The macondo well leak was a blowout prevention valve failed. That type of bop valve cannot be tested periodically to verify proper operation. One issue that is very important specifically dealing using on ocean based drill platforms is that there is no way of isolating pressure if the Bop valve needs repair or replacement. That type of bop valve either needs the type of valve that is alot safer in use and won't cost in lives or environmental damage. Once activated that type of valve leaves the well sealed and no way of accessing. I have over 30 years of experience in pipeline repair and maintenance. I'm also currently employed on Alaska's North slope oilfields as a mechanic in the Prudhoe Bay area. In 2010 June I watched the news coverage of the horizon crew stumbling around not knowing what to do next. I also found out there was a "horizon helpline". At that time the horizon crew used the rov's to cut bent sections of the well lime away and left several feet sticking out not the seabed, inches away from the end of the pipe had a flange and thought the flange could be used to lock a caphead onto. I finished my caphead design and called the "horizon helpline" and submitted my design. Unfortunately I neglected to file for a patent pending and was later emailed back by horizon helpline personnel and informed my design was unusable. Several weeks later I watched as they used my design to stop the macondo well leak. I still have copies of my design as well as emails to verify. On land based oil production fields are required to periodically test safety valves and keep records of the tests. This is overseen by the dept of transportation. Spill contingency are drills and if spills occur are dealt with immediately. The macondo well/ horizon spill took 87 days to bring under control and no idea of what to do until I submitted my caphead design. For my contribution I was given a brush off/ slapped In the face and was neither given credit for or compensated. Since that time I've seen very little change In the types of blowout prevention valves that can be tested to verify it will work when needed. If the bop valve isn't operational needs repair or replacement as I've stated there is no way of accomplishing without creating another leak. My future plan is to start my own company that primarily deals in deepwater repair since none exist. I also have the needed valves that can be repaired and maintained as alot more than crude oil and gases come up out of the well. My company will design and market needed designs and will include upgrades for existing bop valves. The difference is that the deep horizon incident costed 100 billion and rising and changing better mousetrap alot less. In the future I will get paid either for better equipment or repairs. "007".
