Keith McGinnis with KCDC Designs created this vanity top using epoxy resin dyes (Alumilite) along with some mica powder colorants, with the best ones being from Resin Arte and can be purchased at: www.rk3designs.com and www.Artiststilldeath.com. A combination of dyes and mica powders can create some awesome colors, which are then mixed with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. In this video Keith explains and shows how he created this design.
Now see, you’ve sealed it! I have got to try this now! (How have I missed this video so long??) Anyway, for some reason I have seen this technique come up so often, and then yours did….its a sign. I gotta try it! 😂 I’ll probably be awful at it, but never know until you try!

It really is a fun technique, with so many different possibilities! I especially like how you can wipe it off and start over if you like :) .
I actually like the first rendition that you wiped off. I thought it was bold and very pretty but ... wow... the 2nd rendition is fabulous. But... I thought that what you had @14:56 was very lovely. I don't know why you wanted to 'correct' it. From this end it looked wonderful but maybe that wasn't the case from your where you were standing. No matter what, though, it turned out very beautiful.

Hard telling what I was thinking at the time, but "in the moment" there was something about it that either didn't tie in with the rest, or I just didn't like it. Which is one of the great things about this technique, that it's not permanent until sealed. I've even come back the next day, when using this technique and did the same thing, or maybe just added something.

I've never seen anything like this. This is truly amazing. Epoxy resin can be a struggle. This color-dye technique is much more forgiving.

@@marysorrells Hi Mary, I use Movavi Video Editor and save the files on an external hard drive. It certainly has a learning curve but very user friendly.

This is the technique I've been looking for! The sample boards are amazing. I've been on an epoxy countertop marathon, but I haven't quite found the technique to capture the look I want till now! I've used alcohol and ink on smaller tiles to make coasters, but I didn't think I could do that for epoxy counters. Thanks for posting!

I see that the Double 0-7 comes as a power, do you just mix that with alcohol?

Did you ultimately finish with another coat of resin after you sprayed the matte finish?
Hi there, and yes I did. The clear coat is what really amplifies the colors and brings it to life (as well as providing a protective layer).

Stunning countertop Keith! Also, I love the way you video and explain, it's enjoyable to watch. One question: do you feel any concerns about possible delamination? I love this process, but i haven't found a way to do it and ensure that there's a good bond between layers.
Hi Kathy and thanks for the kind words!
To prevent delamination with each layer of epoxy, I take extra care to be sure I roll the epoxy under the bottom edge of the countertop with my hand. By doing this, it maintains a strong bond and remains sealed to the substrate (typically MDF). I also make sure I continue to scrape the drips on the underside until it's no longer dripping. This way I don't have to grind those drips and take a chance of breaking that seal. As far as using this technique and not sanding the alcohol ink design prior to the final flood coat, it's been determined that after sealing the alcohol inks with a UV protective spray, such as Krylon's UV Archival spray, that spray paint is creating a chemical bond to the next layer of epoxy.

I liked this one until you took the camera off of the tripod and did a closer "fly by" by hand. That closer look 👀 was a show-stopper! It was AMAZING! Love the gold veins, and the iridescent colors. Thank you for sharing.

That's a great question! I think it would be great for practicing, and having something white under it would help see your design and colors. As far as sealing it with the clear matte spray paint, then a clear coat of epoxy, I can only assume it would completely adhere, since I haven't tried it.

Ive got a idea" first layer alcohol ink as a base. Then resin on top. Second layer again alcohol ink( or pigments/ pasta's etc. Let your imagination go ) then the last layer. Sand it down and again the toplayer. I think you work more like a really 3d way. 😊

In a 1 oz applicator bottle, usually no more than 2-4 drops of Alumilite Dye, to 91% isopropyl alcohol.

The problem with inks is that they will fade, which is why dyes are used for countertops.

how did you make the warm grey color? I don't see that with Alumilite.
Hi Suzanne, it was made with 2 drops of Black Alumilite dye, 1 drop of Brown Alumilite dye.
So is this look possible with a black or darker background with the same colors?
Hey Robert, that's a great question. This was my first countertop with that technique & design so I'm not able to answer as I haven't tried it. Experiment with it then please share your results, and thanks for the question!

I visited with Rhonda at RK3 Designs who said you wouldn't be able to see your design with a black or darker background.
How do you keep that wite from not turning yellow over time?
I use Stone Coat's Art Coat epoxy which have a high amount of UV inhibitors. I have white countertops that I've installed over 3 years ago that haven't yellowed. Epoxy will naturally amber over time but yellowing prematurely can be caused by several factors, including the colorants used, the type of undercoat paint used, not letting it off-gas and other factors as well.

What’s your recipe for your brown color?
It was just using a drop or two of Alumilite Brown Opaque Dye, mixed with 91% isopropyl alcohol.
@@kcdcdesigns Thank You. I was trying to figure out if it was a Clara recipe from her book or a custom color you had made.
@@sideffects95 I did this before I received her mixing guide. Now I'll be able to name the colors and recipe for others, with the exception of custom colors when necessary.

So can someone explain the different from Alcohol dyes and Alcohol inks?
Hi Jane, the main difference is that alcohol inks can, and usually do fade very quickly. Alcohol dyes on the other hand will not fade.
@@kcdcdesigns so then is the alcohol dyes made up of a stronger pigment concentrate or something? Cause essentially they both have alcohol in the formula
@@janeijhajones1115 My apologies for not explaining further. Alcohol dyes are made using Alumilite Dyes mixed with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and the dyes are used specifically to tint epoxy resin. You're correct they both contain alcohol, which soon evaporates after landing on the surface. The "inks" are what fade, whereas the dyes will not. Alcohol inks are purchased pre-mixed whereas the alcohol dyes are mixed by the user to obtain the desired colors.
Clara Lawrence with Clara Lawrence Art has developed a mixing guide which shows the ratio of dyes to alcohol to obtain the colors in her guide. This guide can be found at www.claralawrenceart.com . The guide is in pdf format and is only $15.99 and very comprehensive.
