IF you can persuade another wolf to be your mate, it’s if you can successfully persuade the wolf you WANT to be your mate.
So instead of the old stylized 2D turn-based encounter, courtship in WQ3 will involve the free-roaming player and one - or more - other wolves who might become your mate. Yes, our science advisors tell us that it’s common for dispersal wolves to roam with siblings, so you’re just as likely to meet a pair of wolves, or perhaps even three - each of whom might be interested in finding a mate for themselves. (Not all wolves you encounter will be so friendly, of course, but we’ll talk about that in another blog post.) Some of these wolves will respond more readily to your courting. So as you interact with them, you can get a sense of their personality from their actions, to help you decide which (if any) you’d like to have as a mate. Furthermore, you should also evaluate their genetic diversity to avoid picking a mate that is too closely related to you or would make a bad genetic combination with you (see our Genetics video: • Genes Behind the Scenes ).
Once you do persuade another wolf by filling their heart-meter, you and your potential mate can proceed into the second phase of courtship, to further evaluate each other before making your final decision. We’ll talk about that a future blog post.
A couple notes:
We’re still polishing the wolf movement - it’s pretty good but not as smooth as we are aiming for in the final game.
Currently the potential mates do not do any contact emotes (chin rest, lick muzzle, sniff noses) - we hope to add that, but it’s a bit tricky.
Though you can meet many more potential mates than before, wolves are monogamous so you have to choose just one.
We do hope to add the possibility of your mate dying - so you then need to find a new mate - but most likely will add it in an update next year.

We are thrilled to have so many new subscribers! Thank you for spreading the word about WolfQuest 3! Now that we are getting over 1000 comments each week, we can’t answer everyone’s questions, so here are some FAQs. (And feel free to answer other people’s questions by copying and pasting these!)
___When will WolfQuest 3 and Tower Fall be released?
We are still aiming for later this year to begin releasing WQ3 but we still don’t have a release date. We will release the Mac/PC version first and then Kindle, iOS and Android versions. Once WQ3 is released, we will return to working on Tower Fall!
___How much will WQ3 cost?
WolfQuest 3 will be a free update to players who own WolfQuest 2.7. If you are buying WQ 3 for the first time in 2018, the cost will likely be more than than the current game 2.7 (so cheaper to purchase it now and get WQ 3 as a free update). The Tower Fall expansion will be an in-game purchase (DLC).
___Will WQ3 be available on mobile?
WolfQuest is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android & Kindle.
WolfQuest 3 will be available for mobile phones and tablets...at least some of them, and/or in some form. Bigger maps and more animals may be too much for mobile devices with limited RAM memory. We'll do our best, but there's a good chance that some mobile devices won't be able to get it, and/or we will have a simpler version of it for some mobile devices.

Damn, i used to play wolf quest in 2010 when i was a little girl, and i cant believe this is the same game! Its like comparing a sketch with a full blown oil painting! I really admire your perseverence with this game, working on it for over a decade and still improving it. I bought the game on steam and cant wait for the remaster and act three! Keep up the good work 🐺

This new system looks completely AMAZING. Everything just looks so fantastic. I love everything, the graphics, the scenery, all the new abilities. ITS JUST WOW. Yes, that's true. WolfQuest 3 Anniversary addition is a free upgrade from 2.7 but you have to buy Tower Fall. It's estimated to cost around $6-8.
Oh my gosh. I freaking LOVE this new mechanic... I love how the dispersal wolves travel in groups with their siblings, I love all the new animations, I love freaking EVERYTHING. I just simply cannot wait for this game to come out. I'm so excited. You all have done such an amazing job at creating this awesome game :)
I fell in love with this game many years ago and now I'm falling in love all over again! I found that the nose sniffing and the chin rest was the most adorable thing in the world. But most of all I enjoyed the fact that you can potentially run into more wolves in a pack (aggressive or not) instead of just one and being able to interact with them in more ways. Not to mention you have to be choosy about which wolf you want to try and convince! Amazing work, really, thank you and the entire team for putting so much effort and energy into these new updates!

Because Wolf quest 3 looks SO FREAKING FUN, like, you can make your fur look all long and unreal, you can shave it and make yourself look like a poodle or something, and you can do A whole lot more stuff than you can in the old version, which I don't like anymore, I used to, though, but I got pretty bored of it over time.

But holy cow, this looks incredible!! I knew we were going to have a major step up from the old turn-based system, but the fact that this is just one of multiple phases is absolutely amazing! I cannot wait to see this all in action for myself-- this is awesome!
Also it's pretty cool to hear that wolves really do disperse together! That was something I was trying to research into last year, since we had a pair of dispersal siblings in one of my playthroughs that traveled together at first (and ultimately stuck together, but that bit may not be quite so realistic, heh). I wonder, do you think the game will ever reach the point where we might have the chance to disperse with a sibling ourselves, and perhaps even watch them eventually find a mate of their own? It would be kind of interesting to take an NPC into the world with us and just watch how they react! But I certainly don't imagine that would be a near-future feature, if you guys ever add it at all :P

We are sticking to the storyline of the current game: you are a two year old dispersal wolf on your own who finds a mate and starts a family pack with pups. Maybe someday we will be able to add some to other pack options.

This is absolutely stunning! The WolfQuest team is probably the most hardworking company and they want to make a game as realistic as possible! I like to make my gameplay realistic, so that is why it’s my favorite game! It also made me more interested in wolves then ever before! You guys deserve way more attention and 1 million subs!

They way you guys are handling this has me just about dying. I just adore how they'll walk up to you and show their submission/they mean no harm. It not only adds way more on top of their personalities just showing it, but it makes them cuter. It's harder not to fall in love with them compared to a wolf who always stays in the same spot and can be reset from time to time when looking for a mate like the older versions of the game. (Both current, and even older back when I joined over half a decade ago when all you had to do was back up and move forward to get a new wolf. x'D) You really feel like you're looking for that "Special one", and I look forward to the next video showing courting in the next stage. ;3; Great job you guys, it's absolutely breathtaking. Don't even get me started on the new emote wheel, I thought getting any new emotes last time like rolling over was out there, I remember back when it was only bow, wag and howl! ;3; Ahhh, I can't wait to see what you improve upon next. ;3;

I've looked for a game like this for so much of my life, though no one has taken up the challenge. The WolfQuest team is doing something I've never seen before, and I'm completely fine with waiting for as long as it takes for this to be ready. Silhouette wolf I know everyone is excited, I get it, I'm excited too, but try to stay patient. Remember, we've waited several years between updates for this game in the past. The developers have waited a decade since the initial development of the game to work on this new version of WolfQuest, and likewise, we've all waited a decade to play a new modern WolfQuest game. So since fans have been able to wait so long for new updates in the past, I think the least we can do is be respectful enough to wait a little longer for the new version to be finished. :)
It probably won't come out very soon, game development is tough and the WolfQuest developers don't know what problems they will face while working on the new version, so try to remain patient and wait for official announcements. The developers are hoping to release the new version around the end of this year, but nothing can be confirmed yet. Just try to be patient, I know we're all excited (trust me, I am too) but as Lisa said, we've waited longer for updates in the past, so we can all definitely wait a few more months for the developers to finish working on this new version of WolfQuest.
I love just how much thought and effort is going into making this game. I used to play it fairly frequently when I was younger so it's definitely a nostalgic game for me. I've always loved playing realism since people (usually) get along better, actions are more justified and I like how you play as the role of a wild animal. There's not many games that actually have realism as a major part them though, or taken it to the high bar you guys have set. I really appreciate you keeping us posted on updates and allowing us to watch the progress and improvements individually instead of leaving us in the dark. The cost of the game, too, is actually really decent and I'd honestly pay a bit more.

Yeah, there's no other animal game that ever puts this much hard work and research into making their game realistic. WolfQuest is one of a kind, one of those incredibly rare games.
MothWolf Ya. Sadly most people are into games that really don’t have any benefit. Apparently playing violent games makes you more aggresive( A nuro scientist visited by school). One of my friends, my friends told me I had a sad life because I play games like Wolfquest. At least I learn something while playing some violent game that has no benefit in his life(I wanna be a conservationist or wildlife cameraman). I play these games since they make me more interested in what i want to become when I’m older.
Can you belive that people complained that the game costed money!! I mean really! Animation and realism like this doesn’t happen overnight people! This is the best realistic animal game on earth and probably the only one on earth. It is based of real facts. I can’t find any other game this good that has put in that much effort.

That looks amazing! I can tell that some of those dispersal wolves had bent ears, implying that wolves you find may have certain body customizations, which I think is an interesting touch. The fact that dispersal wolves will roam in groups is a pretty cool detail, and I can tell that the AI and animations are definitely improved. I also like the fact that the social arena doesn't have a fixed camera position anymore, which is very refreshing to see since the old social arena is quite restrictive in that aspect. With these new wolf models and animations, this looks like a much needed improvement of what we have in the current version of the game. I'm excited to see what else is in store for WolfQuest 3.

This is incredible! I was never a huge fan of the old system for getting mates. I'm sure this will make it so much more enjoyable now! Can't wait to see part 2
That is the most intriguing idea you’ve introduced to the new update yet!! That makes me so excited, it adds a whole new spin to the game as you feel like an actual wolf communicating with other wolves and picking your mate and having it take more time to socialize and court with them!
It might be impossible, but I would LOVE to see you guys take this as to forming a pack and have more than one wolf that just your mate defend and care for the pups like a true wolf pack, but still make it challenging as the other pack mates might not help with the hunt or defending the pups or carrying them, forcing players to do the work but also have that realism.

Ah, alright. One can dream though right? I enjoy the main storyline; I just thought it’s be cool to include more pack members besides just you and your mate. Or maybe have your first year pups help defend and care for second year pups. :D Anyways, I love all the work you guys have done towards the game, it’s pretty amazing.

The emotes are for both single and multiplayer. But some interactions, like the chin rest, will take two players cooperating.
I’m am as excited as anything! I thought Minecraft had major updates but this..this is unbelievable! You all have the time to create design and show what y’all do. WolfQuest’s team has put forth some strong effort to this game and I would wait a thousand years for them to finish. Some say the get angry waiting on this kind of creation and I just want to hit them upside the head and hope they realize what kind of effort it take to developer a game, use real information, and produce theses kind of thing to share with use. This is the kind of thing that deserves extra credit. Keep it up boys(and girls)

I could literally cryno I AM oh my god this is going to be such a wonderful game! I love how you can meet new MOVING wolves and you can determine their traits and I just am so happy for my favorite game because EVERYONE is going to want to play this. This game is a literal GAME changer in our technological world. Please continue to work on this and add as much stuff as you can I am willing to wait for so long with updates likes these! You guys have such terrific team work and you're producing a wonderful game I can not thank you enough!
I can already tell that this full update wouldn’t be available for mobile, it’s just too awesome. Oh well.
Will WQ3 be available on mobile?
WolfQuest is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android & Kindle. So yes, WolfQuest 3 will be available for mobile phones and tablets...at least some of them, and/or in some form. Bigger maps and more animals may be too much for mobile devices with limited RAM memory. We'll do our best, but there's a good chance that some mobile devices won't be able to get it, and/or we will have a simpler version of it for some mobile devices.

Beautiful graphics and amazing updated gameplay! The WQ team is clearly working so diligently and hard to give us immersive, beautiful, and realistic gameplay. I am beyond excited to play WQ 3 and then Tower Fall. Keep up the great work!

Dang, I really, really love what you and your team put so much into this game. Hopefully it will be the full on star every time it improves. I have been in the Wolfquest community for about 3 years now, started when I was 11 and am now 14. Seeing the developments in the new games and updates astonishes me, this shows what a simple 10 dollars can do! I am so proud to have been in this community as long as I have been, and am amazed at all the wonderful developers and helpers. Can't wait for the new update! 💟
